Opis:
Single pulse magic angle spinning ¹³C NMR spectra and the carbon spin-lattice relaxation times T₁(¹³C) were used for the study of morphology and molecular mobility in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) quenched in cold water after melting in a twin-screw extruder. The crystallinity of the quenched sample was found to be comparable with that of virgin material, and the decrease in dimensions of the crystallites grown after quenching was deduced from the single pulse magic angle spinning ¹³C NMR spectra. The spin-lattice relaxation curves for the carbons of the CO, CH, CH₂ and CH₃ groups were found to be bi-exponential, which enables the molecular mobility within crystalline and amorphous domains to be studied. The spin-lattice relaxation times T₁(¹³C) estimated for the carbons of the CO, CH, CH₂ groups show the chain mobility enhancement within crystalline domains of the quenched sample, but the influence of the quenching on the CH₃ group rotation and on the main chain motion within amorphous regions was not observed.

Opis:
Heat capacity and electrical resistivity of high-quality $Na_{0.77}CoO_{2}$ single crystals was systematically studied as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Anomalies at 20 K have been observed both in the heat capacity and the electrical resistivity. The broad bump in the heat capacity indicates a smeared magnetic phase transition. Magnetic fields up to 9 T, oriented perpendicularly to the ab plane, reduce the temperature of this anomaly in accordance with the assumption of A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The low temperature upturn observed in resistivity below 20 K for slow cooling is also suppressed by the magnetic field. This anomaly is probably the consequence of the interplay of several different mechanisms, including the Kondo effect, electron-electron interactions, and electron-phonon scattering.

Electrical resistance, transversal magnetoresistance and the Hall effect were studied on polycrystalline $CaTi_xRu_{1-x}O_3$ (x=0, 0.07) samples using a conventional Quantum Design PPMS-9 equipment in the temperature range 2-300 K and magnetic field up to 9 T. Substantial differences were found between the two samples: (i) opposite to the metallic character of $CaRuO_3$, the substituted sample has insulating-like electrical resistance;(ii) the magnetoresistance of the substituted sample changes the sign from negative to positive values with increasing temperature. The magnetoresistance of $CaRuO_3$ is negative, the sign reversal is induced by magnetic field and only at temperatures below 15 K, such a behaviour is predicted for clustered systems;(iii) the Hall voltage in pure $CaRuO_3$ also changes sign from negative to positive values above 35 K. This temperature coincides with the observed magnetic transition temperature, indicating that the magnetic state and the carrier character interrelate.

The influence of Ti substitution on the specific heat of the $CaTi_xRu_{1-x}O_3$ system at low concentrations x=0, 0.005, and 0.03 was studied in the temperature range of 2-300 K at magnetic fields up to 9 T. Small peak was revealed in the C/T vs. $T^2$ dependence at around 3 K, which are field sensitive (the electronic specific heat coefficient γlinearly decreases with the increase in magnetic field), and might be connected to some kind of magnetic ordering. The coefficient γis suppressed also by Ti substitution.

X-ray and neutron diffraction as well as magnetometric methods were used in order to investigate crystal and magnetic structure together with magnetic properties of nickel oxide NiO obtained from thermal decomposition of Ni(OH)₂. It has been found that crystal unit cell volume and crystal unit cell deformation parameter decrease with increasing decomposition temperature T_{d} while grain size increases. The results of magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements reveal a formation of antiferromagnetic order with uncompensated magnetic moment below the Néel temperature. Magnetization together with coercive field decreases with increasing T_{d}. The neutron diffractogram of sample obtained at 240°C indicates broadening of both the peaks of nuclear and magnetic origin. The magnetic ordering may be described by a propagation vector k=[½,½,½].

Magnetic and specific heat data of the TmRhX (X = Ga, Ge) compounds are reported. These compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure of the TiNiSi-type (space group Pnma). Magnetic data indicate that the compounds are antiferromagnets with the Néel temperature $T_{N}$ equal to 3.9 K for TmRhGa and 6.0 K for TmRhGe. Magnetic susceptibility of TmRhGe has an additional peak at $T_{t}$ = 10.6 K. In TmRhGe temperature dependence of χ"(T), the positions of both the peaks at $T_{N}$ and $T_{t}$ change with frequency indicating a relaxation process. These data suggest that with the decreasing temperature, first a cluster glass state and next the long-range aniferromagnetic order exists.

Magnetic measurements of $HoAl_{2}$ are reported. The compound crystallizes in the cubic $MgCu_{2}$-type crystal structure. $HoAl_{2}$ exhibits two successive magnetic transitions: below $T_{c}$ = 29 K a ferromagnetic order is formed while anomaly at $T_{t}$ = 20 K is related to reorientation of magnetic moment. Near transition temperatures a magnetocaloric effect with magnetic entropy changes -$ΔS_{m}$ equal to 6.3 J/(mol K) at $T_{c}$ and 5.0 J/(mol K) at $T_{t}$ for an external field $μ_{0}H$ = 9 T is observed.

The neutron powder diffraction measurements of the TmRu₂Si₂ compound in the temperature range 0.47-2.5 K have been performed. The obtained results confirm that this compound in low temperature has a tetragonal ThCr₂Si₂-type crystal structure (space group I4/mmm). The long range magnetic ordering was not detected up to 0.47 K.

The neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements of the nano-size $DyMnO_3$ manganite have been performed. The obtained results indicate that this compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the space group Pnma. The Mn and Dy moments order antiferromagnetically at different temperatures and form modulated magnetic structure described by the propagation vector k=($k_x$, 0, 0) with the different values of $k_x$ component for the Mn and Dy sublattices. The values of $k_x$ component for Mn sublattice increase with decreasing of the temperature and are smaller that in bulk compound. The wide Bragg peaks related to the Dy sublattice suggest that the magnetic order in this sublattice has the cluster-like character.

Flux pinning properties of single crystals and melt-textured samples of YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-x}$ were studied for external magnetic field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the CuO$\text{}_{2}$ planes (ab-planes). For H ∥ ab vortex behaviour is mainly determined by a very effective intrinsic pinning mechanism. The irreversibility line is located in the region of higher fields and temperatures in comparison with the irreversibility line for H ⊥ ab. In a single crystal for H ⊥ ab, we observed an increase in the critical current density j$\text{}_{c}$ with magnetic field - the so-called "fishtail effect" - in a very broad temperature range. For H ∥ ab, this effect is observed only at temperatures close to T$\text{}_{c}$, when the intrinsic pinning is much weaker.

The neutron powder diffraction measurements of the $NdNi_5Sn$ compound have been performed. The obtained results indicate that this compound crystallizes in a hexagonal $CeNi_5Sn$-type crystal structure described by the space group $P6_3$/mmc. The parameters of the crystal structure at 1.55 and 14.8 K are determined. In contradiction to the magnetic data the long-range magnetic ordering was not detected up to 1.55 K.

The discovery of high-temperature superconductors stimulated many groups of researchers to study properties of these materials. From the basic point of view the most important problem is to clarify the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. From the practical point of view the most challenging task is to find mechanisms of strong pinning of the vortices, and thereby to obtain materials with high critical current density. The aim of this paper is to discuss problems connected with critical current limitations and to present possibilities which offer irradiation effects with respect to critical current enhancement.

Opis:
Magnetic properties, including magnetic structure, of some RTIn compounds (R = Tb-Er; T = Cu, Ni, Pd, Pt, Au) with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type crystal structure are reported. Distribution of the rare earth atoms in the basal plane is similar to the kagomé-lattice. Magnetic moments are localized exclusively on the rare earth atoms and form different types of magnetic ordering. Experimental results are analyzed within the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida and crystal electric field frames. Monte Carlo simulations, including the $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$ exchange integrals between nearest and next nearest spins and Dzialoshinsky-Moriya interaction, were performed resulting in a number of magnetic phases, some of which are in good agreement with the magnetic ordering determined in the neutron diffraction experiments.
