The special section in the current volume of the Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences, entitled “Fractional Signals and Systems”, includes selected papers from the FSS17 International Conference, which was held in Łódź, Poland on October 9–11, 2017. The founder of the conference is Manuel Duarte Ortigueira from the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. The FSS17 is yet another in a series of conferences, which had previously taken place in: 1. Caparica, Portugal, 2009 2. Coimbra, Portugal, 2011 3. Ghent, Belgium, 2013 4. Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 2015. The FSS17 conference addressed a broad spectrum of the Fractional Calculus (FC) applications in technical sciences. Main topics included the fractional-order continuous-, and discrete-time linear or non-linear fractional-order control, dynamic system identification via fractional models, fractional order filtering, as well as image processing using fractional methods. The conference’s main organizers included the Institute of Applied Computer Science (Instytut Informatyki Stosowanej Politechniki Łódzkiej), the Lodz University of Technology (Politechnika Łódzka) and the Polish Information Processing Society – Łódź Branch (Polskie Towarzystwo Informatyczne – Oddział Łódzki).

Opis:
In this paper, a generalisation of previous author’s formulation of fractional continuum mechanics for the case of anisotropic non-locality is presented. The discussion includes a review of competitive formulations available in literature. The overall concept is based on the fractional deformation gradient which is non-local due to fractional derivative definition. The main advantage of the proposed formulation is its structure, analogous to the general framework of classical continuum mechanics. In this sense, it allows to define similar physical and geometrical meaning of introduced objects. The theoretical discussion is illustrated by numerical examples assuming anisotropy limited to single direction.

Opis:
The practical and asymptotic stabilities of delayed fractional discrete-time linear systems described by the model without a time shift in the difference are addressed. The D-decomposition approach is used for stability analysis. New necessary and sufficient stability conditions are established. The conditions in terms of the location of eigenvalues of the system matrix in the complex plane are given.

Opis:
In this paper three simplified forms of the fractional-order (FO) backward difference (BD) are proposed and analysed. Due to time and frequency characteristics criteria parameters of simplified forms of the FOBDs are chosen. Applications of the simplified forms of the FOBDs diminish a number of multiplications and additions needed to evaluate the FOBD. This is very important in real-time microprocessor calculations. It is proved that in a discrete state-space description of a fractional-order system one should correct the input matrix with simplified forms of the FOBD. Investigations are supported by two numerical examples.

This paper adopts a fractional calculus perspective to describe a non-linear electrical inductor. First, the electrical impedance spectroscopy technique is used for measuring the impedance of the device. Second, the experimental data is approximated by means of fractional-order models. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach represents the inductor using a limited number of parameters, while highlighting its most relevant characteristics.

Opis:
A fractional-order control strategy for a pneumatic position servo-system is presented in this paper. The idea of the fractional calculus application to control theory was introduced in many works, and its advantages were proved. This paper deals with the design of fractional order PIλDμ controllers, in which the orders of the integral and derivative parts, λ and μ, respectively, are fractional. Experiments with fractionalorder controller are performed under various conditions, which include position signal with different frequencies and amplitudes or a step position signal. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes and verify their fine control performance for a pneumatic position servo-system.

Customized patient drug delivery overcomes classic medicine setbacks such as side effects, improper drug absorption or slow action. Nanorobots can be successfully used for targeted patient-specific drug administration, but they must be reliable in the entire circulatory system environment. This paper analyzes the possibility of fractional order control applied to the nanomedicine field. The parameters of a fractional order proportional integral controller are determined with the purpose of controlling the velocity of the nanorobot in non-Newtonian fluids envisioning the blood flow in the circulatory system.

Responses of positive standard and fractional continuous-time and discrete-time linear systems with derivatives of their inputs are presented herein. It is shown that the formulae for state vectors and outputs are also valid for their derivatives if the inputs and outputs and their derivatives of suitable order are zero for t = 0. Similar results are also shown for positive standard and fractional discrete-time linear systems.

Opis:
The leader-following consensus problem of fractional-order multi-agent discrete-time systems with delays is considered. In the systems, interactions between agents are defined like in Krause and Cucker-Smale models, but the memory is included by taking both the fractional-order discrete-time operator on the left hand side of the nonlinear systems and the delays. Since in practical problems only bounded number of delays can be considered, we study the fractional order discrete-time models with a finite number of delays. The models of opinions under consideration are investigated for single- and double-summator dynamics of discrete-time by means of analytical methods as well as computer simulations.

Opis:
In the paper two non-integer order, state space models of heat transfer process are compared. The first uses a known Caputo operator and the second – a new operator proposed by Caputo and Fabrizio in 2015. Both discussed models are modifications of a known, integer order, state space, semigroup model of heat transfer process. Parameters of both models were identified by means of optimization of MSE cost function with the use of simplex method, available in MATLAB. Both proposed models have been compared in the aspect of accuracy and convergence. Analytical and numerical results show that the Caputo-Fabrizio model is faster convergent and easier to implement than the Caputo model. However, its accuracy in the sense of MSE cost function is worse.
