Opis:
In this paper, soluble starch was studied as a depressant of hematite during flotation separation of apatite using sodium oleate as a collector. Surface charge measurement, soluble starch adsorptions, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to understand the interaction mechanisms between minerals (hematite and apatite) and soluble starch. The results indicated that chemical interaction between hematite and soluble starch was present, and supported the bonding of hydroxyl, while physical adsorption of soluble starch molecules with apatite occurred. Results of micro-flotation studies suggested that soluble starch was considered as a selective depressant for hematite. The maximum recovery difference between hematite and apatite of 77.5% was obtained with 40 mg/dm3 soluble starch. The flotation experiment results of natural iron ore showed that flotation indexes with 59.73% Fe, iron recovery of 81.5% and 75.68% of dephosphorization ratio were achieved at a soluble starch dosage of 60 mg/dm3. However, a higher dosage of soluble starch addition caused the difficulty for flotation separation of apatite from hematite. Our results provided theoretical basis for the flotation separation of apatite from iron oxide ores.

Opis:
In this study, flocculation of marble powder suspensions was investigated depending on a polymer type and dosage. Polyacrylamide was used as a synthetic polymer, while starch was used as a natural polymer. The effect of polyacrylamide type was also examined using anionic, cationic and non-ionic polyacrylamides. Flocculation of suspensions was ascertained by turbidity measurements. It was found that anionic and especially non-ionic polymers flocculated the marble powder suspension more strongly than starch and cationic polymer. On the other hand, it was observed that the sequential addition of starch and polymer did not improve flocculation of suspension. On contrary, sequential addition of flocculants caused re-dispersion of the flocculated suspension. When a non-ionic polymer was used as the flocculant, the reached minimum turbidity of suspension was measured to be 38 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit).

Opis:
The present research work focuses on effective preparation of activated bentonite (AB) and its application in removal of oil-soluble green pigment (OSGP) from either vegetable oils or food-processing wastewater. Mono-factor experiments were carried out to explore the effects of operation factors in preparation of AB. The parameters investigated were the effect of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial OSGP concentration and temperature. The chemical composition, crystalline phases, microstructure and functional groups of prepared AB were characterized and evaluated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherms were studied, finding that the adsorption process fitted better with the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich isotherm equation. In addition, thermodynamic parameters, such as standard the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), standard enthalpy (ΔH°) and standard entropy (ΔS°) were also calculated, indicating that adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The findings of this investigation suggest that AB prepared through microwave activation as a cheap adsorbent holds great potential to remove oil-soluble green pigment in the wastewater treatment process.

Opis:
In this study, we investigate the sensing applications in the presence of the nonlinear effects by proposing an all-optical sensor and considering nonlinear effects on modal propagation and output intensity based on an ultra-compact nonlinear multimode interference coupler. The sensor can be tuned to have the highest sensitivity in the wavelength and refractive index ranges and can detect water-soluble chemicals, air-pollutions, earthquake wave, blood parameters, and heart operation. The results indicate high output sensitivity to input wavelength whereas the nonlinear effects appear in the medium. This sensitivity led us to propose a wave sensor of both transverse and longitudinal waves, such as acoustic and light waves, when an external wave interacts with an input waveguide. For instance, this sensor can be implemented using a long input that is inserted in the land, and any wave could then be detected from the Earth. The visible changes in intensity at the output facet in various refractive indices of the surrounding layer show the high sensitivity to the refractive index of the surrounding layer, which is the foundation of introducing a sensor. Generally, the results show the high efficiency of nonlinear effects in all-optical sensing performances.
