Opis:
Structural design analyses of industrial dye mixing machines, concerning mixing impeller geometries, mixing performances, and power requirements aren’t generally of scientific quality. Our aim is to propose a practical method for minimizing execution time, using parametric design. In this study, Visual Basic API codes are developed in order to model the impellers in SolidWork, sup>R software, and then flow analyses are conducted. Thus, velocity values and moment/torque values required for mixing operation are determined. This study is carried out for different shaft rotational speeds and different impeller diameters. Flow trajectories are obtained. After that, frequency analyses are conducted and natural frequency values are obtained. In the scope of this study, two different impeller types are investigated.

Opis:
Design closure, i.e., adjustment of geometry parameters to boost the performance, is a challenging stage of antenna design process. Given complexity of contemporary structures, reliable parameter tuning requires numerical optimization and can be executed using local algorithms. Yet, EM-driven optimization is a computationally expensive endeavour and reducing its cost is highly desirable. In this paper, a modification of the trust-region gradient search algorithm is proposed for accelerated optimization of antenna structures. The algorithm is based on sparse updates of antenna sensitivities involving various methods that include the Broyden formula used for selected parameters, as well as dimensionality- and convergence-dependent acceptance thresholds which enable additional speedup, and make the procedure easy to tune for various numbers of antenna parameters. Comprehensive verification executed for a set of benchmark antennas delivers consistent results and considerable cost reduction of up to 60 percent with respect to the reference algorithm. Experimental validation is also provided.

Opis:
Modern man-made engineering materials demonstrate excellent mechanical properties, but the lack of the ability of self healing, i.e. the ability to remove or neutralise microcracks without (much) intentional human interaction, which is typical for most materials as encountered in nature. Such self-healing behaviour requires the presence of mobile species, atoms or molecules, in an otherwise solid material. Upon the occurrence of damage the mobile species directionally flow towards the damage location and once arrived there restores the contact between the two crack faces and the mechanical integrity. This directional flow may occur during regular use conditions (self healing behaviour) or conditions during which the mobility is temporarily increased (stimulated self healing). In this manuscript a brief overview of the routes and mechanisms which have been used to create self healing behaviour in the principal classes of engineering materials: polymers, metals, ceramics, concrete, asphalt, fibre composites, is presented.

This paper presents the design method and the construction details of a subsonic low-speed wind tunnel, which has been designed to achieve the flow velocity of 35 m/s in the measurement section with expected uniform velocity field at its inlet. To achieve such objectives a very detailed design was performed using a theoretical 1D analysis and computational fluid dynamics simulations. This approach was applied to improve the flow quality along the wind tunnel sections. When the wind tunnel has been launched a direct comparison of the experimentally measured flow field in the test section and numerical simulation results was conducted. Such comparison of the simulation results with the experimental one is presented in this paper. The obtained results confirm that assumed wind tunnel design method was correct, i.e. the pressure drop in the wind tunnel has been predicted very well and drive system is effective and sufficient to accelerate the airflow to required values.

The cyclic modular approach is proposed for mechatronic object design. The approach is based on a new conceptual model of the object and a new algorithm of its design. The model consists of invariant and changeable parts. The parts have a hierarchical structure. The proposed algorithm allows for creating the object from the basis principle to the construction step by step. It makes it possible to design an adequate object in all forms of its representations: structure, schematic diagram, mathematical model and construction. Each of these forms has an invariant part, i.e. the structure of the functioning process of the object. Application of the proposed approach reduces the time needed for the object design.

Opis:
This work examines the reduced-cost design optimization of dual- and multi-band antennas. The primary challenge is independent yet simultaneous control of the antenna responses at two or more frequency bands. In order to handle this task, a feature-based optimization approach is adopted where the design objectives are formulated on the basis of the coordinates of so-called characteristic points (or response features) of the antenna response. Due to only slightly nonlinear dependence of the feature points on antenna geometry parameters, optimization can be attained at a low computational cost. Our approach is demonstrated using two antenna structures with the optimum designs obtained in just a few dozen of EM simulations of the respective structure.

Opis:
Optimization of structural topology, called briefly: topology optimization, is a relatively new branch of structural optimization. Its aim is to create optimal structures, instead of correcting the dimensions or changing the shapes of initial designs. For being able to create the structure, one should have a possibility to handle the members of zero stiffness or admit the material of singular constitutive properties, i.e. void. In the present paper, four fundamental problems of topology optimization are discussed: Michell’s structures, two-material layout problem in light of the relaxation by homogenization theory, optimal shape design and the free material design. Their features are disclosed by presenting results for selected problems concerning the same feasible domain, boundary conditions and applied loading. This discussion provides a short introduction into current topics of topology optimization.

Opis:
The paper presents a novel methodology of building industrial Virtual Reality applications with use of a knowledge-based approach. Virtual Reality is becoming more and more widespread in engineering applications. However, most solutions are immediate and not flexible, especially in maintenance. Traditional way of programming VR applications makes all the knowledge about a product or a process hard-coded, effectively losing access to it from the outside of the programming software. Besides, making new solutions without any methodology whatsoever makes the process longer and less effective. The author proposes to use general rules of available Knowledge Engineering methodologies in order to make the process of building VR applications more effective and to ensure their flexibility and access to stored knowledge, even after an application is deployed. The presented methodology is supported with practical case studies.

This paper deals with the design of radar receive filters jointly optimized with respect to sidelobe energy and sidelobe peaks via Pareto-optimal theory. We prove that this criterion is tantamount to jointly minimizing two quadratic forms, so that the design can be analytically formulated in terms of a multi-objective optimization problem. In order to solve it, we resort to the scalarization technique, which reduces the vectorial problem into a scalar one using a Pareto weight defining the relative importance of the two objective functions. At the analysis stage, we assess the performance of the receive filters in correspondence of different values of the Pareto weight highlighting the performance compromises between the Integrated Sidelobe Level (ISL) and the Peak Sidelobe Level (PSL).

Opis:
An approach to rapid optimization of antennas using the shape-preserving response-prediction (SPRP) technique and coarsediscretization electromagnetic (EM) simulations (as a low-fidelity model) is presented. SPRP allows us to estimate the response of the high-fidelity EM antenna model, e.g., its reflection coefficient versus frequency, using the properly selected set of so-called characteristic points of the low-fidelity model response. The low-fidelity model, corrected by means of SPRP, is subsequently used to predict the optimal design. The design process is cost efficient because most operations are performed on the low-fidelity model. Performance of our technique is demonstrated using a dielectric resonator antenna and two planar wideband antenna examples. In all cases, the optimal design is obtained at a cost corresponding to a few high-fidelity simulations of the antenna under design.

Switch-mode circuits are used as power processors, e.g. DC/DC converters, synchronous rectifiers, high-frequency resonant power amplifiers. Their efficient computer-aided design is a technical problem only partly resolved so far. This paper presents a multi-layer CAD methodology for switch-mode power circuits. It discusses several levels of modeling of switching devices. First rough design verification is feasible using ideal switch models. It gives a satisfactory first-cut design. Then full models and general-purpose tools provide more exact verification of the design. At this exact step the design procedure makes use of interactive improvement followed by automatic optimization of some quality based objective functions. The proposed methodology is shown to be especially useful for high power class-D voltage-switching resonant amplifiers, where the so far used experimental optimization is extremely cost consuming.
