W artykule podjęty zostaje temat powieści autobiograficznej i jej naukowego uzasadnienia. Podstawowe problemy w użyciu pojęcia wynikają z różnorodnego rozumienia terminu „autobiograficzny”, co zostaje omówione w części pierwszej. Część druga podejmuje skrótowy przegląd ważnych stanowisk wobec powieści autobiograficznej, głównie w polskim literaturoznawstwie. Najbardziej rozpowszechnione są w tym obszarze metody biograficzne i rozmaite odmiany paktu autobiograficznego. Każdy wybór metodologiczny zakłada jednak jakąś stratę, powieść autobiograficzna oferuje bowiem kilka wykluczających się wzajemnie możliwości odczytań. Znamienne jest, że wiele z aktualnych pytań rzadko podejmowanych jest dzisiaj, dotyczą one przede wszystkim receptywnego i medialnego wymiaru pojęcia, w którym powieść autobiograficzna mogłaby zaistnieć jako „figura odczytywania”. Pytania te zostają postawione w części końcowej.
The article discusses the subject of autobiographical novel and its scientific justification. In the first part the author draws the readers’ attention to the fact that certain basic problems concerning the use of the very notion stem from different ways of understanding the term “autobiographical.” The second part of the article outlines certain important approaches to autobiographical novel, predominantly in the Polish literary studies. In this area the most common are biographical methods and various forms of autobiographical treaty. Every single methodological choice entails a certain loss, since autobiographical novel offers several mutually exclusive interpretations. However, there are numerous questions which are rarely posed nowadays, and which concern receptive and medial dimension of the notion in which an autobiographical novel could exist as an “interpretation figure”. These questions are posed in the final part of the work.

The article is review on the latest book by Ewa Stachniak, The Chosen Maiden. It is a fictionalised biography belonging to more and more popular femino-centric trend of the contemporary historical fiction. Stachniak based on the life of ballet dancer-choreographer Bronislawa Nijinska, sister of Vaslav Nijinsky. Having done much research, she convincingly articulates what she imagines to be the workings of Bronia’s mind, her passion and conviction as an artist, and her ability to endure privates tragedies.

The article discusses the conventional models and translation techniques, which are most common among the Polish translators of the weird fiction by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The proposed classification of such models, aimed at either “popularisation,” “stereotypisation” or “revision” of Lovecraft’s short stories, presents the impact of extra-textual factors (vision of the writer, target group of readers, cultural and political influences) on the content, language and style of translated works by the American author. The comparative analysis takes into consideration one of the early short stories by Lovecraft, Dagon (1917), and its Polish versions by Arnold Mostowicz (1973), Robert Lipski (1994) and Maciej Płaza (2012).

The article discusses the 2015 adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel Far from the Madding Crowd in the context of earlier adaptations of Hardy’s texts.It focuses on the modifications introduced in the adaptation process, especially those concerning the female protagonist, Bathsheba Everdeen, aimed at making her more “modern” and balancing her independence,unusual for the 19th century, with the adaptors’ urge to make her the heroine of a romantic love story, which in Thomas Vinterberg’s film surprisingly comes to the foreground.
 Artykuł stanowi omówienie najnowszej adaptacji filmowej powieści Z dala od zgiełku Thomasa Hardy’ego, wydanej w 1874 r., w kontekście wcześniejszych adaptacji filmowych powieści tego autora. Przedmiotem analizy są przede wszystkim modyfikacje wprowadzone w procesie adaptacji, a w szczególności te, które dotyczą postaci głównej bohaterki. W filmie z 2015 r., do którego scenariusz napisał David Nicholls, a który wyreżyserował Thomas Vinterberg, postać Bathsheby Everdeen uwspółcześniono, tak by była ona bardziej wiarygodną i ciekawszą dla współczesnego odbiorcy, a fabułę filmu skonstruowano w taki sposób, by bez modyfikacji głównych wydarzeń jej motywem przewodnim stała się historia miłosna, która w powieściHardy’ego (tudzież we wcześniejszych jej adaptacjach) nie jest tak oczywista. Artykuł omawia sposoby, w jaki cele te osiągnięto.

Józef Ignacy Kraszewski is most notably known as a history enthusiast; however, he was also a knowledgeable observer of 18th century customs and the everyday life of certain social groups. One has grounds to say that the period in which he lived – namely the Saxons era, in which people led colorful social lives – was conducive to his interest. Also, the writer’s personal experiences are not without significance, especially his childhood and stay in Romanów, where Kraszewski familiarized himself with the rules of etiquette by which the gentry abode. Yet another interest that contributed to the accurate description of 18th century customs was the fact that the writer was a bibliophile. Looking through the Dresden archives, Kraszewski got a clear picture of the life of the society which allowed him to aptly depict the flavor of those times in his artistic work. Among a number of social niceties, Kraszewski paid special attention to the customs connected with the Old Polish dining table, namely its decorative qualities created by an abundance of crystal, trinkets, flowers, table linen, porcelain figurines and bright tablecloth. Finally, tableware seems to be part and parcel of such depictions.

W artykule podjęto próbę odczytania powieści Żeromskiego jako zapowiedzi współczesnej powieści ekologicznej. Zielone czytanie twórczości pisarza kieruje uwagę czytelników na pozaludzkie formy życia, wprowadzając alternatywną optykę opisu rzeczywistości. Historia Tomasza Judyma splata się z historią świata przyrody. Wędrując po Paryżu, Warszawie, Cisy i Zagłębiu bohater dostrzega symptomy świadczące o postępującej degradacji środowiska naturalnego. Jako jeden z nielicznych bohaterów dostrzega destrukcyjny wpływ przemysłu na środowisko naturalne. Judym odchodzi od perspektywy antropocentrycznej na rzecz biocentrycznej,  co czyni go bardziej wrażliwym na cierpienie innych, rozumianych tu jako nieludzkich mieszkańców Ziemi. Natura jest samoregulującym się żywym organizmem, potężnym żywiołem, którego kontemplacja może zarówno zachwycać, jak i przerażać. Ludzie bezdomni antycypują współczesne myślenie ekologiczne, które domaga się racjonalnego wykorzystania dóbr ziemskich.
This article attempts to read Żeromski's novel as a prefiguration of a contemporary ecological novel. The green reading of the writer's work redirects readers' attention towards non-human forms of life, introducing alternative optics for describing reality. The story of Tomasz Judym is tangled with the history of the natural world. While wandering around Paris, Warsaw, Cisy and Zagłębie, the protagonist notices the symptoms which prove the progressive degradation of the natural environment. As one of the few protagonists, he sees the destructive impact of industry on the natural environment. Judym is abandoning the anthropocentric perspective in favour of the biocentric one, making him more sensitive to the suffering of others, understood here as non-human inhabitants of the Earth. Nature is a self-regulating living organism, a powerful element whose contemplation can both delight and frighten. Ludzie bezdomni anticipates contemporary ecological thinking, which calls for rational use of earthly goods.

Romuald Traugutt was short-sighted. He wore glasses from his early years until the last moments of his life. A moment before the execution, he took them off and threw them on the ground. They had survived their owner – today they are kept in the Licheń sanctuary. The motif of Romuald Traugutt’s glasses is a frequent and important component of his literary legend. It appears multiple times in literature – from Gloria Victis by Eliza Orzeszkowa to the poem Gest [Gesture] by Stanisław Grochowiak.

Recenzowana praca słowackiego rusycysty Antona Repon̂a pt. Umelecke zobrazenie ĉloveka v romanovom svete I. S. Turgeneva (Banska Bystrica 2011) dotyczy poetyki powieści Turgieniewowskiej. Autor koncentruje się na obrazowaniu postaci. Tworzy własną typologię bohaterów, daje wnikliwe uwagi o specyficznych cechach realizmu Turgieniewa i śledzi recepcję estetyczną jego dorobku przez symbolistów rosyjskich. Autorowi nie można odmówić pracowitości, trzeba docenić jego wkład do badań nad spuścizną największego romantyka wśród realistów rosyjskich.
The review of "Umelecke zobrazenie ĉloveka v romanovom svete I. S. Turgeneva" (Banska Bystrica 2011) by Anton Repoň, a Slovak specialist in Russian studies, deals with the poetics of Turgenev’s novel. The author concentrates on the depiction of characters. To this end, he proposes his own typology of characters, provides a number of penetrating remarks on the specific traits of Turgenev’s realism and tracks the aesthetic reception of his oeuvre by Russian symbolists. There is no denying of author’s diligence, and his contribution to the research into the legacy of the greatest romantic among the Russian realists should be appreciated.

Józef  Weyssenhoff was a highly popular and widely read author at the end of the 19th and in the early 20th century. He was active as a writer, literary critic, and journalist during the time of the Young Poland movement and in the interwar period. He wrote his works at the turn of the two centuries and in the first decades of the new century. Throughout the later stage of his literary activity, i.e. from 1905 until his death, Weyssenhoff was greatly interested in politics. His contacts, reads, own observations and experiences in this matter gave rise to his tendentious political novels. The subjects he raised and reflected upon include the issue of the Polish-Lithuanian conflict, which caused a huge controversy in the first decades of the 20th century. Weyssenhoff demonstrated his own stance on the matter in his novel Union, published in 1910, which he wrote during the period of intensification of the national movement in Lithuania, particularly in Vilnius. The author regarded the movement to be politically dangerous, propagating hatred towards Poland, and able to cause the common cultural, historical, and political heritage of Poland and Lithuania to be destroyed. Young Lithuanian activists were acting to the detriment of the Polish language, depreciating the value of anything Polish. The conflict between Poland and Lithuania increased the risk of russification. The author suggested that what should be done in those circumstances was seek to restore the Polish-Lithuanian alliance. He showed the readers of his book how that process should be initiated. The marriage between the protagonists of Union: Kazimierz Rokszycki, a Pole, and Krystyna Sołomerecka, a Lithuanian, who loved their common motherland, serves as a symbol of a new, revived relationship between Poland and Lithuania.

Artykuł omawia rolę, jaką rozprawa Emigracje intymne. O współczesnych polskich narracjach autobiograficznych Agnieszki Nęckiej odgrywa w najnowszych badaniach literaturoznawczych nad problematyką postmodernizmu w powieściowych rekonstrukcjach tożsamości autorów-emigrantów. Na badawczą propozycję Nęckiej składa się osiem krytycznych szkiców dotyczących prozy Zygmunta Haupta, Zbigniewa Kruszyńskiego, Manueli Gretkowskiej, Artura Leczyckiego oraz – przywołanej jako kontekst porównawczy – twórczości quasi-autobiograficznej Mikołaja Łozińskiego, Tomasza Piątka, Magdaleny Tulli i Michała Witkowskiego. Są to nie tylko postacie twórców, których prace nadal wymagają pogłębionej refleksji, ale także sama problematyka ujęta w wymownym tytule – Emigracje intymne – pozwala na wieloaspektową, uwzględniającą liczne konteksty kulturowe interpretację ich pisarstwa. Z węższej bowiem perspektywy rozważania Nęckiej stanowią studium przypadków prozaików, którzy zgodnie z zasadą „samowpisania się w utwór” tworzą autobiografie na fundamencie redefinicji wzorców tradycyjnie stosowanych jako punkt odniesienia dla opisu tożsamości różnych modeli „wygnańca”. Z perspektywy szerszej natomiast, omawiane w Emigracjach intymnych przypadki ilustrują kulisy kulturowych mechanizmów zaprzeczenia i transformacji modernizmu oraz wskazują na jego trudne do odrzucenia dziedzictwo, wciąż obecne we współczesnej praktyce twórców epoki postmodernistycznej.
The article discusses the role the dissertation entitled "Intimate Emigrations. On the contemporary Polish biographic narrations" by Agnieszka Nęcka plays in the newest literary research on the issue of postmodernism in novel reconstructions of emigrant authors identities. The research proposed by Nęcka is composed by eight critical sketches on the prose of Zygmunt Haupt, Zbigniew Kruszyński, Manuela Gretkowska, Artur Leczycki, and referred to in comparative contexts of the quasi-autobiographic works by Mikołaj Łoziński, Tomasz Piątek, Magdalena Tulli and Michał Witkowski. These are not merely the profiles of the writers whose works still require a more profound reflection, but also the issue presented in the meaningful title – "Intimate Emigrations" – which permits multi-faceted and varied cultural contexts for the interpretation of their writings. From a narrower perspective, Nęcka’s dissertation constitutes a case study of a prose writer, who – in accordance with the rule of self-placement in the work – creates autobiographies based on the redefinition of the traditional patterns applied as a point of reference for the description of various models of “an exile’s” identity. From a wider perspective, the cases offered in the "Intimate Emigrations" illustrate the internal cultural mechanisms of denial and transformation of modernism, as well as indicate the difficulty in rejecting the heritage, which continues to be present in the contemporary works of postmodernist writers.

The article is a review of Another Canon: The Polish Nineteenth-Century Novel in World Context, edited by Grażyna Borkowska and Lidia Wiśniewska, published in 2020 by Lit Verlag, Switzerland within the Polonistik im Kontext series. The first part of the monograph includes articles that provide a reinterpretation of selected novels (including Krasicki’s The Adventures of Mr. Nickolas Wisdom, Orzeszkowa’s On the Niemen, and Sienkiewicz’s Without Dogma) in relation to the main currents of world literature. The second part focuses on the reception of selected nineteenth-century Polish novels in Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, France, Spain, the United States, and Great Britain. The publication is aimed at raising the interest of non-Polish recipients in the nineteenth-century novels during a period when twentieth and contemporary Polish literature has already gained relative popularity abroad.
Artykuł jest recenzją monografii wieloautorskiej wydanej w 2020 r. przez szwajcarskie wydawnictwo LIT w ramach serii Polonistik im Kontext, poświęconej recepcji polskiej powieści dziewiętnastowiecznej za granicą. Autorami artykułów są poloniści związani z zagranicznymi ośrodkami akademickim. Pierwsza część zawiera współczesne analizy wybranych powieści (m.in. Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki Ignacego Krasickiego, Nad Niemnem Elizy Orzeszkowej i Bez dogmatu Henryka Sienkiewicza) prowadzone w kontekście współistniejących nurtów literatury światowej. Artykuły zawarte w części drugiej dotyczą recepcji wybranych powieści w takich krajach, jak Białoruś, Bułgaria, Gruzja, Rosja, Hiszpania, Francja, Wielka Brytania i Stany Zjednoczone. Celem monografii jest zainteresowanie obcojęzycznych literaturoznawców polską powieścią dziewiętnastowieczną, w czasach, gdy dwudziestowieczna i współczesna literatura polska zyskała już za granicą znaczącą popularność.

This text’s topic are all the forms of occultism and magic presented in four examples of gothic novel: Matthew Gregory Lewis’ The Monk, Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton’s The Last Days of Pompeii, William Beckford’s Vathek and Alexandre Dumas’ The Wolf Leader. The work presents the part, which magic plays in characters’ lives: how it is considered as art and wisdom, how important are rituals, why do people want to use it, how evil it can be, how it separates magicians from others, and how it can destroy the protagonist’s life.

Opis:
Maria Niklewiczowa,  an author of children’s literature, , contributed to the popularization of reading practice through telling her fairy tales during public shows and having her stories published later on, based on the idea that listening to fairy tales belongs to children’s first contacts with literature. As an author of novels, she promotedg the knowledge of history. She was an organizer of cultural activities as well, as evidenced in her fairy tale reading sessions. Until today, her most popular book is a volume of fairy-tales titled „Bajarka opowiada” (first edition – 1959).

Opis:
The debut novel Winternähe by the young German-Jewish author Mirna Funk is a paradigmatic illustration of the post Shoah literature of the third, the grandchildren generation. The novel expounds on against background of the death of Shoah-survivors, the new ways of dealing with the family past and transnational Shoah memory in a complex relation to the globality and mobility as current conditions of the modern life. Funk’s novel also expounds on the subversive strategies, which are inherent in modern virtual communication media like Facebook or Instagram.

Opis:
The present article discusses works by Łukasz Orbitowski and Paweł Demirski, two authors representing the young generation of Polish writers whose texts stand in the opposition to a worn-out and highly ritualised trend of national-symbolic interpretations of memory. The debunking literary strategy of both authors relies heavily on the aesthetics of subversion. Choosing for Spectres the genre of historical fantasy, Łukasz Orbitowski provides himself with a vast space of artistic freedom, using it for free reinterpretations and continuations of the existing narratives of memory. The theatre of Paweł Demirski and Monika Strzępka, in turn, is a theatre of linguistic performance which clashes sequences of language that transmit historical imagination and national self-awareness of Poles. In Demirski’s play theatre becomes a medium of protest against fossilised forms of memory, where graphically staged painful trauma is deprived of the aura of sacrum. Triviality and vulgarism of language demolish both the elevated phrases of the national culture of memory and the naïve pop-cultural representations of war and the Warsaw Uprising.
