The following article describes the effect of combustion chamber leakage of piston engine on the quality of its performance. To make a diagnosis of combustion chamber tightness, only such parameters were selected which are characterized by high information value and are closely connected with its defined structure. For this reason such connections are unmistakable, which results in making the right diagnosis of combustion chamber tightness of piston engines. Special attention was paid to the fact, what consequences, combustion chamber leakage, can cause to the piston engine performance. The most dangerous for the engine efficiency is the leakage of combustion chamber. The leakage of combustion chamber brings about the change of such engine parameters as pressure of suction, pressure of final compression and burning and the change of exhaust gases composition, which effect on the engine power and on fuel consumption. Condition of piston rings and their influence on gas pressure in combustion chamber has also been characterized. Pressure of gases taking place in engine cylinder and their connection with leakage of combustion chamber have also been described. The article also exposes random character of combustion pressure in engine cylinder. Besides, the errors of indicator diagrams together with mapping error position GMP have been mentioned too. Reliability of diagnostic parameters of technical condition of combustion piston engines obtained on the basis of developed indicator diagrams has been defined. Such diagram must be made on the basis of measurements and statistic analysis of pressure parameters in correctly adjusted engines, being in perfect technical condition, and not on the basis of measurements obtained in the engine test bench of a new engine. Bad technical condition, especially leaks in its cylinders causes power differences in engine arrangements, which endangers its safe exploitation.

The following article describes parameters of developed indicator diagrams concerning piston combustion engine of ship main propulsion, which can be used to assess its technical condition. To make a diagnosis of the engine combustion only such parameters should be selected which are characterized by high information value, being closely connected with its one defined structure. This is the cause why such connections are of unmistakable character, which allows to make the right diagnosis of technical condition of piston engine. Special attention was also paid to the consequences of diagnostic symptoms qualification from developed indicator diagrams of ship propulsion engine working in different conditions. Deflection of average indicated pressure caused by inappropriate engine performance could be caused by: 1) faulty adjustment of injection pump; 2) leaky combustion chamber, 3) bad technical condition of injection apparatus and the loading air system. Wrong technical condition of the engine caused by a leaky combustion chamber brings about a decrease of its performance. Untight combustion chamber causes the change of such parameters as, suction pressure, pressure of final compression and burning, as well as, the change of exhaust gases composition, which influences the power of the engine and fuel consumption. It has been mentioned what gas pressures of working process in engine cylinders are connected with an untight combustion chamber. Random character of burning pressure course in engine cylinder has also been paid attention to. Reliability of diagnostic parameters of piston engine technical condition received based on developed indicator diagrams have been determined. Diagnostic symptoms have been defined, basing on measurements and statistical analysis of pressure values in the cylinders of properly adjusted engines being in excellent technical condition and not based on measurements received in the engine test bed of a new engine.

The paper analyses the current offer of combustion pressure sensors for use on marine engines under operating conditions, methods of data acquisition, methods of determining TDC position and methods of obtaining diagnostic information from the indicator diagrams. Terms of continuous work on marine engines themselves only: new ABB cylinder pressure sensor, the piezoelectric sensors from KISTLER and AVL companies, but with limitations, the main ones being stability at high temperature. Another important issue for the accuracy of mean indicated pressure and heat released characteristics determination is referred to TDC position on the indicator diagrams. TDC is appropriate thermodynamic point, it is hardly determinable in the presence of interference and lack of sufficient information – but is used, for example in ABB solution. One of the sources of diagnostic information is to analyse trends in some parameters, which, unfortunately, is very difficult in environments with varying engine loads. Further progress in the diagnostic use of indicator diagrams should be associated with the use of the heat released characteristics and the net internal efficiency, which as shown by the results of preliminary tests can be used to assess the accuracy of the injection and combustion of fuel, including gas fuel. Supplementing these methods may be the use of vibration and noise to detect certain malfunctions.

This article applies to searching for symptoms and diagnostic parameters pointing in a deterioration in the quality of the combustion process in marine diesel engines. It was assumed that diagnostic parameters should give clear information regardless of engine load or with respect to the mean indicated pressure. The proposed cycle and sectional net thermal (heat) efficiency characteristics and also dimensionless net heat release rate were analysed. In order to obtain the state of deterioration of the injection process simulation of discalibration (larger diameter) of injector holes was performed. The simulation was carried out by the enlarged of diameter of the injector holes form 0.375 mm to 0.385 mm. Deterioration of the formation and growth of fuel spray droplet diameter is result of such simulation. The study was conducted on a laboratory engine Sulzer Al25/30. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the selected engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Measurements of pressure of combustion were performed by means of tensometric sensors of Spice Company on the indicator valve. In this paper, the authors present an introduction to the new method of evaluating the indicator diagram of internal combustion engine. For several years, it was observed that analyses of combustion processes have been hardly changed since they were conducted for the first time. At the moment, the diagrams are plotted more and more precisely owing to the new sensors and digital processors. Despite all of these high technical advantages, which were obviously unavailable in the past, theoretical approach for describing indicator diagram has not changed in significant way. Nowadays, the indicator diagrams are still evaluated very generally and are presented in much too idealistic way as a smooth curve of pressure changes, without any disturbances, which are being detected very easily now. Furthermore, it appears that performance improvements of the IC engines are in need of developing new methods for analysis and evaluation. The Fourier transform is a new way to look at the combustion process in the engines. It is basically a mathematical instrument for analysing different types of signals, which are transformed, from time domain into frequency domain. It enables identifying specific sinusoidal components of arbitrary signals and separates relevant ones from the noise. This allows one to see significant differences in two or more apparently similar signals and detect the crucial parts. If we treat pressure changes in time like a common signal, we can compute Fourier transform and see basic components of the diagram.

The results of investigation of 1,9 TDI engine (285 Nm, 85 kW, type AJM without any modification) equipped with injection units supplied conventional diesel fuel (ON) or B100 fuel (RME) have been presented in article. Investigations have been realized at the engine speed of 2000 rpm and variable load within the range of 0 to 275 Nm. The pressure, temperature and heat release velocity runs have been subjected to analysis. Particular attention has been paid to the release of the heat used for the effective work and internal energy increase of the working medium (enthalpy) during combustion inside the engine cylinder versus the crank angle for both investigated fuels. It was found among the others that mentioned fuels differ in the heat release, heat velocity and the maximal combustion temperature, which for the B100 fuel is bigger than for the conventional diesel fuel. Bigger combustion dynamics of tested biofuel (compared with standard diesel fuel) results higher concentrations of Nitrogen Oxides NOx in exhaust gases. The easiest way is of course the use of the later start of fuel injection biofuels and/or increase the exhaust gas recirculation EGR. These treatments, however, result in a worsening of the energy performance of the engine. It was concluded also that the combustion of RME works properly at higher engine loads. Then reduce the negative difference between the combustion of biofuel (RME) and standard Diesel fuel.

The article presents selected issues concerning the modelling of the supply chain in the evaluation of the efficiency of tasks realization. In the process of determination, efficiency of the functioning of the supply chain it is necessary to determine the components of both the effects and expenditures in quantitative terms. It is assumed that the effect resulting from action taken depends on the problem under consideration, for example, the result may be the amount of the profits, savings resulting from implemented solutions or measurable improvement of the quality system, expressed e.g. percentage. While the outlay incurred for the implementation of the action is, in general, the expense of implementing this action. The article pointed out that the assessment of the efficiency can be used to decide on the choice of a decision of the many variants of solutions to the problem. In this respect, important are indicators of the efficiency both the technical, economic, quality, and organizational. In the article were also presented possible approaches to improve the efficiency of the supply chain. In the problems of assessing efficiency of functioning of systems with a complex functional structure such as supply, chains increasingly are applicable algorithms based on the so-called heuristics. Hence, in the article briefly have been characterized also chosen heuristic algorithms – genetic algorithms.

The paper presents methods for processing and analysis of in-cylinder pressure course in the combustion chamber of marine engines. In literature are described determinate methods ofmean indicator pressure from closed diagrams, with are but rarely recorded than developed diagrams. There have been showed on limitations occurrence at measurements fast-changed pressures of marine diesel engines in operating conditions and measuring errors the attendants. Mean indicated pressure determined from the indicated timing or angular pressure courses in the cylinders is still a reliable diagnostic symptom. The paper presents too the results of experimental measurement of in-cylinder pressure signals, medium speed marine engines with application resistive sensor and using the photo-optical sensor of crankshaft position, and without the marker position of the crankshaft. Not always possible to altach the marker for the position of the crankshaft, and even there is no way of stopping the engine when you need to diagnose it. The top dead centre of the piston can be determined then analytically. The work developed a method of determining the mean indicated pressure of the developed indicator diagrams. Based on calculations ofmean indicator pressure made many of diagnosis of the medium speed marine diesel engines in the operating conditions.

The topic of this article is to analyze the influence of indicator diagrams smoothing methods on diagnostic parameters determined on their basis such as the maximum combustion pressure, mean indication pressure and heat release characteristics. Indicator diagrams of marine engines are subject to serious distortions arising primarily from the measuring method for in-cylinder pressure. Measurements are performed on the indicator valve which connect with the combustion chamber through the indicator channel. Depending on the engine design the channel length can reach a considerable length and introduces significant distortion in both the phase and amplitude of the pressure signal. Further analysis of the indicator diagram eg. in order to determine the heat release characteristics requires the use of methods of smoothing and filtering of interference. The results confirm no effect of indicator diagram smoothing for the value of the mean indicated pressure, which is one for the most important indicated parameters. A significant influence of smoothing on the maximum value of the heat release rate was observed. The differences in this case exceed 50%. At the same time confirmed that the heat release rate curve determined on the basis of a diagram without smoothing, carry a high level of interference, which precludes their practical use. Smoothing allows getting heat release rate curves that carry vital information about the working process of the engine.

Paper presents the methodology of shaping dependability of devices used in process with use key performance indicators for increasing Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) which are a subject of devices' parameters monitoring under operation. Value of Overall Equipment Efficiency describes the technical state of devices included into production process. Value itself can be different for different production lines even in one industry. For engineers it is important to put all possible effort to increasing values of particular key performance indicators which are building Overall Equipment Efficiency. Values of particular key performance indicators, shows to experienced engineer real technical state of whole production line. Presented in paper selected indicators are connected and have influence for each other, moreover operation parameters of devices' are characterizing production process. Key performance indicators presented in paper represents three the most important aspects of the production process: handling of the process, operators' area of responsibility, management of the process, managers' area of responsibility and optimization of the process, planners' area of responsibility. Only proper cooperation of these three groups of people can benefits requested result. From owners point of view, presented areas have the same importance, problems created in one of them can negatively influence for overall income of whole enterprise.

The paper presents the results of research of the influence of clogged injector nozzles in fuel injection system on the shape of heat release characteristics. The study was conducted on a laboratory four-stroke marine engine, type Sulzer 3Al 25/30, with nominal power Ne = 408 kW at nominal rotational speed n = 750 rpm. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Simulation of loss of patency of injector nozzles (clogged) was to completely clog two holes of nine injection injector nozzle holes with a diameter of 0,325 mm. Measurements were made at a constant engine speed of 750 rev/min for five loads: 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kW. Measurements of pressure of combustion were performed by means of tensometric sensors of Spice Company. Based on measured pressure curves heat release characteristics were determined. The algorithm allows the determination of net heat release rate q and the net generated heat Q characteristics. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that significant improvement in the diagnostic use of indicator diagrams can be obtained by using heat release characteristics. These characteristics are correlated with the process of fuel injection and the injection pump operation. As demonstrated in the work of analysing the heat release rate q, it is possible to infer diagnosis on the technical condition of the fuel injection system.

The paper aims to present the results of investigations into the engine with Common Rail system that performs multi-phase injection. The scope of investigations included measurements and assessment of fast-changing quantities. The paper provides the research stand description and a block diagram o f the system for taking measurements offast-changing quantities, including the system measuring the intensity of the current that controls the injector operation. The experimental results discussed in the paper were derived from introductory investigations into measurements of the air-fuel mixture pressure in the engine cylinder and those of the injector needle lift, which were assessed on the basis of measurements of the intensity of the injector-controlling current. Tests were performed while the engine operated under external speed characteristics and under load characteristics at the crankshaft rotational speed n=l200 rpm and n =3800 rpm. During tests, depending on speed and load characteristics of the engine operation, the ECU performed different strategies of fuel injection. The fuel injection control system madę it possible to complete three injection stages in a single work cycle of the internal combustion engine (pilot injection, pre-injection and the main injection). The maximum fuel pressure in the common rail amounted to 160 MPa. The engine was fuelled by commercial diesel oil.

An object of the paper is a novel method of effective heat release coefficient appointing during combustion process of the based on the real indicator diagram. The process quality of the heat release during process of combustion is evaluated by value of the effective heat release coefficient. Accepted assumptions at appointing effective coefficient of heat release refer to acceptable that thermodynamical parameters of the working charge according to points of the real indicator diagram and the computational diagram are such the same, the maximum pressure of real working cycle of the engine is equal to the pressure of the computational cycle, work of the working charge performed in period from point of closing of the inlet valve to point of the beginning of the exhaust process are for both considered working cycles equal, heat values of the carried to the real and computational cycle are such the same. The method of appointing of the self-ignition delay period is presented in the paper, using to this end intersection point of two graphs of temperature course of the working charge prepared for the first phase of combustion process. Other methods appointing characteristics is suggested in paper basing on the real indicator diagram. The graphic illustration of the preparing method of characteristics of the relative quantity of the heat release during combustion process is illustrated in paper.

The paper describes the problems of mean indicated pressure determination and the piston TDC (Top Dead Centre) position impact on this parameter in marine diesel engines. Mean indicated pressure Pi is one of the most important diagnostic parameters of marine engines. On the basis of its parameter, the assessment of the technical condition of each cylinder as well as the regulation of injection equipment can be made. Most of the available electronic indicators enable automatic calculation of mean indicated pressure on the basis of progress indicator diagram. As the research shows the greatest impact on the accuracy of the designation mean indicated pressure has errors of piston TDC position. These errors can be significant and therefore this may lead to engine misdiagnosis. The actual piston TDC correction methods were discussed, and they justified the need of their use in marine engines, despite the wide use of methods of determining the angular position of the crankshaft. The original method of TDC correction based on the model of curve of the compression with the exponent of a polynomial was introduced. The proposed method of TDC correction has been verified for a different types of marine engines.

The actual TDC piston correction methods were discussed, and were justified the need of their use in marine engines, despite the wide use of methods of determining the angular position of the crankshaft. The original method of TDC correction based on the model of curve of the compression with the exponent of a polynomial was introduced. The proposed method of TDC correction has been verified for different types of marine engines.
