Opis:: Let ũ denote the conjugate Poisson integral of a function $f ∈ L^{p}(ℝ)$. We give conditions on a region Ω so that $lim_{(v,ε)→(0,0)}_{(v,ε)∈Ω} ũ(x+v,ε) = Hf(x)$, the Hilbert transform of f at x, for a.e. x. We also consider more general Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals and give conditions on a set Ω so that $sup_{(v,r)∈Ω} |ʃ_{|t|>r} k(x+v-t)f(t)dt|$ is a bounded operator on $L^p$, 1 < p < ∞, and is weak (1,1).

Opis:: The conjugate gradient method of Liu and Storey is an efficient minimization algorithm which uses second derivatives information, without saving matrices, by finite difference approximation. It is shown that the finite difference scheme can be removed by using a quasi-Newton approximation for computing a search direction, without loss of convergence. A conjugate gradient method based on BFGS approximation is proposed and compared with existing methods of the same class.

Opis:: This paper is devoted to describing second order conditions in the framework of extremal problems, that is, conditions obtained by reducing the optimal control problem to an abstract one in a suitable Banach (or Hilbert) space. The studied problem includes equality constraints both on the end-points and on the state-control trajectory. The second goal is to give a complete description of necessary and sufficient second order conditions for weak local optimality by describing first the associated linear-quadratic problem and then by giving a conjugate point theory for this linear quadratic problem with constraints.

Opis:: Let (Ω,Σ,μ) be a measure space with two sets A,B ∈ Σ such that 0 < μ (A) < 1 < μ (B) < ∞ and suppose that ϕ and ψ are arbitrary bijections of [0,∞) such that ϕ(0) = ψ(0) = 0. The main result says that if $ʃ_Ω xydμ ≤ ϕ^{-1} (\int_{Ω} ϕ∘x dμ) ψ^{-1} (\int_{Ω} ψ∘x dμ)$ for all μ-integrable nonnegative step functions x,y then ϕ and ψ must be conjugate power functions. If the measure space (Ω,Σ,μ) has one of the following properties: (a) μ (A) ≤ 1 for every A ∈ Σ of finite measure; (b) μ (A) ≥ 1 for every A ∈ Σ of positive measure, then there exist some broad classes of nonpower bijections ϕ and ψ such that the above inequality holds true. A general inequality which contains integral Hölder and Minkowski inequalities as very special cases is also given.
