Opis:
Most of the craters on the Earth, produced by an impact of meteorite or other space object, have been masked by exogenous processes. The refore, indirect indicators of the impact such as shocked quartz have been recognized. The impact metamorphism is visibly recorded within quartz by distinctive microstructures. However, only the planar deformation features (PDF) are unquestionable evidences of impact. They should be investigated with particular accuracy because of similarity to endogenic planar microdeformations such as: growth features or metamorphic deformation lamellae. The K/Pg boundary interval from the Polish Outer Carpathians (Skole Unit, Husów. Thrust Sheet, Bąkowiec section) have been studied. This note presents difficulties in identifying shock features in quartz grains collected from turbiditic material.

Opis:
The area in question represents northern part of the centralWest Carpathians and the boundary zone of Poland and Slovakia (before 1918 the boundary of Galicia and Upper Hungary). From the end of 18th century the authors of geological maps of this area were mostly Austro-Hungarian geologists, but also specialists from other countries. The first cartographic documents refer to the occurrence of mineral raw materials (Hacquet, 1796). A little later some elements of stratigraphy and tectonics were also considered (Staszic, 1815). Zejszner (1844) was the first to pay attention to biostratigraphy and this problem was continued by his followers. In the "Geological Atlas of Galicia" (1885-1914) the authors took into account tectogenesis, at first following the theory of contraction (Uhlig, 1897, 1899) and, subsequently, the concept of nappes (e.g. Lugeon, 1902, 1903; Uhlig, 1907; Limanowski, 1911; Rabowski & Goetel, 1925; Goetel &. Sokołowski, 1930; Guzik, 1939). Until the beginning of the 21st century, the number of cartographic works (maps and cross-sections) printed separately or as attachments and inserts within texts, reached more than 1000 positions. Particularly the cartography of the 20th century, including the map of the Tatra Mts. 1 : 10 000, represents very valuable basic material for the recently prepared "Detailed Geological Map of the Tatra Mts. 1 : 10 000".

Flood-deposited, muds are characterised by considerable variability of their lithological characters. This variability reflects the development of the river forming the terrace, the geological setting of the drainage basin and the morphology of the flood plain. The lithological variability of the muds causes great vertical and lateral variability in the engineering geological parameters. Therefore all calculations based on mean values obtained from laboratory analyses are prove to error. The most reliable values of parameters are obtained from fieldwork "in situ".

The revision of classification methodologies for determination of soil expansivity revealed that parameters most frequently used for this purpose are: the liquid limit, plasticity index and swelling parameters which also predominate in older systems of expansive soil assessment, regarded as classical. Seventy-nine soil samples, including Neogene clays and glaciall tills from Central Poland, with a wide range of plasticity were examined for a comparative analysis of soil expansivity with a use of eight empirical methods. The study revealed that Neogene clays are mostly highly and very highly expansive, while glacial tills exhibit low to medium expansivity. Compared to classifications considering soil mineralogy indicators, those correlated solely to Atterberg limits and related parameters were found to overestimate soil expansivity. It is evident that the classifications are in better agreement for glacial tills than for clays. The comparison of mineral composition measured and predicted from swelling tests yielded consistent results.

Opis:
This study details the petrology and chemistry of the Oligocene succession of the Grybów Nappe in its stratotype-locality in the Grybów tectonic window (Polish Carpathians). The section studied is composed of the Sub-Grybów Beds, the Grybów Marl Formation (GMF), and the Cergowa Beds, representing the middle to upper part of the Oligocene succession. The rocks studied consist of quartz, calcite, Na-plagioclase, muscovite and clay minerals (illite-smectite with 25–30% of smectite and kaolinite). Additionally, hematite occurs in the GMF and chlorite in the Cergowa Beds, respectively. The macerals assemblage of the GMF is dominated by landplant-derived compounds of liptinite, associated with minor amounts of vitrinite representing type II kerogen. The total organic carbon (TOC) content is between 0.45 and 6.16 wt.%. The δ13Corg values of the GMF vary between –27.1 and –27.9‰. The values of both carbon and oxygen isotopic ratios of carbonates range for δ13C from –1.1 to –4.3‰ VPDB, and for O from –1.5 to –4.8‰ VPDB. The concentrations of Co, U, Ni, As, and Mo are higher in the GMF than in the adjacent strata and positively correlate with TOC and S. Values of the TOC/S and V/V+Ni ratios are 0.7 to 3.5 and 0.67 to 0.78, respectively, and indicate anoxic conditions. The ratios of U/Th and V/Cr (0.3–2.2, 1.18–3.18, respectively) suggest the change of oxic conditions to reducing conditions occurred during the GMF deposition. This change could have been preceded by a plankton bloom, initiated by a nutrient-rich freshwater inflow that is inferred from the decrease of the δ13Ccarb values and the terrestrial detritus supply. Thermal alteration of the Grybów Succession is concluded on the basis of smectite illitisation and low δ18O values.

Study of four boreholes (each 100 mdeep) drilled in the St. Bronisława Hill (a part of the horst of the Wolski Forest, Kraków area) indicated that within the Oxfordian limestone occur claystones with calcareous rubble (detritus), filling the fossil karst forms. The claystones, that in some cases show planar stratification, contain assemblages of Late Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian) foraminifers. The Middle Miocene planar laminated limestones have also been found in cavities formed in the Middle Oxfordian limestones. Miocene deposits of this type, filling the fossil karst, were not previously known from the area of Kraków. Both the Upper Cretaceous and the Middle Miocene deposits document probably marine sedimentation that resulted in the filling of the karst system. This type of karst was probably formed before the transgression of the Upper Cretaceous sea and the subsequently before the transgression of the Middle Miocene sea into the area of present horst of the Wolski Forest.

The paper presents the results of swell index, swelling pressure and soil suction tests carried out on Neogene clays from Warsaw, depending on the water content, clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite. These clays are considered expansive soils in Poland, as they are vulnerable to water content variations in the active zone, which result in their volume change and, in consequence, cause damage of foundations and other construction elements. A number of physical, chemical and mineral properties were determined for these clays. The swelling tests were carried out on samples precompacted in Proctor apparatus, at various initial values of water content. The analyses have shown exponential relation of swell index, swelling pressure and suction versus water content. In addition, the investigated relationship between the suction and swell characteristics of tested clays shows good correlation as a power function between these parameters. In addition, validity of correlations between fitting parameters of obtained relationships and soil index properties, such as clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite, have been demonstrated. The empirical relations are characterized by high values of the correlation coefficient. A very high fit has also been found for a proposed relationship between the swell index and swelling pressure for tested clays.

Geological setting and precipitation triggers seem to be obvious parameters controlling landslides, but their relation to individual sliding processes has not been clear. We take on interdisciplinary approach (combining Earth science methods with an engineer ing-geotechnical approach) to examine sliding processes in the Kawiory landslide in the Polish Carpathians. Field parameters were obtained from inclinometer monitoring, meteorological records, piezometer data and geomechanical tests. Numerical simulation of the landslide development was performed, both for the reconstruction of the internal deformation phenomena on the slope and for approximate prediction of its future behaviour. An empirical formula describing the relationship between the depth of groundwater level (GWL) and precipitation is presented. The case study showed that for the ob served quasi-continuous creep, the depth and in particular the intensity of GWL fluctuations might be crucial.

Opis:
This paper presents the characteristics of the expansivity and quantitative prediction of heave of clay soils from Poland based on suction testing. 11 Neogene clays and 6 glacial tills, differing in genesis and plasticity, were analyzed to identify the expansive potential using eight empirical methods. The laboratory studies included measurements of soil-water characteristic curves and soil index properties. Data from water content, volume and suction measurements served to determine the suction compression index Ch and the suction-water content index Dh/Dw of the soils examined. The values of these indices are clearly dependent of the clay fraction content in tested soils. Compared with glacial tills, Neogene clays are expected to exhibit larger changes in volume due to changes in soil suction. Comparative results of the evaluation of expansivity suggest that the chosen classification methodologies provided consistent expansion ratings for glacial tills, while values for Neogene clays vary from low to very high. The lowest expansivity classes have been obtained from evaluation based on soil suction. The McKeen (1992) method has been adopted for calculations of the potential field heave of Neogene clays and glacial tills. In order to provide a rational estimation of expansive soil behavior, specialists should take into consideration the specific site and design features.

New petrological and geochemical data lead to a consistent depositional model of the Corg.-rich sedimentation within the Pieniny Basin during themid-Cretaceous. Considerable terrestrial runoff into the Pieniny Basin occurred during the late Albian. Detritalmacerals accumulated under aerobic conditions on the shelf and continental slope. Fertilization of surface water induced primary productivity; aerobic degradation of organic matter led to the development of an oxygen-minimumzone within mid-water. The oxygen-minimumzone spread over almost all of the Pieniny Basin (Albian/Cenomanian). At the same time, a stagnant pool developed in the Grajcarek Basin. During the mid-Cenomanian the O2 minimum zone retracted and covered only the shelf and upper/middle slope. Stagnant pools might have formed in the depressions. Turbidity currents flowed down the slope and deposited calciturbiditic sequences with organic detritus in the Branisko and Pieniny basins. At the end of the Cenomanian, isolated anoxic or even H2S-bearing basins existed on the shelf. The slope was still occupied by the oxygen-minimum zone. In the deepest part of the sea-floor a stagnant basin formed.

Opis:
The area of Poland, including the Carpathian Mountains, is located in a zone where landslides cause large material damage. This issue can be considered using different time scales. Using various dating methods, it was possible to distinguish periods of increased landslide activity. Among others, the radiometric methods are the most common. Based on the 14C dated landslides in Szczawnica-Biafy Stream, Zapadle near Szymbark, Rychwatd near Żywiec and on data published by Margielewski (2006), it was possible to hypothesize that landslides in the Carpathians have been developing over 13,000 years, i.e. since the Oldest Dryas. This is related to the beginning of degradation of the permafrost, which can be considered as the inception of the development of large rock landslides. On the basis of the presented data, it can also be stated that these landslides have been active up to modern times and their development is very long. An example of this is the landslide in Zapadle. The position of the landslide tongue, which is subjected to erosion, is of great importance, which promotes its further activity. Permanent removing of the colluvial material by a stream and its supplementing by subsequent new displacements from the scarp causes that the landslides can be active for a very long period of time.

Opis:
This paper presents an issue of microstructural changes in clay soils during the water loss due to increase of suction pressure. The change of microstructure affects the geological engineering properties of soils causes problems with the foundation of buildings. The volumetric changes of cohesive soils, containing significant amounts of clay minerals from the smectite group, are caused by a variable water content in soil. The phenomenon of the moisture change significantly alters the geological engineering properties of these soils as a result of shrinking and swelling. This paper aims at presenting the microstructural changes in remoulded specimens of Neogene clays caused by loss of moisture due to suction pressure. The scientific examination involved quantitative analyses of the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study pore space details of remoulded specimens. Tested samples from selected levels of the Neogene clays (Poznan Series) were collected from the Warsaw-Stegny area. Samples were taken from a research polygon for these clay soils. The basic geological engineering properties of clay soils and remoulded specimens have been examined after being prepared according to strictly defined procedures. Through successive stages of the suction pressure (from 50 to 1600 kPa), the samples underwent the process of loss of moisture. Application of a novel method of sample preparation procedure for remoulded specimens allowed examining structurally homogeneous soils and obtaining results without an effect of material anisotropy. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of soil microstructures were performed using SEM and STIMAN software for quantitative images processing. The analysis allowed determination of the number of geometric and morphometric parameters of the microstructure with high accuracy. Based on this study, significant qualitative and quantitative changes in loss of moisture due to suction pressure in the process of remoulded specimens were noted along with changes in the microstructure and pore space of clay soils. The obtained results showed the effect of successive stages of "closing" of the structure of cohesive soils. Microstructural changes have a significant influence on the values of clay soil properties during the shrinkage and swelling process, which are caused by changes in the water content.

The Gdów “embayment” is the most pronounced deflection along the northern boundary of the Carpathians. It is filled by the sandy clay deposits which used to be named the Skawina Formation or Chodenice beds or, locally, conglomerates (of Sypka Góra). Their stratigraphic position according to studies of foraminifers had been determined as Badenian. New results obtained from micropalaeontological material sampled at three exposures near Wiatowice, Jawczyce (Giewont) and Gdów (Sypka Góra), and based on boreholes, indicate a much younger age of for the deposits infilling the Gdów “embayment”. These studies show that the surface deposits are not older than Late Sarmatian/Pannonian (Serravalian/Tortonian). They also suggest a much later time for the last stages of the thrusting of the Carpathian Mountains over the Carpathian Foredeep.
