Opis:
Pollen morphology and pollen variability of Rubus gracilis were studied. A total of 260 grains from 13 natural Polish localities were examined. Important characteristics include: a stretched bridge; a visible pore area and endopores; ectocolpi arranged regularly, more or less evenly spaced or, more rarely, joining one another in the apocolpium, long (79.3% length of the polar axis) and narrow; exine sculpture striate, distinct; striae and muri of equal width, rather narrow; striae usually running parallel to the polar axis, sometimes forming semicircles in the apocolpium zone; with distinct perforations. The size, outline and shape turned out to be poor criteria when identifying the species. A statistical analysis of 10 quantitative grain characteristics showed their little variability. The highest variability was found to occur in two traits connected with d (the distance between the apices of two ectocolpi). Statistical studies revealed no differences among the grains from the individual localities, likely the result of apomixis.

Opis:
Four populations of J. communis L. subsp. communis of natural localities in forested regions of the Bory Tucholskie (Poland) were analysed in respect of phenolic compounds concentration and –glucosidase activity. The variability noted in needles was confirmed by adaptation changes; water-logged and poor insolated localities (deciduous mixed fresh forest, dmff – no 3 and coniferous mixed bog forest, cmbf – no 4) stimulated the phenolics accumulation and enzyme activity. On the contrary, the level of phenolics in unripe berry-like cones was almost two fold lower under disadvantageous juniper growth and fructification conditions, whereas the mature berries from poor vigour plants were characterized by higher concentrations of these metabolites. Obtained results show that morphological variation of juniper population was accompanied by variability in phenolic metabolism.

Opis:
Species of Gleditsia show considerable morphological variability that makes them difficult to distinguish using either vegetative or floral characters. Honeylocusts, especially the thornless cultivars, are popular ornamental, shade, street, attractive landscape trees. In this study the ISSR technique was used to evaluate the range of genetic variability between seven genotypes of Gleditsia cultivated in Polish dendrological collections [Gleditsia caspica Desf., Gleditsia japonica Miq., Gleditsia japonica Miq. var. korainensis (= G. korainensis Nakai), Gleditsia triacanthos L., Gleditsia triacanthos L. (bulk), Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis (L.) Zabel (bulk). Forty ISSR primers were tested and 18 were selected for their ability to produce clear and reproducible patterns of multiple bands.A total of 177 loci of 260-2600 bp were amplified, of which 89 (50%) were polymorphic, 14 (8%) monomorphic and 74 (42%) were accession-specific. Accession-specific ISSR loci were obtained for all of the seven accessions tested. A dendrogram generated using the UPGMA, based on a similarity measure of total character difference, showed that the Gleditsia accessions were clustered into two main groups (‘a’ and ‘b’). The first grup –‘a’– included: Gleditsia triacanthos L., Gleditsia triacanthos L. (bulk) and Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis (L.) Zabel (similarity 0.61–0.75), the second –‘b’– included 2 species: Gleditsia japonica and Gleditsia japonica var. korainensis (similarity 0.43). Analysis of the phylogenetic similarity dendrogram has shown wide range of diversity between studied accessions. The clustering pattern obtained in our experiment was in agreement with the data based on morphological, allozyme and ITS analysis.

Two-year needles were collected from 42 trees from 5 localities in Spanish Pyrenees. The needles were analysed in respect to 15 morphological and anatomical traits. Data obtained were subject of multivariate statistical analyses. The most stable traits appear to be width of epidermis cells, width and thickness of the needles and ratio of the last two characters. Number of the resin canals and the vascular bundles distance were the most variable characters. The differences among the 42 investigated trees are not evident, considerably small and not significant statistically.

W badaniach uwzględniono 15 cech morfologicznych i anatomicznych a uzyskane wyniki z pomiarów poddano szczegółowej analizie statystycznej.

The morphology and variability of pollen of Rosa pendulina L. were studied. The material came from 10 native localities of this species. 300 pollen grains were examined. It was established that the diagnostic features of pollen grains of R. pendulina L. were: an elongated, narrow operculum, a poorly developed exine sculpture, long ectocolpi (a low value of the apocolpium index), and the predominance of grains elongated in shape. The results obtained usually correspond to data supplied by other palynologists. A statistical analysis of 10 quantitative grain characteristics showed their variability to be rather low. The highest variability was found to occur in two traits connected with d (the distance between the apices of two ectocolpi). Provenance trials were designed to analyse the quantitative responses of tree species to environmental variables found in different experiment location. However, we have still limited knowledge how natural and artificial selection affects genetic variation of the species populations gather in such experimental sites. We have used bulked DNA-based RAPD and ISJ analysis to investigate genetic diversity and differentiation of Scots pine populations from two Polish locations of IUFRO 1982 provenance trial placed in Kórnik and in Supraśl. Applied categories of DNA markers differed in terms of revealing genetic diversity of the species. Ten RAPD primers applied in the study yielded a total of 75 bands, of which 21 (28%) and 15 (20%) were polymorphic in Kórnik and in Supraśl, respectively. Six ISJ primers revealed 42 bands of which 4 (9.52%) and 14 (33.3%) were polymorphic in Kórnik and in Supraśl, respectively. The genetic diversity and differentiation was low, as expressed by He=0.071 and He=0.085, and by genetic distance values which ranged from 0.0 to 0.240 (on average 0.081) and from 0.017 to 0.188 (on average 0.094) for Kórnik and Supraśl, respectively. Location of provenance trial appeared to have a significant influence on revealed level of genetic polymorphism and pattern of interpopulation differentiation. However, genetic structure found for analysed Scots pine provenances from IUFRO 1982 in Kórnik was also confirmed for Supraśl experimental site. In the light of available data we also discussed the influence of historical migration routes and gene flow on observed genetic variation of the species.

Opis:
The observed juniper decline, lack of natural regeneration, and disappearance of numerous populations of the common juniper in Poland, were the major reasons for initiation of research on its sexual propagation and seedling production. This study shows that seed dormancy in this species is broken by warm-cold stratification at 15°C/3°C, for 14+12 weeks, respectively. Seed drying for 72 h at room temperature in the middle of the warm phase (i.e. after 4–8 weeks of stratification at 15°C) and the following cold stratification at 3°C, cause a significant increase in seed germination capacity at cyclically alternating temperatures of 3~15°C, and in seedling emergence in growing trays (67 cells each) in a greenhouse. However, seedling emergence was over 2-fold to 4-fold lower in an open nursery than in the greenhouse. After sowing in the nursery, secondary dormancy was probably induced, because some seeds germinated in the following year. Some very young, 2-year-old seedlings started to produce male or rarely female cones. This study also showed that soil conditions of mother plants can influence the pattern of seed germination and seed ling emergence.

This paper presents the results of the study on morphological differentiation of seeds of five Polish species of the genus Sorbus L. (S. aria (L.) Crantz, S. aucuparia L. Emend. Hedl., S. chamaemespilus (L.) Crantz, S. intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. and S. torminalis (L.) Crantz). The biometric data of 1980 seeds were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis in attempt to define intraspecific variation and to find differences between studied taxa. Most of the seed traits are significantly correlated and are characterised by moderate level of variation. Seeds of S. aucuparia (both subspecies) are the least variable while seeds of S. torminalis and S. intermedia the most. On the basis of size and shape traits of Sorbus seeds only seeds of S. aucuparia can be definitely distinguished from the others.

This study investigates the effect of climate variability on the phenotype, leaf litter decomposition intensity and seedling spread of alien red oak (Quercus rubra L.). Twenty-eight red oak forest stands located in Lithuania were evaluated. Indirect climate change indicators such as continentality were used in the analysis. Simulation of climate warming was achieved using an agro sheet cover. According to the results, the morphological traits of red oak stems in the maritime regions (warmer winters) do not differ significantly from those of red oaks stems in the continental areas of Lithuania (colder winters, more frequent spring frosts). Red oak leaf litter under an agro sheet cover (warmer conditions) decomposes at almost the same intensity as without the cover (natural conditions). The red oak seedlings spread 100 m or more irrespective of continentality. These results showed indirectly that climate change will not affect red oak stem quality or microorganism activity in the process of leaf litter decomposition. Red oak will thus remain as an invasive species, threatening composition change in native forests.

The objective of this study was to investigate the ranges of intra- and interindividual variability on the example of R. canina. For this purpose, four flowers were collected randomly (72 flowers in total)from 18 wild shrubs of R. canina growing in one population in Poznań (Poland)and then, from each flower, 50 correctly formed pollen grains (200 pollen grains per each individual)were selected. Inter- and intraindividual pollen grain variability was characterised based on 3600 pollen grains. They were analysed for seven quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), thickness of the exine along the polar axis (Exp), length of ectocolpi (Le) and P/E, Exp/P, and Le/P ratios. Our study revealed highly significant differences among flowers of the particular R. canina individuals with respect to all pollen grain biometrical features. In addition, it showed that the assessment of the full range of variability in pollen grain biometric features within one individual (shrub)was more reliable if we examined several pollen grains from several flowers than for the same number of pollen grains derived from a single flower. We also found statistically significant differences among particular individuals in all pollen grain features. This proves that in order to well characterise a population of a given species from the point of view of palynology, the plant material should derive from a possibly numerous number of individuals (shrubs).

The results of measurements of 5780 acorns confirm that Quercus robur has acorns of langer size, as componed with acorns of Quercus petraea. Their length varied from 1.90 to 3.50 cm, with the average 2.71 cm, while in case of Q. petraea this characteristic varied from 1.60 to 3.50 cm, with the average 2.43 cm. The diameter of acorns was similar for both species. Dry mass of Q. robur acorns ranged from 1.054 to 4.937 g, on average 2.5924 g; in the case of Q. petraea it ranged from 0.835 to 4.796g, on average 1.8364 g. Taking into consideration the coefficient of variability of length and diameter, both species do not differ significantly. It ranged from 9 to 12%. In the case of dry mass the difference was larger and it was 23% and 28% for Q. robur and Q. petraea, respectively. The analysis of variance (F-test) showed, that the species taken as the source of variability influences significantly the length of acorns (in 17%) and dry mass (in 47%). Internal features determine these characteristics in 52% and 46%. F-test did not detect any dependence between oak species and the diameter of acorns.
