The paper presents some considerations about the market incentives for regional development. Its main objective is to identify the determinants of undertaking the implementation of good changes in larger areas, which are inspired by the demand for specifi c small place offers. This refers to regional conditions and needs, which are satisfi ed by urban areas. In central part of paper the list of factors was created, infl uenced on demand for the city products and over-local relations. The main thesis postulates the regional co-operation to summing the demands for products of different urban places, which can effect minimizing confl icts among cities in the region and generate more attractive regional offers. The case of that analytic approach is the comparison of Silesian cities inhabitants opinions with declarations about regional development strategic orientations in “Silesian Region Development Strategy ŚLĄSKIE 2020+”.

W artykule chciałabym zastanowić się nad tym, czy są możliwe (i jak) we współczesnej przestrzeni miejskiej wizualizacje znaków (nie)pamięci. Zagadnienie to zostanie omówione w świetle socjologicznej refleksji nad znaczeniem przestrzeni i miasta oraz na przykładzie szkicu ewolucji pomników: od tradycyjnie rozumianych, wznoszonych w przestrzeni publicznej po to, by upamiętnić jakieś wydarzenia lub wybitną, ważną dla zbiorowości osobę ku antypomnikom/antymonumentom jako współczesnej, krytycznej reakcji artystów na to, czym jest historia, pamięć zbiorowa, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tego, co z nich wypierane. Jako przykład możliwej, wielorakiej interpretacji antypomników w przestrzeni miejskiej analizie poddana zostanie idea upamiętnienia realizowana przez Guntera Demniga zatytułowana „Stolpersteine”.
The article discusses the possibilities of deploying multi-semiotic tools of (non) remembrance in contemporary urban spaces. The challenges of such deployment are discussed in the context of sociological and social-theoretical reflection on the urban human condition and the urban space as well as on the role of monuments in traditional pathways of urban remembering. Departing from the latter, I argue for new forms of commemoration and remembrance, especially via the so-called counter-monuments that constitute contemporary artists’ discursive response towards hegemonic narratives and practices of memory-making. As an example of countermonumental remembrance in contemporary urban spaces, I analyse Gunter Demnig’s famous Stolpersteine (stumbling-block) installations. Commemorating the Holocaust and placed across several major European cities, the Stolpersteine constitute a very prominent example of counter-monuments that both undermine the long lasting narrations of the urban history as well as propose new, ‘lived’ as well as dialogic format of dealing with the urban’s problematic pasts.

Od kilku dekad brytyjskie kurorty nadmorskie (w tym Blackpool) przeżywają głęboki kryzys spowodowany przeobrażeniami rynku turystycznego, trendów społecznych i gospodarczych. Sytuacja ta domagała się wprowadzenia przekształceń dla zaadoptowania do nowej sytuacji ekonomicznej, turystycznej oraz kulturowych preferencji odwiedzających. Wyzwaniem dla miasta stało się zdefiniowanie nowej - zdywersyfikowanej i zawężonej do określonego pola działalności i aktywności - oferty turystycznej.
For several decades, British seaside resorts (including Blackpool) have been going through a deep crisis caused by the transformation of the tourism market, as well as social and economic trends. This situation called for a transformation to adapt to the new economic, tourism and cultural preferences of visitors. The challenge for the city was to define a new - diversified and limited to a specific field of activity - tourist offer.

W historii rozwoju wielkich miast migracje ludności miały kluczowe znaczenie. Dysproporcja atrakcyjności migracyjnej polegająca na tym, że, miasta duże charakteryzowały się dodatnim saldem migracji w stosunku do miast mniejszych, jak również obszarów wiejskich, utrzymywała się aż do początku transformacji systemowej. Z dekady na dekadę udział napływu ludności na wieś, w relacji do odpływu, wzrastał najszybciej w wielkich miastach. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest próba przedstawienia zróżnicowania największych miast w Polsce pod względem obecnych i przyszłych, zakładanych w prognozie GUS z 2008 r., efektów migracji (sald migracji). Do analizy wybranych zostało pięć największych miast polskich (Warszawa, Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław i Poznań). Aby w sposób pełny pokazać zróżnicowanie zjawiska migracji wewnętrznych w badanych miastach, analizę uzupełniono o wskaźnik atrakcyjności migracyjnej. Jako miernik atrakcyjności migracyjnej przyjęto wskaźnik przedstawiający relację salda migracji do obrotu migracyjnego.
The goal of this paper is an attempt to present the diversity in the current and prognosed migration effects (migration balance) in the biggest Polish cities. Five biggest Polish cities (Warszawa, Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław i Poznań) are covered by the study. The analysis of the index of cities’ migration attractiveness presented in the study allows to get the more detailed picture of the mechanisms of internal migration.

The post-mining areas due to the difficulties of those, often associated with expensive activities, usually take the form of wasteland. In contrast, unavailable, unused and alien areas the mentality of residents, are identified with empty space. The purpose of the authors was to answer the question: Are post-mining areas becoming empty spaces? Her research basis was changes in the functioning of post-mining areas and empty spaces in Katowice – a city with a long-standing mining tradition. Using GIS tools, a spatial analysis was carried out to determine the empty spaces functions and the perceiving of the post-mining areas by residents or users of a given district nearby.

This study demonstrates possibility of simulation software application to modeling level of CO2 emission as a result of different land use development scenarios as well as different level of private and public transport investments in the city. Application of simulation software Visum and four stage approach for transportation model of Krakow agglomeration gives detailed information about influence of different policy directions onto CO2 emission in the city. This paper is focused rather on estimation of the vehicle kilometer travelled (VKT) then on modeling emission procedure and shows effects of different assumptions in planned transportation policy on emission level.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analiz symulacyjnych mających na celu sprawdzenie, jak zmiany w zagospodarowaniu przestrzennym wpłyną na poziom emisji dwutlenku węgla. Wykorzystano tutaj model symulacyjny aglomeracji krakowskiej wraz z prognozami. Modele prognostyczne zostały sporządzone dla trzech scenariuszy rozwoju miasta, parametryzowane przez różne rozmieszczenie zmiennych objaśniających model potencjałów ruchotwórczych (dane demograficzne, liczba miejsc pracy itp.). Dla każdego ze scenariuszy wyznaczono pracę przewozową, a następnie oszacowano poziom emisji CO2. W drugiej części referatu przedstawiono wpływ różnych wariantów rozwoju systemu transportu na pracę przewozową i w efekcie na poziom emisji CO2 . W analizach uwzględniono pełne ujęcie czterostadiowe ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podziału zadań przewozowych (zastosowano tutaj model potęgowy, kalibrowany przy wykorzystaniu układu wnioskowania rozmytego).

The author juxtaposes the ideas contained in the classic essay “Urbanism as a Way of Life” (1938) by the Chicago sociologist Louis Wirth with the Americanism of the New York painter Edward Hopper (active approximately 1900–1967). She seeks parallels between the sociological description of urban conditions and the paintings of an artist who was called the illustrator of the American lifestyle. At the beginning, she discusses American spatial philosophy and the premises of urban researchers connected with the Chicago School. Then she compares a portion of Wirth’s essay and Hopper’s work in terms of their portrayal of the metropolitan lifestyle. She describes the sociologist’s and artist’s pessimistic visions of urbanism, in which urbanization produces the depersonalization of interpersonal relations, isolation, anomie, and the consequent loneliness of individuals.

The author suggests that research into the socially constructed collective past should be expanded to include motifs of social memory that are negotiated in private discourse and emerge intersubjectively (often unconsciously) at the level of everyday life. She considers the relation between places of memory and memory of places, and between social memory and individual memory. The article is based on empirical material from the reminiscences of Wrocław inhabitants published in the book [Wrocław: I Remember… Wrocław. Pamiętam, że…], which was prepared in connection with Wrocław’s role as European Capital of Culture 2016.

According to U.S. Census data, New York City is the one of the main places of concentration for members of the Polish diaspora. Despite the fact that the migration stream from Poland to the United States is not as large as it was in the past; Polish immigrants continue to be in the top twenty ethnic groups coming to the city after 2000. The literature-both in Polish and English-lacks complete research about the Polish diaspora in New York City. This article attempts a description of Polish immigrants in New York City. In the analysis, particular attention is focused on general demographic characteristics and socioeconomic characteristics. Four dimensions of socioeconomic characteristics are included: education, occupation, income, and residence patterns. The sociological significance of the analysis lies in the fact that these characteristics provide us with the basic indicators of social status and give us a general picture of the group’s adjustment and integration, or lack of it, to the vertical structure of the host society.

This article surveys the relations between the Polish Radio and the German Broadcasting Corporation (Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft) in the interwar period. In its early phase the relationship was overshadowed by disputes over programmes on Upper Silesia and the takeover by a German company of the radio station in the Free City of Gdańsk (Danzig). After Hitler became chancellor in 1933 there was a marked improve- ment in relations: the two parties even made an agreement to relay each other's programmes. However, in September 1939 the German radio network (RRG) actively aided the German army in its invasion of Poland.
Artykuł omawia trudne relacje pomiędzy polską i niemiecką radiofonią w okresie międzywojennym. Zaczęły się one od sporów o treści programów na Górnym Śląsku i przejęcia kontroli przez stronę niemiecką nad rozgłośnią w Gdańsku. Po dojściu Hitlera do władzy relacje te się poprawiły, a nawet wzajemnie retransmitowano programy. Ostatecznie niemiecka radiofonia odegrała podczas inwazji Wehrmachtu we wrześniu 1939 roku bardzo niechlubną rolę, w istotny sposób przyczyniając się do ubezwłasnowolnienia społeczeństwa polskiego.

The article analyzes the environmental costs which consisted of determining the annual cost for gases and particles released into the atmosphere by city buses meeting the Euro VI norm. To this end, exhaust emissions of a city bus equipped with a conventional drive system were performed. The vehicle had a length of 18m and was powered by a CI engine with a swept volume of 10,5 dm3, with a maximum power of 240 kW. In order to measure the ecological indicators, tests were performed in real driving conditions using the PEMS system. The apparatus made it possible to measure the concentration of gaseous compounds and particulate matter in the exhaust, which made it possible to determine the road exhaust emissions of the tested vehicle. The research was carried out on a test route including urban and suburban roads in accordance with legislative guidelines. The measurements showed that the bus met the exhaust emission limits determined on the basis of measuring windows defined in relation to the work generated by the drive system. In addition to information on the emissivity of the vehicle, the annual emissions from city buses meeting the Euro VI standard in Poland were also estimated. The information contained in the central vehicle register for the number of vehicles registered in Poland that meet the latest emission standards has been used for this purpose.
