Opis:
The bone belongs to the dynamic tissues and its structure in domestic cows is still not completely understood in correlation to the impact of different food components. The aim of our work was a histomorphometrical and immunohistochemical research on bone morphology and factors influencing it in healthy dairy cows fed with self-produced grain and with rapeseed cakes. The bone of self-produced grain-fed cows demonstrated statistically significant difference in the number of osteocytes from the bone of rapeseed cakes-fed cows. The rapeseed cakes-fed cows didn't show any bone cell positive for BMP2/4, while FGFR1 increased significantly in their supportive tissues. The number of bFGF- and apoptosis-containing structures varied in cows of both groups. MMP2 expression showed statistically significant difference between both animals' groups with domination in bone of cows fed with self-produced grain. Defensin-, osteopontin- and osteocalcin-contain- ing cells showed tendency to increase in bone of cows on rapeseed cakes diet. Conclusions. The rapeseed-fed cow's long bones demonstrate significant decrease of osteocytes per mm2 and selective increase of FGFR1, suggesting the (compensatory) growth stimulation in supportive tissue. The statistically significant selective absence of MMP2 with a slight tendency of increase in osteopontin and osteocalcin in rapeseed-fed cow's long bones indicates the persistence of seemingly still compensated qualitative changes in bone (beginning of disturbances in mineralization, metabolism etc.) proved also by a slight increase of the bone antimicrobial peptide.

The objective of the study was to determine feeding preferences of the khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium Everts) towards some plant products. The material for the investigations was composed of grain of four barley varieties: Brenda, Krona, Maresi, Rasbet; barley malt, and nutlets of three varieties of buckwheat: Hruszowska, Emka and Kora. The reference material comprised wheat grain of the commercial variety Almari. The results showed that the development of T. granarium larvae on barley grain and malt took longer than on wheat grain. The authors observed that buckwheat nutlets were comparable to barley kernels as a food for the development of the pest. The pest showed more feeding preferences to buckwheat products, grits and meal to barley grain.
Celem prowadzonych badań było określenie preferencji pokarmowych skórka zbożowego (Trogoderma granarium Everts) w stosunku do wybranych produktów roślinnych. Materiałem badań było: ziarno jęczmienia czterech odmian - Brenda, Krona, Maresi, Rasbet; słód jęczmienny oraz orzeszki gryki trzech odmian - Hruszowska, Emka i Kora. Materiał porównawczy stanowiło ziarno pszenicy handlowej odmiany Almari. Wyniki uzyskanych badań wykazały, że rozwój larw T. granarium na ziarnie jęczmienia i słodzie był dłuższy niż na ziarnie pszenicy. Stwierdzono również, że orzeszki gryki są porównywalnym z ziarnem jęczmienia pokarmem umożliwiającym rozwój tego szkodnika. Przetwory z gryki, kasza i mąka mogą być preferowanym przez szkodnika pokarmem w większym stopniu niż ziarno jęczmienia.

Opis:
Simulation software dedicated for design of casting processes is usually tested and calibrated by comparisons of shrinkage defects distribution predicted by the modelling with that observed in real castings produced in a given foundry. However, a large amount of expertise obtained from different foundries, including especially made experiments, is available from literature, in the form of recommendations for design of the rigging systems. This kind of information can be also used for assessment of the simulation predictions. In the present work two parameters used in the design of feeding systems are considered: feeding ranges in horizontal and vertical plates as well as efficiency (yield) of feeders of various shapes. The simulation tests were conducted using especially designed steel and aluminium castings with risers and a commercial FDM based software. It was found that the simulations cannot predict appearance of shrinkage porosity in horizontal and vertical plates of even cross-sections which would mean, that the feeding ranges are practically unlimited. The yield of all types of feeders obtained from the simulations appeared to be much higher than that reported in the literature. It can be concluded that the feeding flow modelling included in the tested software does not reflect phenomena responsible for the feeding processes in real castings properly. Further tests, with different types of software and more fundamental studies on the feeding process modelling would be desirable.

Surface waxes from wax-covered triticale plants (RAH 122) were sprayed on plants of the waxless genotype RAH 366 or the surface waxes were used to make artificial diet preparations. The results were significant increases in the mortality of apterous adults of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) at all concentrations tested in comparison with those aphids which fed on the control plants or aphids which were reared on the diets. In the choice tests, most aphids settled on plants without surface waxes or on diet preparations which did not have surface waxes (the controls). When the concentration of the surface waxes was increased on one of the plants or surface waxes were increased in the diet preparation, the number of wandering aphids increased. Those aphids which did not wander were mainly on the waxless control plants or on the waxless diet preparations. Aphids did settle on those plants or on the diet preparations which had 100 and 1,000 μg · g–1 of surface wax. The aphids rarely settled on the diet preparations containing 10,000 μg ∙ g–1 of surface waxes. From these observations it appears that surface waxes can act as a feeding deterrent. Since aphids on plants with surface waxes, or aphids which settled on diet preparations with surface waxes, started to die earlier than aphids fed only the control plants or the control diet preparations, it is possible that the surface waxes had a toxic effect that led to early mortality. Thus, it can be said that the surface waxes caused feeding deterrence and had a toxic effect on the aphids.

Opis:
A new Computer-Aided Design approach is introduced for design of steel castings taking into account the feeding ability in sand moulds. This approach uses the geometrical modeling by a CAD-program, in which the modul “Castdesigner” is implemented, which includes the feeding models of steel castings. Furthermore, the feeding ability is guaranteed immediately during the design by an interactive geometry change of the casting cross section, so that a directional feeding of the solidifying casting from the installed risers is assured.

Opis:
The paper presents relationships between the degree of structure fineness and feeding quality of the Al – 20 wt.% Zn (Al-20 Zn) alloy cast into a mould made from sand containing silica quartz as a matrix and bentonite as a binder, and its damping coefficient of the ultrasound wave at frequency of 1 MHz. The structure of the examined alloy was grain refined by the addition of the refining Al-3 wt.% Ti – 0.15 wt.%C (TiCAl) master alloy. The macrostructure analysis of the initial alloy without the addition of Ti and the alloy doped with 50-100 ppm Ti as well as results of damping experiments showed that the structure of the modified alloy is significantly refined. At the same time, its damping coefficient decreases by about 20-25%; however, it still belongs to the so called high-damping alloys. Additionally, it was found that despite of using high purity metals Al and Zn (minimum 99,99% purity), differences in the damping coefficient for samples cut from upper and bottom parts of the vertically cast rolls were observed. These differences are connected with the insufficient feeding process leading to shrinkage porosity as well as gases present in metal charges which are responsible for bubbles of gas-porosity.

In the leaves of four apple cultivars with a different degree of susceptibility to the apple rust mite - Aculus schlechtendali (Nal.) the content of some plant components was estimated. It has been found that a long-term feeding of the apple rust mite induces changes in the content of reducing sugars. These changes were significantly varying depending on the apple cultivar.
W liściach czterech odmian jabłoni nie zasiedlonych przez pordzewiacza jabłoniowego stwierdzono zróżnicowaną zawartość cukrów redukujących, zbliżoną zawartość fenoli ogólnych i białek rozpuszczalnych. Najwięcej cukrów i fenoli stwierdzono u odmiany Pionier, podatnej na szpeciela. Wskutek długotrwałego żerowania pordzewiacza jabłoniowego nastąpiło istotne obniżenie zawartości cukrów u odmian licznie zasiedlonych przez szpeciela (Pionier, Romus). Ponadto odmiany te reagowały na jego żerowanie zwiększeniem stosunku fenoli do cukrów. Żerowanie szpeciela nie miało istotnego wpływu na zawartość białek w liściach jabłoni.

The obtained results showed that grain aphid (Sitobion avenae Fabr.) feeding caused an increase of the total protein content and a decrease of soluble protein level in the ears of both studied winter triticale cultivars (i.e. susceptible cultivar Grado and relatively resistant- Lasko). Moreover, the content of amino acids in soluble protein increased in Grado plants infested with the aphid, and reduced - in Lasko.
Celem podjętych badań było określenie wpływu żerowania mszycy zbożowej na zawartość i skład aminokwasowy białka rozpuszczalnego wyizolowanego z kłosów dwóch odmian pszenżyta ozimego o zróżnicowanym stopniu odporności na tego szkodnika. W oparciu o uzyskane rezultaty stwierdzono, że żerowanie bezskrzydłych samic S. avenae wywołuje wzrost zawartości zarówno białka ogólnego jak i rozpuszczalnego w podatnej odmianie Grado. Natomiast w zasiedlonych przez mszyce roślinach względnie odpornej odmiany Lasko wzrastało stężenie białka ogólnego przy równoczesnym spadku poziomu białka rozpuszczalnego. Analiza składu aminokwasowego białka rozpuszczalnego wykazała, że pod wpływem żerowania S. avenae w pszenżycie Grado wzrasta zawartość aminokwasów egzogennych i endogennych, a w odmianie Lasko - obniża się. Otrzymane rezultaty dowiodły ponadto, że zmiany w zawartości i składzie aminokwasowym analizowanych frakcji białka uzależnione są w dużej mierze od czasu żerowania szkodnika.

The consequences of pearling and cutting (barley Hordeum vulgare L.), and roasting and cutting (buckwheat Fagopyrum esculentum Möench) on the development and food consumption of the confused flour beetle Tribolium confusum Duv. were studied. The factors affecting the increase in the T. confusum population, and food consumption effectiveness (the proportion of wasted food in the whole amount of the used product) were different in barley and buckwheat. The best barley product for T. confusum was the flour. The population number, the proportion of imagines, and the effectiveness of food consumption were relatively high for cut groats, compared to whole barley. The toughness of the whole groats was most likely the cause of the lowest suitability of this product for the confused flour beetle. Neither the size of the cut groats nor the pearling of barley had any effect on T. confusum development and food consumption effectiveness. The best buckwheat product for T. confusum was the whole hulled non-processed groats. In these groats, the total population number, the proportion of imagines, and the effectiveness of food consumption were relatively high compared to cut groats. The total population number was the lowest in the steamed groats. The decrease in nutrients and B vitamins due to the removal of the embryo and aleurone layer during the breaking process of buckwheat, was possibly the main factor affecting T. confusum development and food consumption in buckwheat.

The influence of ozone injection mode on the effectiveness of nitrogen monoxide oxidation to nitrogen dioxide by ozone in a flow reactor was investigated experimentally in laboratory apparatus. Nitrogen monoxide was diluted to the mole fraction 100 ppm in air which served as the carrier gas flowing through the tube of the diameter D = 60 mm into which ozone was injected. The effects of a number of ozone injecting nozzles and their configuration on the effectiveness of NO oxidation were examined. In the closest vicinity from the injection site the counter-current injection mode appeared to be superior to the co-current injection mode, but in areas located further from the injection site both injection systems were almost equally effective.
