Opis:
Energy and latency are the significant Quality of Service parameters of ad hoc networks. Lower latency and limited energy expenditure of nodes in the ad hoc network contributes to a prolonged lifetime of the network. Reactive protocols determine the route to the destination using a route discovery process which results in increased delay and increased energy expenditure. This paper proposes a new technique of route discovery, Dynamic Blocking Expanded Ring Search (DBERS) which minimizes time delay and energy required for route discovery process. DBERS reduces energy expenditure and time delay occurring in the existing route discovery techniques of reactive protocols. The performance of DBERS is simulated with various network topologies by considering a different number of hop lengths. The analytical results of DBERS are validated through conduction of extensive experiments by simulations that consider topologies with varying hop lengths. The analytical and simulated results of DBERS are evaluated and compared with widely used route discovery techniques such as BERS, BERS+. The comparison of results demonstrates that DBERS provides substantial improvement in time efficiency and also minimizes energy consumption.

Opis:
Abiotic stress responses are regulated critically at the transcriptional level. Clarifying the intricate mechanisms that regulate gene expression in response to abiotic stress is crucial and challenging. For this purpose, the factors that regulate gene expression and their binding sites in DNA should be determined. By using bioinformatics tools, the differentially expressed probe sets were studied. A meta-analysis of transcriptomic responses to several abiotic stresses in barley was performed. Motif enrichments revealed that AP2/ERF (APETALA2/Ethylene-Responsive Factor) has the most frequent binding sites. We found that the bHLH transcription factor family has the highest number of transcription factor members. Moreover, network construction revealed that AP2 has the highest number of connections with other genes, which indicates its critical role in abiotic stress responses. The present research further predicted 49 miRNAs belonging to 23 miRNA families. This study identified the probable conserved and enriched motifs, which might have a role in the regulation of differentially expressed genes under abiotic stresses. In addition to shedding light on gene expression regulation, a toolbox of available promoters for genetic engineering of crop plants under such abiotic stresses was developed.

Opis:
Ilustruję to krótką opowieścią o genezie pierwszych kwantowych modeli atomów.
If by “objective knowledge” we mean a set of theorems that are ono-to-one representation of reality, then scientifi c views are not objective. However, the growth of scientifi c views of the world is completely independent of personal desires and fears of researchers, as well as of group interests of scientists themselves or organizations that employ them. This growth is determined by: (1) collectively developed set of active assumptions, which is the starting point of research, (2) objective – under these assumptions – results of experiments and (3) objective laws of logic. I illustrate this by a short story about the genesis of the fi rst quantum models of atoms.

Opis:
Recently, business protocol discovery has taken more attention in the field of web services. This activity permits a better description of the web service by giving information about its dynamics. The latter is not supported by theWSDL language which concerns only the static part. The problem is that the only information available to construct the dynamic part is the set of log files saving the runtime interaction of the web service with its clients. In this paper, a new approach based on the Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) is proposed to discover the business protocol of web services. The DWT allows reducing the problem space while preserving essential information. It also overcomes the problem of noise in the log files. The proposed approach has been validated using artificially-generated log files.

Opis:
The article describes chosen, yet key parts of newly established European, infrastructural research and development project ARIES (2017-2020) - Accelerator Research and Innovation for European Science and Society, to be realized inside the framework of the H2020 programme. Two institutions from Poland participate in ARIES – these are Warsaw University of Technology and Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology. ARIES is a topical continuation of the previous infrastructural accelerator projects realized uninterruptedly since 2003 – FP6 CARE – Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe and FP7 TIARA – Test Infrastructure and Accelerator Research Area, EuCARD – European Coordination for Accelerator Research and Development, and EuCARD2. The article is simultaneously a part of a series of papers concerning the participation of Polish doctoral students and young researchers, especially from the Warsaw University of Technology, in large European and world experiments of the discovery class, including building large research infrastructures like: FLASH and EXFEL, ESS, ITER and DEMO, IFMIF, but also satellites built by the ESA, etc. ARIES embraces, among others, the following subjects: energy efficiency and management, cost lowering, miniaturization and ultra-high field gradients, promotion innovation, industrial applications, societal implications, new materials and components, new methods of particles acceleration including laser-plasmaparticles interaction, and building new generations of systems.
