Opis:
The use of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes will be an essential component for sustainable water resources management, especially in the water-stressed countries as in Jordan. In this context, an attempt has been made to determine the suitability of effluent quality of selected wastewater treatment plants in Jordan for the irrigation purposes based on weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) approach, according to the Jordanian standards for reclaimed domestic wastewater. The effluent wastewater quality records from 22 wastewater treatment plants within a one-year-monitoring period from March 2015 to February 2016 were used. Fifteen physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters were selected to calculate WQI. According to the WQI scale classification, most of the selected wastewater treatment plants were not in full compliance with the Jordanian standards for the reclaimed domestic wastewater regarding the direct reuse of treated wastewater for the irrigation purposes. Therefore, for category A (i.e., vegetables that are normally eaten cooked, parking areas, sides of roads inside cities, and playgrounds), one plant is classified in the 'Excellent water' class and six plants as a "Good water" class. For category B (i.e., irrigation of fruit trees, green areas, and sides of roads outside the cities), one plant is classified in the 'Excellent water' class and twelve plants as a "Good water" class. For category C (i.e., irrigation of industrial crops, field crops, and forest trees), one plant is classified in the 'Excellent water' class and fifteen plants as a "Good water" class. The effective weight calculations identified that E. coli is considered the most effective parameter in the WQI values in category A, and to a lesser extent, SAR, pH, BOD, and NO3. For category B, the SAR, pH and E. coli parameters are considered the most effective parameters in the WQI values. In turn, for category C, the SAR, pH, and PO4–3 parameters are considered the most effective parameters in the WQI values. Thus, these parameters based on category are considered as the main parameters which degrade the effluent wastewater quality for irrigation purposes. The results of this study are beneficial for the water managers and policymakers for proper actions on water resources and agricultural management in Jordan.

The paper deals with water conditioning issues in oil-field development using water-flooding. It is common knowledge that injected water contains oil residues and mechanical impurities, which affect permeability of geological horizon. It has been shown that these water impurities could intensify rock colmatation up to a full clogging of pores and fractures. Hence, issues of improving quality of injected water, aimed to ensure enhancement of reservoir properties, have been studied from a variety of new angles. There are given results of conducted test experiments as well as detailed description of elaborated equipment design. It has been established that two-stage treatment technology proposed in the paper, by making use of magnetic treatment device and sewage tank with liquid hydrophobic layer, will allow to considerably improve quality of injected water. Suggested water treatment unit appears to be highly applicable, providing a maximum effect at a minimum material cost.

In this paper, the researchers presented the process control analysis of a Poultry Wastewater (PWW) treatment plant that was designed to comply with the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations, 2009. In this pilot case study, the researchers highlighted the fact that owing to the existing global environmental challenges, a Six Sigma approach needs to be used for developing a new technique that helps in optimising process capability and assesses the treatment reliability. This would allow the effective treatment of different pollutants like pH, BOD5, TSS, COD, O&G and NH3-N before their discharge into the environment. The researchers used several quality control process tools like the I-MR control charts, treatment process capability analysis and treatment reliability assessment in the study. After analysing the data, the researchers concluded that the plant could effectively treat NH3-N, as well as fairly decrease the pH, BOD5, and COD values, whereas it displayed low ability in treating TSS and O&G within the research period. The researchers noted that the process showed low reliability in the treatment of TSS and O&G, i.e., 88.6% and 29.8% respectively, led to the discharge of fine colloids in the effluent. This was attributed to problematic processes in the PWW treatment procedure, such as malfunction of the DAF unit process, ineffective physical-chemical treatment, and tertiary filtration breakdown. The researchers concluded that this PWW plant required additional control and design improvement so that it released a low concentration of toxic compounds in the effluent discharge, and complied with the standards. This research could be used as a reference for additional studies that aimed to improve the quality of the wastewater treatment processes.

At the current stage of discharge and treatment of municipal sewage and other types of wastewater in the territory of Ukraine, traditional technologies of biological treatment in aero-tanks by the process of aerobic oxidation involving active silt characterized by low efficiency are largely used. It was established that biological treatment and additional treatment of sewage involving hydrophytes are efficient. The research on wastewater quality and the efficiency of sewage treatment was conducted in three phases: Phase 1 – “the quality before treatment”, Phase 2 – “the quality after mechanical-biological treatment” at the existing municipal treatment plants, Phase 3 – “the quality after additional treatment by hydrophytes”. In order to determine the efficiency of using hydrophytes additional treatment, Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and the perennial aquatic plant Lemna minor were planted in one treatment pond. The results of the experiment made it possible to determine high efficiency of using hydrophytes for additional sewage treatment. In particular, the efficiency of additional treatment in the treatment ponds removing the residue of suspended pollutants for 40 days was 32%, toxic salts – 13.0–23.0%, oil products – 30.0%, biogenic substances – 68.5–83.3%. It caused a drop in the values of chemical and biological oxygen demand for 5 days by 89.6% and 61.2%, respectively. The efficiency of sewage treatment removing toxic salts and oil products reached 97.7%, whereas in the case of mineral and organic pollutants – up to 99%. That contributed to a considerable increase in the wastewater quality by the criteria for fisheries. In particular, high nutritional value of Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna minor allowed obtaining 12.5 tons of hydrophyte wet mass that can be used as green manure, feeds for farm animals, poultry and fish.

Opis:
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been recognized as a source of odors and microbial pathogens to the outdoor air. The results of many studies revealed that high amounts of microorganisms are not only present in the stream of wastewater or sludges but also in the bioaerosols that are generated during the different stages of the wastewater treatment. Hence, possible migration of biological contaminants into the interiors cannot be excluded. However, there is a knowledge gap in an assessment of the microbiological indoor air quality of the facilities located at WWTPs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of outdoor microbial air contamination upon the indoor environment based on the determined outdoor to indoor (O/I) ratios. The sampling of airborne bacteria and fungi was conducted in three replications with the sedimentation and impaction method, during a one-year survey in ten technological and office buildings as well as their vicinity, at the municipal wastewater treatment plant of Lublin (Poland). Moreover, the cleanliness of hand contact surfaces in staff rooms was examined (Rodac plates). Additionally, API identification of bacteria and fungi was carried out. The highest concentration of total bacteria count (3617 CFU/$m^3$) and fungi in bioaerosols (5386 CFU/$m^3$) was detected in the air around the sewage pumping station, close to the aeration tanks. P. fluorescens was found in the air around the grit chamber (78 CFU/$m^3$). The majority of the examined indoor air samples were characterized with different levels of microbiological contamination – from non-polluted to moderately polluted. The number of total bacteria counts ranged from 180 to 4679 CFU/$m^3$. The highest estimated indoor fungi concentration was 4022 CFU/$m^3$. The controlled surfaces were mostly contaminated with the Actinomycetes and Coliform bacteria. No Salmonella sp. were detected. The bacteria from the Enetrobacteriaceae family were commonly isolated from the indoor and outdoor air samples. The obtained data can be used to devise further guidelines facilitating control and management of WWTP to avoid or minimize the staff exposure.

The wastewater quality index (WWQI) can be defined as a single value, which reflects the overall wastewater quality related to its input constituent parameters. The major objective of the present study was to investigate the suitability of the effluent quality from Meet Abo El-koum wastewater treatment plant in Egypt for safe disposal based on the wastewater quality index approach. Moreover, statistical analysis was applied to develop a simple model using multiple linear regression (MLR) for accurate prediction of WWQI depending on different wastewater quality parameters. The results indicate good quality of the treated wastewater for safe disposal in general. Moreover, it is apparent that about 17% of the WWQI values reached excellent quality referring to the classification of the WWQI levels. For greater simplicity, a relationship between BOD5 and COD was deduced using linear regression, so that the results of the BOD5 analyses that appear after five days can be skipped. This approximation can be used to calculate WWQI on a specific day given the results of the treated wastewater analyses on that day.

Water is very plentiful through the planet in general. Nevertheless, clean drinking water is not always accessible in the proper time or place for sufficient public or ecological use. The water significance is emphasized by the fact that in the past, great cultures have arisen near and along water bodies. Water quality of some purification complexes (compact units) in the Babylon Province (13 compact unit) as compared with Al-Hillah Al Mouahad Project (water treatment plant) was assessed by the Water Quality Index (WQI) methodology. WQI offers a particular number that states the overall water quality at a definite place and period based on many parameters concerning the quality of water. The water produced from the compact units was classified as "good water" according to the WQI classification with the values ranging from 85.4 in Bermana unit to 99.17 in Al-Muamera compact unit. Moreover, the research results showed that the water purification complexes work with efficiency, very close to the performance of large water purification projects and stations, and this means that it is possible to rely on them to obtain good drinking water quality, especially in small or remote areas.

Opis:
The paper aimed at determining the effect of treated sewage discharged from a sewage treatment plant, modernized in 2007–2008, on the quality of the receiving water – the Breń river. The mechanical-biological sewage treatment plant is situated in the northern part of Dąbrowa Tarnowska town (Malopolskie voivodship). The treated sewage is disposed of by means of a collecting pipe to the Breń river, which abiotically is a lowland sandy stream, type 17. The hydrochemical analyses were conducted monthly, from May 2014 to April 2015 in three measurement points. The first and the third were situated on the Breń river, 30 m above and 400 m below the treated sewage outlet respectively, whereas the second one was on the outflow collecting pipe from the sewage treatment plant. In the analysed water, 17 physicochemical water quality indices were determined by means of reference methods. On the basis of the data analysis it was found that pollutant concentrations in the treated sewage discharged into the Bren river did not exceed the values stated in the water permit and only sporadically did not meet the requirements stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment regarding ammonium nitrogen concentrations in the winter-spring period. Slight dynamics of seasonal changes of physicochemical indices values in the treated sewage evidences a high proficiency of the sewage treatment plant operation, irrespective of the air or water temperature. The treated sewage affected the increase in 12 from among 17 analysed physicochemical indices in the Breń river, of which the dependencies were statistically significant in 8 cases. BOD5 and ammonium nitrate caused a change of water quality class from I to II, and in case of phosphates a decline of ecological state from very good to below good. Despite a negative effect of the sewage treatment plant, the water quality state in the Breń river would be much worse if untreated municipal waste flowed into the receiving water.

This paper presents the analysis and evaluation of the impact of clean sewage on the water in the Mordarka river, in the period 2012–2015. The analysis was conducted based on the collected and statistical research: the amount and composition of the purified sewage discharged to the receiver. The following pollution indices were tested: total suspended solids, BOD5, COD, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. On the basis of the obtained results it was concluded that the amount of purified wastewater discharge to the Mordarka river, did not contribute to the degradation of the water quality in that period of time. Moreover, the level of indicators: total suspended solid, BOD5 and COD did not exceed the limit values from the regulation, which confirmed the effective protection of water quality in the Mordarka river. However, because of the high concentration of biogenic compounds in the purified wastewater effluents, the river is prone to eutrophication process.

Monthly reports from June 2017 to May 2018 of Twenty-one wastewater treatment plants in Sharkia were evaluated for the following parameters: temperature, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate (NO3), oil and grease (O&G) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) values. The first aim of this study was to estimate the main wastewater per capita pollution generation per day (PCPL) and found that the 90th percentile PCPL for TSS, COD, BOD, NO3 and O&G were equal to 57.42, 91.59, 59.13, 1.64 and 12.39 (g/capita/day) respectively. The second aim was to assess the performance of the WWTPs in the governorate, by calculating of the wastewater quality index (WWQI) of each plant and for the entire governorate which shows that; 2 WWTPs gives a good performance, 9 WWTPs gives a fair performance, 9 WWTPs gives a marginal performance and 1 WWTP is in bad conditions, the average performance all over the governorate is considered marginal. A simple empirical formula had been established to be used for calculation of the WWQI based on the tested parameters using the multiple linear regression and found to be very effective in predicting the WWQI for the WWTPs.

The work presented the assessment of household wastewater treatment plants with drainage systems on the quality of groundwater in dug wells and deep water wells in the area of 3 selected communes (Drelów, Dębowa Kłoda and Urszulin), located in the Lublin province in south-eastern Poland. The investigations of the physicochemical composition of water from selected 28 dug wells and 2 deep water wells were conducted from June to July 2020, involving 9 measurement series. The microbiological studies consisted in 4 measurement series. The composition of the wastewater from primary settling tanks discharged to soil via drainage systems located in the vicinity of considered wells was also examined on a single occasion. The studies indicate that the water from wells are significantly polluted with ammonia, nitrites, as well as compounds of natural origin: iron and manganese. The presence of microbiological pollution of fecal origin was noted. The studies clearly indicate the possible pollution of the analyzed well waters with domestic sewage discharged to soil via drainage systems. Therefore, it necessary to take the actions aimed at improving the quality of groundwater in the Lublin province, including limitation of drainage systems, especially in the areas with unfavorable subsurface and hydrological conditions as well as low water supply coverage. The need to introduce changes in legal regulations and strategies for the development of technical infrastructure in counties, favoring the most efficient, as well as simple and inexpensive technologies, was indicated.

Biofilters, commonly called rain gardens, are becoming increasingly popular among best-management practices (BMPs). They have recently sparked significant interest due to their ability to control stormwater quality. These systems face challenges in manipulating dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus species. This study reports the results of the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in two modified bioretention systems. The performance of modified bioretention with coconut and durian was compared. The modified bioretention system was evaluated as a single and a series. Sequencing these systems in a series maintained the continuity of nutrient removal. Both series efficiently removed NH3-N (97% in TC5, 95% in TD5), while the removal of NO3-N was moderate (65% inTC5, 67% in TD5). Good removal efficiencies of TP were observed in two series (84% in TC5, 81% in TD5). However, the PO4 removal was equalized in all series (98%). The TN and ON removal were poor and fluctuated with time and column number in TC5, the overall removal efficiencies were (69% and 43%), respectively, while in TD5 a significant fraction of TN and ON were removed (86% and 78%), respectively. As compared with coconut husk, durian peel is considered a promising material that can enhance the water quality in bioretention systems.
