Opis:
The scheme in which the Carpathians, Carpathian Foredeep and Polish Lowland are distinguished as the hydrocarbon prospective zones was used hitherto in Poland. Good geological diagnosis of Poland area enables to distinguish the petroleum provinces in terms of basin analysis (methodology). This procedure are based on an integration of multidisciplinary geological and geophysical data with into a petroleum play concept. Results of drillings and petroleum play procedures allow to predict boundaries of petroleum provinces. Effects of basin analysis with regards to the stratigraphy of hydrocarbon-bearing areas are presented in Figure 1. All these prospective areas (Fig. 1) have been matched into five independent units (Fig. 2) which could be defined as following petroleum provinces: Pomerania, Wielkopolska, Ma3opolska, Lublin and Gdansk. These petroleum provinces are only the parts of sedimentary basins the individual development of which enabled generation, migration and preservation of hydrocarbons. Location of the above mentioned petroleum provinces is also brightly reflected on the map of crustal consolidation (Fig. 3): every province in Poland has its own individual geologic history.

The Ropa tectonic window of the Magura Nappe is composed of Oligocene deposits that belong to the Grybów Nappe. The youngest deposits of the Ropa tectonic window are correlated with calcareous nannoplanton zones NP24 and NP25. The NP24 zone interval was determined in the Sub-Grybów Beds and in the Grybów Marl Formation, whereas the Krosno (Cergowa) Beds belong to zone NP25. This age determination corresponds well with that of other Magura Nappe tectonic windows and also with the southern part of the Silesian and Dukla nappes. The facies and age of the Krosno Beds from the Grybów succession record the termination of Fore-Magura basins. The Grybów Nappe deposits in the Ropa tectonic window are overthrust by Cretaceous-Eocene formations of the Magura Nappe.

Polish Permian Basin

petroleum play
Opis:
The Polish Permian Basin (PPB) is a part of the Southern Permian Basin in theWestern and the Central Europe. Results of burial and thermal analyses as well as a configuration of the Moho surface of the Polish Basin suggest the asymmetrical basin model. History of the Polish Basin reveals that the Late Permian and the Early Triassic periods represent the main rifting phase and its later development resulted from thermal relaxation. During the Late Triassic and the Jurassic time some cooling of rift heat field took place, but the turning point in thermal evolution of the Polish Basin was at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary when the south-western part of the Polish Basin was uplifted and intensively eroded. The knowledge on the Permian Basin in Poland is chiefly connected with petroleum exploration. The gas fields are located mainly in the Rotliegend reservoirs. The Zechstein deposits, overlying the Rotliegend, are also in the area of economic interest: hydrocarbons occurring in carbonate deposits of the Werra (Zechstein Limestone - Ca1 ) and Stassfurt (Main Dolomite - Ca2) cyclothems. Several tens gas fields have been hitherto discovered within the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones. Reservoirs are the clastic, terrestrial deposits of the Lower Permian and calcareous, biogenic carbonates of the Zechstein. Evaporates, mainly salts of the Werra cyclothem, are the regional sealing for the mentioned reservoirs. Natural gas accumulated in the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones is of the same origin: it was generated from organic matter occurred in the Carboniferous rocks and it migrated to higher places where it became concentrated within favourable structural or lithofacies conditions. High nitrogen content in the natural gas from the Polish Permian Basin is explained that nitrogen is generated from an organic matter within a sedimentary basin at higher temperatures than methane. Location of high helium concentration corresponds to the area of highest heat flow during the Late Permian, Triassic and Jurassic times, evidencing the Late Permian-Early Mesozoic rifting process. Numerous oil gas fields discovered in the Main Dolomite (Ca2) unit constitute it as one of the most important exploration target in the Polish Basin. It composes the closed hydrodynamic system sealed from the top and the bottom by evaporates. Both the source rocks and reservoirs are characteristic for this unit. Influence of the burial and thermal history of the Polish Basin on a petroleum play generation within the Main Dolomite unit is clearly visible. The previous and the present petroleum discoveries in the Polish Permian Basin, comparing to the other petroleum provinces in Poland, indicate it as a main exploration target.

On the 28th of June 2017, the Polish Ministry of the Environment announced the boundaries of the 15 tender areas selected for the third licensing concession round for prospection, exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. In this paper we describe the areas located in the south-eastern (Ryki) and southern Poland (Proszowice W, Rudnik-Lipiny, Błażowa and Wetlina). The other areas have already been described in the previous issue of the Przegląd Geologiczny. The exploration target of the Ryki area is related to conventional gas deposits in the Upper Devonian and Carboniferous, as well as to unconventional tight gas deposits in the Frasnian carbonates. Prospects in the tender areas located in southern Poland are related to conventional oil and gas deposits in the Carpathians, Carpathian Foredeep and their Paleozoic-Mesozoic basement.

Opis:
From the beginning of the 20th century until the interwar period, Poland was at the forefront of crude oil producers in the world, and then in Europe. Poland, as a result of war damage, and first of all territorial changes that occurred after World War II, lost significant resources of this raw material. At the same time, the development of oil demand, related to the economic recovery of the country, contributed to the need to develop imports, which during 1990-2017 increased from 13.0 million tons to over 24.0 million tons of crude oil. Poland, due to the technical configuration of domestic refineries, as well as the availability of the "Przyjaźń” pipeline, imports crude oil mainly from Russia. However, Polish refineries have the opportunity to develop alternative sources of supply through the availability of Naftoport in Gdańsk. Thus, the progressive diversification of supplies, causes a decline in the share of Russian oil (from 95% during 2001-2005 to 74% in 2017), for the benefit of raw material from the Middle East, but also North America or other European countries. The extraction of crude oil from domestic deposits increased in the analyzed period from 0.15 million tons to 0.94 million tons in 2017, but in recent years it covers only 3-4% of domestic demand.

Opis:
Poland has the limited gas and oil resources. Main hydrocarbons supplies are delivered to Poland mostly from Russia by oil and gas pipelines. Very large length of these pipelines as well as the local considerable wearing of devices induces the necessity of reserves storage. Geological conditions in Poland and a considerable quantity of exhausted gas deposits enabling in nearest years to the construction of underground gas storages (UGS) suggest the new investments in this sector of petroleum industry. Capacity amount of present active UGS is 1.58 x 10exp.9 mexp.3 but after finalizing of storages their volume will achieve 2.8 x 10exp.9 mexp.3. Special attention is paid to the Wierzchowice UGS (the biggest one in Poland) and to caverns leaching within the Zechstein salts cavern underground gas storages (CUGS) Mogilno and Kosakowo. Reservoirs of cavern type (expensive under construction) are a very efficient, modern source of gas system supply, particularly in periods of the seasonal demand fluctuations for gas - a very high during the winter season in the central and the northern Europe. Only caverns in salts allow to store both the gas and the liquid hydrocarbons. Construction of the UGS refers mostly to exhausted gas fields, discovered and exploited by the Polish Oil and Gas Company. Experience and capital of the state company located it as a leader in Poland in the field of construction and exploitation of underground storages. Their construction has the minimum influence on the environment. Utilization of exhausted hydrocarbons deposits (often with the existing mining infrastructure) is not almost at all troublesome for a local population and the environment and it offers considerable practical and economic benefits. The economical boom in the oil and gas market during last years creates new challenges for construction and exploitation of hydrocarbons underground storages.

Opis:
The study area is located in the central part of the Polish Outer Carpathians in the vicinity of Jasło. Petroleum reservoir described here is the third Ciężkowice sandstone (Upper Paleocene), composed of channel fill and depositional lobe succession. The Osobnica field is a part of an ancient deepwater fan system, referred to as the Eastern Fan. Within this system, seven sandstone packages interbedded with mudstone/fine sandstone deposits were recognized. The first, second and the third package are characterized by coarsening- and thickening-upward trends, and are interpreted as depositional lobes. The overlying four packages, each roughly 40 m thick, show upward fining and thinning and are interpreted as channel fill deposits. In the Osobnica field, the total resources are calculated at about 491 500 tons, of which some 352 600 tons of oil were exploited until 2002. Map of resource arrangement and structural modelling have indicated that the main factor controlling the distribution of hydrocarbons in the Osobnica field is the shape of the structure, whereas facies development played a subordinate role. The main part of oilfields is in the SE elevated part of the Osobnica anticline. Oil accumulated in both channel and lobe deposits, although channel fills appear to be slightly more oil prone.

Opis:
For its development, Polish economy needs a number of mineral raw materials that are not present in the country. An important way to increase the country's raw material security is to search for the necessary raw materials abroad. Among such countries is the Republic of the Congo. Advantageous geographic location with access to the Atlantic Ocean, the presence of geological structures rich in various mineral resources, such as tin, tungsten, coltan (Ta-Nb ore), polymetals (Cu-Pb-Zn), iron (BIF deposits), potassium salts and phosphate rock, as well as favourable legal regulations promoting foreign investments, make the Republic of the Congo a country with which Poland should cooperate in the field of raw materials and mining industries. A relatively small part of the Republic of the Congo is well explored, but the potential of undiscovered mineral resources is very large. Poland, having a well-educated cadre of geologists, can and should share its experiences with specialists working in the geological survey of the Republic of the Congo. Such cooperation can bring many benefits to both cooperating countries.

Opis:
This article deals with a significant issue of environmental protection of oil and gas deposits that have recently drawn a considerable attention. The presence of old insufficiently sealed or entirely unsealed wells, formerly serving a purpose of oil and natural gas extraction, pose a significant threat to the environment. In the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic (an area of hydrocarbon extraction both in historical and recent times), there is a significant amount (hundreds) of production wells. It is very difficult or often even impossible to find information in archival materials on the cease of extraction from these wells and on the system of abandonment procedures applied. During the recent surveying and re-abandonment works, it was found that many wells had been abandoned inadequately and unprofessionally, and numbers of wells still have not been abandoned at all. This poses a considerable risk to the South Moravian landscape, especially to the sources of drinking water and to agriculture (to the Protected Area of Natural Water Accumulation - CHOPAV, Morava River Quaternary). Furthermore, it is a significant threat to the areas where extremely valuable biotopes occur. This article discusses the possible disposal of these ecological hazards to the areas of hydrocarbon deposit occurrences through recycling of old drawing wells as potential pollution sources of soil and water. Similar problems have certainly appeared in the Polish territory, where intense extraction took place at a far greater number of deposits, and where the wells already operated in the 19th century, in days gone by when there was little knowledge of abandonment procedures and little awareness of proper old well sealing.
W artykule omówiono ważny problem ochrony środowiska w rejonie złóż ropy i gazu, którym ostatnio poświęcano wiele uwagi.

On the 28th of June 2017, the Polish Ministry of the Environment announced the boundaries of the tender areas selected for the third licensing round for concessions for prospection, exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. This round is going to be proceeded in the 4th Quarter of 2018 and 1st Quarter of 2019. The geologists of the Polish Geological Survey selected 15 tender areas (promising for discoveries of conventional and unconventional oil and gas fields) based on the geological data resources stored in the National Geological Archive, other published data, as well as the knowledge and experience of employees of the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute and the Polish Ministry of the Environment. All selected areas are located onshore. In this article we describe 10 tender areas located in the Gdańsk, Pomerania and Wielkopolska petroleum provinces. Other tender areas situated in the Carpathians (Błażowa, Proszowice W, Rudnik-Lipiny, Wetlina) and in the Lublin Petroleum Province (Ryki) will be discussed in the next publication. Three areas: Wejherowo, Bytów and Braniewo-Miłakowo are located in the northern Poland (Gdańsk Petroleum Province). The exploration targets of these areas are generally related to structural-lithological traps in the Middle Cambrian beds of the Baltic Basin, as well as to unconventional shale oil and gas in the Lower Paleozoic. Seven tender areas are situated in the northwestern Poland (Pomerania and Wielkopolska Petroleum Provinces). Three of them - Chodzież, Piła and Leszno are dedicated to conventional gas deposits in the Rotliegend sandstones and, in some cases, also oil deposits in the Zechstein/Main Dolomite. Excluding the Leszno tender area, chances for tight gas discoveries exist within the Rotliegend sandstones. The exploration target of the Konin tender area is related to possible conventional fields in the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous beds. In the Pomerania region the exploration target is generally related to conventional hydrocarbon deposits in the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian (Rotliegend and Zechstein/Main Dolomite). Three tender areas are situated within the region of: Sierpowo, Orle and Chełmno. As a rule, a concession is granted for a period of 10 to 30 years and is divided into 2 phases: 1) prospecting and exploration phase (which lasts from 4 to 5 years and can be extended to another 2-year period), 2) production phase. Every entity interested in obtaining a concession needs to undergo the qualification procedure. We believe that this publication will contribute to better understanding of the offered tender areas and encourage activity in the Polish oil and gas sector.

On June 26, 2020, the Polish Minister of the Environment announced the boundaries of four areas dedicated to the next, 5th tender round for hydrocarbon concessions in Poland, planned in 2021. These are: Gryfice, Gorzów Wielkopolski S, Kartuzy and Siedlce W. The main exploration target of the areas located in western Poland - Gryfice and Gorzów Wielkopolski S- is related to conventional accumulations of oil and gas in the Permian/Main Dolomite. Moreover, the Permian/Rotliegend and Carboniferous/Westphalian sandstones are an additional target in the Gryfice area. On the other side - in the northern and eastern part of Poland (East European Platform), the Kartuzy and Siedlce W areas are prospective for shale-gas and shale-oil discoveries in the Lower Paleozoic shale formations, as well as for conventional and tight-gas/tight-oil accumulations in the Cambrian sandstones. These four areas have been selected from 24 proposals reported by the Polish Geological Survey as the most prospective areas for petroleum exploration. However, the tender procedure is only one of two ways of granting concession in Poland. The second way is the open-door procedure, in which an entity may apply for a concession in any area that is not a subject of a tender or other concession, but the area cannot be greater than 1200 km.
