Opis:
The morphology and intraspecific variation of Spiroplectammina spectabilis (Grzybowski) is investigated based upon topotype material. Linear measurements and eigenshape analyses of species of Spiroplectammina described from California show them to be conspecific with S. spectabilis. Two ecophenotypic forms are distinguished: S. spectabilis forma trinitatensis — a robust Eocene variety, and S. spectabilis forma perplexa, a minute, compressed form.
Na podstawie materiału topotypowego badano morfologię i zmienność wewnątrzgatunkową Spiroplectammina spectabilis (Grzybowski), (Foraminiferida, Textulariina). Analiza „eigenshape” pozwala stwierdzić, że największa zmienność istnieje w proporcjach spirali początkowej i że zmienność wewnątrz zespołów jest większa niż pomiędzy zespołami. Porównanie pomiarów S. spectabilis sugeruje, że gatunek ten stanowi zbiór form pośrednich, aczkolwiek można wyróżniać formy końcowe. Testy statystyczne przeprowadzonych pomiarów wykazują znaczną nierównomierność parametrów pomiędzy próbkami pobranymi z różnych rejonów. Znaczące różnice w grubości skorupki pozwalają na wyróżnienie dwóch form w obrębie badanego gatunku: S. spectabilis forma perplexa i S. spectabilis forma trinitatensis. Nazwa S. spectabilis forma perplexa może być stosowana do oznaczania drobnych i spłaszczonych form, zaś S. spectabilis forma trinitatensis dla form większych i bardziej wypukłych od typowych okazów S. spectabilis.

In South China latest Frasnian (Palmatolepis linguiformis Zone) the representatives of the order Atrypida (Brachiopoda) are most common in central Hunan Province. They are relatively rare in other parts of South China due to unfavourable ecologic conditions. Unlike most previously reported sections, including some sections in South China, the four Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary sections examined here do not show any evidence for black shale. Atrypids are abundant and relatively diverse about 15 to 20 m below the F-F boundary (six species), and very rare about 1-2 m below the boundary (with only two species). It seems that the disappearance of most atrypids occurred well before the F-F boundary. Nine species (including Iowatrypa? qidongensis sp. n.), assigned to six genera, are discussed and described.

In the Middle Miocene deposits of the Central Paratethys, lingulides, because of their low taphonomic potential, are very rare and difficult to identify. Two species of Lingula, L. dumortieri Nyst, 1843 and L. dregeri Andreae, 1893, have been recorded from the Badenian (Middle Miocene) of Poland. Re−examination of the specimens has shown that none of them can be referred to Lingula dumortieri (now Glottidia dumortieri). The rounded outline of the scar of the posterior adductor muscle and the lack of the septa indicate that all the specimens must be referred to the genus Lingula. Their valves appear to be slightly more convex than in other species of Lingula and closely resemble the Recent L. tumidula Reeve, 1841. We assign all the specimens of Lingula found in the Miocene of Poland to L. dregeri. Because our specimens are juveniles and some are broken we cannot adequately redescribe this species. Lingula dregeri was distributed in the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys (Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Romania), while Glottidia dumortieri occurs in the Pliocene of Northern Europe (Atlantic Province).

Caudipteryx zoui is a small enigmatic theropod known from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation of the People’s Republic of China. From the time of its initial description, this taxon has stimulated a great deal of ongoing debate regarding the phylogenetic relationship between non−avialan theropods and birds (Avialae) because it preserves structures that have been uncontroversially accepted as feathers (albeit aerodynamically unsuitable for flight). However, it has also been proposed that both the relative proportions of the hind limb bones (when compared with overall leg length), and the position of the center of mass in Caudipteryx are more similar to those seen in extant cusorial birds than they are to other non−avialan theropod dinosaurs. This conclusion has been used to imply that Caudipteryx may not have been correctly interpreted as a feathered non−avialan theropod, but instead that this taxon represents some kind of flightless bird. We review the evidence for this claim at the level of both the included fossil specimen data, and in terms of the validity of the results presented. There is no reason—phylogenetic, morphometric or otherwise—to conclude that Caudipteryx is anything other than a small non−avialan theropod dinosaur.

History of the Triassic land vertebrates comprises three successive global epoches referred to as proterosuchian, kannemeyeroid and dinosaur ones. The earliest and the middle epoches are typified by the regional faunal sequence of East Europe. The proterosuchian time spans here the Neorhachitome and Parotosuchus faunas, the former being directly correlated with the Induan-Lower Olenekian, and the latter with the Upper Olenekian (Spathian). The Eryosuchus and Mastodonsaurus faunas of the kannemeyeroid epoch in East Europe are Middle Triassic in age and correspond to the Muschelkalk and Lettenkohle respectively. An evidence is brought for contemporaneity of the proterosuchian-kannemeyeroid biotic replacement in Laurasia and Gondwana. This implies the Middle Triassic age of the Cynognathus Zone of South Africa and its equivalents in South America. The bulk of Lystrosaurus fauna in Gondwana is suggested to range over the most of, or the whole, Early Triassic.
Historia triasowych kręgowców lądowych na Ziemi obejmuje trzy kolejne epoki: epokę proterozuchów, kannemajeroidów i dinozaurów. Dwie pierwsze są reprezentowane przez regionalną sekwencję faunistyczną we wschodniej Europie. Epoka proterosuchów obejmuje tu faunę Neorhachitomi i faunę Parotosuchus. Pierwsza z nich koreluje się bezpośrednio z indem i dolnym olenekiem, druga — z górnym olenekiem (spat). Fauny Eryosuchus i Mastodonsaurus epoki kannemajeroidów we wschodniej Europie są środkowotriasowe i odpowiadają kolejno wapieniowi muszlowemu i Lettenkohle. W pracy podano dowody, że zastępowanie faun epok proterozuchów i kannemajeroidów nastąpiło równocześnie w Laurazji i na Gondwanie. To wskazuje, że zona Cynognathus w południowej Afryce i jej ekwiwalenty w Ameryce Południowej są środkowotriasowe. Przedstawiono sugestię, że większość fauny Lystrosaurus na Gondwanie obejmuje większą część, lub cały wczesny trias.

This paper describes a petrified trunk collected from a conglomerate bed of the Springhill Formation (Berriasian– Valanginian) in the Estancia El Álamo locality, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The fossil trunk is classified within the ubiquitous genus Agathoxylon and the wood anatomy shows a close affinity to that of Araucariaceae. This Patagonian wood has a distinct combination of anatomical characteristics unique among all known species from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Western Gondwana allowing to diagnose a new fossil taxon Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. Sedimentological and megafloristic proxies of the Springhill Formation suggest that Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. grew under a warm and wet climate, which indicates a subtropical to temperate palaeoenvironment. However, the large number of frost rings in the earlywood of this araucarian tree suggests that the palaeoenvironment at Estancia El Álamo was subjected to recurrent disturbances, most likely caused by regional continuous volcanic activity originating from volcanoes located far away to the west. This activity would have produced periodic stratospheric veils that promoted rapid decreases in surface air temperature; the wood response to such stressful conditions would have been the formation of numerous (at least five) frost rings. Although recurrent eruptions in Patagonia during the Early Cretaceous are well recorded, this study is the first to register eruptions recorded in a coniferous wood.

The Hettangian to earliest Sinemurian Vetigastropoda, Patellogastropoda, and Neritimorpha housed in the National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg are studied. Most of the species comes from the Luxembourg Sandstone Formation. This deposit formed along the southern margin of the London−Brabant−Ardennes Landmass, in a region that during the earliest Jurassic constituted a seaway connecting the Paris Basin with the epicontinental seas of the Netherlands and northern Germany. The systematic analysis revealed high diversity of the studied fauna; we identified twenty−two species, eleven genera, nine families, and six superfamilies. A new genus, Meiersia gen. nov., and three new species, Anodomaria schroederi sp. nov., Meiersia disarmata sp. nov., and Spirocirrus weisi sp. nov. are described. The fauna is dominated by pleurotomarioideans representing the genera Ptychomphalus, Pleurotomaria, and Trochotoma, and by the patellogastropod genus Scurriopsis both in number of species and specimens. The neritimorph genus Neridomus is also well represented. Among the accessory taxa, Anodomaria and Spirocirrusfirst appeared in the Late Hettangian of the Luxembourg area. Most of these genera show a species radiation in the Early Jurassic and are distributed over the western European epicontinental shelf, probably favoured by an east to west marine transgression which influenced wide areas from the basins of the northern Germany to the Paris Basin through the Luxembourg seaway. The evolutionary and palaeobiogeographical data demonstrate that this radiation was already considerably advanced in the Late Hettangian. This suggests that the recovery of the gastropod diversity after the end−Triassic crisis was relatively fast in western Europe.

The anatomy and phylogenetic systematics of a well preserved hadrosauroid dentary collected in the 1990s from uppermost Maastrichtian strata (within chron C29r) of the Figuerola Formation, in the Àger syncline of the southern Pyrenees in northeastern Spain are revised. The specimen represents a new genus and species of basally branching hadrosauroid dinosaur, Fylax thyrakolasus gen. et sp. nov. This taxon is the third hadrosaurid outgroup species erected in Europe so far and the stratigraphically youngest non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroid known to date. It is diagnosed on the basis of a unique combination of characters such as a dorsal region of the coronoid process that is at least as wide anteroposteriorly as 30% of dental battery length, a coronoid process inclined anteriorly less than 80º relative to the alveolar margin of the dentary, steeply inclined and flat occlusal surface of the dental battery, and dentary tooth crowns 2.8–3.3 times taller than wide without marginal denticles and with a pair of major long ridges on the enameled lingual surface. The parsimony analysis confirmed that F. thyrakolasus gen. et sp. nov. is a close outgroup to Hadrosauridae. However, we also found that it is sister to the hadrosauroid Tethyshadros insularis form the late Campanian–early Maastrichtian Adriatic-Dinaric Carbonate Platform (present-day Italy). Maximum likelihood reconstruction of ancestral areas on the time calibrated phylogeny revealed that the ancestry of the Fylax–Tethyshadros clade has Appalachian roots. This study supports an Asian origin for hadrosauroids and subsequent dispersal to Appalachia, where Hadrosauridae likely originated. In this scenario, the Late Cretaceous European Archipelago could have facilitated the dispersal of hadrosaurid outgroups from Asia to Appalachia.

The Silurian crinoids of Estonia are re−evaluated based on new collections and museum holdings. Nineteen species−level crinoid taxa are now recognized. All crinoid names applied to Estonian Silurian crinoids during the middle 19th century are disregarded. Especially significant is the fauna reported herein from the Pridoli because coeval crinoids are very poorly known from the Baltic region and elsewhere. One new genus and four new species are described from Estonia, namely Calceocrinus balticensis sp. nov., Desmidocrinus laevigatus sp. nov., Eucalyptocrinites tumidus sp. nov., and Saaremaacrinus estoniensis gen. et sp. nov.

The verneuiliid brachiopod Changshunella yangi gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Early Carboniferous Muhua Formation of Guizhou, China. This rather unusual form is characterized by having very small shell dimensions (2.6–4 mm in length), a very high flat procline ventral interarea, and by having three prominent plications on both valves that are arranged in opposed folding; the last feature is characteristic for the family Verneuiliidae. We suggest that the family has been derived from an offshoot of the stock that produced the superfamilies Spiriferoidea, Paeckelmanelloidea, and Brachythyridoidea by developing opposed folding and loss of dental plates or dental adminicula as exemplified by Verneuilia and Changshunella gen. nov.

Fissure deposits are notoriously difficult to date. But, determination of the age of assemblages they contain is crucial for the evolutionary conclusions based on them. The early Mesozoic karst infillings within the Lower Carboniferous limestone of the locality Czatkowice 1 (Southern Poland) containing a diverse terrestrial microvertebrate assemblage (see Borsuk−Białynicka et al. 1999 for review) were originally thought to be most likely Late Permian to Early Triassic in age. Subsequent study of the assemblage containing procolophonids, prolacertiforms, basal lepidosauromorphs, a basal archosaur and small amphibians (including a pre−frog) showed that it is Early Triassic, most probably Late Olenekian, in age because of the advanced dentition pattern of the procolophonids. The discovery of tooth plates of the lungfish Gnathorhiza, known to range from the Induan into early Late Olenekian (Vetlugian Superhorizon to Fedorovskian Horizon of the regional scheme) in Eastern Europe, has further enhanced the dating. The combination of procolophonid and dipnoan evidence now appears to restrict the age of the Czatkowice 1 assemblage to the Early Olenekian.

Calcareous tubeworms are common in the Artinskian (Lower Permian) shale and limestone rocks of the Wichita−Albany Group in central Texas. In some units they form small reefs of budding tubes spreading outward from a common origin. These tubular fossils have been traditionally referred to as serpulids, but here we identify them as microconchids (Helicoconchus elongatus gen. et sp. nov.) These microconchids are unusual because of their greatly elongated impunctate tubes with centrally pitted diaphragms. They also show two types of budding: lateral with small daughter tubes that begin as small coils, and binary fission that produced two daughter tubes of equal diameters. These microconchids flourished in shallow marine environments with a fauna dominated by mollusks, echinoids, and foraminifera.

Fossils of Osmylinae are rare, currently only one fossil genus of this subfamily is known, Lithosmylus which is recorded from the late Eocene Florissant Formation of USA. Herein, we report a new Osmylinae genus with two new species, Vetosmylus tentus gen. et sp. nov. and Vetosmylus maculosus gen. et sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou Village, Inner Mongolia, China, The new genus shares many apomorphic characters with extant osmyline relatives, e.g., forked subcostal veinlets in forewing; dense cross-veins present in radial sector, usually forming one complete outer gradate series in forewing; the region between MA and MP significantly broadened in hind wing, but with only one row of cells, implying a likely morphological stasis during the evolution of Osmylinae. The new genus Vetosmylus, the first and earliest record hitherto of Osmylinae from the Mesozoic, enhances our understanding of the early stages of their evolution.

Rugose corals and brachiopods across the Frasnian-Famennian boundary in Central Hunan, South China

Opis:
We present taxonomic revision of rugose corals and brachiopods from several Frasnian–Fammenian (F–F) boundary sections in central Hunan Province, China. Diversity of shallow−water rugose corals gradually increased during the Frasnian, but ended with sudden extinction near the end of Frasnian. Ostracods were abundant during the Frasnian; their extinction coincided with anoxic deposition of the end−Frasnian black shale deposits. The early Famennian ostracod fauna is of low diversity. The brachiopod fauna of the late Frasnian (Palmatolepis rhenana and Pa. linguiformis zones) is dominated by atrypids, small−sized cyrtospiriferids, and the rhynchonellid Hunanotoechia. All atrypids disappeared before the F–F boundary with highest rates of extinction below the boundary (probably low in the Pa. linguiformis Zone). The Frasnian cyrtospiriferid fauna is also of low diversity and dominated by small taxa. All but one of the cyrtospiriferid taxa crossed the F–F boundary. The early Famennian post−extinction recovery brachiopod fauna was the result of rapid radiation of new forms shortly after the terminal Frasnian event. The early Famennian fauna is characterized by diverse cyrtospiriferids, abundant Yunnanellina and productoids. Above the early recovery fauna another fauna was recovered, with brachiopods Hunanospirifer and Yunnanella and is correlated with the late or latest Pa. crepida Zone. Sinalosia rugosa gen. et sp. nov. (Productida) is erected.
