Opis:
Barter exchange has been growing in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic. This article considers bartering introduced to the newsvendor model with multiplicative demand. The objective of the model is to specify the order quantity and retail price to maximize the expected profit. We distinguish cases with the co-movement of prices of exchanged products and without it. In the first case, we calculate a precise optimal solution to the problem. In the latter case, we prove the existence of an optimal solution and give the conditions under which it is unique. We examine the sensitivity analysis of the results which is illustrated in numerical examples. The analysis revealed that the greater the commission, the lower the optimal profit. We make a conclusion that barter exchange can help the retailer to improve the profit.

This paper aims to develop an inventory model considering discrete demand, coordinated pricing, and multiple delivery policies in a single-buyer single-supplier production-inventory system. The shortage is not allowed and the planning horizon is considered to be infinite. The main objective of the framework is to equip the decision-maker with optimal order, pricing, and shipment quantities to maximize the total profit of the system. The results obtained from the numerical example reveal that the proposed approach with an average selling price equal to about 94% of the classical model, has resulted in an average profit increase of about 16% and an average order increase of about 34% compared to the classical approach.

The present paper deals with an EOQ model for deteriorating items with time-dependent exponential demand rate and partial backlogging. Shortages are allowed and completely backlogged in this model. The backlogging rate of unsatisfied demand is assumed as a function of waiting time. The concept of penalty cost is introduced in the proposed model because there are many perishable products that do not deteriorate for some period of time and after that period they continuously deteriorate and lose their values. This loss can be incurred as penalty cost to the wholesalers/retailers. In any business organization, the penalty cost has an important role for special types of seasonal products and short life products. Therefore, the total cost of the product can be reduced by maximizing the demand rate and minimizing the penalty cost during a given period of time. The purpose of our study is to optimise the total variable inventory cost. A numerical example is also given to show the applicability of the developed model.

Key factors influencing electricity consumption in the residential sector in Poland have been identified. A fixed-effects model was used, which includes time effects, and a set of covariates, based on the model developed by Houthakker et al. This model estimates electricity demand by using lagged values of the dependent variable along with current and lagged values of electricity prices, and other variables that affect electricity demand such as: population, economic growth, income per capita, price of related goods, etc. The model has been identified according to the research results of the authors and those obtained by Bentzen and Engsted. The set of covariates was extended to the lagged electricity price given by a tariff (taken from two years previous to the time of interest) and heating degree days index, a very important factor in European Union countries, where the climate is temperate. The authors propose four models of residential electricity demand, for which a confidence interval of 95% has been assumed. Estimation was based on Polish quarterly data for the years 2003–2013.

Opis:
A supply chain system has been investigated in which a single manufacturer procures raw materials from a single supplier, processes them to produce finished products, and then delivers the products to a single retailer. The customer’s demand rate is assumed to be time-sensitive in nature (ramp type) that allows two-phase variation in the demand and production rate. Our adoption of ramp type demand reflects a real market demand for a newly launched product. Shortages are allowed with partial backlogging of demand (only for the retailer), i.e. the rest represent lost sales. The effects of inflation of the cost parameters and deterioration are also considered separately. We show that the total cost function is convex. Using this convexity, a simple algorithm is presented to determine the optimal order quantity and optimal cycle time for the total cost function. The results are discussed with numerical examples and particular cases of the model discussed briefly. A sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution with respect to the parameters of the system is carried out.

The effect of lead time plays an important role in inventory management. It is also important to study the optimal strategies when the lead time is not precisely known to the decision-makers. This paper aimed to examine the inventory model for deteriorating items with fuzzy lead time, negative exponential demand, and partially backlogged shortages. This model is unique in its nature due to probabilistic deterioration along with fuzzy lead time. The fuzzy lead time was assumed to be triangular, parabolic, trapezoidal numbers. The graded mean integration representation method was used for the defuzzification purpose. Three different types of probability distributions, namely uniform, triangular and beta were used for rate of deterioration to find optimal time and associated total inventory cost. The developed model was validated numerically, and values of optimal time and total inventory cost are given in a tabular form, corresponding to different probability distributions and fuzzy lead-time. The sensitivity analysis was performed on the variation of key parameters to observe its effect on the developed model.

Opis:
In the business world, it is generally observed that the supplier gives a cash discount due to advance payment. The buyer may either pay off the total purchase cost or a fraction of the total purchase cost before receiving the products. If the buyer makes full payment then he receives a cash discount instantly. If the buyer pays a fraction of the total purchase cost, then (s)he receives the cash discount while paying the remaining amount at the time of receiving the lot. Moreover, in most of the inventory models, it is generally assumed that the delivered lot contains only perfect items. But in reality, the presence of imperfect items in the received lot cannot be overlooked as it will affect the total profit of the system. Thus, the study of inventory models considering the presence of imperfect items in the lot makes the model more realistic and it has received much attention from inventory managers. This paper develops a model that jointly considers imperfect quality items and the concept of an advance payment scheme (full and partial). The objective is to determine optimal ordering quantity to maximise the total profit of the system. The necessary theoretical results showing the existence of global maximum is derived. The model is illustrated with the help of numerical examples, and sensitivity analysis is carried out on some important system parameters to see the effects on the total profit of the system. The study shows that a full advance payment scheme is beneficial for the buyer.

Opis:
Characteristics of price patterns have been investigated in an oligopoly market with costs for switching a provider. Two regimes of a company’s access to information have been considered. In the benchmark scenario, firms make decisions based on perfect information about demand. In the other – more realistic scenario – they conduct market research to estimate an unknown demand curve and therefore face uncertainty regarding their profit function, which in turn leads to suboptimal decision making. The authors inspected how a company’s access to information on demand, costs for switching a provider and the rate of market renewal influence price patterns on the market. It has been shown that positive switching cost is a sufficient condition for price dispersion, as well as imperfect information about the company's profit function, e.g. from market research. The average price under the perfect information regime is lower than under market research based price setting, a higher switching cost makes it easier for companies to coordinate their prices and a higher rate of market renewal softens the influence of the switching cost on market price.

Rinsing wastewater from dyeing and bleaching processes in a cotton dyeing facility has been separately characterized to evaluate the suitable treatment processes and reuse options. Alternative treatment processes were proposed based on molecular weight distribution (MWD), ultraviolet absorbance of 254 nm (UV254) and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA). Rinsing wastewater samples were sequentially filtrated to determine the MWD of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total Keldahl nitrogen (TKN) and ammonium (NH4+). Bleaching rinsing wastewater had higher organic and nitrogen contents than dyeing rinsing wastewater and concentrations of pollutants decreased after each membrane filtration step. During the sequential filtration, BOD5/COD ratio in bleaching rinsing wastewater slightly decreased while it significantly increased in dyeing rinsing wastewater. SUVA values indicated that organic matters in the rinsing wastewaters have hydrophilic characteristics in all conditions. The evaluation of all experimental data indicates that combination of anaerobic treatment and NF membrane filtration could provide high quality water for reuse within the facility and discharge into receiving environments.

Opis:
The awareness of making decisions in an imprecise environment has resulted in considering the inventory system under a fuzzy approach. The effects of uncertain demand have been finding increased application in many inventory systems. Uncertainty creates complicated situations for the manufacturer in making decisions. Markets have become more competitive as a result of technological advancements. The effect of inflation on the overall cost of the inventory system is useful in providing a tool for the analysis of inventory decisions. This study intended to estimate the effect of different fuzzy numbers on a manufacturer's annual joint expected total cost. The comparative study of this proposed model has been considered for two different fuzzy numbers with the defuzzification technique as the centroid method. The optimization technique has been used to minimize the producer’s joint expected total cost under the condition mentioned earlier, and the model is validated numerically.

Importantly, thermal and flow parameters of a secondary loop in pressurized water reactor technologies are sufficient to supply a district heating networks. Therefore, NCHP (Nuclear Combined Heat and Power) systems seem to be a viable replacement for traditional coal-fired cogeneration units located in big cities and may contribute to environmental protection in both local and international scale. In this paper working conditions of a municipal heat network, such as a pressure drop and the heat loses, were calculated and adapted to expected Poland’s first nuclear power plant located in Pomerania Province. Cumulative probability distribution model of heat generation power in metropolitan area and future heat demand have been created and used to identify optimal size of NCHP heat output. Main parameters of heating network were presented and discussed. The positive effects on environment were assessed and summarized as well.

The study assesses the performance of experimental wetland pond systems vegetated by Lemna minor L. (common duckweed or lesser duckweed) for textile azo dye removal. The objectives are to assess the influence of L. minor on water quality parameters, compare the dye and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of four dyes (Acid Blue 113, Reactive Blue 198, Direct Orange 46 and Basic Red 46) with each other, and monitor the effect of dye accumulation as a function of the relative growth rate (RGR) of L. minor. Findings indicate that the simulated shallow pond systems remove BR46 (low concentration) significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other dyes, and the ponds containing L. minor outperformed control ponds by around 51% in mean removal efficiency with a potential of L. minor for phytoremediation of approximately 13% efficiency.

Opis:
The objective of this article is to maximize the joint profit for supplier and retailer by constructing a combined supplier–retailer inventory model wherein supplier and retailer both have implemented trade credit policies, and some defective items are received by the retailer. The customer’s demand is expressed as a function of time, price and credit period, which is appropriate for the products for which demand increases initially and after some time it starts to decrease. Production, directly proportional to the customer’s demand rate, is considered as one of the decision variables for the purpose of reducing the holding cost of the supplier. The article estimates the optimum replenishment cycle, customer’s credit period, retail selling price by a classical optimization technique. For validation of the derived model, various numerical examples are demonstrated. Finally, implementing sensitivity analysis on the decision variables by varying the inventory parameters, effective managerial insights are generated which is beneficial for the players of supply chain by practically gaining the maximum joint profit through advising to opt for the case N ≤ M ≤ T , i.e., when the customer’s trade credit period offered by the retailer is lesser than the retailer’s trade credit period offered by the supplier and which is lesser than the replenishment cycle length.

The fourth-order stream of the Baltic Sea has been analysed, which is a tributary which remained in the riverbed as a result of natural river stretches not corresponding to the status of good water quality. The authors examined separate river stretches representing maximum changes in the hydraulic gradient and investigated the dependence of variations in the concentrations of biogenic nutrients on river flow velocity, i.e., turbulence, defining it by the Reynolds criterion. The calculation of the coefficient of self-purification provides that the river flowing downstream is 100% self-purified and removes all nitrates and 61% of phosphates. The content of dissolved oxygen at the confluence of the river in spring was by 5.5% larger than that at the headwaters, whereas in the summer season, the difference in the content of dissolved oxygen in river water between the headwaters and confluence increased and made 25%. The conducted research has disclosed that the dynamics of river flow affects water quality, and therefore, for selecting monitoring places, land use structure or economic entities situated around the sampling point as well as the nature of the river flow itself must be considered.
