Opis:
The term “re-flooding window” was recently proposed as a time-interval connected with the transgressive stage of present day peri-reefal development. In the analysis presented here, a fossil record of a re-flooding window has been recognized. Nine Late Silurian carbonate sections exposed on the banks of the Dnister River in Podolia (Ukraine) have been correlated base on bed-by-bed microfacies analysis and spectral gamma ray (SGR) measurements. Correlated were sections representing settings ranging from the inner part of a shallow-water carbonate platform to its slope, through an organic buildup. The reconstructed depositional scenario has been divided into six development stages, with the first three representing a regressive interval and the latter three a transgressive interval of the basin’s history. The re-flooding window has been identified at the beginning of a transgressive part of the succession. Surprisingly, it is characterized by an extremely fast growth of a shallow, tide-dominated platform and by deposition of calciturbiditic layers in a more basinal area. The interpreted succession is a small-scale model illustrating the reaction of carbonate depositional sub-environments to sea level changes and determining the facies position of the stromatoporoid buildups within the facies pattern on a Silurian shelf. The use of SGR analyses in shallow water, partly high-energy, carbonate facies, both for correlation purposes and for identifying depositional systems, is a relatively new method, and thus can serve as a reference for other studies of similar facies assortment.

Opis:
Tsunami deposits are currently a subject of intensive studies. Tsunamis must have occurred in the geological past in the same frequency as nowadays, yet their identified depositional record is surprisingly scarce. Here we describe a hitherto unrecognized example of probable palaeotsunamites. The Upper Silurian (Pridoli) carbonate succession of Podolia (southwestern Ukraine) contains variously developed event beds forming intercalations within peritidal deposits (shallow water limestones, nodular marls and dolomites). The event beds are represented by stromatoporoid and fine-grained bioclastic limestones, in some places accompanied by flat-pebble conglomerates. The interval with event beds can be traced along the Zbruch River in separate outcrops over a distance of more than 20 km along a transect oblique to the palaeoshoreline. The stromatoporoid beds have erosional bottom surfaces and are composed of overturned and often fragmented massive skeletons. The material has been transported landward from their offshore habitats and deposited in lagoonal settings. The flat-pebble conglomerates are composed of sub-angular micritic clasts that are lithologically identical to the sediments forming the underlying beds. Large-scale landward transport of the biogenic material has to be attributed to phenomena with very high energy levels, such as tropical hurricanes or tsunamis. This paper presents a tsunamigenic interpretation. Morphometric features of redeposited stromatoporoids point to a calm original growth environment at depths well below storm wave base. Tsunami waves are the most probable factor that could cause their redeposition from such a setting. The vastness of the area covered by parabiostromal stromatoporoid beds resembles the distribution of modern tsunami deposits in offshore settings. The stromatoporoid beds with unsorted stromatoporoids of various dimensions evenly distributed throughout the thickness of the beds and with clast-supported textures most probably represent deposition by traction. In some sections, the stromatoporoids are restricted to the lowermost parts of the beds, which pass upwards into bioclastic limestones. In this case, the finer material was deposited from suspension. The coexistence of stromatoporoid beds and flat-pebble conglomerates also allows presenting a tsunami interpretation of the latter. The propagating tsunami waves, led to erosion of partly lithified thin-layered mudstones, their fragmentation into flat clasts and redeposition as flat-pebble conglomerates.

Opis:
The paper summarises the effects of recent studies carried out by a team from the Department of Historical and Regional Geology of the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw on the upper Silurian of Podolia (western part of Ukraine). The sedimentary history of the Silurian succession of Podolia is characterised by its cyclic pattern, with shallowing-upward cyclothems. In the traditional interpretation, the occurrence of stromatoporoid beds within each cyclothem marks the deepest (or most open-marine) sedimentary environment within the cycle. According to the results of recent studies, their occurrence is connected rather with a relatively shallow-water environment and with high energy phenomena. A substantial reinterpretation of the main sedimentary processes governing the deposition and facies distribution on the shelf is presented. Particularly, there are recognised and described high-energy sedimentary events repeatedly punctuating the generally calm sedimentation that prevailed in the lagoonal settings, some of which are interpreted as tsunami induced. Further perspectives for studies on the Silurian successions of Podolia are also discussed. The main problem is the precise correlation of particular sections that are scattered over vast distances and developed in similar facies associations.

A specimen of a flea beetle collected by plant sweeping from an experimental plot of oregano in Warsaw showed characteristics of the invasive species Luperomorpha xanthodera. This beetle, originating from Far East, appeared in Europe at the beginning of this century and seems to extend its range continuously. So far, it has been noted from England, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary but not from Poland. Being polyphagous, adult flea beetles of this species may appear in numbers on flowers of various ornamental plants causing considerable damage.

The paper develops the automatic methods of segmentation of the blood vessel area in the images of the multi-slice computed tomography, allowing to separate the lumen from the atherosclerotic plaque areas. The solution is based on the application of different implementations of thresholding, including between class variance in a bimodal mode, Gaussian mixture modeling, clustering technique, polynomial and multilayer perceptron approximations. These methods are compared with many examples of arteries of different percentage of the plaque occupancy in the iliac and femoral arteries. The numerical results of segmentation have been verified by the medical experts and prove its usefulness in medical practice. The presented system can find application in an automatic evaluation of the atherosclerosis progression/regression of patients on the basis of sequence of Computed Tomography slice images.

The study presents fifteen oxygen-bearing secondary minerals of bismuth from the north-eastern part of the Variscan Karkonosze granitoid pluton in the northern zone of the Bohemian massif. The minerals were investigated by optical, electron microprobe, classic chemical, XRD, IR absorption and fluid inclusion methods. The late, very low temperature epithermal solutions most probably caused formation of sillénite, kusachiite, bismoclite, bismutite, beyerite, kettnerite, pucherite, schumacherite, namibite and eulytite. Solutions dominated by supergene (meteoric) waters were the parents for bismite, russellite, koechlinite, ximengite and walpurgite. The paper also contains information on early research on the investigated minerals.

Here we present one of the more complex models for studying the stability of driving an electric car with electromechanical differential systems. The purpose of simulation is to choose a structure of the control system for a velocity control on driven wheels (an algorithm of a differential) most appropriate for the driver. This type of goal is particularly important in the case of a disabled driver sitting in a wheelchair. The modeling takes into account both the mechanical and electric structure of the vehicle, and finally the human element - a simple model of human impact on the steer by a wire system. Modeling and simulation have used MBS package (SimMechanics). The results of the simulation have showed the best algorithms of an electromechanical differential for the velocity control of rear drive wheels: with setting a velocity difference or with an average velocity controller in the point A of the centre of a car front axle.

This paper presents control method for multiple two-wheeled mobile robots moving in formation. Trajectory tracking algorithm from [7] is extended by collision avoidance, and is applied to the different type of formation task: each robot in the formation mimics motion of the virtual leader with a certain displacement. Each robot avoids collisions with other robots and circular shaped, static obstacles existing in the environment. Artificial potential functions are used to generate repulsive component of the control. Stability analysis of the closed-loop system is based on Lyapunov-like function. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by simulation results.

The paper presents simulation research results of electric car motion processes with special functionality and construction facilitating its use by the disabled. The model of the structure: motor car – human being – environment has been used in the research. Special attention has been paid to the issue of the, so called, driveability of the car driven by a driver with a lower limb disability who is performing this activity from the wheelchair and not the driver seat. The driveability of the car has been assessed based on the technical stability analyses for the conditions of the ”moose test” manoeuvre. The research results have been used in the process of virtual pre-prototyping finalized with the construction of a non-commercial pre-prototype of a car created within the framework of ECO Mobility project. Simulation model of a motor car mechanical systems has been constructed in MBS technology. For description of the tyred wheel, TNO Delft Tyre model has been used. In the model of a control system, the description of programmable systems of the rear wheel drive electronic differential has been included. The model of a driver and the conditions for conducting the “moose test” manoeuvre have been presented.

The results of the present work will be used in the analysis of a physical motion model in a laboratory stand reflecting a railway system of the stand. The paper discusses the first stage of research in the process of virtual pre-prototyping which is to be finalized with the construction of a non-commercial vehicle prototype. In the construction of the simulation model, particular attention has been paid to three issues. First of all, a correct description of design features connected with the lack of so called centring mechanism – and not profiled tyred wheels independently embedded in the axes of the set. Secondly, a proper description of a turning mechanism with the use of a leading rollers system alongside the rail edge. Thirdly, the use of linear motor for the vehicle drive. The simulation model has been developed within MBS environment. For the description of tyred wheels, the library of TNO Delft Tyre has been used. Vehicle motion stability has been tested on the straight and curved track sections. The research has been financed within the framework of ECO mobility project.

The paper presents the issue of modelling the system of the PRT vehicle – track. The PRT – Personal Rapid Transit concept is defined as an innovative transport system composed of small vehicles (3–5 persons) moving on the light infrastructure situated at a height of above 5 meters above the ground. This is a system that combines the features of individual and public transport. An important feature of this system is the implementation of the transport approach known as the ‘point to point’ rule that is to say between the initial and the final stop the vehicle does not stop at the intermediate stops. The vehicle has no driver. Routing choice and collision avoidance are performed through a complex computer system.

Opis:
In this paper the trajectory tracking control algorithm with obstacle avoidance capability is presented. As a robot gets into a neighborhood of the obstacle, the collision avoidance behavior is turned on. It is implemented using the artificial potential function (APF) that increases to infinity as the robot approaches a boundary of the obstacle. This feature guarantees collision avoidance. As avoidance behavior is active only in the neighborhood of the obstacle it does not affect the motion when there is no risk of the collision. Authors show that trajectory of the robot converges to desired one when a robot is out of the APF area. Due to a local characteristic of the APF, the implementation of the algorithm of the robot that uses only on-board sensors is possible. The stability proof is presented for both a near obstacle and obstacle-free areas. Effectiveness of the algorithm is illustrated with experiments on a real robot in an environment with static circle-shaped obstacles.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the development of knowledge about the hot bending of curved architectural glass produced by the slumping process and the challenges as well as the limitations thereof. Due to the complexity of the process, many factors influence the final quality of the glass and the main objective was to better understand the procedure itself in order to improve the control and quality of the slumping process. As a result of the growing interest in this type of glass for architectural applications, the glass processing market is increasingly investing in the required technology. For the moment, this growing niche does not have a large number of direct explanations of the glass behaviour in the furnace in the available literature, which in turn encourages cooperation between the scientific community and manufacturers. This paper presents the conducted experiments that have led to a better understanding of the furnace's work and the impact of specific factors on its operation. Based on the 3D numerical model, a large sample of glass was produced, which was then scanned with a 3D laser using a method developed for the experiment. The results suggested that a more accurate test with usage of a full-size furnace is required. Based on this, the experiment was carried out using a large number of glass samples of different thicknesses. The results of the experiment helped to better understand and demonstrate the need for further research of this technology in order to optimize the quality of the process.

Opis:
Mineralogical studies of the Karkonosze granite (ca. 322–312 Ma) and its surroundings in West Sudetes (SW Poland) have provided data on Nb-Ta-REE minerals from pegmatites in the NE part of the pluton and several new finds of Ag minerals and 15 oxygenic Bi phases, hitherto not reported from the massif. The Karkonosze pegmatites are enriched in HREE as fergusonite-(Y) or xenotime-(Y) appear in almost every studied pegmatite, together with a subordinate assemblage of the aeschynite, euxenite or columbite group. The abundance of LREE minerals such as allanite-(Ce) and the monazite group, correlates inversely with the Nb-Ta-Ti minerals, whilst an early generation of monazite-(Ce) revealed an exceptionally high amount of Nd (up to 22 wt.% of Nd2O3). The physical and chemical conditions during the magmatic and post-magmatic processes were reconstructed and the effects of contact metamorphism in amphibolites from hornfelsed zones examined. Changes in solution composition and concentration at the early magmatic stage (825–920ºC), pegmatitic stage overlapping with hydrothermal (560°C which ended at 160–90°C) and clearly hydrothermal stage (400 to 110°C) were studied in detail by means of melt and fluid inclusions in quartz. Furthermore, post-magmatic fluids, including some enriched in Li and B, were identified in rock-forming quartz from the whole pluton. In turn, study of the amphibolites indicates that the pair cummingtonite + anorthite or the presence of Ca-rich plagioclase with actinolite seem to be reliable mineral proxies of the thermal impact of the granitoid body on amphibolites in its envelope. The inferred conditions of the contact processes (450–550°C, 2.5–4.8 kbar) point to an elevated geothermal gradient (ca. 32–45°C/km) probably reflecting the heat flow induced by the Karkonosze intrusion. Moreover, despite the textural and mineral changes imposed by regional and contact metamorphism, the amphibolites have their pre-metamorphic (magmatic) geochemical features undisturbed.

Opis:
We propose a class of m-crane control systems that generalizes two- and three-dimensional crane systems. We prove that each representant of the described class is feedback equivalent to the second order chained form with drift. In consequence, we prove that it is differentially flat. Then we investigate its control properties and derive a control law for tracking control problem.
