Opis:
This article describes interaction between three carnivore species: raccoon dog's (Nyctereutes procyonoides), European badger's (Meles meles) and red fox'es (Vulpes vulpes) in Poland. Diets of the three predators studied in Białowieża Forest shows similarity but also differences in main food items. The red fox was the most and raccoon dog the last carnivorous of these three predators. In the Białowieża Forest red fox feed more small mammals, whereas European badger specialised in earthworms. Raccoon dog consumed mainly carcass, amphibians and reptiles. The food niches of raccoon dog and European badger overlapped more than the red fox and other species. Additionally, the three predatory mammals have different habitat niche breadth, which is closely correlated with their foraging strategies. Despite of that these 3 carnivore's species share many resources, and on the same area.

Opis:
Abundance of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) populations in Poland and Europe have increased in the past decades, especially in the areas of high anthropogenic transformation. The aim of this study was to assess the current density of red fox in natural forests and to analyse changes in its abundance since 1981. The fieldwork was carried out in Polish part of the Bialowieża Primeval Forest (BPF), including Białowieża, Browsk and Hajnówka forest districts as well as Białowieża National Park. A standard method of snow tracking along transect routes (15 to 94 km long in the subsequent winters, altogether 199 km) was used. Taking a density of snow tracks per 1 km of a transect route per 24 h and the length of daily movements of red foxes (13,8 km) we calculated the population density. Results were compared with historical data derived with the same method. Mean number of tracks of red fox in the years 2011−2016 equaled 6.1/km/24h (SD=3.9). Density of fox population was 0.69 individuals/km2, which results in the abundance of the population in the whole area of BPF of 414 individuals in winter time, while of approximately 869 individuals in spring. Comparison of current data with the results from last three decades showed an increasing trend in the population of the analysed species. Nevertheless, in comparison to central or western Poland the density of the red fox in the BPF is still relatively low. Possible factors that suppress this population are parasites, infections (mange, rabies) and large carnivores.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the diet composition of four carnivore species inhabiting the Gorce National Park (Western Carpathians, S Poland), i.e., grey wolf (Canis lupus), Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), and pine marten (Martes martes). The food analysis was based on scats collected between June 2016 and February 2017 along seven transects of a total length 96.13 km. Altogether 187 faeces were found, 95 of grey wolf, 20 of lynx, 49 of red fox, and 23 of pine marten, respectively. The dominant food category of wolf and lynx were ungulates, comprising respectively 98% and 95% of the consumed biomass. The trophic niche overlap between wolf and lynx was very high (Pianka’s index Ojk=0.99). However, there were differences in the consumed prey species. Wolves fed on red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa), while lynxes foraged equally on two ungulates, red deer and roe deer. Medium−sized carnivores showed greater variety in consumed food. Both pine marten and red fox had higher values of Levins’ index of the trophic niche breadth than larger carnivores and highly overlapped their diets (Ojk=0.96). Pine marten and red fox consumed mostly small mammals. Additionally, martens consumed frequently fruits, whereas red foxes foraged on carrion of ungulates. This might explain the fact that wolf and lynx overlapped their trophic niches more with red fox than with the pine marten.

Opis:
In this study effects of burrowing by badgers and foxes on forest soil and vegetation were examined. Burrow digging resulted in increasing topsoil alkalinity and changing the availability of some nutrients. Soil disturbances supported higher diversity of herbaceous and woody plants, and favoured the occurrence of fugitive and nutrient demanding species. Badgers had stronger impact on soil and vegetation than foxes.

Opis:
Due to the fact that game animals in Poland over the last hundred years or so have been subject to statistical registration of their abundance and exploitation level, the history of animal species threatened by extinction, i.e. hare, partridge, capercaillie and black grouse and red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox and beaver in the peak of their population success has been described. Attempt was made to establish the cause of the permanent negative or positive abundance dynamics for these species throughout the country. In addition, a forecast for the future development of these species was formulated.
