Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions
Opis:
In this article we analyse various methods of value approximation for Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWF). As PSWFs are not given by explicit formula, for any application their values need to be calculated based on their properties and connection to other functions. We will focus on three approaches – Legendre polynomials, Eigenvalues of Matrix Operators and Hermite functions. We then create an implementation and test its effectiveness by using is as a base for bandlimited signal approximation algorithm.

Opis:
Measures of divergence between two points play a key role in many engineering problems. One such measure is a distance function, but there are many important measures which do not satisfy the properties of the distance. The Bregman divergence, Kullback-Leibler divergence and f-divergence are such measures. In the present article, we study the differential-geometrical structure of a manifold induced by a divergence function. It consists of a Riemannian metric, and a pair of dually coupled affine connections, which are studied in information geometry. The class of Bregman divergences are characterized by a dually flat structure, which is originated from the Legendre duality. A dually flat space admits a generalized Pythagorean theorem. The class of f-divergences, defined on a manifold of probability distributions, is characterized by information monotonicity, and the Kullback-Leibler divergence belongs to the intersection of both classes. The f-divergence always gives the -geometry, which consists of the Fisher information metric and a dual pair of š-connections. The -divergence is a special class of f-divergences. This is unique, sitting at the intersection of the f-divergence and Bregman divergence classes in a manifold of positive measures. The geometry derived from the Tsallis q-entropy and related divergences are also addressed.

Opis:
This article presents methods and algorithms for the computation of isogenies of degree ℓⁿ. Some of these methods are obtained using recurrence equations and generating functions. A standard multiplication based algorithm for computation of isogeny of degree ℓⁿ has time complexity equal to O(n²M (n log n)), where M (N) denotes the cost of integers of size N multiplication. The memory complexity of this algorithm is equal to O (n log (n log (n))). In this article are presented algorithms for: - determination of optimal strategy for computation of degree ℓⁿ isogeny, - determination of cost of optimal strategy of computation of ℓⁿ isogeny using solutions of recurrence equations, - determination of cost of optimal strategy of computation of ℓⁿ isogeny using recurrence equations, where optimality in this context means that, for the given parameters, no other strategy exists that requires fewer operations for computation of isogeny. Also this article presents a method using generating functions for obtaining the solutions of sequences (սₘ) and (cₘ) where cₘ denotes the cost of computations of isogeny of degree ℓᵘᵐum for given costs p, q of ℓ-isogeny computation and ℓ-isogeny evaluation. These solutions are also used in the construction of the algorithms presented in this article.

Opis:
In this paper the application of so called wedge functions is presented to solve two-dimensional simple geometries of magnetostatic and electrostatic problems, e.g. rectangles of varying aspect ratio and with different values of the magnetic permeability μ. Such problems require the use of surface charge density, or segment source, functions of the form ρs = σa-1, where the power parameters, a, have special fractional values. A methodology is presented to determine these special values of a and use them in segment sources on simple geometries, i.e. rectangles of varying aspect ratio, and with different values of the magnetic permeability μ. Wedge solutions are obtained by coupling the strength coefficients of source segments of the same power around an edge. These surface source functions have been used in the analysis of conducting and infinite permeability structures. Here we apply such functions in a boundary integral analysis method to problems having regions of finite permeability.

Opis:
This paper presents an overview of basic concepts, features and difficulties of the boundary element method (BEM) and examples of its application to exterior and interior problems. The basic concepts of the BEM are explained firstly, and different methods for treating the non-uniqueness problem are described. The application of the BEM to half-space problems is feasible by considering a Green’s Function that satisfies the boundary condition on the infinite plane. As a special interior problem, the sound field in an ultrasonic homogenizer is computed. A combination of the BEM and the finite element method (FEM) for treating the problem of acoustic-structure interaction is also described. Finally, variants of the BEM are presented, which can be applied to problems arising in flow acoustics.

Opis:
The paper delineates a study of executive functions (EFs), construed as procedural working memory (WM), from a motivational perspective. Since WM theories and motivation theories are both concerned with purposive activity, the role of implicit evaluations (affects) observed in goal pursuit can be anticipated to arise also in the context of cognitive control, e.g., during the performance of the Stroop task. The role of positive and negative affect in goal pursuit consists in controlling attention resources according to the goal and situational requirements. Positive affect serves to maintain goals and means in the scope of attention (EF1), whereas negative affect activates the inhibition of non-functional contents, e.g., distractors and irrelevant objects (resulting in attention disengagement; EF2). Adaptation to conflict proceeds via sequential triggering of negative and positive affect (EF3). Moreover, it was demonstrated that the focus on action or reflection changes the scope of contents subjected to implicit (affective) control. Therefore, I suggest that the motivational system, to a large extent, plays the role of the Central Executive. The paper opens a discussion and proposes studies on affective mechanisms of cognitive control.

Theory of mind (ToM) refers to the ability to represent the mental states of others. The Executive Function (EF) refers to higher-level cognitive processes encompassing planning, inhibition, coordination, shifting, and coordination of action sequences. Current studies on ToM and EF suggest that these two cognitive abilities might be functionally or anatomically linked. Although the relation between ToM and EF has been widely investigated, the results remain inconclusive particularly when considering the functional architecture of a mature brain system. The present study aims to seek this lacuna with the use of neuropsychological methodology. The pattern of ToM and EF defi cits within patients with brain injury were investigated. We compared the performance of four patients with a set of tasks examining theory of mind abilities and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) assessing EF functioning. Results yielded a dissociation between ToM and EF, suggesting that in an adults’ brain executive functions are not necessary for inferring the mental states of others.

The form, waviness and roughness components of a measured profile are separated by means of digital filters. The aim of analysis was to develop an algorithm for one-dimensional filtering of profiles using approximation by means of B-splines. The theory of B-spline functions introduced by Schoenberg and extended by Unser et al. was used. Unlike the spline filter proposed by Krystek, which is described in ISO standards, the algorithm does not take into account the bending energy of a filtered profile in the functional whose minimization is the principle of the filter. Appropriate smoothness of a filtered profile is achieved by selecting an appropriate distance between nodes of the spline function. In this paper, we determine the Fourier transforms of the filter impulse response at different impulse positions, with respect to the nodes. We show that the filter cutoff length is equal to half of the node-to-node distance. The inclination of the filter frequency characteristic in the transition band can be adjusted by selecting an appropriate degree of the B-spline function. The paper includes examples of separation of 2D roughness, as well as separation of form and waviness of roundness profiles.

Two new problems are posed and solved concerning minimal sets of prime implicants of Boolean functions. It is well known that the prime implicant set of a Boolean function should be minimal and have as few literals as possible. But it is not well known that min term repetitions should also be as few as possible to reduce power consumption. Determination of minimal sets of prime implicants is a well known problem. But nothing is known on the least number of (i) prime implicants (ii) literals and (iii) min term repetitions , any minimal set of prime implicants will have. These measures are useful to assess the quality of a minimal set. They are then extended to determine least number of prime implicants / implicates required to design a static hazard free circuit. The new technique tends to give smallest set of prime implicants for various objectives.

The results showed that the asthmatic group revealed poor performances in the immediate short term verbal memory and the verbal working memory tests but not in the verbal learning test as it was compared to the healthy group. In addition, the asthmatic group revealed poor performances in the visual memory tasks compared to the healthy group. The results were explained in light of the assumption that poor executive functions might be interfere the process of managing the attentional resources which are needed through the process of memory encoding and retrieval.

The article is devoted to the social margin's role in the process of social change. The author aims at defining the concept of marginality and suggesting a typology of social marginality on the basis of social and cultural criteria. She distinguishes social marginality, cultural marginality and socio-cultural marginality. Additionally, she describes psychological marginality as a separate type. Social marginality is typical of people sharing larger society's values but performing only irregular functions in this society. Cultural marginality is characteristic of a group whose values are different than these of the larger society but which performs regular functions in this society. The author emphasizes the potential for incurring change that marginal groups possess: this potential could result in creative impulses or in destruction depending on the configuration of marginality and historical context. The following adaptive reactions of a marginal group could be distinguished: conformism, innovation, ritualization, retreatism or rebellion.

The goal of this study was to investigate heterogeneity in clinical symptoms and cognitive functioning among children with hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention using a novel approach that combined dimensional and person-centered perspectives. Executive, verbal and visuo-spatial functioning, hyperactivity-impulsivity, inattention, externalizing and internalizing symptoms were examined in 102 children (37 girls and 65 boys) at risk for ADHD and 62 children (31 girls and 31 boys) not at risk for ADHD in the age range of 8–10 years. We extracted seven groups with various profiles of psychopathological symptoms and cognitive functioning. We propose that symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in these groups are related to different cognitive and affective-motivational problems.
