As Industry 4.0 offers significant productivity improvements, its relevance has grown across various organisations. While it captures the attention of both the industry and the academia, very few efforts have been made to streamline useful indicators across stages of its implementation. Such work facilitates the development of strategies that are appropriate for a specific stage of implementation; therefore, it would be significant to a variety of stakeholders. As a result, this paper aims to establish an indicator system for adopting Industry 4.0 within the context of the three stages of the innovation adoption: (i) pre-adoption, (ii) adoption, and (iii) post-adoption. First, a comprehensive review was performed with a search expanding into the literature on innovation and technology adoption. Second, the resulting indicators were filtered for relevance, redundancy, description, and thorough focus discussions. Finally, they were categorised by their stage of adoption. From 469 innovation adoption indicators found in the literature, this work identified a total of 62 indicators relevant for the Industry 4.0 adoption, in which 11, 14, and 37 of them comprised the three stages, respectively. Case studies from two manufacturing firms in the Philippines were reported to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed indicator system. This work pioneers the establishment of an indicator system for the Industry 4.0 adoption and the classification of such indicators into three stages — pre-adoption, adoption, and post-adoption — which would serve as a framework for decision-makers, practitioners, and stakeholders in planning, strategy development, resource allocation, and performance evaluation of the Industry 4.0 adoption.

This paper exposes the difficulties in integrating “Industry 4.0 Practices” and “World- Class Manufacturing” due to the rapid expansion of production systems and the increasingly complex data monitoring. The applied methodology was to study multiple cases with the aid of a semi-structured questionnaire. The analysis comprised responses of 15 large companies with different expertise from five countries and three continents. The results show that when a company’s strategy is linked to Industry 4.0 practices and the World-Class Manufacturing method, they boost productivity by monitoring the shop floor, applying analytical tools, and spreading the organisational culture aimed at improving processes. The results also indicate that human resources are essential in this integration. The conclusion indicates robust barriers to the increasing progress of these procedures, such as the costs associated with the use of technologies, the lack of knowledge of the applied methods and tools, the lack of trained and qualified human resources, and the resistance of people to the use and application of the newly adopted practices. The continuous improvement practices do not keep up with the speed of development that the Industry 4.0 practices propose, requiring studies directed to “World-Class Manufacturing” and “Industry 4.0 practices”. Although there is a coexistence of improvement and innovation in world-class manufacturers, the literature has not yet provided a complete understanding of how this coexistence can be achieved at the manufacturing level. Therefore, the paper presents the main actions to overcome these barriers.

The main purpose of this article is to develop a method that allows for an objective quality assessment of imperfect knowledge, which is necessary for decision-making in logistics. The methodology aimed at achieving this goal is established on the system analysis of the entire process employed for obtaining, processing and using data and information as well as the knowledge generated on this basis. The result of this work is a general framework that can be used for managerial decision-making in smart systems that are part of Industry 4.0, and, in particular, Logistics 4.0. A key theoretical contribution of this framework is the concept for quantitative assessment of the maturity of imperfect knowledge acquired from Big Data. The practical implication of this concept is the possibility to use the framework for the assessment of the acceptable risk associated with a managerial decision. For this purpose, the article presents a brief example of how to use this methodology in the risk-taking decision-making process. Finally, the summary and discussion of the results are offered.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0), driven by the need to access real-time insights and information across the manufacturing process, creates a disruptive impact on industries. Largescale machine-to-machine communication, virtual reality (VR), the Internet of Things (IoT), simulation technologies and network management are integrated for increased automation, machine learning, self-controlled social and technical systems (Smart Factories). The uptake of advanced manufacturing solutions represents a challenge for businesses and SMEs in particular. SMEs possess neither the organisational capability nor financial resources to systematically investigate the potential and risks of introducing Industry 4.0. However, the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution is a matter of technology and cooperation between European regions to share knowledge concerning alternative regional and national approaches to reinforcing the I4.0 uptake. Therefore, this paper primarily aims to analyse practical experience on how European policies related to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) can unlock the full potential of Industry 4.0 and overcome the fragmentation of Industry 4.0 solutions. Case studies of successful transfer of I4.0 to SMEs in Europe and supporting regional policy instruments presented in the paper could inspire and enable the potential of digitalisation by dealing with main challenges hampering their diffusion into the business ecosystem.

Aiming to ensure current market needs, manufacturing companies search for tools and methodologies that would help them deliver their products efficiently and costeffectively and enable them to become a part of Industry 4.0. Digital twins are a technology created based on the idea of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The solution helps recreate physical devices in virtual space based on gathered data. It supports performance tests, configuration changes, and predictive maintenance without engaging existing machines. The paper aims to gain knowledge about the awareness level of the digital twin technology among industry representatives and identify the most important problems that stand in the way of implementing the technology in enterprises. The research focused on market awareness of the described technology. It also examined how companies use employee suggestions to improve their organisations and the factors that influence process efficiency. The methods used for the research were a literature review and cross-sectional survey conducted with 50 employees of manufacturing and IT companies. The research showed the need to implement digital twins in enterprises. Half of the survey respondents replied that the technology would help improve the efficiency of the company’s processes. The main benefit of the conducted research is identified awareness of the technology among industry representatives. In the future, the research will be extended to include the analysis of specific cases affecting the implementation of digital twins in enterprises.

The holistic approach to Industry 4.0 requires a broader look at the changes taking place in the area of marketing. Therefore, this article mainly aims to present an outline of changes in marketing for companies implementing the concept of Industry 4.0 in the context of Design Principles of Industry 4.0. The authors propose a conceptual framework for Marketing in Industry 4.0, deriving from the guidelines for designing strategies to implement Industry 4.0. The paper allows a better understanding of the Industry 4.0 phenomenon in the context of changes in the area of marketing in general and in industrial markets in particular. The conceptual framework presented in the article suggests a need for a new approach to shaping marketing strategies and the marketing mix in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and helps in identifying the key areas for the marketing mix according to the Industry 4.0 concept.

The textile industry is one of the fastest growing industries which expressively contributes to the economic growth of Malaysia. However, in recent years, the situation has changed and demonstrates a downward trend. The imports are growing faster compared to the exports, consequently resulting in a low contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). To address the issue, this study aims to investigate the role of Industry 4.0 on the performance of firms engaged in the production and services of the Malaysian textile industry. To achieve the objective, this study adopted a cross-sectional research design. A survey was carried out to collect data from employees of textile firms. Results of the study found that Industry 4.0 positively contributed to the effectiveness of the production and services of the textile industry. Production and services have a positive role in the performance of textile firms. The current study provides an interesting insight into the future direction of research for studies on organisational performance, which can be extended to different manufacturing-based industries. In addition, it provides the rationale for the adoption and implementation of smart technologies in these industries. It has been found that cyber-physical systems (CPS), interoperability, a smart city and a smart product have a positive effect on production and services. Additionally, it is not possible without the effective implementation of technology. Thus, the current study provides valuable insights into the improvement of the textile industry’s performance.

This study demonstrates that integrated management and direct control systems may be combined into integrated enterprise process control (EntPC) systems, which are composed of self-controlling enterprise business processes. A business process has been defined as a control system for business activities, which are considered to be business processes of the lower level, or as base processes that are control systems for control plants in the form of infrastructure operations. An enterprise process also influences its delivery. This description of a business process is usually compared with definitions used in such approaches as BPMN, YAWL, ARIS and DEMO and MERODE. Each enterprise process has its own controlling unit that contains one information unit and one decision unit, as well as memory places of the information-decision state variables that are processed by the business transitions that belong to these units. The i-d state variables are attributes of business objects, i.e. business units, business roles, business activities, business accounts and business products. Their values are transferred between business transitions that belong to the same or different controlling units. Relationships between business objects, business transitions and i-d state variables, as well as the other most important concepts of the EntPC system framework (EntPCF), are presented in this paper as the class diagrams of the enterprise process control language (EntPCL).
