Opis:
The presence of Fe-silicides, extremely rare mineral phases were documented in the Permian Cu-bearing ore formation in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline (Polkowice-Sieroszowice and Rudna mines, SW Poland). It is a first report of their occurrence within rocks of Late Palaeozoic age. The Fe-Si alloys forme spherules of various structure and chemical composition. The silicide spherules were found in the flotation concentrates prepared from the copper ore. Their composition varies from FeSi (fersilicite) to Fe2Si3 or Fe4Si9. A dominant constituent is Fe5Si3 (xifengite) with admixtures of P, Ti, Cr and Mn. Native Si and Ti were detected in the marginal part of spherules. The current knowledge do not permit to determine unequivocally whether the Fe-silicide spherules formed as a result of Permian cosmic dust or constitute terrestrial magmatic material of ultramafic character transported into a sedimentary basin from the adjacent terrain.

The research comprises a discussion about a formation of intermetallic phase with stoichiometric composition Fe2Ti, called Laves phase, and influence of chromium on the whole structure containing this phase by means of comparison of the two alloys. A base Fe35Ni35Ti30 alloy was used as a reference and then compared with a Fe-Ni-Ti chromium doped - Fe30Ni35Ti30Cr5 alloy. The study of microstructure performed with scanning electron microscope enabled to distinguish different phases. These regions are rich in mixture of Fe-Ni and Ti-Ni elements. The identified phases are Fe2Ti and Ni3Ti which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and simultaneously it is consistent with energy dispersive spectroscopy results. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed also multi-phase composition. As a result different hardness was measured for these phases using nanoindentation. The overall hardness was established using the Vickers method.

Opis:
The present study employed density functional theory (DFT) to analyze the adsorption configuration and mechanism of Fe(OH)2+ on the kaolinite (001) surface. The findings demonstrated that Fe(OH)2(H2O)4+ is the main type in which hydrated Fe(OH)2+ can be found in aqueous solution. On the surface of kaolinite, Fe(OH)2(H2O)4+ will be adsorbed. There are two forms of adsorption: outer-sphere and inner-sphere coordination (monodentate/bidentate) adsorption. Fe(OH)2(H2O)4+ has a moderate propensity to adsorb on the alumina octahedral sheet of kaolinite when the outer-sphere coordination adsorption takes place. In cases of inner-sphere coordination adsorption, Fe exhibits a tendency to form monodentate adsorption compounds in conjunction with Ou atoms. Additionally, it prefers to create bidentate adsorption compounds through coordination with both Ot and Ou atoms. The adsorption mechanism analysis results show that the ionic property of Fe atom decreases after outer-sphere coordination adsorption. After inner-sphere coordination adsorption, some electrons of Fe atom are transferred to the surface O atom. The presence of electrons between the Fe and O atoms enhances the formation of bonds, hence enhancing the covalent nature of the Fe-O bond. Theoretical FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) calculations show that the formation of Fe-O chemical bonds. Because of the lower adsorption energy and more chemical bonds, hydrate Fe(OH)2+ is more likely to be bidentate adsorbed on the kaolinite surface.

Opis:
The adsorption mechanism of Al(III) and Fe(III) ions on bastnaesite surfaces was investigated by a combination of DFT calculation, XPS analysis, adsorption isotherm study and adsorption kinetic investigations. DFT calculation results indicated that ≡CeOH0 and ≡CO3H0 are primary functional groups on bastnaesite surfaces. XPS analysis reveals that Al(III) and Fe(III) ions adsorbed onto the bastnaesite surfaces through the interaction between aluminium/iron hydroxide species and oxygen atoms of surface ≡CeOH0 groups. No interaction between aluminium/iron hydroxide species and ≡CO3H0 groups was detected. Adsorption isotherm studies demonstrated that the adsorption data of Al(III) and Fe(III) ions is fitted relatively well by Freundlich equations, the adsorption kinetic characteristics fitted to pseudo-second order model. Freundlich constants suggested favorable process for Al(III) and Fe(III) ions adsorption, and each adsorbed metal hydroxide specie complex with at least two oxygen atoms of surface ≡CeOH0 groups.

Opis:
Effects of temperature on Fe and Ti in carbothermic reduction of vanadium titanomagnetite (VTM) concentrate with adding MgO at 1100~1500℃ were investigated. It was found that most of Fe in the VTM concentrate existed in the form of magnetite and a small amount existed as ilmenite; Ti in the VTM concentrate was mainly present in the form of ilmenite. The temperature had significant effects on Fe and Ti: increasing temperature was beneficial to decrease the Fe content in the magnesium titanate mixture, and the Fe content could decrease to 5.47% at 1500℃. Thermodynamic analysis showed that FeTiO3 and MgO preferentially reacted to form Mg2TiO4, followed by MgTiO3 and MgTi2O5 when the temperature increased from 1100℃ to 1500℃. Results of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy analyzes showed that an intermediate product of MgFe2O4 would formed at 1300~1400℃ in the actual experiment. This caused the Fe content in the magnesium titanate mixture to increase from 21.32% to 22.85% when the temperature increased from 1200℃ to 1400℃. In addition, the size of magnesium titanate particles could increase from a few microns to approximately 100 µm when the temperature increased from 1100℃ to 1500℃, which was conducive to realize the separation of metallic iron and magnesium titanate.

A hybrid ANN-FE solution is presented as a result of two level analysis of soils: a level of a laboratory sample and a level of engineering geotechnical problem. Engineering properties of soils (sands) are represented directly in the form of ANN (this is in contrast with our former paper where ANN approximated constitutive relationships). Initially the ANN is trained with Duncan formula (Duncan and Chang [2]), then it is re-trained (calibrated) with some available experimental data, specific for the soil considered. The obtained approximation of the constitutive parameters is used directly in finite element method at the level of a single element at the scale of the laboratory sample to check the correct representation of the laboratory test. Then, the finite element that was successfully tested at the level of laboratory sample is used at the macro level to solve engineering problems involving the soil for which it was calibrated

Opis:
A three-dimensional finite element technique was used to analyse single pile lateral response subjected to pure lateral load. The main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the pile slenderness ratio on the lateral behaviour of single pile. The lateral single pile response in this assessment considered both lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance. As a result, modified p-y curves for lateral single pile response were improved when taking into account the influence lateral load magnitudes, pile cross sectional shape and flexural rigidity of the pile. The finite element method includes linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb and 16-nodes interface models to represent the pile behaviour, soil performance and interface element, respectively. It can be concluded that the lateral pile deformation and lateral soil resistance because of the lateral load are always influenced by lateral load intensity and soil type as well as a pile slenderness ratio (L/D). The pile under an intermediate and large amount of loading (in case of cohesionless soil) has more resistance (low lateral displacement) than the pile embedded on the cohesion soil. In addition, it can be observed that the square-shaped pile is able to resist the load by about 30% more than the circular pile. On the other hand, pile in cohesionless soil was less affected by the change in EI compared with that in cohesive soil.

Opis:
With the aim of separating Fe and V, a vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate was selectively reduced, followed by magnetic separation. The processes accompanying reduction of the vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate were investigated using thermodynamic simulation, experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. Appropriate reduction conditions and controlling the amount of CaCO3 promoted the reduction of Fe-containing minerals to metallic Fe. V was released from magnetite, ilmenite, and titanomagnetite, and was inhibited to reduce to metallic V, leading to V enrichment in the non-magnetic products in the form of oxides. Moreover, the Fe particles wrapped the slag phase when the amount of CaCO3 exceeded 8%, which is unfavourable for the magnetic separation of Fe and V. Magnetic products with an Fe content of 87.19%, Fe recovery of 82.62%, V content of 0.09% and non-magnetic products with a V content of 1.00% and a V recovery of 85.49% were obtained when the vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate was reduced for 100 min at 1623 K with a C/O molar ratio of 2.5 and 8% CaCO3, followed by separating at a magnetic field strength of 85 mT.

Laccase from Trametes Versicolor (E.C. 1.10.3.2) was immobilized on the Fe3O4–graphene hybrid nanocomposite through the covalent attachment method (Lac/Fe3O4/GO). The effect of immobilization conditions on the activity and recovered activities such as contact time, the concentration of glutaraldehyde and enzyme was evaluated. The recovered activity of the immobilized laccase on the Fe3O4–graphene oxide nanocomposite was ca. 86%. Immobilized laccase unlike free laccase retained the activity and exhibited higher resistance to temperature and pH changes and also improved storage and thermal stability. Approximately 70% of relative activity for immobilized laccase was remained after being incubated for 2 h at 55 °C, but free laccase only remained 48%. Immobilized laccase retained 88% of initial activity after storage for 20 days, however, the free laccase only 32%. Finally, Lac/Fe3O4/GO capability was evaluated by the oxidation of phenol, p-chlorophenol, and 2,4-dichlorophenol. Lac/Fe3O4/GO was characterized by SEM, EDX, FT-IR, and AGFM.

In this paper, the nanocrystalline (Nd0.85Dy0.15)10Fe83Zr1B6 ribbons produced by melt-spinning have been investigated by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The XRD studies showed that material investigated was mainly composed of Re2Fe14B and α-Fe phases with fine grain sizes of 25 and 9 nm, respectively. The magnetic parameters determined from the hysteresis loop measurements are as follows: μ0HC = 0.96 T, μ0MR = 0.76 T, μ0MS = 1.09 T, (BH)max = 88 kJ/m3. The large remanence ratio (μ0MR/μ0MS) of 0.7 results from the exchange coupling between the soft and hard magnetic grains. The large surface interaction domains revealed by MFM confirmed the existence of strong exchange coupling between nanosize grains.

Bone quality varies from one patient to another extensively; also, Young’s modulus may deviate up to 40% of normal bone quality, which results into alteration of bone stiffness immensely. The prime goal of this study is to design the optimum dental implant considering the mechanical response at bone implant interfaces for a patient with specific bone quality. Method. 3D model of mandible and natural molar tooth were prepared from CT scan data while, dental implants were modelled using different diameter, length and porosity and FE analysis was carried out. Based on the variation in bone density, five different bone qualities were considered. First, failure analysis of implants, under maximum biting force of 250N had been performed; next, the implants, those survived were selected for observing the mechanical response at bone implant interfaces under common chewing load of 120N. Result. Maximum Von Mises stress did not surpass the yield strength of the implant material (TiAl4V). However, factor of safety of 1.5 was considered and all but two dental implants survived the design stress or allowable stress. Under 120N load, distribution of Von Mises stress and strain at the bone-implant interface corresponding to the rest of the implants for five bone conditions were obtained and enlisted. Conclusion. Implants, exhibiting interface strain within 1500-3000 microstrain range show the best bone remodelling and osseointegration. So, implant models, having this range of interface strains were selected corresponding to the particular bone quality. A set of optimum dental implants for each of the bone qualities were predicted.

Gas-based direct reduction and magnetic separation process was applied in treating a high-phosphorus oolitic iron ore, of which phosphorus mainly occured as $Fe_3PO_7$ and apatite. The mechanism of $CaCO_3$ was investigated using XRD, SEM-EDS, and mineral phase analysis. Results showed that when no CaCO3 was added, most of the iron minerals were reduced to metallic iron, while $Fe_3PO_7$ was reduced to elemental phosphorus and mixed with the metallic iron particles. When a small amount of $CaCO_3$ was added, $CaCO_3$ preferentially reacted with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and other components, preventing them from reacting with FeO and resulting in the increase of iron recovery. When the amount of $CaCO_3$ reached 25%, apatite was produced from the reaction of CaO and $Fe_3PO_7$, which could be later removed by grinding and magnetic separation.

Opis:
Extending the use of the p–y curves included in the regulation codes API and DNV to design large-diameter monopiles supporting offshore wind turbines (OWTs) was unsuccessful as it resulted in an inaccurate estimation of the monopile behavior. This had prompted many investigators to propose formulations to enhance the performances of Winkler model. In this paper, two case studies are considered. A case consisting of an OWT at Horns Rev (Denmark) supported by a monopile in a sandy soil was studied first. Taking the FEA using ABAQUS as reference, results of WILDOWER 1.0 (a Winkler computer code) using the recently proposed p–y curves giving design parameters were plotted and evaluated. In order to see the ability of proposed p–y curves to predict the monopile head movements, and consequently the first natural frequency (1st NF), a second case study consisting of a monopile supporting an OWT at North Hoyle (UK) was selected. The monopile head stiffness in terms of lateral, rocking, and cross-coupling stiffness coefficients, necessary for the 1st NF, were computed using both ABAQUS and WILDPOWER 1.0. Comparisons with the measured 1st NF showed that with the exception of one p–y model, none of other proposed Winkler methods is able to predict accurately this parameter.
