Opis:
The study assessed children’s ability to develop narratives and express ideas. It comprised 120 children (5-10 years), and differences in relation to age, sex, and economic area were measured. To this end, we compared four schools in 2 economic areas (poor and average). We used 2 picture and 2 story re-telling tasks designed to elicit narrations reflecting the generation of ideas in response to visual and auditory stimuli. Significant differences for age and sex but not economic areas were found. Suggestions are made for balancing brain activity and developing more creative approaches in teaching and assessment.

Opis:
Traditional education in the United States has been largely influenced by the Industrial Revolution. Educational technology helped prepare students for the industry. The modern information technology revolution has created a need for a different type of education, one that helps the student acquire the skills to process and use information to solve problems. One approach to education that does this is constructivism, an approach to education that helps students learn the structure of knowledge. Exemplary use of educational technology can be used to accomplish this goal. Exemplary lessons stimulate higher-order thinking to solve problems. Examples are provided that demonstrate this.

Opis:
This study aims to examine the relationship among critical thinking, grit, and creativity, which will be core competencies in a future society, and to verify the moderating effect of grit as an individual psychological factor between the two variables. For this purpose, a Likert survey is conducted on undergraduate students in a Korean university; and 129 responses are used. The result shows that, first, critical thinking and grit have significant influences on creativity. Second, the moderating effect of grit on the relationship between critical thinking and creativity is significant. The finding indicates that the higher the grit, the higher the positive relationship between critical thinking and creativity. This result implies that to increase the creativity of college students, an education that increases both critical thinking and grit is necessary.

The study presents a secondary analysis of the “Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes, Generic Skills Strand”, the international study of critical thinking skills (OECD, 2012). National secondary analyses include a comparison of student teachers (n = 110) and students of other study programmes (n = 413) in critical thinking and investigates a potential relation of contextual characteristics with their critical thinking performance. Performance Task and Multiple Choice Questions were used to measure critical thinking skills and a Contextual Questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data, and subjectively evaluated characteristics related to test-taking motivation and coursework. The main results showed that student teachers scored lower in critical thinking performance than students of other study programmes.

A number of studies show that both children and adults exhibit difficulties with problem-solving tasks. In fact, only one-third of adults reach the formal operational stage. Coaching such tasks in everybody’s language proves to be helpful only if the situation described is close to life events. The presented study confirmed the improvement in the thematic version of the Wason Test both in pupils and university students, albeit being far from spectacular. The authors suggest distinguishing a bounded type of thinking characterized by highly schematic, mechanistic, and automated thinking. They argue that it results both in educational and everyday failures.

Opis:
In recent years, discourse in education sciences has focussed on the study of the reflective thinking of teachers. Researchers, however, do not agree on how the reflective thinking of teachers can be measured. This qualitative study looks for an answer to the question whether a cognitive map is suitable for the discovery of teachers’ reflections. The study analyses the reflections of a secondary school teacher of mathematics using an unstructured cognitive map. The sample was selected on the basis of availability. The analysis of the map was done deductively, in a concept-driven way, on the basis of the number of contacts (edges) and concepts, central, peripheral and isolated concepts and their degrees, and the levels of the map. The teacher involved was recorded commenting on the process of map-making, which was then transferred to writing. The text corpus was then analysed inductively, in a data-driven way. The results show that the teacher interpreted his own activity - which depends on pedagogical knowledge, beliefs and pedagogical situations - in a complex manner. The filter function of beliefs can be observed when the teacher’s activities and thinking did not match because some internal and external factors. The data from the map contributed to analysis of reflections and the analysis of the map added new elements to existing techniques.

The study aims to develop a portfolio assessment to measure the student’s skill of using primary source evidence in historical learning. The portfolio assessment was developed based on Seixas’ concept of historical thinking. The portfolio assessment consists of essay test and interview guide, which has proved to be valid and reliable. The developed portfolio assessment can be used to depict the student’s skills to organize information from historical documents or other written resources, and then reconstruct it as historical narratives. The developed portfolio assessment can be posited as an alternative evaluation mode for history teachers.

Introduction. The article concerns research conducted among teachers and principals of primary schools in Poland and the Czech Republic as part of a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the State budget, We Cross the Borders. The Key Competencies in Teaching and Education project was implemented under the recruitment of the Praděd Microprojects Fund, Priority axis number: 11.4, priority axis name: Cooperation of institutions and communities. Aim. The theoretical and cognitive aim of the research was to diagnose the competencies of teachers and principals in critical thinking. The practical-implementation objective of the research was to develop practical recommendations that may be included in the education programs of future teachers and principals. Methods. The research used the method of a diagnostic survey and the questionnaire technique. Data analysis was performed with the use of STATISTICA software. Results. The research results showed differences between the behaviour of teachers and principals in such matters as contact with parents, following the headmaster’s instructions, using innovative teaching methods and self-confidence in everyday work-related situations. The results show statistically significant differences in their declarations of behaviour in a particular situation. From the research, it can be concluded that principals are more interested than teachers in solving any difficult situation to resolve the conflict rather than focusing primarily on the consequences of the situation.

It has been long pointed that Indonesian education system embraces active learning to enhance critical thinking. However, active learning techniques are not yet optimally introduced in Indonesian education settings. Studies have shown case studies combined with the concept map method improving students’ critical thinking. However, there is a lack of evidence related to this method in the Indonesian education system. The presented study examined the effect of a case study combined with the concept map on improving critical thinking skills in Indonesian first-year college students. Three groups attended classes with the same class objectives and contents, consisting of eight weekly meetings. The only difference among the groups was the educational strategy; case study combined with concept map (CSCM), case study alone (CS), and traditional lecture style with no specific active learning techniques (Control). Results indicated that the CSCM method is most effective in improving critical thinking skills. Although CSCM was also most effective on improving critical thinking disposition, differences among groups were not statistically significant.

The presented research develops a deconstructive learning history model to promote the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) of university students. According to Thiagarajan, Semmel, & Semmel’s (1974) approach, the model was developed in four stages: defining, design, development, and dissemination. The research participants were 120 students of the History Education Department, Sebelas Maret University, Indonesia. The authors found the main problems related to the aspects of chronological thinking, students’ passive attitude, and the availability of learning path. Based on those problems, the author designed a deconstructive learning history model, consisting of four learning stages: problem statement, deconstruction, construction, and articulation. At the development and summative evaluation stages, the learning model proved feasible and effective in promoting the HOTS, thus, the learning model can solve the problems of time orientation and students’ passive attitude. Considering the findings and results of the research, the authors state that the learning model becomes a decisive factor in provoking students to reach the higher cognitive level in Bloom’s taxonomy.

This paper reports on the research on year five pupils’ understanding of generalised arithmetic, which aimed to investigate the understanding of year five pupils’ commutative property and the property of zero together with its correlation with their mathematical achievement. Data for the study were collected via paper and pencil assessment answers for two items. Findings showed moderate achievement for both of the tasks. The pupils’ explanation illustrated their poor conceptual understanding of commutative property and the property of zero. However, this understanding is not correlated with their mathematical achievement in school. It shows that an outstanding student in school did not necessarily acquire conceptual understanding of commutative principle and the property of zero.
