Opis:
High precision automated size measurements are required during industrial and scientific applications. The principle of sub-pixel measuring is based on an intensity interpolation algorithm. Combined with the characteristics of light, a system with high precision, short measuring time and low cost was developed. The proposed system is then applied to the measurement of 5 cm objects and compared with traditional measuring techniques. The experiment demonstrates that the measuring accuracy can reach up to 0.012 μm, and that the measurement size of the system is practical and prompt. In addition, it is able to meet the requirement for industrial applications in a variety of settings with stable performance and high precision.

Opis:
In this work, thermal regeneration of fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in single-mode fibers, two-mode step index fibers and four-mode step index fibers is performed, where the single-mode fibers are used as the reference in the analysis. Specifically, we investigate the behavior of the thermal decay, recovery and eventually the permanent erasure of the gratings in the temperature range from 25 to 1300°C. In the domain of demarcation energy, the thermal responses of the gratings can be normalized and they share similar characteristic curves despite the different temperature ramping rates used in the annealing treatment. It is found that the demarcation energy at the regeneration point and the attempt-to-escape frequency for each grating can be associated with the confinement factors of the fibers. The finding in this work has provided a new insight in the manufacture of regenerated fiber Bragg grating sensors by using few-mode fibers for multiparameter sensing in high temperature environments.

We numerically studied artifact issues on near-field imaging of field intensity on metal nanostruc-tures (isolated ridges and slits in a continuous film) with an apertured probe. It is shown for the latter case that the interaction between neighboring slits via propagating surface plasmon waves (e.g., surface plasmon wave interferences) makes the probe-imaged field intensity highly condi-tional in reflection of the unperturbed field. As surface plasmon behaviors and probe imaging processes are polarization-sensitive and the field components are correlated, a model analysis of the partial field components elucidates their relations, which can help to derive the unperturbed near-field image from the probed one.

Opis:
Estimation of size distribution by image analysis is a key issue in mineral engineering. However, only the surface information of ore piles can be captured, which is a headache problem in this field while only a few researchers pay attention to this problem. A new surface probability model was proposed for estimation of size distribution on a conveyor belt based on the Chavez Model in this investigation. This model was tested and verified to have smaller errors in single size fraction but have bigger errors in multiple size fractions. Several error trends were found and a correction factor was introduced to correct the higher errors. A series of linear equations were developed to calculate this specific correction factor according to Dm (average particle size) and the height of pile. Therefore, empirical probability can be estimated by the specific correction factor and calculated probability, and the surface information of ore piles can be converted into the global information of piles.

Natural diatomaceous earth or diatomite of good quality becomes rare and a demand for it increases every year. In this paper, we develop a novel method based on laminar-flow centrifugal separation to purify mid- and low-grade diatomite for industrial production purposes. Effects of the drum cone angle, drum speed, feeding concentration, feeding flow rate and feeding time on separation were investigated experimentally. The interdependency of these variables was studied using a response surface experiment. Operating conditions of a laminar-flow centrifugal separator were further optimized. Results showed that the feeding flow rate had a great influence on a silicon dioxide content of diatomaceous in concentrate and tailing. The optimal separation results were achieved as 87.5 wt.%, of SiO2 content of diatomaceous in concentrate and 6.98 wt.% in tailing. The optimal operating conditions included the drum cone angle of 0.0087 rad, the drum speed of 89.62 rad/s, the feeding concentration of 24.66 wt.%, the feeding flow rate of 2.33×10–4 m3/s, and the feeding time of 90 s. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) clearly indicated that the pore blockage on the surface of diatoms was cleared out. The variation about the breakage rate of diatom shells was lower than 5% through the pilot purification production line. The characterization of original diatomite and derived products after purification were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that the impurity content of purified diatomite was improved significantly.

Many methods based on machine vision were used to estimate coarse particles size distribution in recent years, but comparison of accuracy parameters representing particle size has not been carried out and a related representing analysis has not been yet proposed. Nine parameters were investigated. The results indicated the minor axis of equivalent ellipse and breadth of the best-fit rectangle were the most suitable for representing particle size. The former accuracy ratio was 86.43% and the latter accuracy ratio was 85.39%, while the accuracy of other parameters was less than 70%. A related representing analysis was proposed to explain this phenomenon. This research is instructive and meaningful for the size distribution estimation by machine vision.

Opis:
The near-field multiple optical trapping using high order axially symmetric polarized beams (ASPBs) is studied for the first time. First, a near-field optical trapping scheme is proposed based on the Kretschmann–Raether configuration, and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) field distributions excited by incident ASPBs are calculated, which present a multi-focal-spot pattern and the size of spots is much smaller than that of the diffraction limitation. Then, the gradient forces on Rayleigh dielectric particles formed by the multi-focal-spot focused field are computed, which indicates that multiple ultra-small particles with the refractive index higher than that of the ambient medium can be trapped simultaneously on the metal surface. The number and size of trapped particles can be manipulated by flexibly modifying the polarization order of incident beams, which is expected to enhance the capability of traditional optical trapping systems and provide a solution for massively parallel optical trapping of nanometer-sized particles.

In order to improve and accelerate the speed of image integration, an optimal and intelligent method for multi-focus image fusion is presented in this paper. Based on particle swarm optimization and quantum theory, quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) intelligent search strategy is introduced in salience analysis of a contrast visual masking system, combined with the segmentation technique. The superiority of QPSO is quantum parallelism. It has stronger search ability and quicker convergence speed. When compared with other classical or novel fusion methods, several metrics for image definition are exploited to evaluate the performance of all the adopted methods objectively. Experiments are performed on both artificial multi-focus images and digital camera multi-focus images. The results show that QPSO algorithm is more efficient than non-subsampled contourlet transform, genetic algorithm, binary particle swarm optimization, etc. The simulation results demonstrate that QPSO is a satisfying image fusion method with high accuracy and high speed.

Several studies revealed that flotation of wolframite changes with different Fe/Mn ratios, but they did not reach a consensus. This relationship in the presence of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium oleate (NaOl) as collectors was studied in this paper through comparison of probability distribution curve of wolframite with different Fe/Mn ratios between the raw ore and the flotation concentrate, the pure mineral flotation and solution chemistry of flotation. The results showed that wolframite with high Fe/Mn ratio showed higher flotation with BHA as a collector while the flotation behavior of wolframite was completely opposite with NaOl as a collector. Besides, the calculations of chemical equilibrium in the solution were plotted as ΔG°-pH graphs. The results revealed that the flotation of wolframite may be determined by the interaction between BHA and ferric(II) ion or between NaOl and manganous ion. From the perspective of collector mixture, the results also explain the high collecting capability of the BHA/NaOl collector mixture, which can be defined as “functional complementation”.

In this paper, we present a simple near-field probe model that is composed of an elongated ellipsoid and a finite metal truncated cone. The elongated ellipsoid has been shown to act as a protrusion or separate particle near a truncated cone apex with strong near-field enhancement under laser excitation. By controllably varying the length of the ellipsoid protrusion from the truncated cone, the truncated cone-ellipsoid probes can be adapted to the suitability of near-field probes. The effects of substrate material and excitation wavelength on the near field enhancement for different tip apexes are also discussed. In addition, we compared the properties of the truncated cone-ellipsoid probe with the widely used hemisphere conical tip by launching surface plasmon polaritons on plasmonic waveguides to prove the suitability of the truncated cone-ellipsoid probes as high performance near-field probes. The present simple model would provide a theoretical basis for the actual construction of probes.

The interaction between sphalerite and pyrite was investigated by dissolution test, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Dissolution tests indicated that sphalerite dissolution was promoted due to the galvanic interaction between sphalerite and pyrite. The Zn2+ ion concentration increased with increasing pyrite content and dissolved time. XPS analysis results demonstrated that a new oxidation product was formed on the sphalerite surface in the presence of pyrite in a pulp. Zeta potential measurements showed that the isoelectric point of sphalerite increased from 3.3 to 5.4 due to galvanic interaction. DFT calculation results suggested that electron transfer from sphalerite to pyrite occurred when they contacted. The Zn 4s and S 3p states of sphalerite lost electrons. The Fe 4p and 4s of pyrite states obtained electrons, and Fe 3d and S 3s states lost a small number of electrons. The surface oxidation of sphalerite was promoted due to the interaction with pyrite, and the collectorless floatability of sphalerite decreased.

In order to simplify the optical setup and the encryption process, a diffractive-imaging-based optical encryption system using a single diffraction pattern is proposed. A predesigned binary mask is placed before the plaintext in the encryption process, and three randomly distributed phase only masks are placed in the optical path. Only one diffraction pattern needs to be recorded as ciphertext by CCD. In the decryption process, an iterative phase retrieval algorithm is applied, in which the predesigned binary mask acts as a support constraint in the input plane. After the iterative process, an interpolation operation for the zero-valued pixels is also implemented. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposal are demonstrated by numerical simulation results.

Opis:
In this study the effects and mechanism of lead ions influence on wolframite flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) were studied through micro-flotation, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, logarithmic concentration diagram, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed that lead ions could significantly enhance the recovery of wolframite in flotation and adsorption density of collector BHA onto the wolframite surface. The results showed that Pb existed in the forms of lead ion, monohydric lead, and lead hydroxide at the water-wolframite interface respectively, at three pH ranges. They increased the zeta potential of wolframite. However, the zeta potential of wolframite was still negative, resulting in repulsive electrostatic force to anionic collector BHA. Combining with XPS spectra, it revealed the chemisorption of BHA onto the wolframite surface. In addition, PbO or Pb(OH)2 was observed on the wolframite surface due to the reaction between lead ions and wolframite. These reaction products increased the adsorption site of BHA on the wolframite surface because Pb-hydroxamate was found on the wolframite surface.

Opis:
The scratch on a fused silica surface was treated as a chain of connected damage sites and mitigated one after another using CO2 laser irradiation. The optical microscopy image shows that a scratch with the width of about 30 μm and length of several millimeters can be completely mitigated without the formation of debris and bubbles. The mitigated scratch can survive under raster scan laser irradiation with the fluency increased up to 11.0J/cm2 at 3ns and 351nm. On the contrary, the substrate without CO2 laser mitigation is seriously damaged under this irradiation. The light modulation induced by mitigation is much smaller when the scratch is mitigated before being damaged. The light modulation is about 2 when the distance to the mitigated sample is larger than 20cm. The birefringence induced by residual stress in the mitigated scratch is measured. The retardance of the mitigated scratch before being damaged is not visible. Therefore, residual stress in this mitigated scratch before being damaged should be not a critical potential risk in laser damage.
