biblical prayer
Opis:
The present paper presents the most important items of Paul’s apostolic prayer. The inquiry was concerned first with the biblical terms for Paul’s prayers (1) and its formal classification; the main forms are thanksgiving, blessing, and intercession (2). Than there follow some typical features of Paul’s apostolic prayers (3). The last step focuses on the theological aspects of Paul’s prayers, which have theocentric, christological and pneumatical issues (4). The concluding statement is that Paul’s prayer was not a part of his life; it was his whole life in Christ.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of three figures of Lucan version of the infancy narrative: Zechariah (Luc 1,5-23.57-79), Simeon (Luc 2,25-35), and Anna (Luc 2,36-38). There at least two thing that make these people alike: they are all in their old age and they pray to God. Even though the material concerning these personages is not fully comparable, it is possible to capture some similarities in their prayer: historical perspective, eschatological dimension, and universalism. All these three people not only pray to God but also the bear a witness to God.

The present article deals with the literary and theological analysis of Neh 9. This passage reveals striking connection between penance and prayer of post-exilic community. The liturgy of the day of penance puts special emphasis for the religious and national identity of Judaism after Babylonian exile. The people are looking forward remembering all main events from the history of salvation. The author of the present article shows the originality and maturity of many theological ideas of post-exilic community which form the fundaments for Judaism of the Second Temple.

Opis:
Jas 5:13a encourages anyone within the community who suffers to pray. The text does not, however, specify whether the prayer is for the elimination of suffering or for the grace to endure it. The aim of this work, therefore, is to identify the purpose of the prayer proposed in v. 13a. The method employed is an analysis of v. 13a in its immediate context of Jas 5:13-18. The study reveals that the phrase “prayer of faith” in v. 15a offers significant clues as to the purpose of the prayer in v. 13a. The prayer of faith is a renewal of one's commitment to God and their trust in God. The invitation to pray in v. 13a is therefore a request to reaffirm that commitment to God in time of trials. The conclusion is that James is calling on Christians who suffer to reiterate their commitment to God despite their trials, and to pray for the grace to courageously endure their challenges.

The Passion Narratives in Synoptic Gospels present Jesus on the cross not only as a Messias patiens, but also as a Messias orans. This article constitutes an attempt to show a synoptic picture of the Crucified who prays. In the first part of the article we focus on the nonverbal dimension of Jesus’ prayer on the cross, e.g. on the posture of his body forced by the means of execution and on his laud, inarticulate cry of the agony. In the second part, the subject of the analysis becomes three of seven “last words of Jesus”, that assume the form of prayer: Luc 23,34a; Mt 27,46; Luc 23,46.

Opis:
The analysis of nature and structure of Christian prayer in Origen’s treatise De oratione (about 234), presented in this article, shows that this opuscule can be considered as a synthesis of the theory of prayer, but it doesn’t contain its decisive and precise conception. Following St. Paul’s teaching (1 Tm 2:1) Origen distinguishes four kinds of prayer: petition, thanksgiving, propitiation and adoration; but in the same time he is convinced that in practice they can’t be separated, because they form an integral act of prayer. For instance, propitiatory prayer can’t form separate prayer, but it is necessary condition of the preparation to each prayer. Origen’s conception was continued in the Latin Church in 5th century by John Cassian and it became base for the later development of the theology of prayer.

The Book of Job read in synchronic way shows the evolution of prayer of the biblical hero. This hero, in the course of painful experiences, undergoes metamorphosis and passes the subsequent stages when approaching God in his prayer. From a rebellion against God, through an anger and argument with God, the hero experiences a deep spiritual depression. Finally, he accepts with confidence God’s way of proceeding in life and in the rule over the world. The hero’s prayer constitutes a model of maturation in human encounter with God.

Taking the subject of “victorious prayer”, author shows in detail the literary structure of the pericope Josh 10:1-27, and draws attention that the central point of the story is verse 14a: “There was no day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man”. These words, according to the author, are important hagiograph’s indication for the proper reading of the entire pericope’s message. After analyzing the main literary issue of the story, the article presents hallmarks and fruits of the “victorious prayer” of Joshua. As motivated by trust, backed by commitment and consistent with God’s plan, resulted in a deepening Joshua’s ties with the Lord, strengthen authority both of them and complete victory over a coalition of Canaanite kings. Author suggests that “the day of Joshua” described in Josh 10:1-27, later became for the biblical authors, a kind of model using to description of the “day of the Lord”. Recognizing the pericope as “praeparatio evangelica remota”, author encourages to typological interpretation of the Book of Joshua.

Pope John Paul II devotes such a lot of attention to matter of prayer that is why this article is an outline of this problem. To understanding of prayer the Pope puts the accent on her personal-Christological dimension. It’s indispensable element of sanctification’s process and fundamental symptom of “general spirituality needs” (NMI 33). Christian prayer should draw from wealth of God’s Word. Although it is duty every Christian especially priests and persons of particularly consecration are obligated to pray. They should also be the teachers of prayer. Each one of the states of life in Church has his own specificity of prayer and the last part of article has talked it through. The Pope’s preferred and commended prayers are: the rosary, the Angel of the Lord and the Liturgy of the Hours.

Opis:
The idea of God’s fatherhood seems very obvious in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus presents God as the Father who wants all what is good for all His children and invites all His children for a deep, spontaneous and intimate relationship with Him. The idea of God’s fatherhood is present especially in the prayer which Jesus taught His disciples. The “Our Father” is a Christian prayer but it has Jewish roots. Jesus was a Hebrew and prayed according to Jewish faith. The structure of “Our Father” is as follows: invocation followed by seven requests. The contents of the prayer reveal many references to Jewish prayers, known already at the time of Jesus (Abinu malkenu, Kaddish, Shemoneh Esreh). The similarities between “Our Father” and various prayers of the Jews do not exclude uniqueness of the prayer which Jesus taught His disciples. The idea of God’s fatherhood is present also in other parts of the Sermon on the mountain: the blessings of the peacemakers (Mt 5,9), the role of the disciples (Mt 5,13-16), love for enemies (Mt 5,43-45); the call to follow Christ (Mt 5,48); the Father who sees in secret (Mt 6,1-6.1618); Father’s forgiveness (Mt 6,14-15); Father’s care (Mt 6,25-34); Father’s goodness (Mt 7,7-11) and God’s fatherly will (Mt 7,21). All these passages, just like the prayer “Our Father”, underline the importance of filial trust in God as the Father.

Opis:
The article addresses the question of doxologies as found in the Apocalypse. The proposed analysis comprises of three principal parts. The first element was to characterize doxology as biblical prayer of worship to God. It was then followed by the description of eight doxologies present in the last Book of the New Testament (1:5b-6; 4:8-11; 5:9-14; 7:9-12; 11:15-18; 15:3-4; 16:5-7; 19:1-8), which are a paradigm for Christian prayer of worship, in particular communal prayer, considered in the last point of the deliberations. The examined doxologies of the Apocalypse confirm thoroughly the liturgical character of the last Book of the New Testament. They are an unceasing hymn of the Church, which gathers to worship, with powerful voice, its Creator and Savior. Thus it invariably recognizes the great gifts of God, accepting them and letting them bear fruit in the life of a community and individual believers. The Church fulfills its priestly mission and prepares to reign with God. The doxologies of the Apocalypse become then a significant “handbook” in the school of prayer of the New Testament.

Opis:
The present study aims at presenting the role of prayer in the life of the early Church the Acts of the Apostles. First, the practice of prayer in the early Church was discussed. In light of the analysis, prayer appears as a fixed practice among the fi rst Christians. The author of the Book of Acts underscores its basic characteristics, to wit faithfulness, perseverance, and unanimity. Second, the places of gathering for prayer were discussed. As many texts from Acts revealed, besides the Jerusalem temple, the private houses were the primary places of gatherings and prayer for early Christians. Third, different approaches and forms which characterized early Christian prayer were revealed. In the final threefold part of this study, the most salient features of prayer were discussed in detail: (1) the prayer of petition, connected in particular way with the gift of the Holy Spirit; (2) the prayer uttered at some crucial moments of the history of the early Church; Luke wanted to show how the first Christians faithfully followed the lead of Jesus, the master of prayer, in their search for God’s will revealed to them in prayer; and (3) the prayer of worship and thanksgiving.

Whether God planned for people physical death and senility (are the death and senility a consequence of the original sin?) or not, is still an open question in modern theology. In the Infancy Narratives (Luke 1–2) the evangelist presents the four old persons: Zechariah, Elisabeth, Simeon, and Anne. Exegetical and theological examination of the texts concerning these individuals leads to some characteristics which are common for all or for most of them. Among them we can enumerate the following ones: remaining in God’s presence in Jerusalem temple, continuing to pray, being led and inspired by the Holy Spirit (prophecy included), expecting the coming of the Messiah and living according to the God’s Law (righteousness). It seems, however, that the most important characteristic of the old age is sensibility in recognizing God’s inspiration.
