Opis:
The aim of the paper is to prove that leaders of the biggest companies operating in the Podlasie region demonstrate three different faces. Initially, the concept of the three faces of leaders was presented in the book The Three Faces of Leadership by Hatch, Kostera and Koźmiński. The authors explained how business officers use aesthetics to lead their companies successfully. They looked at how the leaders inspire organizations with their creativity, virtue and faith, and thus show the faces of the artist and the priest alongside the technical and rational face of the manager. The presentation of the three faces of Podlasie companies' leaders is based on the interviews published in the book Liderzy podlaskiej gospodarki by Jarmołowicz. The Three Faces of Leadership derive directly from the theory of organizational narrative - a genre which is housed in a symbolic-interpretative paradigm of management.

Opis:
The consideration of the multidimensionality and multidirectionality of management science within the research process is currently a very important challenge. The search for dependencies and connections between leadership and customer orientation falls fully into the desired research trend. Both leadership and customer orientation are widely described within management science; however, the connections and dependencies which occur between them still require further, in-depth exploration and knowledge concerning leadership and customer orientation needs to be systematised. This article aims to identify further directions of study into leadership and customer orientation in an innovative company. Additional goals include the systematisation of knowledge regarding customer-oriented leadership and the formulation of research hypotheses which will become the starting point for future studies. The conclusions are supported by the results of a quantitative study which applied the CAWI method to a group of 204 business leaders from North-East Poland. The article presents the results of the preliminary research realized as part of a research grant from the National Science Centre entitled “Leadership and customer orientation in an innovative enterprise”. The results of the conducted research show that customer orientation among business leaders is not uniform and depends on the size of their company, the style of management and the type of innovation implemented by their enterprise.

Opis:
Motivating to perform remains a very inspiring field of scientific studies. In spite of extensive research in this field, some areas, of niche nature, that require exploration can be identified. Motivating the managers is one of such areas, less popular but of tremendous importance in the process of managing a contemporary organisation. This article is theoretical and empirical. It was written to present the original results of empirical research focused on assessment of the motivation impact of 47 financial and non-financial tools by several hundred Polish managers. The research tool used in the study process was the questionnaire prepared by the author of this paper. Key preferences of the group of employees are an important source of information required in the process of optimising the effectiveness of managing the human capital and an entire organisation.

Opis:
The paper discusses leadership and management in the context of influencing people. It is an attempt to show that the ability to influence others effectively is a crucial skill of a successful leader and the essence of leadership. The author first presents some major management and leadership theories, focusing on those consistent with the aforementioned point of view. Furthermore, empirical evidence documenting the employees' perception of the Polish managers' influencing skills, based on a survey designed and implemented by the author, is presented. It concludes, however, that none of leadership skills, nor any combination of them, can guarantee the success of a leader. An effective leader needs to vary his style and adapt. Nonetheless, there are some major traits distinguishing outstanding leaders, which can also be linked to strong performance. The ability to influence people to reach organizational goals is one of them.

Opis:
Leadership plays a vital role in building the process, structures, and climate for an organisation to become innovative and to motivate team expectations toward innovations. This study explores the leadership styles that engineers regard as significant for innovation in the public sector. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to identify the principal leadership styles influencing innovation in the Australian Public Service (APS), using survey data extracted from the 2014 APS employee census comprising 3 125 engineering professionals in Commonwealth of Australia departments. EFA returned a two-factor structure explaining 77.6% of the variance of the leadership for innovation construct. In this study, the results from the EFA provided a clear estimation of the factor structure of the measures for leadership for innovation. From the results, the two factors extracted were transformational leadership and consideration leadership. In transformational leadership, a leader values organisational objectives, inspires subordinates to perform, and motivates followers beyond expected levels of work standards. Consideration leadership refers to the degree to which a leader shows concern and expressions of support for subordinates, takes care of their welfare, treats members as equals, and displays warmth and approachability. These findings highlight the role of leadership as the most critical predictor when considering the degree to which subordinates strive for creativity and innovation. Both transformational and consideration leadership styles are recommended to be incorporated into management training and development programs. This study also recommends that Commonwealth departments recruit supervisors who have both of these leadership styles before implementing innovative projects.

Opis:
Job performance is an extremely complex factor affecting organisational performance. The literature recognises factors impacting job performance positively and negatively. This article aims to verify the turnover-mitigating effect on the relationship between servant leadership and job performance. The developed moderated mediation model is empirically verified based on the data collected from 263 managers working in Poland’s for-profit organisations. The results were analysed using Macro for IBM SPSS Statistics. It has been shown that employee turnover is a mediator in the job performance model based on turnover-mitigating servant leadership. Additionally, the influence of employees’ dynamic capabilities has been analysed. The study revealed the significance of servant leadership in influencing job performance and the disruptive relationship between employee turnover and the impact of employees’ dynamic capabilities in reducing employee turnover. This research provides practical implications for managers and organisations regarding selecting the right leadership style to improve employee job performance.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to examine the role and scope of the influence of leadership on the sustainable development of SMEs. Research methods included the theoretical analysis of scientific literature and a direct survey. The quantitative sample for analysis contained 138 managers, the representatives of companies (SMEs) located in Poland. The data was collected in November and December 2015. The obtained results show that leadership is one of the key aspects that enable sustainability. It is more important than employee approval, beliefs of employees from individual departments and teams, a long-term strategy for the sustainable development of the company, approval by external stakeholders, and substantial financial resources. There is a statistically significant relationship between taking action related to sustainable business in the company and manager’s conviction (awareness) regarding the concept of sustainable business development as well as the influence of the manager on employees and the stimulation of their behaviour, including their development, decent treatment, communication with the manager, and the system of rewards and promotions. Managers undertake some action aimed at developing their employees. They also establish relationships with external stakeholders. The paper presents theoretical reflections on the relationship between the sustainable business development of SMEs and leadership, also verified by the empirical study conducted among managers of private companies. The findings of the study contribute to the understanding of the connections between these constructs. The relationship between the creation of sustainable business development is analysed in depth with reference to SMEs. Entrepreneurs and managers of SMEs can benefit from the study in order to build an organisation capable of achieving effective and sustainable development.
