Opis:
Wedge cell filled with a homogeneously oriented nematic liquid crystal was exploited as an interference wedge to measuring indices of refraction. Interference fringes from the wedge were observed in polarised light in reflection or transmission mode of a polarisation microscope to determining ordinary and extraordinary indices of refraction or birefringence (i.e. anisotropy of both indices). The interference fringes close to wedge apex were uniform and could be well described in two-beam interference approximation. The refractive indices were computed with using simple formulae involving only distances between subsequent fringes in a cell filled with the liquid crystal and an empty reference cell. Several new highly-birefringent nematic mixtures produced in the Military University of Technology were investigated. The 6CHBT nematic was used as the reference material.

Opis:
The scope of an article that is presented below covers a preliminary analysis of a wireless link of ultrasound signal transmission in commercial radio frequency band (UHF). The radio link is used to transmit short ultrasound bat-like biosonar signals. Because of complicated structure properties and of transmitted signals the various methods of wireless transmission are shown. The hardware implementation consists of micro-electro-mechanical system microphone, microphone preamplifier and FM transmitter. At the end of the radio link a standard FM receiver is used. Since we use frequency modulation an influence of the radio link on received signal parameters is presented. The analysis of results provides us a set of information that might be used in designing of large scale wireless sensor networks for bats behavior monitoring.

Opis:
Static and dynamic reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) has been applied for studying the initial growth processes of ZnTe crystallized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on vicinal surfaces of GaAs(100) substrates. Atomically smooth ZnTe epilayers have been grown by MBE when in situ thermal desorption of the substrate protecting oxide layer was performed in the ultra high vacuum environment of the vacuum growth chamber just before the growth of ZnTe started. By gradual increasing of the substrate temperature of the crystallized ZnTe epilayers from 300°C to 420°C, when recording the RHEED intensity oscillations at these and eleven intermittent temperatures, it has been shown that the transition from the 2D-nucleation growth mechanism to the step-flow growth mechanism of ZnTe occurs at 410°C. Measuring periods of RHEED intensity oscillations recorded during the MBE growth processes it has been demonstrated that the growth rate of ZnTe at constant fluxes of the constituent elements decreases with increasing temperature from 0.37 ML/s at 300°C to 0.22 ML/s at 400°C.
