Opis:
The aim of this paper was to show how the shape of sand particles affects the results of particle size distribution obtained by the laser diffraction method. On the basis of the results obtained one can conclude: the shape of the investigated particles influences particle size distribution obtained by the laser diffraction method. This phenomenon occurs in the sand fraction, as shown in our investigation. The importance of this effect depends on the type of the measured material and on the aim of the investigations. For most researchers in soil science and sedimentology who investigate sand fractions, this impact can be negligible. Further investigations with other soil and sediment fractions are needed.

Opis:
Gasification biochar represents one of the biochar types tested for agricultural needs. The aim of this study was to clarify the physico-chemical and biological changes occurring in a peat-sand substrate amended with hardwood-derived gasification biochar in the rates of 2, 4 and 20 g l-1. The pH(H2O) of the substrate with 4 g l-1 and 20 g l-1 biochar was increased from 5.6 to 6.2 and 6.7, respectively. The testing of the substrate in the re- spirometry device showed that the increase in the biochar rate led to a decrease in the amount of CO2 evolved at the maximum pressure drop. The continuous decrease in pressure observed in the respirometry bottles filled with pure biochar allows explaining this effect by biochar sorption activity. Addition of 2 and 4 g l-1 biochar to the peat-sand substrate stimulated the growth of cucumbers in an 18-day pot vegetation experiment. An increase in the number of root tips and root volume with a decreasing average root diameter was shown in the presence of biochar. Stimulation of plant growth on the background of low rates of biochar requires a further study with emphasis on the specific combination of biochar, soil type, plant species, and climatic conditions.

Opis:
Quite large areas of the alluvial soils in the valley of the river Bobr were destructed by the sand and gravel exploitation. After the recultivation measures, which consisted of backfilling of the open-castwith waste aggregate, levelling the surface and putting on such prepared surface 50-200 cm of the stripping material, the yield was very low.The field and laboratory experiments have shown that during the technical operations the soil was compacted to such degree, that the root growth and water permeability was restricted to large extent. The soil compaction was noted in the whole soil profile. The evidences of this process were the high bulk density( often over 1,8 Mg m-3), very low water permeability values and low air capacity. The situation during the 12 years from the finishing of the recultivation has not changed.

Opis:
Model research on competitive sorption of heavy metal cations (Cu2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ ,Co2+ , Cd2+ and Cr3+ ) with Ph2+cations was carried out in the followingmineral soils: grey-brown podzolic derived from loess (Orthic Luvisols)using a dynamic method.Investigation on the course and the range of the sorption from the two- component solutions allowed to determine mobility of individual heavy metal cations in relation to lead (II) cations. At the same time, it allowed to evaluate their phyto-availability. Elements, which most easily entered sorptive complexes of both of the investigated soils were copper (II) and chrominium (III) cations. The rest of the cations showed different energy levels of entrance with simultaneous sorption with lead (II) cations. During competitive sorption of heavy metal cations, i.e. at saturation the columns with two component solution, the presence of the second, opposite process namely desorption of the following cations from the soil:Co2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ , and Cd2+ was observed. Desorption levels were characteristic for particular cations and depended on the type of soil.

Opis:
The objectives of the research were to: fulfil the preliminary assessment of the sensitivity of the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition models to variations of climate variables based on the existing soil database; validate the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition modelled outcomes against measured records for soil temperature and water content. The statistical analyses were conducted by the sensitivity analysis, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients and root mean square error using measured and modelled variables during three growing seasons. Results of sensitivity analysis demonstrated that: soil temperatures predicted by the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model showed a more reliable sensitivity to the variations of input air temperatures; soil water content predicted by the denitrification and decomposition model had a better reliability in the sensitivity to daily precipitation changes. The root mean square errors and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients demonstrated that: the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model had a better efficiency in predicting seasonal dynamics of soil temperatures than the denitrification and decomposition model; and among two studied models, the denitrification and decomposition model showed a better capability in predicting the seasonal dynamics of soil water content.

Opis:
Eight sandy and three loess forest and arable soils taken from the S-E region of Poland were used in the study. The following fractions of C were determined: total organic carbon, fraction soluble in 0.5 mol NaOH dm-3 (humic acids + fulvic acids), humic acids, fulvic acids, fraction soluble in 0.5 mol H2SO4 dm-3 (hemicelluloses) and residue. Quantity and quality of organic matter depended on horizon and soil use. The highest content was shown by fraction of humus acids and residue, whereas the lowest - hemicelluloses fraction. In most soils C ratio of humic to fulvic acids exceeded 1.0. On average, in humus horizons, it was higher in arable than in forest soils and in loess as against sandy soils. In sandy soils, a slightly higher content of humus fraction and lower residue one than in loess soils was found.
