The article discusses the question of political implications of French feminist theories, also known as feminist avant-garde. Referring to the strategic re-reading of the concept French Feminism by Christine Delphy, it is argued that such projects as écriture féminine have been appropriated by postmodern Anglo-American critique, which tends to fetishize the strategies of displacement and aestheticization of the political field. The aim of the article is to examine whether contemporary feminist theories can take up the challenge of French feminist avant-garde by going back to its political roots.

W niniejszym artykule autorka rozważa zjawisko bezforemności rozumiane najpierw jako pojęcie filozoficzne (koncepcja Georgesa Bataille’a), a następnie jako kategoria estetyczna (malarstwo informel, teatr Taduesza Kantora, literatura Leo Lipskiego). Rozważania są prowadzone z perspektywy „krytyki afektywnej”. Autorka analizuje znaczenie, funkcje i postaci, które przybiera bezformie w różnych pracach artystycznych. Następnie rozpatruje awangardowe zainteresowanie tym, co bezforemne jako przejaw poszukiwania i konsty-tuowania „alternatywnej” nowoczesności.
In the following article the author considers a formlessness phenomenon which, at first, is understood as a philosophical term (Georges Bataille’s concept), then as aesthetic category (informel painting, Tadeusz Kantor's theatre, Leo Lipski's literature). Commentary is conducted from the perspective of ‘affective criticism’. The author analyses meaning, function and figures which formlessness becomes in different artistic works. Then, the author examines avant-garde interest in formlessness as a manifestation of search and establishment of ‘alternative’ modernity.

The paper shows Natalia Lach-Lachowicz (Natalia LL) as a neo avant-garde artist whose works in a specific maximalistic way are very close to the main currents of avant-garde trends: newmediality (photograph), minimalism, conceptualism, performance, bodyart, pop-art and feminist art. The paper concentrates mainly on the mutual influencing features of conceptualism, consumptionism and feminism in Natalia LL’s works and pays attention to the emancipational potential of her works of the 70s and 80s.

The paper addresses two main issues: the first relates to modern hearing and the phenomenon of a new understanding of sound in the world of modernity, the second - as a consequence - to the repercussions of the auditory experience in the works of representatives of the first avantgarde. The author, following various examples of avant-garde manifestations of “language-noise” (including the works of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Luigi Russolo, artists of Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich), points out that they reveal the compulsion to hear, to be in sound-noise. He highlights the special importance of early European avant-garde movements (such as Futurism and Dadaism) in the process of restoring the proper sound potential to language (and literature) and at the same time refers to the new understanding of literature in the context of the modern soundscape.

This article attempts to answer the question of whether we can describe contemporary poetry as avant-garde? The author recognizes problems associated with defining the avant-garde as a historical phenomenon and proposes - resorting to Marjorie Perloff ’s concepts - a new way of interpreting contemporary poetry as an arrière-garde reconstruction of avant-garde poetics. The oeuvre of Andrzej Sosnowski is analyzed as an interesting example of how the strategy of unoriginality can be incorporated into a new model of arrière-garde poetics.

The text refers to the surrealist invention of automatic writing examined in the anthropological and historical perspective. The aim of the article is to show the relationships of automatic writing with other non-literary cultural practices, especially graphological and spiritualistic. These practices explore the unconscious, strictly individual components of writing, aimed at revealing the social and psychological truth about the subject. They are also to show the domain of what is rejected by modern rationalism. In this article I want to show that the link between modernity, the avant-garde and the subconsciousness or superconsciousness is a complex epistemic fight with modern political and social administration that goes beyond the field of art to the field of broadly understood culture.

This article reviews the various ways in which Julian Przyboś dealt with genre conventions in his poetry. He used old forms of prose poetry, reworked the convention of hymn, ode and sonnet, wrote lullabies and rhymes, and, as one of the first poetry writers, brought the non-literary genres into poetry (letter, menu, postcard, note). Przyboś is also a prolific author of articles published in periodicals, prefaces and afterwords in books by other authors, or texts included in joint publications, many of which were forgotten or scattered. Through recalling these mostly concise publications a fuller reconstruction of Przyboś’s attitude to genre conventions is enabled and helps to track the generic evolution of the avant-garde poet. Also, a new perspective is provided by reviewing the poet’s home archive, which has been kept by his wife thus far. The poet paid attention to form consciously constructed structure to his compositions, with precision and scrupulousness, forming complex, though apparently simple constructions. The hesitation accompanying the classification of some of the notes only confirms the innovative character of his poetry, putting forward new forms, which undertake the game with tradition and exploit the richness of modern Polish.

Under the common denomination of Cuban avant-garde, the present article gathers texts of versatile subject matters and poetics: Regino Pedroso’s “Salutación fraterna del taller mecánico” (1927), Manuel Navarro Luna’s Surco (1928), Mariano Brull’s Poemas en menguante (1928) and Ramón Guirao’s Bailadora de rumba (1928). Nevertheless, all of them are characterised by the same avant-garde attitude consisting in searching for novelty and, above all, they reveal a similar “structure of feeling” (Williams 1977). The euphoria, proper for the first decades of independence (always controlled by the “the giant with seven-league boots”) was replaced by confusion and disorientation experienced after the economic depression of 1920, disagreement with corruption, clientelism and other blights on the Republic’s political life, and with the idea of modernity reduced to material progress. The article studies the ways in which modern avant-garde Cuban literature gains insights into objective factors of modernity. It also aims at explaining why Cuban avant-garde writers, instead of internalizing modern fantasies and dreams (Berman 1988), try to generate compensatory constructions which pretend to abolish them (Cros 1997).

At the end of the 1920s Aleksander Wat quits publishing his literary texts and focuses on editorial and journalistic activity thus developing the model of a romantic "rigorist of action" created by Adam Mickiewicz. The purpose of this article is, first of all, to compare the ideological postulates of Mickiewicz and Wat regarding the relationship between language and action, as well as to demonstrate the convergence of their social and political background. Secondly - I will examine the journalistic activity of Wat from the period of “Miesięcznik Literacki” (1929–1930): analyze his critique of Futurism (as too “literary” and only apparently engaged) and a new formula of non-fiction (presented in essays devoted to the social role of reportage).

The paper challenges the common view within the history of Polish literature that schematically places women’s poetry outside modernism and avant-garde. The authoress employs the concept of neo-avant-garde to characterize the so-far omitted poetic projects by women, dismissed to date as marginal or “quasi-avant-garde”. In the article, she demonstrates ways in which Julia Fiedorczuk’s intellectual, self-reflexive and experimental poetry draws upon and refashions the avant-garde tradition.

The paper is an attempt to outline a few problems connected with economic modes of reading the historic avant-garde, mainly its poetry. The author recapitulates a short history of its studies based on symbolic economies in order to consider possible semantic differences, resulting in the various uses of economic analogy in the discourse of the first avant-garde. The article focuses on Futurist and Constructivists movements, trying to sketch conflicts between political commitment and artistic autonomy, possible economies of sign and some sources of the “economic imagination”.
