The first article describing this project presented the three games that the participants played: the Ultimatum Game, the Trust Game and the Public Goods Game. This article describes the study group on the basis of a questionnaire regarding where they study and come from, their social contacts, interest in current issues, views on inequality and outlook on life. A description of the migratory decisions of students is given. In particular, two exploratory methods are used to investigate the data’s structure: Bayesian networks and principal component analysis. Bayesian networks are used to illustrate the associations between categorical variables. Principal component analysis is designed to describe latent variables which reflect the associations between numerical variables. We present the results of this analysis and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods.

Purpose: This paper proposes a model to measure the cardiac output and stroke volume at different aortic stenosis severities using a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulation at rest and during exercise. Methods: The geometry of the aortic valve is generated using echocardiographic imaging. An Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian mesh was generated in order to perform the FSI simulations. Pressure loads on ventricular and aortic sides were applied as boundary conditions. Results: FSI modeling results for the increment rate of cardiac output and stroke volume to heart rate, were about 58.6% and –14%, respectively, at each different stenosis severity. The mean gradient of curves of cardiac output and stroke volume to stenosis severity were reduced by 57% and 48%, respectively, when stenosis severity varied from healthy to critical stenosis. Conclusions: Results of this paper confirm the promising potential of computational modeling capabilities for clinical diagnosis and measurements to predict stenosed aortic valve parameters including cardiac output and stroke volume at different heart rates.

In this work extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied. A two-step extraction procedure was followed. The first step was roasting of the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures between 150 and 800oC. The second step was leaching of the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction of about 94% was achieved. In this case, the slag was roasted at 250oC with sulphuric acid higher of about 33% than that stoichiometrically required, followed by water leaching of calcine at 50oC. About 55% of iron was also dissolved under these conditions. On the other hand, for the calcine obtained at sulphation temperature of 600oC, extraction of copper in a water leaching stage was still relatively high (about 79%), whereas that of iron was comparatively low (about 6%). Dissolution of copper and iron from the calcine was found to be very fast and was complete within the first few minutes. The water temperature in the leaching step was found to have no effect on extraction of copper and iron from the calcine in the range of 30 to 85oC.

Copper smelter slag and copper smelter slag flotation tailings were leached using sulphuric acid solutions, without or with the addition of either ferric sulphate or hydrogen peroxide. Copper extraction from the slag was typically found to be twice as high as that from the slag flotation tailings. Hydrogen peroxide was determined to be the best lixiviant. Thus, copper and iron extractions were 63.4% and 48.6%, respectively, when leaching the slag with 3 M H2O2, after 120 minutes of reaction at room temperature. Copper dissolution was generally found to be the dominant process within the first 60 minutes of reaction, whereas iron dissolution dominated afterwards.

The aim of this paper is to present an example of the material microstructure characterization with the use of X-ray micro-CT and nanoindentation measurements. Firstly, the current scope of application of the aforementioned techniques is provided within different fields of science. Then, background of each of the methods is presented. The methodology of X-ray micro-CT is described with the emphasis on the Beer’s law formulation. In addition, the basics of the nanoindentation technique are outlined and major formulas for the hardness and Young’s modulus calculation are given. Finally, example results for a concrete sample are presented. The microstructure of the selected material is firstly characterized in terms of geometry using the results from the microtomograhy measurements, e.g., porosity and attenuation profiles, pore and aggregate size distribution, shape factor of pores, etc. Next, the results of the nanoindentation tests are provided, namely the hardness and Young’s modulus versus the height of the sample. The influence of the number of tests and statistical analysis on the final results is underlined.

An exchange rate can be expressed in the form of a binary-temporal representation. Such a representation is based on a discretization of movements in the exchange rate, in which to each change in the value - equal to a given discretization unit – two parameters are allocated: a binary value, consistent with the direction of change in the exchange rate (increase 1, decrease 0) and duration. Statistical examination proves the existence of dependencies between the parameters of previous changes and the direction of future changes. To model the exchange rate using the applied binary-temporal representation, an appropriate model was developed that enables estimation of the probability of the direction of future changes in the currency exchange rate based on the parameters of historical changes. This article presents an analysis of the influence of the chosen discretization unit on the quality of exchange rate modelling. For this purpose, software was written in MQL4 and C++. As a result of the study, an optimal value for the discretization unit and the optimal parameters of the model providing the highest efficiency were determined. The input data used in the analysis involved tick data for the AUD/NZD exchange rate for a five-year time frame 2012–2017.

The paper presents a virtual instrument for the measurement of the selected parameters of inductive elements (resistance and inductance) using the data acquisition card. Implemented algorithm for determining the parameters of inductive components is based on the technical method of measurement. By using software approximation of one of the input signals, the virtual instrument can be used with data acquisition card equipped with one A/D converter. Built virtual instrument also carries a full metrological analysis of the obtained measurement results.

The main aim of the research presented in the paper was to study the phenomena of shale swelling induced by CH4 and CO2 sorption. In the study, a Silurian gas shale sample from the Baltic Basin in Poland was used. Samples represented typical characteristic features of polish shale gas formations with relatively low total organic carbon (0.8%) and high clay mineral content. The first part of the study was devoted to competitive adsorption of CO2 and CH4. The second part was devoted to observation of the sorption induced swelling phenomena, where sample linear strains were monitored with the use of strain gauges. Swelling tests were conducted up to the pressure of approximately 8 MPa with CO2, CH4 and helium as the baseline. Experimental results were compared with the Seidle and Huitt model where Langmuir constants where determined with volumetric sorption tests. Results of the study showed that matrix swelling in case of CO2 adsorption was greater than in the case of CH4 adsorption. The swelling value was directly proportional to adsorption and was about 5 to 10 times smaller than in the case of coal. Sorption of methane and carbon dioxide in the gas-bearing shale was about 10-times lower than in hard coals. The Seidle and Huitt model developed for coals was equally suitable to describe the processes of shale swelling.

The effect of cyanide salts as depressants, i.e. sodium cyanide (NaCN) and complex cyanide salts such as potassium ferricyanide (K3Fe(CN)6) and potassium ferrocyanide (K4Fe(CN)6), as well as combination of sodium cyanide with ferrous sulphate (FeSO4/NaCN) on pyrite flotation was investigated. Tests covered the frothless flotation of pyrite under different concentrations of depressants at various solution pH’s with potassium butyl xanthate (KBX) as collector. Flotation test results have shown that NaCN, and even more the combination of reagents FeSO4/NaCN are more successful in pyrite depression than complex cyanide salts, such as K3Fe(CN)6 and K4Fe(CN)6. Surface characteristics of pyrite were studied using rest potential (Eh) measurements and infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (ATR-IR). In the presence of tested reagents in the flotation system, iron cyanide compounds and hydrated iron oxides were formed on pyrite surface. The composition of formed compounds depends not only on cyanide ions in the solution, but also on the pH of the system and solution species. These compounds, depending on the reagents used, are responsible for the resulting efficiency of the pyrite depression.

The paper deals with evaluation of bearing capacity of strip foundation on random purely cohesive soil. The approach proposed combines random field theory in the form of random layers with classical limit analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. For given realization of random the bearing capacity of strip footing is evaluated by employing the kinematic approach of yield design theory. The results in the form of histograms for both bearing capacity of footing as well as optimal depth of failure mechanism are obtained for different thickness of random layers. For zero and infinite thickness of random layer the values of depth of failure mechanism as well as bearing capacity assessment are derived in a closed form. Finally based on a sequence of Monte Carlo simulations the bearing capacity of strip footing corresponding to a certain probability of failure is estimated. While the mean value of the foundation bearing capacity increases with the thickness of the random layers, the ultimate load corresponding to a certain probability of failure appears to be a decreasing function of random layers thickness.

This paper presents the nanoindentation investigation of the evolution of concrete microstructure modified by the Internal Crystallization Technology mineral powders. The samples under study were retrieved from a fragment of a circular concrete lining of the vertical mine shaft at a depth of approximately 1,000 m. Due to the aggressive environment and exposure to contaminated water, the internal surface of the structure was deteriorated, decreasing its strength significantly. The mineral powders were applied directly on the surface lining. The specimens were investigated one month, three months and one year after the application of the aforementioned substance in order to verify the time dependence of the strengthening processes and durability of the crystalline phase. The microstructural changes of concrete were assessed with the use of nanoindentation technique. The testing procedure involved including the previously cut specimens in the epoxy resin and grinding and polishing in order to reduce the surface roughness. As a result of the nanoindentation tests the hardness as well as Young’s modulus of the material were evaluated. The results were then compared and statistically analyzed. As a consequence, the disintegration time of the crystalline network in the pores of concrete was identified.

Within the boundaries of the Salt Mine “Kłodawa”, rock-salts and potassium-magnesium salts occur at different stratigraphic levels. The present article introduces strength-strain properties of white rock salt, building the nucleus of northeastern edge anticline, and pink rock salt that belongs to the series of youngest rock salt. On the grounds of the research on strength and strain parameters (uniaxial compressive and tensile strength, triaxial shear strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson ratio) there is presented, in the article, variation of basic parameters determining geo-mechanical properties of rock salt in Kłodawa salt diapir.

Opis:
The article presents an application of X-ray microtomography for identification of the carbonation zone in concrete material. A concrete specimen subjected earlier to harsh environmental conditions is investigated. The material is firstly checked with the use of chemical corrosion indicators and then is subjected to microstructural analysis performed with the use of X-ray microtomography. Two different settings of scanning parameters are applied implying the image resolutions of approximately 14 μm per 1 pixel and about 7 μm per 1 pixel, respectively. The results obtained are then compared and analyzed. The depth of the carbonation zone is evaluated based on the attenuation curve. The paper highlights also the significance of the corrosion phenomenon in concrete structures. Details of the deterioration mechanisms in concrete are shortly presented.
