Harper's operator is defined on $\ell^2({\sym Z})$ by $$ H_\theta \xi(n) = \xi(n+1) + \xi(n-1) + 2\cos n\theta\, \xi(n), $$ where $\theta\! \in \![0,\pi]$. We show that the norm of $\|H_\theta\|$ is less than or equal to $2\sqrt{2}$ for $\pi/2 \le\theta\le \pi$. This solves a conjecture stated in [1]. A general formula for estimating the norm of self-adjoint tridiagonal infinite matrices is also derived.

We give several characterizations of the improjective operators, introduced by Tarafdar, and we characterize the inessential operators among the improjective operators. It is an interesting problem whether both classes of operators coincide in general. A positive answer would provide, for example, an intrinsic characterization of the inessential operators. We give several equivalent formulations of this problem and we show that the inessential operators acting between certain pairs of Banach spaces coincide with the improjective operators.

We consider a quasilinear vector differential equation which involves the p-Laplacian and a maximal monotone map. The boundary conditions are nonlinear and are determined by a generally multivalued, maximal monotone map. We prove two existence theorems. The first assumes that the maximal monotone map involved is everywhere defined and in the second we drop this requirement at the expense of strengthening the growth hypothesis on the vector field. The proofs are based on the theory of operators of monotone type and on the Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem. At the end we present some special cases (including the classical Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic problems), which illustrate the general and unifying features of our work.

Characterizations are obtained for those pairs of weight functions u and v for which the operators $Tf(x) = ʃ_{a(x)}^{b(x)} f(t)dt$ with a and b certain non-negative functions are bounded from $L^p_u(0,∞)$ to $L^q_v(0,∞)$, 0 < p,q < ∞, p≥ 1. Sufficient conditions are given for T to be bounded on the cones of monotone functions. The results are applied to give a weighted inequality comparing differences and derivatives as well as a weight characterization for the Steklov operator.

Using tools of approximation theory, we evaluate rates of bias convergence for sequences of generalized L-statistics based on i.i.d. samples under mild smoothness conditions on the weight function and simple moment conditions on the score function. Apart from standard methods of weighting, we introduce and analyze L-statistics with possibly random coefficients defined by means of positive linear functionals acting on the weight function.

We study convolution operators bounded on the non-normable Lorentz spaces $L^{1,q}$ of the real line and the torus. Here 0 < q < 1. On the real line, such an operator is given by convolution with a discrete measure, but on the torus a convolutor can also be an integrable function. We then give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a measure or a function to be a convolutor on $L^{1,q}$. In particular, when the positions of the atoms of a discrete measure are linearly independent over the rationals, we give a necessary and sufficient condition. This condition is, however, only sufficient in the general case.

We consider a generalized Hardy operator $Tf(x) = ϕ(x) ʃ_{0}^{x} ψfv$. For T to be bounded from a weighted Banach function space (X,v) into another, (Y,w), it is always necessary that the Muckenhoupt-type condition $ℬ = sup_{R>0} ∥ϕχ_{(R,∞)}∥_{Y}∥ψχ_{(0,R)}∥_{X'} < ∞$ be satisfied. We say that (X,Y) belongs to the category M(T) if this Muckenhoupt condition is also sufficient. We prove a general criterion for compactness of T from X to Y when (X,Y) ∈ M(T) and give an estimate for the distance of T from the finite rank operators. We apply the results to Lorentz spaces and characterize pairs of Lorentz spaces which fall into M (T).

Let T: H → H be an operator in the complex Hilbert space H. Suppose that T is square bounded in average in the sense that there exists a constant M(T) with the property that, for all natural numbers n and for all x ∈ H, the inequality $1/(n+1) ∑_{j=0}^n ∥T^{j}x∥^2 ≤ M(T)^{2} ∥x∥^{2}$ is satisfied. Also suppose that the adjoint T* of the operator T is square bounded in average with constant M(T*). Then the operator T is power bounded in the sense that $sup{∥T^i{n}∥: n ∈ ℕ}$ is finite. In fact the following inequality is valid for all n ∈ ℕ: ∥T^n∥ ≤ e M(T)M(T*). Suppose that T has a bounded everywhere defined inverse S with the property that for λ in the open unit disc of ℂ the operator $(I-λS)^{-1}$ exists and that the expression $sup{(1-|λ|)∥(I - λS)^{-1}∥: |λ| <1}$ is finite. If T is power bounded, then so is S and hence in such a situation the operator T is similar to a unitary operatorsimilarity to unitary operator}. If both the operators T* and S are square bounded in average, then again the operator T is similar to a unitary operator. Similar results hold for strongly continuous semigroups instead of (powers) of a single operator. Some results are also given in the more general Banach space context.
