This article examines the origins and the contents of the quarterly Wieści (News) published bwteen 1977 and 1983 by the Brussels-Washington section of the party headed by Hanna Chorążyna, Stanisław Bańczyk and Józef Rzemieniewski. The editors committed themselves to keeping a healthy distance from internal party rivalries and focusing instead on the developments in rural Poland. Their plan panned out as the periodical became a reputable source of information about issues like the retirement pension for farmers, the rise of the Farmers’ Self-Defence committees in 1978 - a forerunner of the Rural Solidarity Movement of 1980 - and the history of the Polish agrarian parties.

A comparison of the life and poetry of Ovid and of Philippus Callimachus (Filippo Buonaccorsi, 1437-1496) during their exile from Italy. Although there are some undeniable analogies between their fates on the whole, Callimachus' state of mind in exile, his relations with his new neighbours and the tone of his poetry are all quite different than Ovid's. All this is due especially to the fact that he found his new love and a new, quite well-educated audience in Poland.

Notes on Foscolo and the English language (1816–1827) – Foscolo never managed to master his host country’s language during his years of exile in London (1816–1827). The vast production of his English years consists almost entirely of works intended to be translated by other people and thus to be considered as provisional drafts. In this paper, the relationship between Foscolo and the English language is analysed and discussed, focusing in particular on his interactions with his translators and on his linguistic vision.

Family roles clearly affected the information people shared in their correspondence: things parents would not tell children, language children would not use with parents, and so on. Likewise, in cases of dictatorship or wartime, situations where the correspondents anticipated censorship, letter writers shaped their texts with this in mind. The Hine Collection illuminates how individual, generational, gender, and ethnic concerns coalesced and sometimes collided. Through the writings of the Hasterlik family, a bourgeois Viennese family of Jewish roots, whose members fled to various locations around the time of the Anschluss, it explores self-censorship based on internal as well as external motives.

Opis:
This paper departs from the assumption that no other drama disposes of such a broad, international, and symbolically charged interpretation history as Nathan the Wise (1779). While the play was censored in Nazi Germany, European (and often Jewish) authors, who had sought refuge in the United States, brought Nathan along to perpetuate Lessing’s plea for religious tolerance. In this transatlantic adaptation process, however, the authors chose to adjust the original text to the cultural as well as societal and political conditions both in their old and new homeland(s). Could Nathan stand up to these new challenges?

This article presents a panorama of the press of the peasant movement in exile, ie. the peasant parties outside Poland, in 1945–1989. The author was able to identify 43 items (titles), but only a few of them were professionally edited periodicals, addressed to a wider audience. Most were makeshift ventures, printed on low quality paper, aimed at an inner circle of the peasant party organization. Until the mid-seventies their interest was focused on issues important to the expatriate community and the struggle against communism worldwide. Later the focus shifted to events in Poland, conditions of life in the country and the rural population, and the activities of the anti-communist opposition.

Opis:
The reflection proposed in this article starts from the realities of the border and the sea, and from the problematic meaning they assumed in the frame of the city of Fiume (Rijeka) in the early twentieth century. The main goal is to explore how in the work of Enrico Morovich, an Italian writer coming from Fiume who had to personally and tragically experience war and exile, the border and the sea act as devices of literary creation, providing models of humorous reversal (the border) and symmetrical thinking (the sea). The analysis will focus in particular on the following works by Morovich: Cronache vicine e lontane (1981), La nostalgia del mare (1981), Un italiano di Fiume (1994).

The relocation of thousands of Polish refugees in East Africa in 1942 required a considerable effort to set up institutions capable of providing social and political care upon their arrival from Iran. Th e aim of this article is to give some insights into the tremendous task performed by the Polish officials to establish an effective administration in various British territories in Africa. Due to severe shortages of appropriate cadres the governmental agencies in refugee settlements and in Nairobi were understaffed and plagued by conflicts. The erosion of credibility of the Polish Government-in-Exile aft er the Yalta conference led to the gradual marginalization by the British of the refugees’ institutions in Africa. Nevertheless, the Polish administration in Africa survived the end of the war in 1945 and its structures functioned until the departure of the majority of Poles between 1948 and 1950.

Opis:
Writing Crystal Bars, the book defined in this article as a novel concerning the problem of choices (in the world where none of the decisions taken is autonomous nor gives the promise of freedom), Kovač faced the problem of a serious choice, made for a lifetime. That was an individual choice, nevertheless subordinated to the systemic solutions. The writer’s decision to move out from Belgrad to Rovinj was not only the sign of independence but also the necessity imposed by the social and political situation. In this article, therefore, I ask the question: who is the protagonist-narrator of the novel: the exile, the nomad, the immigrant or the assimilated person? I hereby arrive at conclusion that he is partially each of these types. The world, though, makes itself accessible to him and takes the shape formed within the categories of internal experience. He always observes it from the point of view of a witness or the person taking part in the events (but not an engaged observer), always fragmentarily, from one point of view. Actually, all the characters of the novel lead nomadic lifestyle and are “homeless” in a certain way. Their lives consist in migration, constant change, mobility. They head to new adventures and, whilst tempted by “the unknown tomorrow”, open up the new chapters of their lives. Despite this, many doors remain close to them.

THE PICTURE OF THE POLISH EXILE
Opis:
Until the late seventies of the last century, the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland ,for political reasons, treated its citizens work trips to capitalist countries as an undesirable phenomenon, officially nonexistent. The information on Polish emigration of the time rarely appeared in the then press. The situation changed in the late 1980 and 1981 as a result of ongoing socio-political transformation. The press began to place reports on conditions of living outside Poland. Authors of a published material - depending on the political "inclination" of a newspaper where they were employed – either expressed sympathy for people’s fate in exile, or they mocked at their irrational decision to leave the country, or even accused of lack of patriotism and selling out to the "mammon", etc. The press releases at large, however, were characterized by considerable diversity both in a description of the exile as well as its assessment. The presented text attempts to reproduce the picture of the then Polish exile which Polish newspaper reader could have find in the official press.
