Opis:
A new ceratite locality from Gołuchowice (Upper Silesia, Poland) is described. Ceratites from the spinosus group found there include Ceratites (Acanthoceratites) cf. praespinosus, found for the first time in Upper Silesia. Five ceratite zones are proposed for that region: pulcher, robustus, compressus, evolutus and spinosus. The taxonomic compositions of individual ceratite zones from Upper Silesia are almost identical to those of corresponding zones from the Holy Cross Mountains. However, ceratite zones in Poland show lower taxonomic diversity than their equivalents in Germany.

Middle Miocene foraminifera from the Skawina Formation of the Upper Silesia Basin have been analysed. The stable oxygen and carbon isotope signatures in Globigerinoides quadrilobatus (shallow pelagic), Globigerina bulloides (deeperpelagic) and Uvigerina spp. (benthic) tests show a temporal pattern of changes in the sections studied. The foraminiferal assemblage biozones of the Badenian that were identified earlier, on the basis of taxonomic composition, correspond to changes in the foraminiferal ẟI8O and ẟI3C values. The CPN7/CPN8 transition - as the Moravian/Wielician border - is marked by distinct isotopic events: a ẟ18O increase (IIAB/IIC boundary) followed by a ẟ13C decrease (IIC/IID boundary).

Opis:
Globorotaliids of the Skawina Formation (Badenian) come from deposits representing CPN 7 (Orbulina suturalis Zone) and CPN 8 sub-evaporite Wielician (Globigerina druryi–G. decoraperta Zone alias Uvigerina costai Zone) age. There are two taxonomic groups of globorotaliids in the studied material: globoconellids (Globoconella bykovae and G. minoritesta) and jenkinsellids (Jenkinsella mayeri and J. transsylvanica). There are five stratigraphically-rank intervals of these foraminifers prior to the Middle Badenian salinity crisis in Central Paratethys. The investigated Badenian begins with G. bykovae–J. mayeri association followed by the first occurence (FO) of J. transsylvanica. The closing member of the CPN 7 biozone is the G. bykovae–J. transsylvanica assemblage. The jenkinsellids disappear during CPN 7: J. mayeri first and J. transsylvanica after. Since the base of CPN 8 in situ jenkinsellids have not been noted in the Badenian deposits. The CPN 8 begins with a stratigraphic interval barren of globorotaliids (biozone IIC in the Polish Paratethys). It is followed by episodic appearances of globoconellids (G. bykovae and G. minoritesta) in the sub-evaporite Wielician (IID biozone in Poland). G. minoritesta has been found in only one case so far. The globorotaliid stratigraphic units are distinct and well-correlated with changes in climate and the circulation of water masses in Paratethys. This study provides additional data on Mi3 in Paratethys. It documents a cryptic cooling event in the late Orbulina suturalis Zone (mid CPN 7) located at the late IIA–B assemblage (alias upper lagenide zone) in regional biostratigraphic scale. The event is recorded by J. transsylvanica Acme, matching with circa 1‰VPDB δ18O positive excursion. The event must have resulted in a considerable sea level drop – a trigger of the Moravian ecosystem demolition in the Paratethys environment.

Opis:
The paper deals with sub-evaporite Badenian deposits (Middle Miocene, Paratethys) that display a sudden appearance of globorotaliid taxa showing preferences in the taxonomic set and coiling direction. An interval of sinistrally coiled Jenkinsella mayeri with proportionally coiled Globoconella bykovae is at the bottom of the studied sequence. It is followed by an interval of proportionally coiled Jenkinsella transsylvanica. Proportionally coiled Globoconella bykovae with a small number of proportionally coiled Jenkinsella transsylvanica are at the top of the Moravian (CPN 7) substage (Orbulina suturalis alias Lagenidae Zone). The sub-evaporite part of the Wielician (CPN 8) substage (Uvigerina costai alias Spiroplectammina Zone) began with a globorotaliid-barren interval (IIC biozone). It is followed by biozone IID displaying three globorotallid peaks amongst globorotallid-barren deposits. Only globoconellas are present in all these three events. Proportionally coiled Globoconella bykovae appeared first. It is followed by proportionally coiled Globoconella minoritesta and sinistrally coiled Globoconella bykovae at the end of the biozone IID. Coiling preferences of globorotaliids have been compared to changes in the hydrographic regime unfolding during the CPN 7 and CPN 8 in the studied area of the Paratethys. The study discovers that the coiling of globorotaliids responded selectively to the hydrographic changes. Globoconella bykovae is highly opportunistic and can tolerate considerable temperature changes. Specimens of this taxon persist to coil proportionally during the sub-evaporite Badenian, except for the shift to sinistral coiling just prior to the Wielician evaporites. Sinistrally coiled Jenkinsella mayeri is the most sensitive to hydrographic changes. This taxon retreated at the onset of the temperature drop during the mid-Moravian cryptic cooling. This cooling is marked by the new jenkinsellid occurrence – proportionally coiled Jenkinsella transsylvanica. Proportionally coiled Globoconella minoritesta is present in the middle of the IID globorotaliid peaks. The globorotaliid coiling data, presented in this paper, has been calibrated to the global stratigraphy. The integrated data (foraminifera, nannofossils, oxygen and carbon stable isotopes, radiometric measurements) supports the view that the CPN 7/CPN 8 boundary is coeval to the Langhian/Serravalian one. In the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep, the boundary runs within the Skawina Formation.

Combustion of coal is still one of the main sources of energy and electricity in Poland. For cost reasons, and because of the need to protect the environment, it is important to use coal as efficiently as possible. One of the indicators of coal combustion efficiency is the amount of unburned organic matter in slag and fly ash. This organic matter occurs in different morphological forms. This paper provides an overview of the char morphological forms found in slag and fly ash from selected boilers installed in Będzin Power Station (Poland). The relative quantities of particular morphological forms are compared with the maceral composition of the feed coal. The aim is the better understanding of the influence that maceral composition has on combustion performance.

About 300 polycyclic aromatic compounds were identified using the GC-MSmethod in deposited dust collected in sites located outside the industrial belt of the Upper Silesia agglomeration. Concentrations of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) range from 6.8 mg/g dust for anthracene to 142 mg/g dust for fluoranthene. Concentrations of highly carcinogenic PAH e.g. benzo(a)pyrene, benzofluoranthenes and benzo(a)anthracene range from 49 to 145.5 mg/g of dust. Significant concentrations (up to 35 mg/g of dust) of carcinogenic C22H14 PAHs (m/z 278) and C24H14 PAHs (m/z 302) were determined in all samples. Aromatic ketones and quinones as well as aromatic nitrogen and sulphur compounds with concentrations ranging from 2 to 45 mg/g of dust, were found in the polar NSO fraction. Molecular composition of hydrocarbons in the deposited dust is characteristic of the terrestrial organicmatter, as suggested by the presence of long chain n-alkanes with odd carbon skeleton predominance. However, relatively high concentrations of steranes and distribution of homohopanes different from terrestrial organic matter suggest that part of extractable organic mattermay be from diesel engine exhausts and/or paved road dust. The origin of the organic compounds adsorbed on the deposited dust is related to not complete coal combustion and possibly to other sources, such as automobile exhaust. The occurrence of phenyl-polyaromatic hydrocarbons and polyphenyls such as terphenyls, phenylnaphthalenes and their methyl derivatives, phenylphenanthrenes, phenylfluoranthenes and/or phenylpyrenes results from the free radical phenylation of aromatics during organic matter combustion.

Accumulation of 34 trace and major elements was analysed in 9 plant species (Tussilago farfara, Arctium tomentosum, Solidago canadensis, Populus L., Eupatorium cannabinum, Verbascum sp., Solanum nigrum, Rumex crispus L., Betula pendula) and one fungus (Schizophyllum commune) collected from coal, PbZn-smelting, and mixed-type waste heaps in Upper Silesia (Poland). The most persistent and extreme enrichment was found in the burnt bark of Betula pendula from Bytom. Enrichment factors in relation to the geometric mean of elevated (PE) and hyperaccumulator (PH) plant contents show extreme values for elements toxic to vegetation, such as Zn (EFPE up to 13, EFPH up to 17), Pb (EFPH up to 4, EFPE up to 161), Tl (EFPE up to 8), Cd (EFmax of 327), Hg (EFPH up to 3), and Ag (maximum EFPE of 14). Elevated are also V (EFPN up to 13), Sc (EFPN up to 14), Ni (EFPN up to 17), Se (EFPN up to 16), Fe (EFPN up to 48), Co (EFPN up to 23), Sb (EFPN up to 31), and Bi (EFPN up to 34). Although the levels of the elements studied were usually below potentially toxic levels, they were often above the normal ones. Furthermore, significant differences in the contents between different plant tissues were observed, as reflected in the translocation factor (TF). Verbascum sp. and S. nigrum accumulate such elements mostly in their above-ground tissues, and may thus be considered useful in phytoextraction of Zn, Pb and other elements. Sl. canadensis and E. cannabinum mostly display the opposite strategy, with element immobilization in their roots. Extreme Zn contents in E. cannabinum, peaking in its roots, suggest it to be a potential Zn phytostabilizer.

Opis:
Brunovistulia is a composite terrane of Gondwana descent that eventually was accreted to the SW margin of Baltica, central Europe. It is built of metagneous and metasedimentary rocks that originated mainly between 650 and 550 Ma. However in the Upper Silesian part of Brunovistulia, much older fragments have been drilled, which yielded U-Pb zircon ages between 2.75 and 2.0 Ga. They have been interpreted as an “exotic” constituent of the Brunovistulia superterrane, named the Rzeszotary Terrane. Our geological and geochemical studies of the Rzeszotary borehole cores yielded new data on the composition, provenance and evolution of that terrane. Precursors of the Rzeszotary complex were separated from the depleted mantle prior to or around 3.2-3.0 Ga. At 2.75-2.6 Ga, a juvenile magmatic arc edifice formed, beneath which oceanic lithosphere was subducted. Decompression melting of the mantle brought about tholeiite magmas of IAT/MORB composition with LILE additions. Tonalitic and trondhjemitic precursors of gneisses present today were formed at that time, probably due to partial melting of mantle-derived wet basalts at the base of the island arc. Around 2.0 Ga, the arc collided with an unspecified cratonic mass and was subject to orogenic deformation, metamorphism and migmatization. The entire arc edifice was then strongly shortened and forced down to depths equivalent to ~6-12 kbar where the rocks underwent contractional deformation and metamorphism (~500-700°C). Tonalites and trondhjemites were changed to gneisses, and basites to epidote- and garnet amphibolites. These rocks underwent syntectonic migmatization through the mechanism of segregation/differentiation in the presence of fluids and incipient partial melting. Synmetamorphic shortening of the rock pile, which led to folding and heterogeneous development of shear zones with thrust kinematics, terminated with intrusions of K-granites at 2.0 Ga, being followed by some brittle-ductile deformation of unconstrained timing. The 2.0 Ga event may have been connected with the 2.1-1.8 Ga global amalgamation of the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent of Columbia. Later the future Rzeszotary terrane was detached from the Gondwana mainland, reassembled and eventually, in the Neoproterozoic, it became part of the foreland of the Cadomian Orogen in Central Europe.

Opis:
A geochemical study of Palaeozoic diabase dykes and sills from the Holy Cross Mts. and Upper Silesian Block (southeastern Poland) has revealed that these diabases are most probably derived from fractional crystallization of three distinct primarymelts. All diabases are relatively evolved subalkaline tholeiites with low mg-numbers that vary between 50.7 and 60.5. Their mantle normalised incompatible element patterns are intermediate between that of enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB) and ocean island basalt (OIB). The compositional differences within the diabases are interpreted in terms of slightly variable degrees of partial melting of their mantle sources combined with variable degrees of subsequent gabbro fractionation in high-level magma chambers. Some incompatible element ratios (e.g. Zr/Nb, Y/Nb) in the diabases and Nd isotope data from the cogenetic diorites seem to be consistent with mixing of partial melts from both enriched lithospheric and depleted asthenospheric mantle sources. Both Upper Silesian and Holy Cross diabases show strong chemical similarity to the continental flood basalts (CFB), which are associated with extensional tectonics. The Bardo diabase, located in the northern part of the Małopolska Block, can be hypothetically linked to the detachment of this unit from the Baltica margin and subsequent displacement to its final position between the late Ludlovian and Emsian, whereas the Milejowice-Janowice diabase (Łysogóry Unit) possibly relates to the extension of the Baltica passive margin during the Late Silurian, in the final stage of its collision with East Avalonia.

Opis:
New geological, geochemical and U-Pb SHRIMP zircon age data brought more information about basement units in subsurface of Southern Poland and SE Romania, which allows to revise and refine some earlier models in the framework of the break-up of the Rodinia/Pannotia supercontinent. In the Brno Block, Moravia, and in the Upper Silesia Block, three different terranes formed the composite Brunovistulia Terrane. The Thaya Terrane (low eNd(T)) of Gondwana (Amazonia) descent collided obliquely at 640–620 Ma with the Slavkov Terrane (moderate eNd(T)) composed of amphibolite facies metasediments and arc-related, mostly unfoliated granitoids which intruded at 580–560 Ma. At that time, back-arc rifting separated the couple Thaya–Slavkov (inherited zircons: 1.01–1.2, 1.4–1.5, 1.65–1.8 Ga) that drifted away from Gondwana until collision around 560–550 Ma with the Rzeszotary Terrane, the Palaeoproterozoic (2.7–2.0 Ga) crustal sliver derived from Amazonia or West Africa. At least these three units composed Brunovistulia, which occurred at low latitudes in proximity to Baltica as shown by palaeomagnetic and palaeobiogeographic data. Then Brunovistulia was accreted to the thinned passive margin of Baltica around its Małopolska promontory/proximal terrane. A complex foreland flysch basin developed in front of the Slavkov–Rzeszotary suture and across the Rzeszotary–Baltica/Małopolska border. The further from the suture the less amount of the 640–550 Ma detrital zircons extracted from the Thaya–Slavkov hinterland and the smaller eNd(T) values. In West Małopolska, the flysch contains mainly Neoproterozoic zircons (720–550 Ma), whereas in East Małopolska 1.8–2.1 Ga and 2.5 Ga zircons dominate, which resembles nearby Baltica. The basin infill was multiphase folded and sheared; in Up per Silesia prior to deposition of the pre-Holmia Cambrian over step. In Małopolska, the folded flysch series formed a large-scale antiformal stack with thermal anticline in its core marked by low-grade metamorphic overprint. In Central Dobrogea, Moesia, Ediacaran flysch also contains mainly 700–575 Ma detrital zircons which link the source area, likely in South Dobrogea with ca. 560 Ma granitoids, rather close with Gondwana. However, fauna in Lower Cambrian overstep strata shows Baltican affinity. Such features resemble Upper Silesia, thus Brunovistulia might have extended beneath the Carpathians down to Moesia. The other part of South Dobrogea with Palaeoproterozoic ironstones resembles Ukrainian banded iron formation. If true, the Baltican sliver would be incorporated in Moesia. Such a possibility concurs with the provenance data from Ediacaran flysch of Central Dobrogea, which points to uplifted continental block as a source of derital material. Our study supports an earlier proposition that at the end of the Neoproterozoic a group of small terranes that included Brunovistulia, Moesia and Małopolska formed the Teisseyre-Tornquist Terrane As semblage (TTA). In our model, a characterisistic feature of the TTA was a mixture of crustal elements that were derived from both Gondwana and Baltica, which gave rise to mutual collisions of the elements prior to and concurrent with the docking to Baltica in latest Ediacaran times. The presence of extensive younger covers and complex Phanerozoic evolution of individual members of the TTA impede the recognition of their Neoproterozoic history.

Sulfidic coal mining wastes constitute one of the the major global bulk waste stream and are extensively reused in engineering constructions. Occurrence in the waste rock of geochemically instable sulfides results in A/NRD (Acid/Neutral Rock Drainage) that makes this material environmentally problematic. The paper is focused on the impact assessment of coal mining waste management practices exemplified in different objects (coal mining waste dumps) and different waste management methods (residual coal extraction, embankment construction, ground leveling and using as a structural fill of a waterlogged quarry) on chemical status of groundwater. Long-term groundwater monitoring data in the vicinity of three dumping sites and the analysis of pore solutions extracted along the vertical profiles of the waste layers of different ARD generation potential shows that high sulfate salinity, which resulted from sulfide oxidation, is the major long-term source of strong groundwater deterioration caused both by ARD and NRD. Abundant constituents released by ARD are Mn and in anoxic groundwater environment also Fe. The results show the need of application of groundwater protection measures both with respect to ARD and NRD generating coal mining waste.

Opis:
In the Upper Silesia Coal Basin and on the adjoining areas, besides dominant in resources and the amount of bituminous coal output, there of other occurs mineral raw materials. In spite of local industry restructuring, production of mineral raw materials in this region still remains significant for its economy. Among other European Community countries the larg-est bituminous coal resources occur in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Poland is the European Union leader in coal production and export. Exploitation of some mineral raw materials, such as: iron ores, zinc-lead ores and brown coal, in different times was discontinued while others (rock salt, Mo-W-Cu ore) from beds recognized to a different degree was not started. Making use of waste mineral raw materials, mainly mining, metallurgical and energetic ones, is becoming more and more significant economically and ecologically. Sometimes synthetic raw materials are produced, such as: gypsum (desulphogypsum) obtained from desulphurisation of fumes, Ca-Mg fertilizers from dolomite wastes, crushed and synthetic aggregates from mining and metallurgical wastes, lead and silver from recycling and salt from coalmine water desalination. On the basis of imported raw minerals, iron, steel and ferroalloys are produced. Zn-Pb concentrates are also imported on larger scale. Such raw materials as: raw materials used for production of noble ceramics and rock wool are delivered from other regions of the country. Sustainable development of the Upper Silesia leads to rational and environment friendly managing of mineral raw materials, protection of their resources, as well as to usage of industrial wastes. Protection of resources from neglected deposits (coalmines in liquida-tion) constitutes an important problem, still to be solved. It is connected with substantial financial spendings and preparation of suitable legal acts. A substantial amount of mining, processing, metallurgical and energetic wastes, accumulated as well as produced on a regular basis, requires suitable management. An appropriate example of that is placing mining and energetic wastes under the ground, using them as consolidating stowing for sealing cavings and using them as a dummy road packing. Mining wastes are also applied in engineering works, such as for instance, in construction of embankments, land levelling etc. Flotation silt is used as fuel in the households and the material obtained after their decarbonisation is used in recultivation.
