    The article takes about possibilities of Internal benchmarking application in a mining company. An analysis of two different underground roadway development scenarios was held out including recommended technological solutions that improve the proceedings.

    Opis:
    Purpose: This paper raises theoretical issues related to the functioning of cities that are determined as smart in order to find a better operational definition for further research. Design/methodology/approach: In search of the essence of the term, the paper refers to variety of definitions of smart city, and also to the theoretical models in operation enabling the measurement and comparison of indicators among urban areas in the different world locations. The analysis was performed on three rankings: Cities in Motion Index, Mercer Quality of Living, Arcadis The Sustainable Index. Findings: The conclusions indicate that the Smart City concept is connected with sustainable development more than to the quality of life. The city rankings concerning the highest life quality is completely different from the hierarchy of smart cities. Originality/value: The paper extends the definition of smart city and it may be valuable for researchers who develop the concept of smart city in their research.

    Benchmarking stanowi metodę poszukiwania najlepszych wzorców i używania ich we własnym działaniu. W procesie doskonalenia zajęć konieczna jest analiza procesu edukacyjnego, pozwalająca na wskazanie obszarów poprawy. Celem badania było poznanie opinii studentów o jakości kształcenia i możliwości doskonalenia zajęć z wykorzystaniem platformy e-learningowej. Na podstawie literatury oraz własnych doświadczeń popartych wynikami badania ankietowego przeprowadzonego wśród studentów, uzasadniono potrzebę usprawniania e-learningu w procesie nauczania na uczelni publicznej.
    Benchmarking is a method of finding the best patterns and using them in your own actions. In the process of improving the classes, it is necessary to analyze the educational process and to identify areas of improvement. The aim of the study has been to get acquainted with the students' opinion about the quality of education and the possibility of improving the classes using the e-learning platform. Based on the literature review and the authors’ experience supported by the results of a survey conducted among students, the necessity of improving e-learning in the teaching process at the public university was justified.

    Purpose: The aim of this elaboration has been to get to know the opinions of students on benchmarking, its practical application and a possibility of improving the classes. Design/methodology/approach: With the applicable literature and own experience supported with the results of a preliminary (pilot) survey questionnaire performed among students, a need to facilitate public higher education provider’s classes was justified. Findings: The results of the study justify the use of benchmarking in the process of education in management, management and production engineering as well as finance and accounting programmes. Research limitations/implications: The considerations covered in this elaboration determine further directions of theoretical and practical studies. Interesting research problems are e.g. the benefits of using benchmarking, management system improvement, the role of the measurement system and reporting of accomplishments in benchmarking. Originality/value: Benchmarking, as a research tool, is an important source of information indispensable for an adequate operation and development of the organisation. The multi-dimensionality of the tool allows its application both to evaluate the entire organisation for respective results accomplished, and the processes, procedures, standards, etc.

    Benchmarking is a modern method of management that creates opportunity to improve, measure and compare own results with the leader’s results and then to describe its various forms. The author emphasizes the importance of information being a valuable resource of the company and at the same time being the basis for applying the benchmarking method. It is worthwhile noting that not all information that reachesthe organization is useful. Therefore, the need to analyze and evaluate information becomes more and more important. In this work, the methods of obtaining information directly and indirectly have been distinguished. In the last part of the work, the concept of "business intelligence" was explained and various variants of it were listed and explained. The problem of economic espionage and methods that can be used by people who want to obtain data for benchmarking was also outlined. However, it is worth noting that both concepts of business intelligence and economic espionage share a very thin border.

    Benchmarking to instrument, który umożliwia doskonalenie działań, opierając się na osiągnięciach liderów. Dzięki aplikacji odpowiednich rozwiązań możliwe jest porównywanie wykonywania pewnych działań zarówno leczniczych, jak i organizatorskich, a wynik takiej analizy może być podstawą do podjęcia przez kierownika optymalnej, dla jego placówki lub oddziału, decyzji. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości wykorzystania benchmarkingu w zarządzaniu szpitalem publicznym oraz jego wpływu na efektywność zarządzania szpitalem. Przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące występujących zależności między stosowaniem banchmarkingu a wynikami ekonomicznymi jednostki.
    Benchmarking is an instrument which enables improving actions using leader’s achievements. Duet to the application of relevant programs, it is possible to compare the performance of some actions, both medical and organizational. The results of this analysis might become the basis of a manager’s optimal decision concerning their facility or ward. The aim of this article is to present possibilities of benchmarking in public hospital management with a particular emphasis put on its influence on the effectiveness of managers’ taking up actions. It presents the results of the research which shows dependence between banchmarking and economic indicators of hospitals.

    The article presents the trial of benchmarking containing organisation, technology, quality, enviromental protection, health and safety at work in mines of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (Poland) and Ostravsko Karvinské Doly (Czech Republic) located in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. On the basis of research, there have been chosen best practices which could be implemented in other mining enterprises in order to improve their efficiency.

    Współczesne przedsiębiorstwa funkcjonują w warunkach bardzo silnej konkurencji i szybko dokonujących się, a przy tym często nieprzewidywalnych, zmian w otoczeniu. Muszą więc dysponować odpowiednim instrumentarium, które pozwoliłoby prawnie zarządzać. Potrzeba ta sprzyja z kolei rozwojowi różnorodnych koncepcji, metod czy technik organizacji i zarządzania. Problemem staje się pełna znajomość tych narzędzi, odpowiedni ich dobór, przygotowanie do wprowadzenia do praktyki, sprawne wdrożenie wykorzystywanie. Trudność z doborem będących w dyspozycji koncepcji czy metod wynika z faktu, iż są one wykorzystywane w różnych obszarach funkcjonowania przesiębiorstwa. Szczególnie szeroki zestaw metod mamy do dyspozycji w przypadku urządzania produkcją czy logistyką. Dlatego też właśnie tym problemom poświęcono w artykul najwięcej uwagi.
    Contemporary enterprises operate in very strong competitive conditions and in rapidly taking place unpredictable changes in the nvironment. And therefore they need the appropriate instrumentation which would enable efficient management. The need in turn encourages the development of various concepts, methods or techniques of organization and management. The problem is complete knowledge of these tools, their proper selection, preparation for practice, effective implementation and exploitation. The difficulty with the selection of the available concepts or methods derives from the fact that they are used in different business areas of the enterprise. Especially, a broad set of methods we have available for production management and logistics. Therefore, these problems are discussed iv in the article.

    Jedną z metod zarządzania jednostkami samorządu terytorialnego jest benchmarking, który umożliwia doskonalenie organizacji na zasadzie uczenia się od najlepszych. Może być skutecznie stosowany przez różne typy organizacji, w zasadzie we wszystkich obszarach ich funkcjonowania. To powoduje, że metoda ta jest często wykorzystywana w zarządzaniu organizacjami. W artykule podjęto rozważania na temat roli benchmarkingu w ocenie zarządzania strategicznego samorządów lokalnych. Na tle wybranych aspektów teoretycznych opisywanego zagadnienia przeprowadzono analizę benchmarkingową w zakresie oceny działań strategicznych samorządów lokalnych w Polsce.
    One of the methods for managing local government units is benchmarking, which allows the improvement of the organization on the principle of learning from the best. It can be used with success by various types of organisations basically in all areas of their functioning. This causes that this method is often used in management of organizations. The article elaborates on the role of benchmarking in the evaluation of strategic management of local governments. Against the background of some theoretical aspects of the described issues conducted a benchmarking exercise in the evaluation of strategic activities of local governments in Poland.
