    Opis:
    The article presents the statements of selected Church Fathers (4th-5th centuries) concerning the Beatitude “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Mt 5:8), spoken by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. They emphasise that during the earthly life man can only see the reflection of God if his heart is pure. Since man was created in the image and likeness of God, he carries this image in his heart, but this image was polluted by sin. Therefore, one should purify the heart by renouncing sins and developing virtues. The most important comments on this issue were expressed by St Gregory of Nyssa and St Augustine.

    Poprawne i pogłębione zrozumienie metafory może się dokonać tylko w odniesieniu do określonego kontekstu. Artykuł przedstawia teksty z Iz 1-39 (2,5; 4,2-5; 5,20.30; 6,9-10; 9,5-6; 10,17; 29,18; 30,26), które posługują się metaforą światła. Różne jej formy czerpią ze starożytnej bliskowschodniej kultury, kojarząc światło szczególnie z boskością, osobą króla, zwycięstwem i sprawiedliwymi rządami. Wreszcie wskazuje się, jak ich zestawienie w kontekście Iz 1-39 wzbogaca ich interpretację.
    Any correct and in-depth interpretation of a metaphor necessarily presumes a reference to some definite context. The article presents a collection of texts from Isa 1–39 (2:5; 4:2-5; 5:20.30; 6:9-10; 9:5-6; 10:17; 26:19; 29:18; 30:26) where the motif of light is applied. Its various forms are inspired by the Ancient Near-Eastern cultures, which associate light especially with a divine sphere, king, victory and just rule. In Isa 1–39 light appears both in the eschatological contexts and in connection with the meaning of knowledge, especially knowledge of God. Thus the motif of light links these two fundamental contexts, not only enriching the interpretation of both but also suggesting a direct, causal relationship between knowing God and eschatological victory.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest kwestiom przeglądowym związanym z widzeniem i wizualnością w prozie Herlinga-Grudzińskiego. Ukazuje funkcje oka i widzenia oraz znaczenia nadawane przez pisarza kreowanym obrazom literackim. Zwraca też uwagę na stylistyki malarskie, stanowiące kontekst dla zrozumienia pewnej eklektyczności warstwy wizualnej prac Grudzińskiego. Na przykładzie fragmentów z opowiadania Wieża prezentuje też sensualne bogactwo stosowanych przez tego autora rozwiązań, koncentrując się na określonym wycinku warsztatu Herlinga i jednocześnie przypominając o celach realizowanych przez niego przy pomocy wybranych zabiegów.
    This article is dedicated to a review of questions related to the categories of seeing and the visual in the prose of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. The paper shows the functions of the eye and seeing, as well as the significance of the literary images created by the writer. It also points out to the painterly stylistics which provide an important context for understanding the eclectic character of the visual layer of his works. On the example of some chosen extracts from the story entitled Wieża (The Tower), the article presents the sensual richness of the ideas used by Herling-Grudziński, focusing on the methods he adopted and describing the main goals he wanted to achieve by his application of certain literary tools.
