Opis:
Results of experimental and numerical investigations of wood chips drying are described in the paper. Experiments are carried out on two test facilities: a small laboratory rig and a larger pre-prototype dryer. Both facilities are thorough-circulation convective air dryers. The first one is a batch dryer, whereas the second one is a continuous dryer with wood chips flowing down by gravity from a charging hopper to a gutter with the aid of screw-conveyor. The latter is considered a half scale model (preprototype) for professional drying installations. A low feeding rate of wood chips into the pre-prototype dryer makes the process quasi-stationary and the difference between it and a batch drying is negligible. So, most experiments at this facility were carried out as batch dryers with non-agitated packed beds. The investigations exhibit the same linear correlation between the mass of evaporated water from the packed bed and the drying air velocity for both facilities. Numerical analysis of the drying process is conducted using the Ansys Fluent software enriched in drying capabilities by means of self-written procedures – user defined functions. Simulations confirmed a phenomenon of a drying front observed in the small laboratory rig. A thin layer of wood chips comprises the whole heat exchange and moisture evaporation phenomenon. The drying front travels downstream in the course of the process separating the already dried layer and still wet layer.

The aim of this article is to present a modern method of convective drying intensification caused by the external action of ultrasound. The purpose of this study is to discover the mechanism of ultrasonic interaction between the solid skeleton and the moisture in pores. This knowledge may help to explain the enhancement of drying mechanism affected by ultrasound, particularly with respect to biological products like fruits and vegetables. The experimental kinetics tests were conducted in a hybrid dryer equipped with a new ultrasonic generator. The drying kinetics curves determined on the basis of drying model developed by the author were validated with those by the ones obtained from experimental tests. The intensification of heat and mass transfer processes due to ultrasound induced heating effect and vibration effect are analysed. The obtained results allow to state that ultrasound makes drying processes more effective and enhance the drying efficiency of biological products without significant elevation of their temperature.

This paper concerns convective drying of carrot preliminary dehydrated in aqueous solutions of three types of osmotic agents (sucrose, fructose, glucose). Three solution concentrations (20, 40 and 60%) were examined to work out efficient conditions of osmotic dewatering. The parameters such as water loss (WL), solid gain (SG) and osmotic drying rate (ODR) indicating the real efficiency of osmotic dehydrations (OD) were determined. The samples dehydrated with osmotic solutions underwent further convective drying to analyze influence of dehydration process on drying kinetics and final products quality. The quality of products was assessed on the basis of visual appearance of the samples and colorimetric measurements. It was found that osmotic pretreatment improves significantly the final product quality as the samples were less deformed and their colour was better preserved compared to samples, which had not been preliminarily dehydrated. Preliminary dehydration, however, did not influence significantly the overall drying time of the samples.

Controlling low-temperature drying facilities which utilise non-prepared air is quite difficult, due to very large variability of ventilation air parameters - both in daily and seasonal cycles. The paper defines the concept of cumulative drying potential of ventilation air and presents experimental evidence that there is a relation between this parameter and condition of the dried matter (sewage sludge). Knowledge on current dry mass content in the dried matter (sewage sludge) provides new possibilities for controlling such systems. Experimental data analysed in the paper was collected in early 2012 during operation of a test solar drying facility in a sewage treatment plant in Błonie near Warsaw, Poland.

The issue of the drying of woodchips is investigated in this paper. The most widespread type of the solid drying is a packed bed convective drying process with hot air as a working medium that is considered here. A comprehensive survey has proven a severe shortage of 3D drying-oriented computational fluid dynamics (CDF) packages for handling packed beds. This work was carried out by means of User Defined Procedures (UDF) – self written codes in C implemented in a commercially available CFD package – Ansys Fluent. A strongly flattened fixed bed of woodchips was investigated whose dimensions equaled to 1.5 m×1.5 m×0.2 m in length, width and height, respectively. In theoretical modeling woodchips were assumed as spheres of unique size settled in a cubic layout. The first period of drying was taken into consideration with the inlet air temperature 60 ◦C and humidity 0%. The temperature of the packed bed was set to the wet bulb temperature 21 ◦C. The vapor flux was implemented as a source term in the continuity equation. The core part of the UDF was a DEFINE_SOURCE macro that comprised the source term for evaporating water and partially the liquid water storage. As a result the drying air was humidified from initial 0%, to 22% along the bed, at a constant air enthalpy. The air temperature decreased from 60 ◦C to 38 ◦C, and the drying rate fell from 0.22 to 0.10 kg/m3s.

This paper presents a method for online determination the spatial distribution of the moisture content in material being dried. It might be essential for monitoring and optimal control of the drying processes. The proposed method utilizes electrical impedance tomography. As the exemplary material for experimental research the black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) was used. The relationship between electrical impedance of chokeberry and its moisture content was determined for wide range of frequency (0.02200 kHz). Experimental studies of the spatial distribution of the moisture content was performed in the cylindrical vessel equipped with 8-electrode circumferentially arranged. Voltage signal from the electrodes was acquired simultaneously using high-speed data acquisition module. Due to high impedance of the chokeberries, exceeding 109 Ω for dried matter, extraordinary instrumentation for stimulus sourcing and current measurement was necessary to be applied. On the other hand, raw chokeberries are characterized by several orders of magnitude lower impedance (103104 Ω), especially for high frequency. Wide range of observed impedance was able to be measured owing to use of the voltage stimulation instead of the current stimulation. The image reconstruction problem was solved using iterative Gauss-Newton algorithm in the electrical impedance and diuse optical tomography software package. The obtained results has shown satisfactory ability to localize insuciently dried part of the material. It was proved, that strong dependence between moisture content in chokeberries and its impedance in whole frequency range provides more meaningful information than simple resistance or capacitance measurement. Prospect for the improvement of the spatial resolution of humidity imaging was also discussed.

Since a few years ago, there is an increasing interest for utilization of transfer functions (TF) as a reliable method for diagnosing of mechanical faults in transformer structure. However, this paper aims to develop the application of TF method in order to evaluate the drying quality of active part during the manufacturing process of transformer. To reach this goal, the required measurements are carried out on 50 MVA 132 KV/33 KV power transformer when active part is placed in the drying chamber. Two different features extracted from the measured TFs are then used as the inputs to artificial neural network (ANN) to give an estimate for required time in drying process. Results show that this new represented method could well forecast the required time. The results obtained from this method are valid for all the transformers which have the same design.

An analysis of the effect of feed foaming on the efficiency of sunflower oil encapsulation on selected product properties is presented in the paper. Experiments were carried out in a pilot-plant concurrent spray dryer using the gas-admixing technique. The analysis of the product properties showed that the application of foaming makes it possible to control final product properties, e.g. apparent density, bulk density, distribution of particle diameters, etc. at a high efficiency of sunflower oil encapsulation.

This article presents a quality analysis of convectively dried fruits and vegetables with preliminary osmotic dehydration. Tests were carried out on banana fruit and red beetroot samples. Hypertonic solutions of fructose for the banana and those of sucrose for the red beetroot were used, each one at three different concentrations. After osmotic dewatering treatment conducted at different time intervals and after osmotic dehydration the samples were dried convectively until an equilibrium with the surroundings was attained. Osmotic dehydration and convective drying curves were determined. The values of Solids Gain (SG), Water Loss (WL) and Weight Reduction (WR) were measured and changes in the samples’ colour and shape after convective drying with and without osmotic pretreatment were assessed.

Linden honey ultrafiltration (15 kDa MWCO ceramic membrane) was performed as honey solution pre-treatment before spray drying. Feed and retentate solutions with the addition of maltodextrin as a carrier were spray dried. Drying yield and physical properties of powders were studied (after drying and after 12 weeks of storage). During ultrafiltration it was possible to remove some amount of sugars responsible for honey low glass transition temperature, while keeping protein compounds. Yet, it did not have a significant impact on the drying performance and improvement of powder physical properties immediately after drying and after storage. However, the possibility to remove sugars from honey solution by ultrafiltration can be an encouragement for further research.

The article presents an experimental-theoretical analysis of fluidised-bed drying of poppy seeds directed on minimisation of energy. The analysis was performed for a complete drying node incorporating a heat exchanger and a fan. Two complementary factors were used in the exergetic evaluation: exergy efficiency and unit consumption of exergy. An analysis of drying in stationary bed was carried out for comparison purposes. Results of the exergetic analysis can become a basis for innovative works focused on decreasing energy consumption of a technological node being analysed, e.g. by the use of recirculation of fluidising-drying medium.

The study presented here offers an analysis of the heat flow through the wall of the Yankee cylinder when regarded as a thin-walled vessel. The effect of the selected design and process parameters (i.e. cylinder diameter and steam pressure) on density of the heating stream has been analyzed and discussed for both cast iron and steel cylinders. Based on the work presented here, the optimal ranges for steam pressure have been derived and proposed for cylinders mounted at various locations within the drying section.
W artykule przeprowadzono analizę warunków przepływu ciepła przez ścianki cylindra połyskowego, potraktowanego, jako naczynie cienkościenne. Przeanalizowano wpływ wybranych parametrów konstrukcyjno-eksploatacyjnych (m.in. średnicy cylindra i ciśnienia pary) na gęstość strumienia ciepła w przypadku, gdy cylinder jest wykonany z żeliwa i ze stali. Ustalono optymalne zakresy wartości ciśnień pary dla tych cylindrów, usytuowanych w różnych miejscach suszarni w maszynach papierniczych.

The aim of the present theme issue was to study the influence of ultrasound enhancement on the kinetcis of osmotic dehydration and the effect of convective drying from the point of view of drying time and quality of dried products. Apple fruit was used as the experimental material. The kinetics of osmotic dehydration with (UAOD) and without (OD) ultrasound enhancement were examined for 40% fructose and sorbitol solutions. The effective dehydration time of osmotic process was determined. Preliminary dehydrated samples with OD and UAOD were next dried convectively with (CVUS) and without (CV) ultrasound assistance. The influence of OD and UAOD on the kinetics of CV and CVUS drying was analysed. The parameters of water activity and colour change were measured for the assessment of product quality after drying process.

The paper presents key assumptions of the mathematical model which describes heat and mass transfer phenomena in a solar sewage drying process, as well as techniques used for solving this model with the Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Special attention was paid to implementation of boundary conditions on the sludge surface, which is a physical boundary between the gaseous phase - air, and solid phase - dried matter. Those conditions allow to model heat and mass transfer between the media during first and second drying stages. Selection of the computational geometry is also discussed - it is a fragment of the entire drying facility. Selected modelling results are presented in the final part of the paper.

Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst is a very high-value medicinal plant that is commonly used for improving cognitive functions. However, the availability of very limited information on the drying method of B. monnieri has prompted to optimize a suitable drying method. The present study therefore aimed to evaluate the influence of the following six drying treatments on the quality of B. monnieri sample: microwave drying at 300 W and 600 W, hot air-drying at 50EC and 70EC, solar drying, and freeze-drying (FD). The quality attributes of the dried samples were comparatively analyzed in terms of color, total color difference, moisture content, water activity (a w), antioxidant activity, and bacoside A and bacopaside I content. The results of this study showed significant differences (P < 0.05) among the different drying methods in International Commission on Illumination (CIE) parameters, namely lightness index (L*), red-green index (a*), and yellow-blue index (b*), ΔE and a w values. Among the samples dried with the six drying methods, freeze-dried B. monnieri samples had an attractive color with the lowest total color difference value (11.415%), a w value (0.15%), and maximum bacoside A (3.389%) and bacopaside I (0.620%) content. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis showed no major difference in the functional groups in B. monnieri samples processed by the different drying methods. Considering the retention of quality after drying, FD was found to be very effective for future large-scale production of good quality dried B. monnieri products.
