Magnetization measurements on zero field cooled (M$\text{}_{ZFC}$) and field cooled (M$\text{}_{FC}$) with temperature T were made on Fe$\text{}_{0.7-x}$M$\text{}_{x}$Al$\text{}_{0.30}$ alloys (where M = Co or M = V). Compared to Co and V free alloy Fe$\text{}_{0.7}$Al$\text{}_{0.30}$, our results revealed that an addition of small amount of M = Co with 0≤ x≤0.10 shows linear decrease in the transition temperature T$\text{}_{f}$ as x increases. Addition of small amount of M = V with 0≤ x≤0.1 shows gradual decrease in T$\text{}_{f}$ with increasing x. The relative changes in T$\text{}_{f}$ show that an addition of V atoms is of more significance than addition of Co atoms. There is a twofold decrease which could be attributed to the ferromagnetic nature of Co atoms and to the random fields.

Opis:
We investigated current-voltage characteristics of a lattice-mismatched GaAs(n)/Si(p) heterojunction. For low bias voltages at 77 K it exhibits a behaviour characteristic of the Coulomb blockade. We discuss why this unexpected phenomenon can occur in the investigated structures.

Opis:
Nematic liquid crystals are characterized by a giant optical nonlinearity which has its origin in the molecular reorientational phenomenon. Uniqueness of this nonlinear mechanism causes that response of the medium is dependent on many conditions. Among various circumstances, both an initial alignment of liquid crystal cell and geometry of the system are very important, but in this paper a significant role of light polarization in nonlinear effects observed in nematics is emphasized. Additionally, it is underlined that dependence on light polarization does not have only trivial aspect of initial conditions. More complex seems to be the fact that due to the high optical anisotropy of the medium the state of light polarization is changing on the way of beam propagation. As a consequence, the modifications of molecular orientation in the liquid crystal cell are strongly dependent upon light polarization.

Opis:
Calculations of the resistivity of liquid metals are performed basing on the structure factor a(q) which can be measured experimentally or calculated theoretically from the hard sphere model. The calculations are carried out by using the Ashcroft empty core pseudopotential in the framework of Ziman's formula along with different forms of the screening function due to Hartree, Geldart and Vosko, Hubbard, Overhauser, random phase approximation and self-consistent screening. The investigation is useful because it throws light on the importance of exchange and correlation effects in developing an appropriate description of the screening of ions by conduction electrons for calculating the resistivity of liquid metals.

Opis:
Theoretical analysis of light beam propagation in twisted nematic liquid crystalline waveguides is presented. Due to the optical reorientation nonlinearity, the light beam changes the direction of propagation and optical spatial soliton is formed. Modeling of such behavior is presented by using (2+1)-dimensional vector beam propagation method as well as simplified (1+1)-dimensional method. Although both approaches give similar results, the differences are discussed in detail.

Opis:
Dysprosium monotelluride is a metallic substance with one valence electron per formula unit belonging to the conduction band. It crystallizes in the defected NaCl-type structure (a= 0.6070 nm) with cation deficiency in the metal sublattice. AC and DC susceptibilities exhibit a maximum at 15 K and a second maximum at higher temperatures which position is field dependent.

Opis:
The experimental technique of spin polarised neutron scattering as used in magnetic form factor measurements is presented. An introduction to the interpretation and the calculation of magnetic form factors and magnetization densities is given. The experimental technique of neutron scattering theory as applied to elastic spin polarised scattering experiments is briefly introduced. The calculation of the magnetic form factor and the magnetization densities are considered for simple model systems such as a collection of localised magnetic moments or an itinerant electron system. The discussion is illustrated by an experimental investigation of the magnetic form factor in the heavy fermion superconductors UBe$\text{}_{13}$ and UPt$\text{}_{3}$. Magnetization density maps and magnetic form factors are presented, and their implications for other physical quantities are briefly discussed.

Opis:
The electronic properties of Sr$\text{}_{1-x}$A$\text{}_{x}$CuO$\text{}_{2+δ}$ (A = La, K, Ca) were examined. The crystal structure of the synthesized compounds was identified as orthorhombic with some admixture of tetragonal phase. For Sr$\text{}_{1-x}$La$\text{}_{x}$CuO$\text{}_{2+δ}$ the insulator-metal like transition was observed with increasing La content. The d$\text{}_{x²-y²}$ ground state of Cu ions was deduced from electron spin resonance measurements. The electronic state of Cu ions and their surrounding local symmetry was also found to be La and oxygen content dependent.

The concentrational behavior of the Curie temperature that describes the experiments for disordered alloys Fe-M (M = Al, Si, Ga, Sn) at concentrations of M lower than 10 at.% was obtained in the framework of the Hubbard model. The influence of the spin and charge fluctuations was investigated.

The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in $DyNi_{4}Si$ have been studied by the magnetization and specific heat measurements. The saturation magnetic moment in $μ_{0}H$=9 T is equal to 7.9 $μ_{B}$/f.u at 4.2 K. A significant MCE has been observed around the second order phase transition at $T_{C}$=11 K. The maximum magnetic entropy change is -Δ $S_{M}$=14.5 J $kg^{-1}K^{-1}$ for the magnetic field change of 9 T.

In the present paper the uniaxial cluster, such as Mn$\text{}_{12}$, is considered. For explanation of magnetization tunnelling in such a system, we propose to account for vibron excitations of Mn$\text{}_{12}$ cluster; the presence of vibron can reduce the symmetry of the system and create the second-order anisotropy in the basal plane, necessary for tunnelling. Using the fact that the vibron frequency is low in comp arison with magnetic moment precession rate, we calculated the rate of magnetization tunnelling within WKB-approximation using the instanton techniques. The exact analytic instanton solution was obtained for arbitrary values of the external field, uniaxial and transversal anisotropy. We discuss also the mechanisms of quantum oscillations of the parameters of tunnelling.

Opis:
Measurements of ordinary refractive index, birefringence, density, and order parameter were made on a technologically important nematogen and the data obtained for its nematic and isotropic phase were reported. A modified wedge method was used for the measurement of the birefringence (δ n). The nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature matches very well as is exhibited from the value of refractive indices and densities obtained using different techniques. The optical anisotropy and density data were used to determine the order parameter and principal polarizability of the nematic mixture using the Vuks approach and their temperature dependence was discussed. The macroscopic order parameter was obtained and compared with microscopic order parameter. These two values agree very well.

N-type indium doped CdTe grown on n$\text{}^{+}$-GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy has been studied by the standard deep level transient spectroscopy and the isothermal Laplace-transform deep level transient spectroscopy. It was found that the Cd/Te flux ratio strongly influences the deep level transient spectroscopy results. The unusual temperature dependence of the electron emission rate in films grown at nearly stoichiometric conditions may point out that the observed defect is resonant with the conduction band.

X-band single crystal EPR, IR and UV-VIS data are used to deduce a molecular and crystal structure of a new compound with a chemical formula Cu(3,5-dimethylpyridine)$\text{}_{3}$(NO$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{2}$. EPR shows that four magnetically inequivalent molecules exist in the crystal unit cell of C$\text{}_{4v}$ symmetry. IR spectra suggested that both monodentate and bidentate NO$\text{}_{3}$-groups exist in the crystal. A most probable Cu(II) complex geometry with d$\text{}_{x²-y²}$ ground state is a square pyramid with three nitrogens from 3,5-dimethylpyridine molecules and one oxygen from monodentate nitrato group in a basal plane and an oxygen from NO$\text{}_{3}$-group in apical position. There exists a chemical contact between complexes as it is indicated by the exchange interaction with |J| ≤ 1 cm$\text{}^{-1}$. It suggests that square pyramid complexes are arranged in polymeric chains with semi-coordination of bidentate NO$\text{}_{3}$-group to the adjacent Cu(II) ion. An extended analysis of an exchange averaging effect between EPR lines from two and four Cu(II) sites is presented with equations relating molecular and crystal g-factors.
