Damages of car engine pistons are one of the most expensive failures regarding final consequences and possibilities of engine repair. There have been many research works carried out so far regarding the materials, manufacturing techniques, geometrical shapes and reliability of engine pistons. Notwithstanding all these studies, there is a huge number of piston damage cases. This work is concerned with causes of piston damages and possibilities of early detections. Damaged piston of petrol and diesel engines in passenger and light duty cars have been analyzed. A compendium of case studies of damaged piston causes has been presented. The analysis of different types of damage mechanisms such as thermal and mechanical fatigue, seizure due to insufficient clearances, poor lubrication, overheating and damages due to abnormal combustion have been presented in this work. Faults of electronic control system, engine management malfunction, ignition-timing faults were recognized as the most frequent initial causes of piston damages. Possibilities of early diagnostics of particular causes of damages have been elaborated and presented in the context of total costs of repairs.

Opis:
The article describes the case of m/s "Józef Wybicki" coming across a mine. The result of explosion was numerous damages of deck devices as well as in the power station. Despite the lack of damages in the hull the unit was not capable of continuing the cruise. The photographs presented in the article show important damages caused by impact load. The elements such as the trunk of the electric engine, bearings of the lines of hoisting appliance's shafts etc. made of fragile materials are the most vulnerable to damages. Another cause of the damages was construction solutions of mounting the ship's equipment that were susceptible to impact load, e.g. retaining mounting of electric engines. Elements of ship construction makes its own kind wave guide through which the propagation of the energy inwards of the battleship follows. The character of the flow of the energy in construction ship is difficulty to qualify. The diffraction, refraction and interference of waves appear in elements of the ship. Except damages of elements performed from fragile materials the damage in nodes of connections of steel-elements appears.
W artykule przedstawiono przypadek wejścia na minę statku m/s "Józef Wybicki". Na skutek wybuchu nie kontaktowego wystąpiły rozliczne uszkodzenia zarówno w siłowni, jak i urządzeń pokładowych. Pomimo braku uszkodzeń kadłuba jednostka nie była zdolna do kontynuowania rejsu. Przedstawione w pracy wybrane zdjęcia obrazują istotne uszkodzenia powstałe w wyniku obciążenia udarowego. Najbardziej narażone na uszkodzenia były elementy wykonane z materiałów kruchych, takich jak korpusy silników elektrycznych, łożysk linii wałów wciągarek ładunkowych itp. Inną przyczyną występowania uszkodzeń były wrażliwe na obciążenia udarowe rozwiązania konstrukcyjne zamocowania wyposażenia okrętowego, zamocowania wspornikowe silników elektrycznych. Każdy z elementów konstrukcji okrętu stanowi swego rodzaju falowód, przez który następuje propagacja energii do wnętrza okrętu. Trudno jest określić charakter rozpływu energii w konstrukcji okrętu. W poszczególnych elementach występuje dyfrakcja, refrakcja oraz interferencja fal. Oprócz uszkodzeń elementów wykonanych z materiałów kruchych wystąpiły uszkodzenia w węzłach połączeń elementów stalowych.

The analysis of work of joints of tractors of models DT-YT allows to make the conclusion about presence of breakages because of low constructive strength and not correct definition of parameters of details. Probes of breakages of joints shows that today at designing of joints there is no system of the account of a mode of behavior and joint life cycle. Designing of threaded connections of automobile and tractor technics should be carried out taking into account modes and duration of operation of the car on these modes. Designing of threaded connections is carried out taking into account operation and life cycle modes. It is offered to carry out calculation taking into account accumulation of fatigue damages to a current of set time of operation. For definition of parameters of fatigue strength the technique of the accelerated tests is offered. The technique allows to define parameters of fatigue strength which it is necessary to use in calculations threaded connections. In work probes of a tension of joint of a driving wheel of a Caterpillar, are resulted by a method of the is finitely-element analysis. For probes settlement models are offered and tested. Settlement models allow to simplify construction of geometrical model for use in computer programs and calculations. Using the described technique of designing it is developed construction a retainer screw with a special thread.

The presented article is devoted to the problem of detection and localization of damages occurring in components of structures, which are made of hybrid composite materials. The subject of the work is a square plate consisting of a single layer made of aluminum alloy and several layers made of glass fibres (glass fabric) and epoxy resin. On the surface, which is made of composite, 12 piezoelectric elements are installed. These elements sequentially, one by one, generates a signal that is further recorded by the remaining piezoelectric elements. Picked up signal for the selected pair of activator – sensor is compared with the reference signal. The reference signal corresponds to the intact structure. This kind of approach is known as the pitch – catch configuration. In situations when the signal obtained for interrogated structure and reference one differs significantly, this may indicate that a damage exists between the activator and the sensor. Next, taking into account the information obtained from the other sensors, it is possible not only to detect but also to determine the approximate location of the flaw and to estimate its size. In order to visualize the obtained results, an especially dedicated software is developed according to the algorithms available in the literature – probability ellipse. Several computer simulations of wave propagation are performed using the finite element method. The proposed procedure is also tested experimentally. The presented approach makes it possible to detect both single and multiple damages.

The problem concerning the stress-strain state of a plate under impact load with various intensity levels of collision momentum applying finite-element method was considered. The paper presents a method of identification parameters of shaft line alignment and its influence on operational reliability of marine propulsion system. The discussion about shaft line parameters (bearings' reactions, bending moment and shear forces acting on crankshaft or gear box, and stresses distribution in the shaft line) which has an influence on marine propulsion system reliability was presented. Proper shaft line alignment is often a problem for repair shipyards, for aged ships without sufficient documentation. Some data can be draw by measurements; e.g. shaft line dimensions or intermediate bearings' reactions. Other data (stern tube bearing load, real axis of shaft line) have to be determined on the base of calculations. Author proposed combined experimental-analytical method for identified and optimization (correction) some existing parameters and checking power transmission system’s foundation. Specialised software (based on Finite Element Method) has been developed for shaft line alignment calculations. Main novelties of the software are elastic supports (model of bearings – boundary conditions) of the shaft line, continuous support as a model of stern tube bearing and influence coefficients calculations. An example analysis with discussion has been performed for cargo ships with medium-speed main engine. Multi-variant computations supported by measurements of the ships’ shaft line have been carried out. Changes in shaft line alignment have been proposed in order to increase reliability of propulsion system.
