    Opis:
    In the springtime of 2005, 16 blackberry cultivars were planted in the Experimental Pomological Orchard in Skierniewice. They included the new blackberry cultivars: ‘Black Butte’, ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Chester’, ‘Helen’, ‘Karaka Black’, ‘Kotata’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Oregon’, ‘Silvan’, ‘Tayberry’, Tayberry Buckingham’ and ‘Tummel’. The new cultivars were compared with two standard blackberry varieties ‘Orkan’ and ‘Black Satin’. In the course of the experiment the varieties were tested in the climatic conditions of central Poland, with special attention paid to yield and fruit quality. All the varieties except ‘Tayberry Buckingham’ were found very promising; the plants, however, have to be protected from frosts typical during Polish winters. The highest yields were recorded for ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Loch Tay’. The largest fruits were produced by ‘Black Butte’. Although the Rubus hybrids: ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Tayberry’ and ‘Tummel’ are marked by low yields, they are interesting due to their original taste and fruit colour.

    Opis:
    Changes in the levels of starch, sucrose and fructose in the roots of strawberry tray plants (cv. ‘Elsanta’) as affected by the duration of the gro wing period (8, 12, 18 or 20 weeks) were examined. Measurements of air temperature during the growing period were used to calculate cumulative chilling hours (<7 ̊ C). The largest accumulation of starch in the roots was found in the plants grown for 20 weeks , which was associated with the increased amount of chilling received by this group of plants (707 h). The lowest amount of starch was recorded in the roots of tray plants cultivated for 8 weeks (this group of plants had not been exposed to chilling temper atures at all). After storage ( - 1.5 to - 2 ̊ C in a cooling chamber) no starch and low concentrations of soluble carbohydrates (sucrose and fructose) were detected in the roots of the plants which had not been exposed to chilling (cultivated for 8 weeks). Als o, post - storage vigour and productivity were the lowest in this group of plants. There were no differences in fruit yield between the plants cultivated for 12, 18 or 20 weeks.

    Opis:
    New sour - cherry cultivars of German breeding were assessed for their usefulness for cultivation in the climatic conditions of central Poland. The study was conducted in the Experimental Or chard in D ą browice near Skierniewice over the years 2001 - 2009. The experimental material consisted of trees of the cultivars: ‘Morina’, ‘Safir’, ‘Topas’, ‘Karneol’, ‘Korund’ and ‘Vowi’, which were compared with two control (standard) cultivars: ‘ Ł utówka IR - 2’ and ‘Groniasta z Ujfehertoi’. The largest trunk cross - sectional area (TCSA) after nine years of growth in the orchard was attained by sour - cherry trees cv. ‘Karneol’. Strong growth was also shown by the trees of cv. ‘Korund’. Sour - cherry trees of cvs. ‘Vowi’, ‘Topas’ and ‘Safir’ did not differ in their growth vigour from ‘ Ł utówka’. The trees of cv. ‘Morina’ were notable for their good health throughout the whole period of the study. Cumulative yields obtained from all the cultivars under assessment over the period 2003 - 2009 were lower than the yields produced by the trees of cv. ‘ Ł utówka’, although in the case of the cultivar ‘Safir’ the difference was not statistically significant. The worst yielding, irrespective of the year, were the trees of cv. ‘Kar neol’. It should be emphasized, however, that this cultivar was distinguished by the largest fruits. ‘Korund’, ‘Topas’ and ‘Safir’ also produced larger fruits than the two control cultivars. The smallest fruits were collected from the trees of cvs. ‘Vowi’ and ‘Morina’.
