Opis:
The hyperfine structure intervals for the electronic levels belonging to the terms $3 d^5 (\text{}^4G) 4s a^5G$ and $a^5P$ of a chromium 53 atom were precisely measured with the use of the method of atomic beam magnetic resonance detected by laser induced resonance fluorescence. Magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole hyperfine interaction constants (A and B, respectively) for the electronic levels of interest were determined with the accuracy of a few kHz. The high precision of measurements also enabled an estimation of the octupole-coupling constants (C).

Opis:
Two-photon spectroscopy has expanded the scope of studies of excited states of ions and has also enabled the examination of the validity of conventional theories. In this study, the direct theoretical calculation of the two-photon intraconfigurational crystal field transitions of $\text{}^{7}$F$\text{}_{6}$(Γ$\text{}_{1g}$) → $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{4}$ of Tb$\text{}^{3+}$ in Cs$\text{}_{2}$NaTbCl$\text{}_{6}$ has been performed, based on third-order perturbation theory including electric dipoles and spin-orbit coupling. The core 4f$\text{}^{7}$ ($\text{}^{8}$S $\text{}_{7}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ Γ$\text{}_{6}$, Γ$\text{}_{7}$, Γ$\text{}_{8}$) and 4f$\text{}^{7}$($\text{}^{6}$P $\text{}_{7}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ Γ$\text{}_{6}$, Γ$\text{}_{7}$, Γ$\text{}_{8}$) states coupled with 5d(Γ$\text{}_{3}$, Γ$\text{}_{5}$) are taken as the intermediate states. The calculated transition intensity ratios are in good agreement with the experimental results. In particular the two-photon transition $\text{}^{7}$F$\text{}_{6}$(Γ$\text{}_{1g}$) → ( Γ$\text{}_{1g}$)$\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{4}$ is allowed in third-order perturbation instead of the proposed fourth-order process by Ceulemans et al. using the Judd-Pooler-Downer model. The inconsistency between the two studies arises from the failure of application of the Judd-Ofelt closure approximation. The closure approximation does not only simplify the two-photon calculation but also sacrifices the physical accuracy by changing the selection rule of the two-photon transition from that of two electric dipole transitions to that of one electric quadrupole transition.

Luminescence decay curves for the $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ → $\text{}^{6}$H $\text{}_{7}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ emission of Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ in the cubic hexachloroelpasolite crystals Cs$\text{}_{2}$NaSm$\text{}_{x}$Y$\text{}_{1-x}$Cl$\text{}_{6}$ (x=0.005 to x=1) and Cs$\text{}_{2}$NaSm$\text{}_{x}$Eu$\text{}_{y}$Y$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Cl$\text{}_{6}$ (x=0.01 to x=0.95, y=0.05 to y =0.99) have been measured over the temperature range 10 K to 300 K using pulsed laser excitation into the $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ state of Sm$\text{}^{3+}$. The luminescence from this state is strongly quenched by cross relaxation to Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ acceptors and energy transfer to the $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{0}$ state of Eu$\text{}^{3+}$. The temperature dependence of cross relaxation and of energy transfer is discussed in terms of the involved mechanisms.

Formation enthalpies of (001) surfaces terminating ordered Ga$\text{}_{0.5}$In$\text{}_{0.5}$P and GaAs$\text{}_{0.5}$Sb$\text{}_{0.5}$ alloys were calculated using the VFF model. For several ordered phases, chemically ordered surfaces were found to be stable against surface segregation. In particular, even phases unstable against bulk segregation may be terminated by a stable surface.

Opis:
Time-resolved photoluminescence was used to study exciton recombination in deep CdTe/Cd_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}Te single quantum well. The width of the investigated well was 100 A. The study was performed at room temperature. The lifetime of the exciton determined in this work has a value comparable to that observed in shallow CdTe/Cd_{0.85}Mn_{0.15}Te quantum wells. A strong enhancement of the photoluminescence decay time with increasing intensity of the exciting laser beam is observed which is indicative of saturation of the non-radiative recombination centers.

In this work electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra of off-stoichiometric $Ni_{50}Mn_{35.5}In_{14.5}$ Heusler alloy ribbons obtained by melt-spinning method were measured. The EMR measurements were performed on the X-band (9.36 GHz) spectrometer. Angle dependences were registered for three orientations of sample, with the use of uniaxial goniometer at 300. The results exhibited magnetic anisotropy and were used for calculating the principal values of g tensor.

Electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed for two $La_3Ga_{5.5}Ta_{0.5}O_{14}$ single crystals doped with 1.96 at.% of Sm³⁺ ions and 3.8 at.% of Er³⁺ ions. Two magnetically inequivalent sites were found to be responsible for the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Sm³⁺ ions. Both sites reveal a low (at least C₂) symmetry with $g_{x}$~0.46, $g_{y}$~0.46 and $g_{z}$~0.52. The symmetry of isolated erbium ions is higher than C₂. From electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic susceptibility experiments it results that the ground state of Er³⁺ ions is Γ⁶ or Γ⁷. Below 51 K electronic transitions within Γ⁶ doublets take place. Between 51 and 60 K, Γ⁶ to Γ⁷ transitions dominate, while above 60 K mainly transitions within Γ⁷ doublet are active.

Magnetic properties which are related to the compositions on the grain boundaries of the NdFeB permanent magnets were studied at different hot working temperatures applied to the cast $Nd_{18}Tb_1Fe_{66.5}Co_5Al_{1.5}B_8$ ingots. Since the addition of Al caused the formation of hard magnetic μ phase between the magnetic NdFeB crystals after the pressing 800C $H_{c}$ value increased to the highest value of 8.21 kOe. According to the SEM micrographs and EDS analysis, the increase in pressing temperature, the atomic ratios in the NdFeAl compositions approached to hard magnetic μ phase with the increase in pressing temperature and its exact composition was obtained in the sample hot deformed at 800°C. Although the secondary μ phase with a high melting temperature is detremental to the alignment of c axis of the magnetic NdFeB grains along the pressing direction, we found that the magnetic properties of the magnets improve due to the presence of this hard magnetic phase on the grain boundaries.

Inelastic neutron scattering infrared and Raman spectra of the crystalline 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene were measured and compared with simulated ones by using the Gaussian 98 and DMol3 programs at density functional theory methods. Application of the double numerical plus polarization basis set for the crystalline state within the local density Perdew and Wang (PWC functionals) approximation quite well reproduces the low frequency bands related to the methyl group librational modes, which are very sensitive to molecular interactions. Infrared spectra for the crystalline sample and $CCl_4$ solution show spectacularly the change of low frequency modes by going from the symmetric $D_{3h}$ molecules in the gas phase to asymmetric ones in the crystal.

The anisotropic g factors $g_{∥}$ and $g_{⊥}$ of $La_2Ni_{0.5}Li_{0.5}O_4$ are theoretically investigated using the perturbation formulae of the g factors for a low spin $(S=1//2) 3d^7$ ion in tetragonally elongated octahedra. The studied $Ni^{3+} (3d^7)$ center arises from the original $Ni^{2+}$ capturing one hole by $Li^{+}$ doping. The positive anisotropy $\Delta g (= g_{⊥}-g_{∥})$ can be ascribed to the lowest $\text{}^2 A_{1g}$ state due to the obvious (about 0.14 Å) tetragonal elongation of the oxygen octahedron around the $Ni^{3+}$ site via the Jahn-Teller effect, and the effective magnetic moment is also interpreted in a uniform way. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental data, and the imperfection of the previous studies based on various adjusted tetragonal energy splittings without correlating to the local structure of the magnetic center is thus overcome in this work.

Opis:
The renewal of the second order nonlinear crystals is very strong in laser materials optics. We are involved in the search for new systems based upon highly nonlinear niobate crystal family. Among these crystals, Ba$\text{}_{2}$NaNb$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{15}$ is characterized by the highest nonlinear parameters but, unfortunately, it is difficult to grow crackless samples. The obtention of good quality and crackless Ba$\text{}_{2}$NaNb$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{15}$ single crystals doped with different concentrations of Nd$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ is reported. The crystals were grown as monocrystalline fibres by the laser heated pedestal growth technique. A new determination of the crystallographic structure of Ba$\text{}_{2}$NaNb$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{15}$ has been performed. The structure of fibres doped with 1 at.% Nd$\text{}^{3+}$ was found orthorhombic with the new space group Pba2 instead of Cmm2. The well-known twinning of Ba$\text{}_{2}$NaNb$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{15}$ due to the exchange of the a and b axes of the unit cell, which disturbs the optical properties, decreases as the Nd$\text{}^{3+}$ content of the fibre increases. Above 3%Nd$\text{}^{3+}$ ions, such monocrystalline fibres were found to be of tetragonal structure. Low temperature spectroscopy reveals that Nd$\text{}^{3+}$ ions substitute probably both Ba$\text{}^{2+}$ and Na$\text{}^{+}$ ions. The stimulated emission cross-section near 1060 nm of the $\text{}^{4}$F $\text{}_{3}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ → $\text{}^{4}$I$\text{}_{11}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ channel and its branching ratios are determined with the help of Judd-Ofelt analysis. This work shows that b-axis grown monocrystalline fibres are potentially self-doubling laser materials.

We report on the critical fluctuations from the magnetoresistance measurements in polycrystalline $(Tl_{0.5}Pb_{0.5})Sr_2(Ca_{0.9}Gd_{0.1})Cu_2O_{z}$ superconductor. The critical exponents have been calculated above the critical temperature $T_{c}$ as well as in the temperatures interval close to the zero resistance critical temperature. Above $T_{c}$ only Gaussian fluctuations have been observed in a three-dimensional fluctuating system. Additionally, far above $T_{c}$ the applied magnetic field induces the crossover from 3D to 2D fluctuating system. At the temperatures range close to the zero critical temperature the properties of the weak links are dominating and the fluctuating phase in each grain becomes long-range ordered as a consequence of the activation of weak links between grains.

The static magnetization of the EuBaCo$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{5.5}$ single crystals was measured from helium to room temperatures for two configurations of the applied field: parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis. The compound is antiferromagnetic from helium temperature to about 210 K. In low temperature region (below 45 K) the antiferromagnetism coexists with a spin-glass-like state. The metamagnetic field-induced phase transition was observed in the antiferromagnetic phase for magnetic field applied perpendicular to the c-axis. The spontaneous phase transition from antiferromagnetic to weak ferromagnetic phase was established to be of the first order. This transition is accompanied by the appearance of the intermediate state. The weak ferromagnetic phase exists up to T$\text{}_{c}$=240 K.

The intermetallic compounds $Yb_{x}Gd_{1 - x}Ni_5$ crystallize in the hexagonal $CaCu_5$-type structure. Based on wide ranging SQUID-type magnetometer, it was shown that the saturation magnetization decreases with growing concentration of ytterbium. The opposite tendency was observed for the Sommerfeld coefficient obtained in the heat capacity measurements. These results are confirmed using ab initio band structure calculations.

Thermoelectric power, electrical resistivity, I-V characteristics, relative electrical permittivity, dc magnetization and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements carried out on $Cu_5SbO_6$ showed p-type semiconducting behaviour with the activation energy of 0.24 eV as well as ferrimagnetic order with the Néel temperature of 5.2 K. The effective magnetic moment of 5.857 $μ_{B}$/f.u. revealed the orbital contribution to the magnetic moment. Large value of the relative electrical permittivity indicated that the $Cu^{2+}$ ions with the unscreened and unfilled electron shells are responsible for the polarizability and forming of electric dipoles.
