Opis:
The present article attempts to discuss whether a medical conference poster intended for a specific English-speaking discourse community shares the properties of discourse colony (Hoey 1986). The author analyses 12 e-posters, which were displayed during an international neurological conference, presenting findings on epilepsy treatment. First, the author characterises the conference poster, which is followed by a description of discourse community and discourse colony. Next, the analysis of the e-posters is carried out and the results of the analysis are presented. On the basis of these results it might be said that the medical conference poster could be considered a discourse colony as it shares some of its properties.

This paper aims at investigating whether the linguistic strategies and features generally attributed to academic discourse are reflected in the texts of online academic job postings, and if so, to what degree such elements make academic job ads different from their corporate counterparts. This corpus-based study focuses on job advertisements understood as samples of written academic and corporate discourses. The function that academic job postings perform for academic communities may be considered parallel to the role that recruitment ads announcing business-related positions play in corporate communities. This functional homogeneity is reflected in numerous similarities between the textual strategies used in both sub-corpora. The more ‘academic’ character of academic job postings manifests itself primarily through a higher degree of grammatical formality, and limited use of the personal voice and explicit persuasion.

Successful slogans in Italian political discourse – This paper aims to describe the notion of ‘sloganisation’, with special regard to the fortune and circulation of certain slogans in Italian public discourse. An analysis of their forms, contexts of occurrence (political propaganda, advertising, football supporters) and means of diffusion (street talk, electoral manifestos, traditional and new media) shows an increasing desemantisation of this kind of message. Slogans are routinely used by political parties and are widely quoted, regardless of their ideological content, merely in order to create identification or to increase the polemical attitude of their leader.

The article presents an example of ethnic discourse analysis of the press published in Winnipeg (Canada) between 1896 and 1919. The presented research strategy is based on qualitative analysis of English, German, and Polish newspapers. The perspective of discourse analysis offers some possibilities to conduct research on creating the definition of ethnic identity on the pages of ethnic newspapers by the symbolic elite, changes within one ethnic group as well as discourse struggle for social meaning between competing groups. The sociological perspective of discourse analysis focuses particularly on social inequalities and on ideologies which legitimate such inequalities.
W artykule przedstawiono propozycję analizy dyskursu dotyczącego etniczności na łamach prasy wydawanej w Winnipeg (Kanada), w latach 1896–1919. Prezentowana strategia badawcza opiera się na analizie jakościowej gazet angielsko-, niemiecko- i polskojęzycznych. Perspektywa analizy dyskursu sprzyja badaniu tworzenia definicji tożsamości etnicznej przez elity symboliczne na łamach prasy, przemian zachodzących w zbiorowości etnicznej i dyskursywnej walki o znaczenie między rywalizującymi ze sobą frakcjami. Socjologiczna analiza dyskursu zwraca szczególną uwagę na istniejące nierówności społeczne i treści ideologiczne, które legitymizują te nierówności.

This paper has as its starting point Fairclough’s observation that we can consider social life as diverse but interconnected networks of stabilized or institutionalised social activities which function by means of discourse (Fairclough 2003). Discourses include representations of how things are, have been, might, could or should be and all discourses are inherently positioned. By comparing the discourse features from the The Financial Times “Lex” column from the period 1996 to 2006, we will consider what discoursal choices have been employed in order to establish and maintain knowledge in this specialized discourse and consider whether the writer/reader relationship has changed.

This paper reports on the findings of these aspects of my own semi-ethnographic study which relate to the reader-oriented view of didactic discourse and emphasize the constitutive impact of social context (and the relations of power inscribed in it) on the formation of the writer’s self. Following Halliday’s (1978, 1994) approach to “language as a form of social practice” I will argue that power relations are a central force which mediates didactic discourse and profoundly affects the way student writers construct their authorial self.

The article presents modest attempts of women joining the discourse pertaining to national matters. Their significant but still underestimated contribution to the above-mentioned discourse was described on the basis of didactic and literary activity of Dragolja Jarnevic, Marija Jambrisak and Jagoda Truhelka. As the community important for the literature thriving, those creative teachers established the very first Croatian women's magazine titled 'Domace ognijste'. The magazines first issues were thoroughly analyzed with a special attention to national matters that were included in them. Those female writers and teachers mentioned in the text - although they were not able to get themselves out of the dominant male paradigm at the time - they undoubtedly prepared a sound foundation/ ground for more courageous gestures of other creative women of the future.

Selected aspects of discourse ontology: Discourse and communication. Since discourse linguistics has been established, one of the leading principles of this new area of research is a congruence between discourse and communication which is regarded to as an opinio communis. A communicative treatment of the discourse unavoidably presumes an overt intentionality in discourse production and reception. However, real discourses are often linguistic manifestations of non-communicative or at least restricted-communicative mental acts. The authors’ claim is that the production of non-communicative and/or non-intentional discourses belongs to discourse practices which are by no means random phenomena. Such discourses are from the ontological perspective kernel areas of the symbolisation of human reflexions. The basic hypothesis does not, thus, recognise communication as a universal ontological base of the discourse analyses.

Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) is a theory of interdiscursive performance taking a multi-perspective approach to account for professional practice, demystify the interdiscursive nature of professional genres, account for professional identities, understand professional communication as interdiscursive performance, and provide evidence-based pedagogical insights. The present paper capitalizes upon CGA to analyze the genre of Principal’s Remarks, which originate from a speech delivered by the school principal on the anniversary and annual speech day of a school to report the development of the school. A total of 12 Principal’s Remarks of an aided Christian secondary school in Hong Kong, China released in 12 consecutive years were incorporated into the corpus for analysis. The genre was analyzed at four levels, which conceptualize discourse as text, genre, professional practice, and social practice respectively. The study exemplifies how CGA can be capitalized upon to analyze an unfamiliar genre in a multi‑perspective fashion.

The paper attempts to present the description of nineteenth-century Slavistic discourse. Using findings of Hayden White, the article outlines how the Slavs were presented in and by discourse. In the description of the Slavic culture, West Europe seemed to be unable to actually see the huge and essential internal linguistic, ethnic, national, political, religious and finally cultural diversity. Initially, the Slavs were perceived as the Other, but gradually the concept of the Slavic culture as an imaginary notion, which was an emancipated construct created in Western consciousness, based on incomplete and often false assumptions, was changing. Particular emphasis has been placed on the analysis of Slavistic discourse in 3 perspectives: culture – non-culture, center – periphery and diachrony – synchrony. The paper discusses Herder’s concepts (concerning language and nation) which became central for discussions relating to the Slavic culture. Herder predicted the Slavic nations would one day be the real power in Europe. Many of his ideas, which directly influenced Slavic activists and writers, determined the field of strategies and projects in constructing cultural models. This is the reason why Herder became an intellectual godfather of the Slavic national revival. Although, Herder's concepts meant the significant change, Europe still cultivated many stereotypes and myths, which distorted the real picture of the Slavs.

The present article addresses the subject of technical specialist text, its discursive features and, what follows, its potential within the complex context of communication and functionality. What shall be analysed herein is a specific genre of the text, i.e. product information, along with its distinctive properties treated as a tool for exerting influence. The analysis shall be conducted while taking into account both inter- and intra-industry specialist communication. Consideration shall be given to the intertextual sphere, the functions and conventional structure of the text, its interactive roles and formulative level, i.e. the linguistic means and structures through which the speech acts inherent in the genre and necessary in the communication process are performed.

Gwałtowne zmiany społeczne i polityczne – rewolucje, ruchy masowe, procesy demokratyzacji – były flagowymi tematami socjologii historycznej w jej klasycznej postaci. Choć jej czołowi przedstawiciele – jak Charles Tilly czy Theda Skocpol – nie byli ślepi na zmiany w obrębie nauk humanistycznych i społecznych, tylko w niewielkim stopniu w swych późnych pracach uwzględnili reperkusje zwrotu kulturowego czy lingwistycznego dla swojej dyscypliny. Jednocześnie heterodoksyjne tradycje badawcze zorientowane na różnie pojęty dyskurs zwróciły się ku badaniom historycznym. Artykuł jest próbą przemyślenia podstawowych pytań stawianych przez klasyczną socjologię historyczną Tilly’ego w świetle zorientowanej na dyskurs korekty epistemologicznej, i przede wszystkim ontologicznej, w naukach społecznych. Tekst łączy cechy artykułu przeglądowego i przyczynku teoretycznego. Prezentuje dorobek rozproszonych, choć mających w sobie niemało do powiedzenia dyscyplin badawczych i proponuje możliwości ich wzajemnej integracji. Jest także próbą przemyślenia i rekonstrukcji zorientowanej na dyskurs socjologii historycznej.
Turbulent social changes such as revolutions, mass movements or processes of democratization were major topics for the classical historical sociology. Its leading proponents such as Charles Tilly or Theda Skocpol were generally receptive towards paradigmatic shifts in social sciences and the humanities. However, their receptions of linguistic and cultural turn were limited if not flawed. This article attempts to rethink classical research questions of Tilly’s historical sociology from the perspective of discourse-oriented epistemological and ontological shift. The paper presents relevant insights from various research disciplines concerning discourse theory and historical discourse analysis and offers a way of their cross-fertilization. It is also an attempt to reconstruct and rearticulate historical sociology as a discourse oriented theoretical and methodological perspective.

The work is an attempt to show how the concept of fuoco (fire) is conceptualized in Italian persuasive discourse regarding the health and beauty of women. The conducted research (mainly based on the notion of metaphor by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson) reveals a number of relationships among the analysed concept and many others – related to both the physical and mental sphere of a modern woman. The valuation of fire is also noteworthy, as the fire functions in the linguistic system as a neutral concept, while in the corpus subjected to analysis, depending on the context, it gains positive or negative characteristics.

In theoretical model of discursive hegemony by Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau political antagonism is the competition between different ways of representing the world in public discourse. In this model shared political projects allowing domination over larger fragments of discourse are understood as important factors for the new social order emergence. Social and political changes are interpreted with the reference to the category of “dislocation”. One can speak of dislocation when the events that are difficult to describe in the framework of the dominant system of meanings unfold. They disrupt the existing symbolic order and lead to the changes in the hierarchy of hegemonic projects. It is held that the crash of the airplane carrying the Polish President and nearly a hundred state officials to Smolensk, where Katyn victims’ commemoration ceremony was to take place in 2010, referred to as Smolensk catastrophe, have caused the experience of crisis and can be interpreted as the dislocation. In the article the new symbolic order emergence in the aftermath of the catastrophe is studied by discourse analytical tools. The research material has been taken from “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita”, the leading Polish daily quality newspapers. The article is aimed at evaluating whether the Mouffe and Laclau theoretical model is useful in analyzing the mechanisms of the new discursive counter-hegemony emergence.
Według koncepcji hegemonii dyskursywnej Chantal Mouffe i Ernesta Laclau walka polityczna polega na przeciwstawianiu w publicznym dyskursie różnych sposobów opisu świata. W tym ujęciu wspólne projekty polityczne umożliwiające opanowanie większych fragmentów dyskursu pojmowane są jako ważne czynniki wyłaniania się nowego porządku społecznego. Zmiany społeczne i polityczne są wyjaśniane z wykorzystaniem pojęcia dyslokacji, która pojawia się wtedy, gdy zachodzą zdarzenia trudne do opisania w ramach dominującego systemu znaczeń. Katastrofa prezydenckiego samolotu w Smoleńsku w 2010 roku może być interpretowana jako taka dyslokacja. W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę analizy, jak wyłania się nowy łady symboliczny. Podstawą analizy są artykuły opublikowane krótko po katastrofie w „Gazecie Wyborczej” i „Rzeczpospolitej”. Celem tekstu jest próba oceny przydatności koncepcji Mouffe i Laclau do interpretacji mechanizmów dynamicznego wyłaniania się nowej dyskursywnej kontrhegemonii.
