Opis:
The paper presents the research on how the effectiveness of removing organic substances is affected by the use of polyurethane foam fillings characterized by a varied porosity and the temperature of the process of treating landfill leachate in a biological sequencing batch reactor. The information on the conversion of organic compounds during the operation of the reactor was obtained by measuring the absorbance for selected wavelengths to describe the process of humification. It was found that the technological conditions used in the experiment affected the effectiveness of reducing the COD, but did not affect the type or amount of the humic substances in the leachate treated. In all of the variants examined, the COD decreased the as the humification level increased, and yet this relation was not linear in character.

Opis:
The conducted research included the estimation of the quality of groundwater from the Main Reservoir of Ground Water No. 333 area in Opole District, Poland. The groundwater in the analyzed region shows high diversity in quality. The main threat for the quality of water in this region is the human household activity. The main pollutants of groundwater are: dissolved phosphorus, nitrate and ammonium. The quality and quantity of dissolved humic substances in groundwater were also investigated. The results showed that the contents of water-extractable organic carbon varied. Presently, the analyzed groundwater is characterized by large differences in dissolved forms of organic carbon. During migration of the soil solution through the soil profile to groundwater, dissolved humic substances undergo qualitative and quantitative changes. Correlation analysis between the quantity of carbon in soil and aquatic humic substances, especially fulvic acids, indicates the possibility of their translocation in soil profiles and their transformation and migration to groundwater. This conclusion can be confirmed by FT-IR-analysis.

The laboratory tests presented in the article aimed at determining the influence of water hardness on the effectiveness of humic substances removal in the coagulation process. The tests were conducted on three model solutions; very soft water, soft water and semi-hard water. The concentration of humic substances in each solution was equal to 20 mg/dm3. Calcium hydroxide, ferric(III)chloride and aluminium sulphate(VI) were applied as coagulants. On the basis of the conducted tests, it was found that the increased content of calcium, and particularly of magnesium in water, improves the effectiveness of humic substances removal. The process effectiveness expressed by changes in colour and permanganate index was the highest for semi-hard water. A decrease in colour equal to 88.8% and in permanganate index – 72.1% was observed in this case for the largest dose of calcium. Even better results were obtained by applying the remaining coagulants; a decrease in colour amounted to 99%, and in permanganate index to 95%.

A field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of SEKEM Company in Bilbes, Sharqia Governorate, Egypt during the 2019 season, in order to study the effect of adding compost tea and humic acid on the growth and active ingredient of the chive (Allium schoenoprasum L.) plant. Chive seeds were sown in nursery in August, two months later seedlings were transplanted to permanent soil. The chive plants received two organic fertilizers: the first one was compost tea (0, 100 and 200 ml/L) as main plot, and the second one was humic acid (0, 2 and 4 g/L) as sub plot. The two fertilizers were sprayed twice, 45 and 75 days after sowing. The results revealed that: the applied compost tea significantly increased the growth and yield characteristics as well as oil percentage and yield, compared with untreated plants. The plants treated with compost tea at 200 ml / L produced the maximum mean values of plant height, fresh and dry weights of herb, as well as essential oil yield. However, humic acid at 4 g /L recorded the highest mean values of plant height, fresh and dry weights of herb. On the other hand, humic acid at 2 g/L gave the highest values of essential oil yield. Moreover, the interaction treatments had a significant effect on all traits under study. Thirty compounds of Chive essential oil (EO) were identified by GC-MS analysis, representing from 65.07 to 93.29% of the total EO. The main compounds found were dipropyl disulfide (12.8–35.4%), dipropyl trisulfide (12.9–30.05%), methyl propyl trisulfide (3.80–9.03%) and 1-propenyl propyl disulfide (1.56–10%). The highest amounts of dipropyl disulfide and 1-propenyl propyl disulfide were detected with humic acid at 4 g/L treatment. The treatment of compost tea at 200 ml/L + humic acid at 2 g/L caused the greatest accumulation of dipropyl trisulfide which recorded 30.05%, while the greatest values of methyl propyl trisulfide (9.03%) were recorded as a result of tea compost at 100 ml/L.

The young coal mining pits (young pits) found in West Aceh cause many problems. These pits that form ponds have the potential to be utilized for aquaculture activities. However, the main problem faced in the young pits is the high content of heavy metals. This makes the ponds dangerous for fish farming. Hazardous heavy metals in coal mines are Pb and Fe. Humic acid is one of the materials that can be used to minimize heavy metals and increase water pH. The use of humic acid is more efficient because this technology is easy and cheap and the raw materials are abundant. Humic acid acts as a substance of cation exchange ability found in compost. This research has a long-term goal of making humic acid contained in compost as an alternative material that can minimize heavy metals Pb and Fe, so that it can be used for fish farming activities. The specific objective is to determine the best capacity (dose of humic acid) in minimizing heavy metals and increasing the pH of young pond water in former mines and its effect on fish farming. This research method used a completely randomized design consisting of one factor, namely the dose of humic acid (0 g/L, 2.5 g/L, 5 g/L, 7.5 g/L) and three replications. The results showed that humic acid was able to minimize the content of heavy metals Pb and Fe in coal mine water with the best dose of 5 g/L. The percentage reduction produced was more than 90%. The results of fish rearing using ex-mining pond water treated with humic acid showed that the survival rate and growth rate of fish were higher.

Humic and fulvic acids are important materials for the health of the soil. This is related to the capability of humic and fulvic acids as chelating agent for pollutant in soil. The relationship between humic and fulvic acids with that of the soil properties is an important aspect to determine the characteristics of soil. Furthermore, production of humic and fulvic acids is a time-consuming process with several stages. Regarding this problem, the selection of sample size to study humic and fulvic acids is important. The relationship between the soil properties was analysed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis, which is regarded as a solution to solve the analysis of complicated problems by offering a powerful approach. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between humic and fulvic acids, in terms of their mineral and physicochemical properties using the PLS method. The study was carried out in West Java, Indonesia. The results showed that the relationship between the chemical, physical, mineral contents with humic and fulvic acids, affected the negative and positive aspects of the relationship. Humic acids had a weak to good model category (0.269–0.940) with regards to the soil properties, and fulvic acids had a moderate model category (0.495–0.603) against all soil properties. Thus, the PLS method can solve a problem in study relationship between the soil properties with small sample and can help in understanding the soil characteristics in general.

In this study, the effectiveness of the electrocoagulation (EC) process was evaluated based on the reduction of organic and nitrogenous contaminants in landfill leachate. A three-compartment electrochemical reactor as pre-treatment of stabilized landfill leachate was carried out ahead of biological treatment. The removal efficiencies of COD, BOD, ammonia, and nitrate were analyzed at pH 4, 6, and 8 with the current densities of $20.83$ and $29.17 mA•cm^{–2}$. At pH 4, the highest removal of COD and $NH_4^+$ was obtained, i.e., in the range of 72–81% and 43–59%, respectively. The ratio of $BOD_5$/$COD$ was increased after EC, from initially 0.11 to 0.32 at pH 4. In addition, EC effectively removed humic substances in the leachate by targeting a large amount of high molecular weight humic substances, with around $10^3$ kDa. However, the higher removal efficiency observed at higher current density leads to higher specific energy consumption. At a current density of $29.17 mA•cm^{–2}$, the specific energy consumption obtained in EC was around $10–17 Wh•g^{–1}$ COD and $99–148 Wh•g^{–1}$ $NH_4^+$. This could be decreased up to 50% at an applied current density of $20.83 mA•cm^{–2}$ with slightly lower efficiencies.

Opis:
It is well-known that the properties of humus soil substances (including humic acids) are soil-type-specific. However, one shall consider the fact that properties of organic matter of soil can be modified by farming system (crop rotation, fertilisation) as well as other external factors, including pollutants; PAHs. The objective of the paper is to determine the effect of a single-time pollution of soils with high rates of PAHs on the properties of humic acids. The research was performed with the samples of soils representative for the Kujawy and Pomorze Region (Phaeozems, Luvisol, Haplic Arenosols, Fluvisols). Soil samples were polluted with selected PAHs; fluorene, anthracene, pyrene and chrysene at the amount corresponding to 100 mg PAHs kg-1. Treatments, i.e., soils + PAHs, were incubated for 180 and 360 days at the temperature of 20–25 ºC and at constant moisture of 50% of field water capacity. Humic acids were extracted from the soil samples prior to and after 180 and 360 days of incubation. The following analyses were performed for separating humic acids: elemental composition, UV-VIS and IR spectrophotometric analyses, susceptibility to oxidation. Results demonstrated that a single introduction of fluorene, anthracene, pyrene and chrysene at very high rates into soils affects the properties of humic acids. There was mostly recorded a de-crease in coefficients of absorbance A2/6 and A4/6, an increase in the parameter defining the susceptibility of humic acids to oxidation. There were also noted changes in the pattern of spectra in infrared and the values of the parameter defining the degree of internal oxidation of the humic acids molecules.

Opis:
Badane gleby reprezentowały 15 profili zaliczanych do bielic, gleb brunatnych właściwych i kwaśnych. Uzyskane wyniki analiz chemicznych i wartości indeksów A2/4, A2/6, A4/6, ΔlogK oraz współczynników korelacji wskazują, iż w badanych glebach procesy transformacji materii organicznej prowadzą do wytworzenia substancji humusowych o niskim stopniu humifikacji i ilościowym zróżnicowaniu w profilach.
The aim of this work was to determine the diversity of qualitative humic substances in the ectohumus horizon of the forest soil profiles. The analyzed soils were located in protected landscape areas and nature parks – Bory Niemodlińskie and Lasy Stobrawsko-Turawskie, and occurred under the tree stands of trees which were 200 – 600 years old – Quercus robur. The analyzed soils represent 15 soil profiles belonging to Podzols, Cambisols and Dystric Cambisols. Properties of forest habitat specificity influenced the physicochemical and chemical properties of the analyzed soils. We observed particularly strong expressions of acidity, pH and salinity, and a diversity of chemical and optical properties of humic substances. The content of organic matter in the analyzed soil horizons showed considerable variation, as indicated by a coefficient of variation (V) equal to 61%. The composition of humic substances of forest litter is characterized by a gradual change of functional groups that usually consists in the decrease of carbohydrates, the relative increase of carboxyl and alkyl carbon, and decay of lignin. In the investigated soils, we observed that the transformation processes of organic matter led to humic substances which were predominantly humus with a lower level of humification, as evidenced by the indexes: A2/4, A2/6, A4/6, ΔlogK. Therefore, variation of the observed properties of humic substances indicates a different direction in the transformation process of organic matter. Such a transformation depends very much on the habitat and nature of supplied organic matter.

Adding humic acid to soil can improve soil structure and fertility, which can lead to better plant growth and higher crop yields. Extracting humic acid from compost is a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to obtain a valuable organic material. Humic acid (HA) can be extracted from compost relatively easily and at a low cost, making it an attractive option for farmers. In this study, we investigated the use of sugarcane bagasse (SB) and immature horse manure (IHM) as bulking agents for the composting of separated municipal solid waste (SMSW) and the extraction and characterization of humic acid from the mature composts produced. Fertilizing solutions containing different concentrations of humic acid were prepared and used to evaluate their effects on turnip crop growth and various biochemical parameters during cultivation. The results showed that the humic acid extracted from the composts had high yields and were rich in elemental carbon. The application of humic acid at both low and high concentrations resulted in a significant improvement in all the parameters measured except for the total protein in the roots, which did not differ significantly between the humic acid concentrations. The yield, root diameter and fresh weight increased significantly, and the leaf area was proportional to the humic acid concentration of the solution used. The highest increase in chlorophyll a content was observed in the treatment of humic acid extracted from composts C2 and C3 at a concentration of 0.1 gL-1, with an increase of 31% and 37%, respectively, compared to the control. The use of humic acid provided by co-compost can be considered a successful management strategy for degraded sandy soils and sustainable agriculture production in sandy poor soils worldwide.

Opis:
It is necessary to find innovative ways to improve the environmental performance of production processes and products. The technology of extracting valuable components from raw materials of plant origin is often used in technological processes of the food, pharmaceutical, chemical and other industries. Extraction is the most energy intensive step. The factors contributing to the extraction of humic acids from plant substrates under the action of electric discharge were studied. The purpose of the work was to study the efficiency of humic acids extraction from the biosubstrate under the action of electric discharges. The physical experiment showed that the main factor influencing the intensity of extraction is the degree of grinding of the solid phase of the biosubstrate-water suspension. The efficiency of electric discharge grinding depends on the pressure amplitude at the distance of the inner radius of the chamber and the number of discharge pulses. It was established that the number of chemical reagents (alkalis), usually used in the process of extracting humic acids from peat, can be reduced many times due to the appearance of radicals and peroxide compounds in the peat-water suspension resulting from the action of an electric discharge. The prospects of the non-thermal electric discharge method of intensification of the extraction of humic acids from biosubstrates were determined.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych dotyczących możliwości wykorzystania węgli aktywnych produkcji polskiej (WD-ekstra, WG-12, WG-15, AG-5 i DTO) do usuwania substancji humusowych z wody. Największe wartości pojemności sorpcyjnych wyznaczone zarówno w warunkach nieprzepływowych jak i przepływowych posiadały węgle WD – ekstra (7,71 mg/g) i DTO (7,40 mg/g). Krzywe wyjścia (izoplany) wykorzystano również do określenia strefy przenikania masy (wysokości frontu adsorpcji) oraz do obliczenia prędkości przesuwania się strefy wymiany masy.
The paper presents the results of laboratory tests on possibility of utilizing active carbons produced in Poland (WD-ekstra, WG-12, WG-15, AG-5 and DTO) for removing humic substances from water. The objective of the tests was to arrive at a quantitative formulation of the adsorption process, as well as determine the effect of various factors on process course. An attempt was made to solve the tasks set in the study purpose using model experimental setups. A model solution with humic substances in the concentration of 20 mg/dm3 was employed. The processes of adsorption conducted in a batch mode were best described by Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption capacity of the tested active carbons was calculated on the basis of the isotherms. The flow conditions were created with columnar filtration method. On the basis of the obtained results, the breakthrough curves, so-called iso-planes, were prepared and served to determine the adsorption capacities in flow conditions. The WD-extra (7.71 mg/g) and DTO (7.40 mg/g) carbons exhibited the highest values of adsorption capacities, as determined in both non-flow and flow conditions. The exit curves (iso-planes) were also utilized to determine the mass penetration zone (the adsorption front height), as well as to calculate the rate of mass-exchange zone advance.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of sewage sludge composting in mixture with lignocellulosic waste on the transformations of organic matter, therein humic substances, nitrogen compounds, heavy metals and their chemical forms. Composting in two-stage system (1o aerated bioreactor, 2o periodically aerated windrow) led to loss of organic matter from 615.9 g/kg d.w. to 486.6 g/kg d.w. and increase of humic substances content, mainly humic acids from 93.3 mg C/g OM to 182.3 mg C/g OM. In mature compost, mineral nitrogen occurred mainly as nitrate and the NNH4/NNO3 ratio was 0.07. Total Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb and Cd concentration was below permissible values. Composting resulted in redistribution of metal forms and in final product the highest lowering of metal mobility (as Mf), compared to the feedstock, was achieved for Zn and Cu. For all metals the increase of metal binding intensity (IR) was observed: 0.48 to 0.59 (Cu), 0.19 to 0.21 (Zn), 0.79 to 0.87 (Ni), 0.47 to 0.56 (Pb).
