Opis:
The distribution of 137Cs, 152Eu, and 85Sr in a solid/aqueous system, gypsum in contact with groundwater, was investigated using gamma-spectrometry. The sorption and migration of the radionuclides were investigated. The aqueous phase was characterized using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The solid phases were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The investigations included three kinds of gypsum: mineral, commercial, and own prepared gypsum. The influence of some parameters on sorption/migration of the radionuclides were studied, such as contact time, pH, and concentrations of concurrent elements. The effect of element concentration was also investigated. The results show the ability of gypsum to keep Sr and Eu in the solid phase in all three cases. The incorporation of Cs in the solid phase depends on the conditions and used materials, and varies between 93 and 97%.

Opis:
Composites consisting of natural phosphate powder and two monomers (styrene or methyl styrene) have been prepared by means of gamma irradiation. The polymerization reaction was followed up using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) to determine the conversion of the polymerization. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to locate and determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the prepared samples. The distribution of 137Cs, 152Eu, 85Sr and 238U in a solid-aqueous system, composites of phosphate-poly(methyl styrene) and of phosphate-polystyrene in contact with groundwater, was investigated using alfa-spectrometry and fluorometry. The effects of contact time, pH, and the concentration of concurrent element (Ca) were studied. The results were compared with earlier results with phosphate alone in the solid phase. The ability of the produced composites to keep the studied radioisotopes in the solid phase is much higher than in the mineral phosphate. This improvement is more remarkable for strontium and cesium than for europium and uranium, due to their high element ratio in the solid phase in phosphate experiments.

A numerical method is presented for evaluation of the radial diffusion coefficient, based on the full orbit modelling of particle orbits in the tokamak geometry. The code solves the full orbit equations of motion for a set of test particles in an arbitrary equilibrium magnetic field. The effect of Coulomb collisions of test ions with background plasma particles is simulated by means of an equivalent Monte Carlo collision operator which scatters the pitch angle as well as the gyrophase of the particle. The radial diffusion coefficient is estimated by calculating the temporal dependence of the mean-square displacement of an ensemble of monoenergetic test particles. As an illustration of the method the effect of magnetic islands on the impurity collisional transport is studied. It is shown that in presence of m = 2, n = 1 resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) the diffusion coefficient for the tungsten ions (W28+, E = 1 keV) can increase by a factor of 5-10.

We propose an extension of the numerical method to model effect of Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) observed in hadronization processes which allows for calculations not only the correlation functions C2(Qinv) (onedimensional), but also the corresponding C2(Qx,y,z) (i.e., three-dimensional). The method is based on the bunching of identical bosonic particles in elementary emitting cells (EEC) in phase space in a manner leading to proper Bose- Einstein form of distribution of energy (this was enough to calculate C2(Qinv)). To obtain C2(Qx,y,z) as well as one has to add to it the symmetrization of the multiparticle wave function to properly correlate space-time locations of produced particles with their energy-momentum characteristics.

Opis:
Testing Si3N4 membrane windows is a preliminary research for the single-ion-single-cell irradiating programme prepared at the Cracow nuclear microprobe facility. The present investigation is concerned with finding a method to register every single particle of the microprobe beam when passing through a membrane to the atmosphere. The 200 nm thick membranes covered with different layers were investigated. The alpha particles, after passing the membrane window, were registered by a particle detector. Secondary electrons ejected from the membrane by alpha particles were registered by a channeltron. The channeltron signals were collected in coincidence with the silicon detector signals. The detection efficiency is the ratio of the fast coincident channeltron signal number to the total number of the silicon detector signals. The results of investigation of the membranes with different coverages are reported in the present work.

Results of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and microscopic studies on simple microorganisms, brewing yeasts, are presented. Lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) were found to change from 2.4 to 2.9 ns (longer-lived component) for lyophilized and aqueous yeasts, respectively. Also hygroscopicity of yeasts in time was examined, allowing to check how water – the main component of the cell – affects PALS parameters, thus lifetime of o-Ps were found to change from 1.2 to 1.4 ns (shorter-lived component) for the dried yeasts. The time sufficient to hydrate the cells was found below 10 hours. In the presence of liquid water, an indication of reorganization of yeast in the molecular scale was observed. Microscopic images of the lyophilized, dried, and wet yeasts with best possible resolution were obtained using inverted microscopy (IM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) methods. As a result, visible changes to the surface of the cell me mbrane were observed in ESEM images.

Opis:
The J-PET detector being developed at the Jagiellonian University is a positron emission tomograph composed of the long strips of polymer scintillators. At the same time, it is a detector system that will be used for studies of the decays of positronium atoms. The shape of photomultiplier signals depends on the hit time and hit position of the gamma quantum. In order to take advantage of this fact, a dedicated sampling front-end electronics that enables to sample signals in voltage domain with the time precision of about 20 ps and novel reconstruction method based on the comparison of examined signal with the model signals stored in the library has been developed. As a measure of the similarity, we use the Mahalanobis distance. The achievable position and time resolution depend on the number and values of the threshold levels at which the signal is sampled. A reconstruction method as well as preliminary results are presented and discussed.

Opis:
In this paper, we present prospects for using the Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (J-PET) detector to search for discrete symmetries violations in a purely leptonic system of the positronium atom. We discuss tests of CP and CPT symmetries by means of ortho-positronium decays into three photons. No zero expectation values for chosen correlations between ortho-positronium spin and momentum vectors of photons would imply the existence of physics phenomena beyond the standard model. Previous measurements resulted in violation amplitude parameters for CP and CPT symmetries consistent with zero, with an uncertainty of about 10−3. The J-PET detector allows to determine those values with better precision, thanks to the unique time and angular resolution combined with a high geometrical acceptance. Achieving the aforementioned is possible because of the application of polymer scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of annihilation quanta.

Opis:
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) collaboration is developing a prototype time of flight (TOF)-positron emission tomograph (PET) detector based on long polymer scintillators. This novel approach exploits the excellent time properties of the plastic scintillators, which permit very precise time measurements. The very fast fi eld programmable gate array (FPGA)-based front-end electronics and the data acquisition system, as well as low- and high-level reconstruction algorithms were specially developed to be used with the J-PET scanner. The TOF-PET data processing and reconstruction are time and resource demanding operations, especially in the case of a large acceptance detector that works in triggerless data acquisition mode. In this article, we discuss the parallel computing methods applied to optimize the data processing for the J-PET detector. We begin with general concepts of parallel computing and then we discuss several applications of those techniques in the J-PET data processing.
