    The paper is based on the material contained in the ten-volume Dictionary of Names Used in Contemporary Poland, ed. by K. Rymut and in the Dictionary of Old-Polish Personal Names, ed. by W. Taszycki. It consists of three parts. In the first part consisting of such names as Rezmer (etc.) and Celmer (etc.), I reconstructs such old-Polish names as Redzimir (< Radzimir) and Żelimir; they are not confirmed in the SSNP. In the second part there are such names as Brommer, Kammer and Stammer, in the SSNO they are not confirmed; I interpret them as the effect of the respective reconstructed and abbreviated words, and thus confirmed directly or indirectly, the ancient two-element names like Bronimir, Kanimir and Stanimir. Finally, in the third part I devote space to such names as Cyrklaff (etc.) and Niecław (etc.). The name Cyrklaff is a graphic and phonetic transformation of the German name of the place Zirzlaff (Western Pomoria) with the historical inscriptions of the type Sillezlaw of 1335; this name is derived from the old-Polish Sulisław, noted from the twelfth century onward. The name Niecław I propose to derive from the name Niecisław, which has not been confirmed in the SSNO. Its forms, respectively reduced, would be contemporary names of the type Necel or Niec. The series of contemporary names Niecław − Necel − Niec would be somewhat analogical to such series of the contemporary names as e.g. Węcław − Wencel − Wenc.

    The Polish names in the toponymic system of the Lvov territory are above all results of the dynamic Polish colonisation process mainly from the second half of the fourteenth century up to the end of the sixteenth century. In the second half of the fourteenth century there are ten names, in the fifteenth century – 46 names, in the sixteenth century – 67, in the seventeenth century – one name, in the eighteenth century – two names, in the nineteenth century – nine names, in the twentieth century – one name. From 1945 onwards, that is, in the period of Soviet Russia, we dealt with a mass disappearance of Polish names. In the time of communism the natural link of the Lvov territory and Poland was broken. We observe the process of de-Polonisation of the onomastic map of this region.

    This paper touches upon contemporary Polish affective names as a specific lexical category. The paper discusses the material collected in Annex, which is to illustrate changes within the onomastic category under analysis. The analyses proposed by the author draw upon the dictionary of Terms of Endearment by Mirosław Basko and Agnieszka Zygmunt, published in 2010. The author also relies on the collection of intimate vocabulary extracted from the letters of some 20th-century writers to their loved ones. The corpus of affectionate names is analysed in terms of their grammatical and thematic status quo: the majority of cases are nouns and adjectives; morphologically – most of them are diminutives, hypocorisms and augmentatives. The author also focuses on the use of vulgarisms - sexual expressions in particular – in naming intimately close persons, and on affectionate names inspired by English, such as names of characters from famous films, cartoons or satirical series and dramas.

    Der soziokulturell determinierte Bedarf an entsprechenden Ausdrucksformen ist oft in verschiedenen Kulturkreisen anders. Der sozial bedingte Sprachgebrauch ist jedoch nur im Rahmen der aktuell verfügbaren sprachlichen Mittel möglich. Im Beitrag werden aktuell gewonnene Ergebnisse einer Umfrage über das im Titel formulierte Problem präsentiert, die unter Frauen in Deutschland und Polen durchgeführt wurde. Ziel der Studie ist es, nach zehn Jahren seit der letzten ähnlich konzipierten Untersuchung eine Entwicklung und eventuelle Veränderungen in der sprachlichen Realisierung von weiblichen Personenbezeichnungen im deutschen und polnischen Sprachgebrauch zu beleuchten. Die Studie unterscheidet sich von anderen Untersuchungen dadurch, dass hier der Gebrauch der Sprache in Bezug auf die Sprachbenutzerinnen selbst untersucht wird. Zwischen dem Deutschen und Polnischen wird eine gewisse Asymmetrie in der Bildung und Verwendung von femininen Personenbezeichnungen bestätigt. Sie ist allerdings nicht bloß Ausdruck von Einstellungen und kann nicht als einziges Kriterium einer Bewertung der Mentalität eines bestimmten Kulturkreises dienen. Sie ist auch zum Teil durch Möglichkeiten des Sprachsystems bedingt.
    The socioculturally determined need for corresponding forms of expression is often different in various cultural circles, which is in turn influenced by social factors. However, the socially determined use of language is only possible within the framework of the currently available linguistic means. This paper presents the recent results of a survey the problem formulated in the title conducted among women in Germany and Poland. The aim of the study was to examine, 10 years after the last similarly designed survey, the development and possible changes in the linguistic realisation of female personal names in German and Polish language use. The study differs from other research in that here the use of the language is presented in relation to the language users themselves. A certain asymmetry in the formation and use of feminine personal names is confirmed between German and Polish. However, it is not merely an expression of attitudes, and cannot serve as the sole criterion for an evaluation of the mentality of a particular cultural group; it is also partly conditioned by the possibilities of the language system itself.
    Uwarunkowane społecznie potrzeby realizacji pewnych form wyrazu często są odmienne w różnych kręgach kulturowych. Nawet najbardziej zdeterminowane społecznie użycie języka jest jednak możliwe wyłącznie w ramach aktualnie dostępnych środków językowych. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki najnowszych badań nad sformułowanym w tytule problemem przeprowadzonych wśród kobiet w Polsce oraz w Niemczech. Celem pracy jest stwierdzenia ewentualnych zmian, zachodzących od czasu przeprowadzonej dziesięć lat temu analizy realizacji żeńskich nazw osobowych w języku polskim oraz niemieckim. Badanie wyróżnia się spośród innych analiz tym, że obserwacji poddano nazwy sformułowane przez użytkowniczki języka w odniesieniu do samych siebie. Praca potwierdza istniejącą nadal asymetrię w tworzeniu i używaniu żeńskich nazw osobowych w obydwu językach. Asymetria ta nie jest jednak wyłącznie wyrazem postaw i nie może stanowić jedynego kryterium oceny mentalności danej grupy kulturowej. Jest ona także uwarunkowana aktualnymi możliwościami systemu językowego.

    Przedmiotem niniejszej analizy są polisemiczne leksemy języka niemieckiego i polskiego oznaczające zwierzęta. Analiza kontrastywna dotyczy jedynie tych znaczeń, które stanowią metaforyczne rozszerzenia odnoszące się do ludzi. Bazują one na „asocjatywnych stereotypach” (Kilian 2005). Wyróżnione zostały trzy obszary odniesienia wartościowania danego określenia, mianowicie poziom umysłowy, zachowanie oraz wygląd / percepcja. Mogą się one w niektórych przypadkach zazębiać. Porównywane pary leksemów wykazują ekwiwalencję w różnym stopniu, łącznie z ekwiwalencją zerową, która najbardziej przemawia za asocjatywno-stereotypowym charakterem badanych znaczeń. Konfrontative Analyse polysemer Tierbezeichnungen im Polnischen und Deutschen Den Gegenstand des vorliegenden Beitrags bilden polyseme deutsche und polnische Tierbezeichnungen. Ihre metaphorischen Bedeutungen, wenn sie sich auf Personen beziehen und auf „assoziativen Stereotypen“ (Kilian 2005) beruhen, werden kontrastiv behandelt. Bei der Wertung der jeweiligen Lexeme werden drei Bezugsbereiche unterschieden: Intellekt, Verhalten und das Äußere. Diese Bereiche können sich überschneiden. Die verglichenen Lexempaare weisen unterschiedliche Äquivalenzstufen auf, darunter die Nulläquivalenz, die am stärksten für den assoziativ-stereotypen Charakter der analysierten Bedeutungen spricht.
    The object of the present analysis are polysemous animal lexemes. Only meanings of lexemes are described and compared, which comprise metaphorical extensions referring to intellectual level, human behavior and appearance. These metaphorical extensions are based on „associative stereotypes” (Kilian 2005), i.e. on conventional, collective semantic features attributed to certain animal species, which are neither objective nor verifiable in terms of truth and falsity. The compared pairs of lexemes can be equivalent to different degrees, including the zero equivalence, which most of all denote the associative and stereotypical character of the examined meanings.

    The two articles describe discuss some questions of the flexion of local names that are genetically adjectival and functionally nominal, either in Polish or, broadly, within the Slavonic languages. There are two models of flexion that are proper to such names. They result from the adjectival structure of formation and nominal function of names. Among average language users the variant inflectional forms give rise to question about their linguistic correctness. The examples of teachers’ incompetence with regard to onomastic grammar prove that they cannot general language users to understand such problems. The reasons for this state of affairs should be seen in the quality of education and unwillingness to self-education.

    Odbity w języku, jego strukturze, leksyce i użyciu (uzusie) obraz otaczającej mówiących rzeczywistości – jak najkrócej można zdefiniować językowy obraz świata (JOŚ) – pełni bardzo ważną rolę w każdym akcie komunikacji. Nie można o nim zapominać również w trakcie uczenia się i nauczania języka obcego. Jest on bowiem źródłem licznych błędów, szczególnie leksykalnych. Autor artykułu pokazuje to na przykładach z literatury przedmiotu oraz z własnej praktyki dydaktycznej. Językoznawcom obserwacja procesu przyswajania języka obcego, błędów popełnianych przez uczących się i nauczycieli, może natomiast wiele powiedzieć nie tylko o językowym obrazie świata w poznawanym języku, lecz także – przez kontrast – w języku ojczystym badacza.
    The picture of the reality surrounding us reflected in the language, its structure, lexis and usage – as the linguistic picture of the world may be defined in the shortest way – plays a very important role in any act of communication. It may not be forgotten also in the course of learning and teaching a foreign language. This is because it is the source of numerous mistakes, especially lexical ones. The author of the article shows this on examples taken from the literature of the subject as well as from his own didactic work. Observing the process of acquisition of a foreign language, and of the mistakes made by both learners and teachers, may tell linguists a lot not only about the linguistic picture of the world in the language being learned, but – through contrast – in the researcher’s mother tongue.

    This paper focuses on the present and past pronunciation and spelling forms of the Polish and Ukrainian phonemes /ł/ /l/ and /v/. The problem of substituting the native Polish phonemes /ł/ and /w/ by /l/ and /v/, respectively, emerged when the names of the official mascots for the UEFA 2012 football championships in Poland and Ukraine were announced. The names Slavek and Slavko are meant to relate to the common Proto-Slavic root *Slavo- or *-slav, followed by the language-dependent exponents: -ek for Polish and -ko for Ukrainian. Owing to the fact that neither in Polish nor Ukrainian has the phonological assimilation of /ł/ and /l/ taken place, neither of the spelling forms or pronunciations ([Slavek] or [Slavko]) is systematically jusitified. There are no systemic grounds for the spelling of the native names with v, either. If the two names in question are to symbolize the core of Slavic tradition and heritage for the purposes of popularizing the championships, and if the way in which the names are spelled is influenced mostly by the Anglo-centric language fashion, we deal with an obvious case of linguistic ignorance of the decision makers, and with a peculiar kind of cultural schizophrenia.
