Opis:
Keats and Leopardi: Biographical coincidences, ideals and affinities of inspiration – In the history of poetry, the English John Keats and the Italian Giacomo Leopardi, in their personal life, poetry, and letters are phenomenal in a special way. Both poets have always been regarded as key figures in the European Romantic Movement and have steadily grown in stature despite all changes of fashion. They never met, never were in Rome together, wrote in two quite different languages and their poetry is different in style, form and in almost every other way. Yet, despite the distance and the cultures that separated them, surprisingly, the two poets had certain biographical experiences in common; both early understood the intimations of their mortality and had the premonition of death, and many of their poems have the same evocative power, not to mention the many fascinating correspondences and resemblances both in ideals and inspiration.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the identity strategies of people who experienced multiple migrations in their childhood. They are sometimes, especially in the USA, referred to as Third Culture Kids (TCK). The author claims that serial migration is connected with some challenges as well as with unique opportunities. The former encompass sense of temporariness, feeling uprooted, difficulties with building deep and stable relationships and constructing cohesive identity. Obviously not every TCK experiences this challenges, and some TCKs cope very well with them, but these are problems mentioned most often by participants of this research. On the other hand however such lifestyle enables young migrants to gain cultural and linguistic competences. In this paper identity dilemmas and strategies in three dimensions are highlighted: agency and control over one’s life, cohesion and continuity and social relations. The paper is based on 53 biographical interviews with adult TCKs of different nationalities.

Opis:
If one were to identify a single area in contemporary literary practices, where the “borderline poetics” comes most powerfully to the fore, one would necessarily need to point to the life-writing domain. Undoubtedly, in recent years, life-writing genres have not only claimed their centrality in the academic discourse, but also managed to attract wide readership. Most importantly, however, they manifest the borderline characteristics (a free interplay of fact and fiction and the genre-bending features in particular) in a manner and to an extent that can hardly be matched by any other type of contemporary literary production. The present paper discusses a text which powerfully manifests the borderline poetics. Alfred and Emily by Doris Lessing, a 2008 narrative about the parents of the Nobel Laureate set on the outskirts of the falling British Empire, on the one hand incorporates and accommodates the two seemingly opposite orders, namely fictional and factual; on the other it resists being categorised as belonging to only one, clearly defined genre (e.g. autobiography or biography). The aim of this paper is not to decide upon the story’s unequivocal generic affiliation, but rather to observe the dynamics between factual and fictional realms – the dynamics which lies at the very heart of any life-writing practice.

Opis:
Much as the book has been in evidence among numerous critics, the present essay focuses exclusively on Yeats’s famous Per Amica Silentia Lunae (1918), seeking to investigate the impulses of faith and irony that underpin its construction. The book is discussed on four levels: as a prose poem, a treatise on poetry, an account of Yeats’s infatuation with Iseult Gonne and finally, as an elaboration of the theory of culture that Yeats pondered in his earlier critical and theoretical work. The readings overlap, as Yeats is shown to conceive of the life of the poet as a constant quest for self-reinvention that never gives up on the hope of its completion, at the same time remaining powerfully sceptical of the means to achieve that completion.
