A person is forced to travel constantly throughout its entire life. The more modern the society, the greater the pace of life, and the greater the need to be present in many places that are distant from each other. Rail transport occupies second place in this regard, after air transport. This means of transportation has many advantages, however the time of travel requires continuous improvement, in particular, to match the competition. One factor limiting the speed of travel is inter-operation between the wheels – rail kinematic pair. When rolling on a rail, a wheel is subject to wear, which unavoidably leads to its degradation. Frequent damage to both the wheel and the rail necessitates consideration of this problem. Because any changes to the rail are very expensive and time-consuming, this paper focuses on possible changes to the wheel. This paper is of an analytical nature and is based on sources in the literature, as well as on own simulations. The objective of the paper is to indicate the advantages of using ADI (Austempered Ductile Iron) as a material for the wheel of a railway rolling stock through analysis of available scientific materials and analysis based on a conducted simulation. The application of ADI on a large scale would certainly make a large impact on the development of railway engineering, significantly reducing the costs of manufacturing the product and its future exploitation.

Współcześnie zarządcy infrastruktury kolejowej, jak i samorządy lokalne, podejmują działania na rzecz odnowy i przystosowania obiektów stacyjnych do nowych warunków gospodarczych. Zmianom podlegają zarówno wnętrza dworców kolejowych celem maksymalizacji stopnia ich komercyjnego wykorzystania, jak i najbliższe otoczenie tych obiektów [Ledwoń 2006]. Zmiana funkcji zabudowań kolejowych z reguły odbywa się przez ograniczenie przestrzeni dedykowanej obsłudze pasażera z jednoczesnym rozszerzeniem tej przeznaczonej dla klienta, jednak dotyczy to głównie dworców o znacznym ruchu pasażerskim. Odrębną kwestię stanowią natomiast stacje obsługujące wyłącznie lub w znacznej przewadze, ruch lokalny, których współczesna rola jest marginalna, a niegdyś była istotna. Dobrym przykładem mogą być dawne graniczne osady kolejowe, których dworce stanowiły wówczas dominantę krajobrazową i odgrywały ważną rolę gospodarczo-urbanistyczną, a obecnie – jak i pozostałe elementy infrastruktury kolejowej – podlegają w znakomitej większości zaawansowanej dekapitalizacji. Przeważnie są to obiekty i układy przestrzenne, które zachowały dużą wartość historyczną, a także urbanistyczno-architektoniczną, jednak bardzo często brak jest pomysłu na takie ich zagospodarowanie, by stanowiły one składową samonapędzającego procesu rozwojowego. Dlatego też współcześnie decydenci stają bardzo często przed pytaniem – burzyć, odnawiać, czy rewitalizować?
The aim of paper is to show of the spatial and functional transformations of post-railways elements and areas with associated urban space. The study indicates the local urban and spatial policy diversity. Investigated problem is not individual, it is present almost at the most part of the railway settlements in Poland, but this problem is most marked in the case of settlements with border functions. The paper presented – in the light of broader background – two case study: Maczki (the part of Sosnowiec town) and Nowe Skalmierzyce town, the former railways settlements with border functions. Both of investigated locations are characterized by a great potential for economic development connected with infrastructure and the presence of post-railway areas, but they differ of post-railways forms localization within urban space. Indicated conditions impact on a different policy of local governments in the range of transport infrastructure management and development. The case of Sosnowiec-Maczki shows the pursuit of high rank complex project realization, while the activities of Nowe Skalmierzyce town could be compared to the method called “small steps” or “step by step”.

The acoustic climate assessment needed for the selection of solutions (technical, legal and organisa- tional), which will help to minimise the acoustic hazards in the analysed areas, is realised on the basis of acoustic maps. The reference computational algorithms, assigned to them, require very thorough prepa- ration of input data for the considered noise source model representing – in the best possible way – the acoustic climate. These input data are burdened with certain uncertainties in this class of computational tasks. The uncertainties are related to the problem of selecting proper argument values (from the inter- val of their possible variability) for the modelled processes. This situation has a direct influence on the uncertainty of acoustic maps. The idea of applying the interval arithmetic for the assessment of acoustic models uncertainty is formulated in this paper. The computational formalism assigned to the interval arithmetic was discussed. The rules of interval estimations for the model solutions determining the sound level distribution around the analysed noise source – caused by possible errors in the input data – were presented. The application of this formalism was illustrated in uncertainty assessments of modelling acoustic influences of the railway noise linear source on the environment.

In complex socio-technical systems there is an influence of safe unwanted events on the occurrence of accidents. It is like domino bricks. Therefore, it is not only the recovery from major events that is important, but also the recovery from disruptions in operation. As the literature review shows, the recovery of operation processes is analysed by single criterions for small disruptions. On the other hand, resilience research is focused on the network and major events, but not on frequent small-consequence events that affect operational processes. The performance of a system is a key parameter when evaluating resilience. As a result of the performed literature survey, the aim of the paper was to propose a new method for evaluating performance in terms of operational processes and resilience analysis. Moreover, it is also important to order the most important terms related to this issue, as well as to introduce new types of qualities, which are not only focused on the system, but also on the implemented operational processes. The paper consists of eight sections. The introduction section describes generally the problem, that leads to formulation of the aim of the paper and description of its structure. It is followed by the second section consisting of a complex literature survey. Section three orders the reliability, robustness and resilience definitions. Section four analyses the performance influencing factors using Fault and Event Tree Analysis, while section five defines the operational layer of the system and shows a formal description of operation processes. Section six presents the operation process evaluation model. It was elaborated using the Fuzzy Logic approach, that allows combining of incoherent system and process qualities: punctuality, probability no further delays, quantitative implementation of scheduled processes, reconfiguration level. Afterwards a case study is shown to present the method application. The performed case study shows the advantages of the proposed approach, which is related to the most common methods. The paper ends with conclusions and further research perspectives.

Aiming at the problems of the negative sequence governance and regenerative braking energy utilization of electrified railways a layered compensation optimization strategy considering the power flow of energy storage systems was proposed based on the railway power conditioner. The paper introduces the topology of the energy storage type railway power conditioner and analyzes its negative sequence compensation and regenerative braking energy utilization mechanism considering the influence of equipment capacity and power flow of the energy storage system on railway power conditioner compensation effect, the objective function and constraint conditions of the layered compensation optimization of the energy storage type railway power conditioner were constructed and the sequential quadratic programming method was used to solve the problem. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by a multicondition simulation test. The results show that the proposed optimization compensation strategy can realize negative sequence compensation and regenerative braking energy utilization, improve the power factor of traction substations when the system equipment capacity is limited and it also has good realtime performance.

This paper presents the result of research on the impulsive components of a railway noise generated during passage through a railroad switch compared with a typical rail noise and evaluation of this phenomenon with particular emphasis on impulsive sounds. The study includes the analysis of the source of impulsive components in the railway noise, the methodology of measurement and data analysis. Spectral analysis of typical fragments passing through a railroad switch is given together with a proposal of additional indicators to assess the noise. Authors propose three descriptors of the impulsive noise such as spectral centroid, kurtosis and impulsiveness, and show that these descriptors can be useful in assessment of the impulsive noise generated during trains’ crossing.

The railway and the Rail Traffic Control Systems installed on it in Poland have recently experienced rapid technological development. This is undoubtedly due to the funds that Poland receives from the European Union for the modernization of railway infrastructure. The development of modern railway infrastructure means not only stations, modern rolling stock, but also safe and reliable train control systems based on the latest telecommunications and information technologies. For a longer time, radio communication based on the GSM-R (GSM for Railways) standard is being introduced on PKP. For this purpose, dedicated infrastructure is being built in order to use this technology for railway traffic. This is associated with huge investment costs. Since the beginning of its existence, research has been conducted worldwide on the use of LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology for conducting railway traffic. For economic and technological reasons, it is necessary to study other possibilities of using modern telecommunications infrastructure not yet dedicated to railway tasks in these open networks. The article will present research on the use of open radio communication network based on LTE standard for rail traffic and passenger comfort. It will discuss the research method and selected results of measurements made on railway line no. 4. The choice of this railway line was dictated by two factors. The first one resulted from the maximum train speed, the second one is the variety of rolling stock used on this line (compartmental and non-compartmental wagons). The part of research concerning collection of measurement material was performed within the framework of completed research work PBS3/A6/29/2015. As a result of conducted in-depth literature analysis as well as performed measurements and calculations, it allowed to develop a model and software for simulating system operation in real conditions. This system allows to send railway telegrams on appropriate safety level defined in standardization documents. The research proved the possibility of using an open system in the LTE standard for the transmission of signals for railway traffic control and passengers while maintaining an appropriate level of safety. The only limitations which were indicated by the tests are improper radio interface coverage of railway lines. Appropriate planning of radio coverage of railway areas by radio communication operators (so far ignored) with proper cooperation of infrastructure manager can lead to launching efficient communication system without necessity to build specialized infrastructure for railway.

The paper presents the impact of exceeding the railway rails lifespan which usually causes a railway structural failure, thus an accident. The research highlights the rails’s high degradation, especially on the running area, consisting in 60-70% weight loss by advanced wear of the rail, followed by fatigue fracture caused by alternating cyclic stresses that initiates the crack and also by tensile stresses resulting in the crack growth. The chemical composition, structural and mechanical properties were analyzed in order to establish the causes that led to the railway rails rupture.

Opis:
The influence of the shock processes on railway vehicles with one-stage spring suspension is analyzed in this paper. These processes are excited in normal operation. Kinetic energy is lost as a result of the shock loads. Expressions are derived to calculate the kinetic energy of the different units and of the railway vehicle as a whole. These expressions allow calculating the loss of the kinetic energy of the mechanical system. Another objective of this work is to solve optimization tasks. This optimization allows the parameters of the railway vehicle to be chosen so that the loss of kinetic energy to be minimal and the effective work of the transport vehicle to be guaranteed in normal operation.
W niniejszym artykule analizowany jest wpływ procesów drgań w pojazdach kolejowych z jednostopniowym zawieszeniem. Procesy te wzbudzane są w czasie normalnej pracy, a energia kinetyczna jest tracona w wyniku obciążeń udarowych. Wyrażenia są dedykowane do obliczania energii kinetycznej różnych jednostek oraz pojazdu kolejowego jako całości. Wyrażenia te umożliwiają obliczenie straty energii kinetycznej układu mechanicznego. Innym celem tej pracy jest rozwiązanie zadania optymalizacji. Optymalizacja ta umożliwia wybór parametrów pojazdu szynowego tak, aby strata energii kinetycznej była minimalna, a pojazd transportowy gwarantował efektywną pracę w normalnych warunkach.

Safety of the railway transport is extremely important issue, thus it has to be supported by numerous of terms. It is not only the legislation and organization or traffic control but also the proper quality of every devices in the railway infrastructure. The paper deals with safety in the rail industry. Companies and producers of railway equipment have to guarantee the best quality, maintenance and reliability. Safety is also a device directly responsible for protecting e.g. level crossings but also safety in terms of design and construction. Supervision of products is fulfilled in Poland by e.g. the Office of Railway Transport managing the safety and regulation of rail traffic. The paper presents industry security in terms of product as safety in design and production, in construction, in exploitation. Despite such extensive, multisector and multifaceted organizational, legal and technical safety structures in rail transport it is advisable to conduct further research into the analysis of the possibilities for improved safety. Also authors have assumed that for the improving of railway crossing safety level the support system for the traffic detection can be developed. To increase of the complex crossing safety level the support system has to be independent from current usage control devices, as axle counter block. Thus the paper presents concept of application of vibration wave propagation employing as source if information on train or car detection.

This work deals with the effect of austempering temperature and time on the microstructure and content of retained austenite of a selected cast steel assigned as a material used for frogs in railway crossovers. Bainitic cast steel was austempered at 400°C, 450°C and 500°C for two selected times (0.5 h, 4.0 h) to study the evolution of the microstructure and retained austenite content. The microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), and hardness tests. Phase transformations during and after austempering were determined by dilatometric methods.The increase in isothermal temperature causes an increase in time to start of bainitic transformation from 0.25 to 1.5 s. However, another increase in temperature to 500°C shifts the incubation time to as much as 11 s. The time after which the transformations have ended at individual temperatures is similar and equal to about 300 s (6 min.). The dilatation effects are directly related to the amount of bainite formation. Based on these we can conclude that the temperature effect in the case of cast steel is inversely proportional to the amount of bainite formed. The largest effect can be distinguished in the case of the sample austempered at 400°C and the smallest at 500°C. Summarizing the dilatometric results, we can conclude that an increase in austempering temperature causes an increase in austenite stability. In other words, the chemical composition lowers (shifts to lower temperatures) the range of bainite transformation. It is possible that at higher austempering temperatures we will receive only stable austenite without any transformation. This is indicated by the hatched area in Figure 4b. This means that the heat treatment of cast steel into bainite is limited on both sides by martensitic transformation and the range of stable austenite. The paper attempts to estimate the content of retained austenite with X-ray diffraction.

This work deals with the effect of heat treatment on a microstructure and mechanical properties of a selected cast steel assigned as a material used for frogs in railway crossovers. Materials used nowadays in the railway industry for frogs e.g. Hadfield cast steel (GX120Mn13) or wrougth pearlitic steel (eg. R260) do not fulfil all exploitation requirements indicated in the UIC (International Union of Railways) Decision No. 1692/96 in terms of train speed that should be reached on railways. One of the possible solution is using a cast steel with bainitic or bainitic-martensitic microstructure that allows to gain high strength properties the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1400 MPa, the tensile yield strength (TYS) of 900 MPa and the hardness of up to 400 BHN. The tested material is considered as an alternative to Hadfield cast steel that is currently used for railway frogs. Results of an experimental analysis of the effect of conducted heat treatment on a microstructure, the volume fraction of retained austenite and mechanical properties of bainitic steel, are shown in this paper. It was found that, the heat treatment leads to a stabilization of retained austenite in grain boundaries area of the primary austenite. Additionally, the heat treatment according to the variant #3 results with an almost 3-times higher impact toughness to that exhibited by material subjected to the other treatments.

Opis:
The paper presents a summary of research on the possibility of influencing the state of residual stresses in railway rails by changing the pass design of vertical and horizontal straightener rollers and optimising their distribution on the rail perimeter. The presented results are devoted to the influence of profiled rollers on the level of residual stresses. A wide range of theoretical considerations were carried out based on the use of the finite element method using the commercial Forge software package. In order to verify the results of the theoretical considerations most reliably, a series of “in situ” experiments were conducted in industrial conditions on an existing production line. The tests were carried out on 120 meters long 60E1 railway rails. A significant reduction in the level of residual stresses compared to the standard requirements was achieved.
