Opis:
The combining ability effects of five silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) strains and their 20 F₁'s including reciprocals were analysed in a 5x5 diallel cross for seven silk yield attributes, viz. effective rate of rearing (ERR), a measure of survival, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, raw silk percentage, silk filament length/cocoon and silk reelability. Higher values of specific combining ability (SCA) than the corresponding general combining ability (GCA) for all the attributes except ERR and cocoon yield are indicative of non-additive gene action. The parental strain JC2P was the best general combiner for all the attributes, except cocoon yield. The highest general combining ability effect for cocoon yield was shown by N4. The highest desirable or positive SCA effects resulted from N4 × SH2 (all the attributes except shell weight), JC2P × 14M (all the attributes except cocoon weight and shell weight), 14M × SH2 (all the attributes except ERR), N4 × SPJ1 (all the attributes except shell weight and raw silk percentage). Only one reciprocal, namely SPJ1 × N4, showed positive effects for all the attributes except silk reelability. The improvement of cocoon yield through mass selection followed by intermating and the use of the parental strain JC2P in future cross breeding are discussed.

The latest Eurostat projections show that both population and labour force ageing change employment profiles by age in the European Union countries even in case of an increase in labour force participation and employment (The 2012 Ageing Report). My research question is how basic individual (such as age, education, household position, place of residence) and contextual characteristics (such as the business cycle and the regional labour market situation) influence on employment opportunities in Poland. I test whether the impact of different factors varies with age, which has been categorized to reflect different stages of the life course: youth and young adults (15–29 years old), prime aged (30–54 years old), and older workers (for women: 55–59, for men: 55–64). To answer the research question three types of multilevel logistic models were applied: (a) general models with age as one of the basic determinants, (b) models for each age group for non-agriculture and agriculture. The data used come from the Polish Labour Force Survey (BAEL) of the years 1998–2008 and regional labour market data. The analysis reveals that there are differences in influence of individual and context variables on employment odd ratios between age groups, sex and employment sectors.

The article is intended as a voice in the discussion on language aptitude, with particular regard to its two components: memory and language analytic ability. It will be argued here that – unlike memory, favoured by Skehan (2003) – it may be the language analytic ability manifested, among others, as considerable dexterity in retrieving constructional schematizations to decode language innovation, which grows in importance with learner proficiency. It will also be argued here that both capacities, the said ability as well as memory, should be considered in relation to working memory, which should be understood in terms of storage and processing considered separately and ascribed to individual differences, and not as a homogenuous storage-and-processing space.

Opis:
This work presents studies concerning the relationship between reduction of glass transition temperature Trg and the glass-forming ability of FeCoB-based alloys. On the basis of theoretical considerations, Turnbull [1] determined the reduced glass transition temperature (Tg/Tl) as being 2/3 of the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann (VFT) temperature; since then, continuous research has been carried out, aiming to calculate the Trg parameter and describe its relationship with glass-forming ability. In the majority of research papers, the reduced glass transition temperature is calculated from the relationship Tg/Tm, proposed by Uhlmann and Davies [2, 3]. On the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies, undertaken in this current work, the values of the following temperatures have been found: Tg, Tx, Tm and Tl, in addition to the temperature ranges: ΔTx, ΔTm and ΔTl. The correlation between: Tg/Tm, Tg/Tl and the glass-forming ability also has been discussed. Finally, for the investigated alloys, it has been found that the relationship proposed by Turnbull is reliable over a wide range of ΔTm.

Mortar feedstock is extruded to form bead and it is selectively placed line by line in the material extrusion additive manufacturing. With respects to part building process healthiness, load-supporting ability of overlaid beads is emphasized as buildability. Buildability is primarily dependent on thixotropic properties of feedstock and vertical overlapping schedule. In the present study, water-to-binder (w/b) ratio was chosen as material aspect to assess buildability. Uneven bead shape evolution and premature failure were highlighted owing to low yield stress of high w/b ratio feedstock. Feedstock with optimum w/b ratio showed good buildability even at the interval time of 19 sec.

The relationships between maternal parenting attitudes and preschoolers’ hot and cool executive functions (EF) were examined. Forty-eight children aged 3 to 4 years and their mothers took part in the study. Self-report questionnaire concerning parenting attitudes was obtained from the mothers of children who performed a set of EF tasks. Additionally, both maternal and child verbal ability were controlled. It was found that maternal parenting attitudes were related only to child cool EF. Protecting attitude was positively related to child inhibitory control and autonomy support was negatively related to child set-shifting ability. Further analyses revealed that maternal autonomy support accounted for unique variance in child set-shifting, above and beyond the child’s age. On the other hand, protecting attitude accounted for unique variance in child inhibitory control, above and beyond child verbal ability. The findings provide further evidence for the importance of mother-child relationships in children’s EF development.

When growing wheat, one of the non-chemical methods of weed regulation is to choose wheat varieties which have a high ability to compete with weeds. The first aim of the research was the estimation of the relationships between the morphological features and canopy parameters of six spring wheat varieties. The second aim was the estimation of the varieties’ competitive ability against weeds. The third aim was the estimation of the grain yield of the six varieties. The experiment was carried out in the 2011–2013 time period, on fields which had been organically managed since 1994. Different features affected the weed infestation levels of the spring wheat varieties. For Bombona, negative correlations between the number of weeds and the height, dry matter of wheat, and wheat density, were proved. For Brawura, Hewilla, and Żura, the height, number of tillers, and dry matter of wheat were the main factors influencing weed abundance. A strong negative correlation between the number of weeds and the dry matter of wheat was found for Parabola. Cluster analysis indicated that Bombona and Brawura were the most competitive against weeds, while Monsun and Parabola were characterized as being the least competitive against weeds. Weed number significantly affected the grain yield of spring wheat (r = –0.418). The grain yield was positively correlated with the number of tillers (r = 0.459) and ears (r = 0.355), and the height (r = 0.534) and wheat dry matter (r = 0.411). Bombona and Brawura were the lowest yielding varieties (3.03 and 3.20 t ∙ ha–1, respectively), whereas the highest yield was achieved by Żura (3.82 t ∙ ha–1, on average).

A new Computer-Aided Design approach is introduced for design of steel castings taking into account the feeding ability in sand moulds. This approach uses the geometrical modeling by a CAD-program, in which the modul “Castdesigner” is implemented, which includes the feeding models of steel castings. Furthermore, the feeding ability is guaranteed immediately during the design by an interactive geometry change of the casting cross section, so that a directional feeding of the solidifying casting from the installed risers is assured.

Opis:
Cyanobacteria (Cyanophyta, Cyanoprocaryota, Cyanobacteria) (blue-green algae) are procaryotic phototrophic microorganisms playing an important ecological role in the freshwater and marine environment as primary producers. However, as a consequence of water eutrophication observed in many reservoirs in different parts of the world, these microorganisms form massive scums, known as water blooms, releasing cyanotoxins hazardous to fish and other aquatic organisms. Cyanotoxins are cyanobacterial secondary metabolites of various chemical structures harmful to humans, terrestial and aquatic animals such as fish. The most abundant cyanotoxins are microcystins and hepatotoxins inducing toxic changes in fish liver, kidney, gills, digestive tract and immune system. Very little is known on the effects of alkaloid neurotoxic anatoxin-a on fish and their immunity. The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro influence of anatoxin-a on immune cells isolated from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). The leukocyte intracellular level of ATP was reduced only at the highest concentration of anatoxin-a. Apoptotic and necrotic leukocytes were observed at the lower and the highest concentrations of anatoxin-a, respectively. Elevated activity of caspases 3/7 after 2 hours and a concentration-dependent decrease in the proliferative ability of T and B lymphocytes was also observed. The results suggest that anatoxin-a could be a possible immunotoxic agent in the aquatic environment and may increase the susceptibility of fish to infectious and neoplastic diseases. Therefore, constant monitoring of anatoxin-a and its producers in lakes and fish ponds should be performed.

Opis:
This article presents the study regarding the problem of dimensionality reduction in training data sets used for classification tasks performed by the probabilistic neural network (PNN). Two methods for this purpose are proposed. The first solution is based on the feature selection approach where a single decision tree and a random forest algorithm are adopted to select data features. The second solution relies on applying the feature extraction procedure which utilizes the principal component analysis algorithm. Depending on the form of the smoothing parameter, different types of PNN models are explored. The prediction ability of PNNs trained on original and reduced data sets is determined with the use of a 10-fold cross validation procedure.
