Opis:
Membrane separation is a widely used technique whose main obstacle is membrane fouling, during which a solution or particles accumulate on the membrane surface or inside its pores. This phenomenon causes both reversible and irreversible flow resistances that can be minimized with complementary techniques such as sonication and/or stirring. The application of ultrasonic energy can increase the flux by breaking the concentration polarization and cake layer on the membrane surface without affecting the intrinsic permeability of the membrane. Our work focused on cellulase and β-glucosidase enzyme recovery through sonicated/stirred ultrafiltration from the real fermentation broth, at which the fermentation liquid was produced from tobacco plants. Membrane filtrations were carried out in a laboratory-grade batch ultrafiltration cell, extended with stirrer and ultrasound processor. The effects of stirring speed and ultrasound treatment were investigated on the membrane’s permeate flux efficiency and on the quality of recycled enzymes. Resistance values were calculated by the resistance-in-series model, as well as by Hermia’s analysis, to reveal deeper, process-related information. Our results revealed that enzymes could be efficiently separated from real fermentation broth. Furthermore, the enzyme activity test showed that neither stirred nor sonicated processes were detrimental to the enzyme activity.

Opis:
The effectiveness of recovered washing compositions containing single-phase detergents from cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems as solutions for the regeneration of membrane modules fouled during the filtration of wastewater from the prerinsing of the production line (white water) was assessed. The influence of process parameters (regeneration time, transmembrane pressure, cross-flow velocity, and solution temperature) on relative flux recovery was evaluated. A significantly higher regeneration efficiency of the ceramic and polymeric modules was obtained for the alkaline detergent compared to that of the acid formula. The key process parameters for the regeneration cycle were the contact time of the module with the cleaning detergent and its temperature. The influence of transmembrane pressure and cross-flow velocity on module permeability was negligible. Filtration experiments with white water confirmed that the membrane separation process is suitable for the recovery of milk compounds from dairy effluents.

Opis:
The kinetics of chromium(III) transport through a supported liquid membrane containing both a di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and bis-(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex272) as an ions carrier was investigated. It was found that under a characteristic concentration of the carriers into the organic phase membrane provides much higher efficiency than the membrane containing only one of the extractants. In the studied system the optimal carrier concentration in the membrane is 0.16 mol/dm3 and 0.9 mol/dm3 for Cyanex272 and D2EHPA, respectively. Moreover, the authors indicate that only D2EHPA can act as an individual carrier in the membrane. In the case of Cyanex272 the stable structures with chromium(III) ions are formed in the membrane, which prevents effective re-extraction. Additionally, intensive stirring of an aqueous phase in another factor that has a positive influence on the transport kinetics in the double-carrier membrane. Increasing a stirring rate up to 1200 rpm shortens the process time and allows total re-extraction of chromium.

Opis:
The transport of Zn(II) ions from different aqueous nitrate(V) source feeding phases (cMe = 0.001 mol/dm3, pH 6.0) across polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) doped with 1-alkylimidazole as an ion carrier was reported. Alkyl substituents in position 1 of imidazole ring have an effect on hydrophobic properties of the carriers and the initial flux of the transported metal ions. The membranes were characterized by an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that the Zn(II) ions could effectively be separated from other transition metal cations such as Co(II) and Ni(II) from different equimolar ion mixtures. Also, the thermal stability of PIM doped with 1-decylimidazole was studied in replicate experiments. The highest separation coefficients for the Zn(II)/Co(II) and Zn(II)/Ni(II) systems, equal to 9.4 and 11.9 were recorded for the equimolar Zn(II)-Co(II)-Ni(II) mixture for 1-hexylimidazole as a carrier, while using 1-decylimidazole resulted in the highest values of initial flux of the Zn(II) ions transport across the polymeric membrane.

The transport of Cu(II) ions from an equimolar mixture of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) ions as well as from solutions containing only Cu(II) ions in the feed phase through polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) with aromatic β–diketones as carriers has been investigated. The polymer membranes consisted of polyvinylchloride (PVC) as the support, bis(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (ADO) as plasticizer, and aromatic β–diketones (benzoylacetone (1) and dibenzoylmethane (2)) as ion carriers. The transport selectivity of PIMs with 1 and 2 was: Cu(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II). The highest recovery factors of Cu(II) ions were observed for 1 (94.0%), whereas for Co(II) and Ni(II) the factors were 21.4 and 7.3%, respectively. The Cu(II)/Co(II) and Cu(II)/Ni(II) selectivity coefficients were equal to 8.9 and 33.7 (for 1), 6.4 and 28.3 (for 2), respectively.

Opis:
Transport of Zn(II) from unary aqueous chloride solutions and from solutions which contain mixtures of Cd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) ions in source phases (cMe = 0.001 mol/dm3, pH = 6.0) across polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) doped with 1-hexyl-4-methylimidazole as ion carrier was studied. The use of 1-hexyl-4-methylimidazole enables the separation of 98.5% Zn(II) from a unary solution and 96.9% from a quaternary solution of Zn(II)-Cd(II)-Co(II)-Ni(II) after running the process for 24 hours. Using that ion carrier, the metals are transported in the following order: Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Ni(II) > Co(II), and the selectivity coefficients of Zn(II)/Cd(II), Zn(II)/Ni(II), and Zn(II)/Co(II) are 12.9, 23.4 and 40.8, respectively. Findings of atomic force microscopy (AFM) examinations as well as thermograms of a polymer inclusion membrane containing 1-hexyl-4-methylimidazole are also presented. A membrane with 1.0 mol/dm3 of carrier has a porosity of 15.8%, and roughness of 6.6 nm. The membranes remain thermally stable at temperatures up to 200oC. The findings were compared with earlier-reported results for 1-hexylimidazole.
