Opis:
Most methods used for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials contribute to the increasing amount of waste solvents. An environmentally friendly solution of this issue is the utilization of “green” procedures for a large-scale production of materials such as mechanochemical synthesis. Although, the beginnings of mechanochemistry date back to ancient times, it nowadays experiences a renaissance and attracts a lot of attention. Recently, mechanochemistry has been successfully implemented for the synthesis of diverse carbonaceous materials, i.e., activated carbons, ordered mesoporous carbons, graphene-based materials and carbon nanotubes, the usage of which ranges from adsorption, catalysis to environmental and energy storage applications. Undoubtedly, it becomes quite universal and powerful synthesis method. Hence, a review summarizing the current accomplishments in this field is needed.

Opis:
Polyamides have found a number of applications in the commercial sector. These materials belong to a large group of chemical compounds - polymers. The interest in these polymers is still growing as new materials can be formed through chemical functionalization or simply addition of different nanomaterials. Polyamides have many unique properties (e.g. chemical resistance, tensile and abrasion resistance, high thermal stability, non-flammability and high mechanical strength even after long periods of use), and compounds such as Nylon® or Kevlar® are leading components in the production of textiles, laboratory equipment, everyday objects or structural elements. Polyamides are used in automotive industry, aviation, and even as protective materials for the military. Several methods to synthesize polyamides exists to date. The most popular are reactions between carboxylic acid chlorides and amines, polycondensation of carboxylic acids with amines or polycondensation of amino acids. Especially spectacular is a reaction of pulling polyamide thread from the liquid-liquid interface known as the "nylon rope trick" experiment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6asCwVG8zU). Here, the reaction between 1,6-diaminohexane dissolved in the aqueous phase and adipoyl chloride being present in the immiscible with water organic phase is fast and spontaneous. In this work, we have proved that the synthesis of the polyamides at the liquid-liquid interface can be controlled using electrochemistry. In this respect, the electrochemically driven interfacial ion transfer or electrochemically modulated local pH changes are used to trigger the polycondensation within the locus defined by the liquid-liquid interface. The introduction to the electrified soft junction and its modification with polyamide is discussed in the concerned work.

Opis:
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells are now attracting a lot of attention among battery scientists and engineers due to their potential for replace current Li-ion technologies as ta main energy storage chemistry. It is well known that Li-S cells operate according to a significantly different mechanisms as compared to Li-ion chemistries. In particular, upon discharge the sulfur species undergo a set of complex electrochemical transitions starting from elemental sulfur down to Li2S. In order to design a viable Li-S battery, it is of decisive importance to fully understand this complex electrochemistry that needs aprotic solvents to function. This article is concise a review of mechanisms and materials involved in state-of-the-art Li-S cells. Electrochemical processes have been described according to the latest state of research, as well as main types of cathode, anode and electrolyte materials and chemicals. Also, main scientific and technological challenges and obstacle in designing commercially viable Li-S batteries have been pointed out.

Opis:
The cooperation of scientists specializing in different fields has given rise to the integration of previously distinct thematic areas and creation of new multidimensional disciplines as a result. Biochemistry, which has derived from the borderline of chemistry and biology, can be set as a good example. In this short review an insight into electrochemical studies, which are currently carried out in the Department of Microbioanalytics at the Faculty of Chemistry (Warsaw University of Technology), was presented. Three independent scientific pathways introducing electrochemical methods for biochemical and bioanalytical purposes can be distinguished among the ongoing researches. The first one embraces the design of the so-called electronic tongue – a system used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of liquid samples of complex composition. In this work, potentiometric sensor arrays were applied to develop an electronic tongue system enabling the evaluation of the effectiveness of bitter taste masking of pharmaceuticals. The second scientific pathway involves voltammetric studies of the interactions of biologically active peptides with copper(II) ions. The interest was drawn to clarify and describe the role of β-amyloid and NSFRY copper(II) complexes, relevant to Alzheimer’s disease occurrence and cardiovascular system disorder respectively. Finally, boronic acids and their derivatives, exhibiting the affinity for molecules possessing 1,2 or 1,3-diol group in their structure, were used as selective molecular receptors in the third research project. The studies include the selection of the optimal method and conditions of the immobilization process, providing the most favorable receptor layer structure, and the determination of the performances of constructed electrochemical sensor towards particular bioanalytes.

Opis:
The chemistry of carbon nanomaterials attracts continuous attention of scientists because of their promising properties and applications. Carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (CEINs) are subgroup of carbon nanomaterials. CEINs are the core-shell nanostructures including the metallic phase permanently encapsulated in a tight carbon coating. The carbon shell protects CEINs against oxidation of metal into a corresponding oxide, as well as prevents them from spontaneous aggregation. It has been documented that the magnetic properties of CEINs are superior in comparison with the respective materials comprising metal oxides. Additionally, the presence of the carbon shell enables surface functionalization of CEINs by means of various synthetic routes, both covalent and non-covalent ones. Chemical functionalization enables tuning the materials’ properties and applications, for example toward introducing catalytically active sites or improving colloidal stability. One may conclude that CEINs combine physicochemical properties of graphene and iron nanoparticle. Therefore, this is prospective material for many applications. In this article, we discuss the properties, chemistry and selected applications of CEINs.

Drug analysis necessitates introducing selective methods of detection and enriching the substances present in biomaterial at low concentration levels (trace analysis). Moreover, there is a continuous demand for increase in the quality of drugs that are being developed, which in turn enforces the development of analytical techniques of increasing sensitivity and accuracy with the applicationof combined separation techniques. Thus the premise of this review is to comparethe in vitro metabolic pathways of antibiotic drugs in model conditions such as in the presence of different microsomal fraction enzymes and with the applicationof electrochemical stimulation of metabolic transformations, as well as to the collected data with the results of in vivo experiments.
