Opis:
The growth rate and developmental traits of oak provenances were studied in spring 2001. The studies showed significant differences between provenances with regard to survival, tree height, dbh, basal area, volume, stem straightness, branch angle, epicormic shoot formation and foliage losses. There were no inter−population differences for stem forks, grade of natural stem pruning and bio−social position of trees in a stand. Provenances: Kórnik, Białowieża and Dębina exhibited the best height growth. Trees from the Białowieża provenance had the straightest stems with a few epicormic shoots. The performance of sessile oaks under the site conditions of the experiment was much poorer than of penduculate oaks. No geographical patterns were found for growth performance and developmental traits. The obtained results indicate the possibility to select provenances of fast−growing trees with economically advantageous traits.

Opis:
This study investigates the effect of the enrichment of Scots pine stands with a common beech understorey on changes in the species composition and selected life traits of an important zooindicator group, such as the ground beetles (Col. Carabidae). The field investigations were carried out in a fresh coniferous forest in the Myszyniec Forest District (N Poland) in stands with (P+) and without (P) beech in the understorey. Each treatment was repeated four times. In each repetition, six pitfalls were installed. The traps were replaced 13 times, every two weeks, from April to October. In total, 4412 specimens classified into 25 species of ground beetles were captured. The tree stands with the beech understorey were observed to contain a significantly higher number of species than the ones with the beech undergrowth. Also, the value of the Shannon index of species diversity (H’) and mean individual biomass (MIB) were significantly higher in the treatment with the beech understorey. Principal Component Analysis showed variations in Carabidae assemblages within the analysed types of forest. Pterostichus oblongopunctatus, Pterostichus aethiops and Pterostichus vernalis were more strongly correlated with the stands without beech understorey. The stands enriched with the beech understorey correlated with the occurrence of large zoophages: Carabus arvensis and Cychrus caraboides, and hemizoophages of the genus Amara. An in−depth ecological characterisation of the captured Carabidae showed that the dominant ground beetles in the investigated forest habitats, in terms of the number of caught individuals and species, belonged to forest zoophagous carabids characterised by moderate requirements for moisture in a habitat, and having the spring type of development. Representatives of large zoophages and species with the autumn type of development, i.e. species associated with later ecological succession stages, were more numerously caught in the pine stands without the beech understorey The study provides evidence that justifies the planting of deciduous undergowth in monoculture coniferous pine tree forests. The presence of an understorey contributes to higher: richness of Carabidae species, values of the MIB and abundance of large forest species presenting the autumn type of development, that is the species, which are characteristic for forest areas representing a highly advanced succession stage.

The studies were conducted on three plots, established in 100−130 year old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands (type: Pinetum vaccinio−mirtyllosum) situated in the southern and central parts of Lithuania (Kaunas and Vare˙na districts). Their canopy closure was from 0.6 to 0.8. The study areas comprised of a mature stand (control) and clear−cut felled in spring 2016 and tilled after 5 months. Altogether 30 litter samples (five per stand) were taken from randomly chosen locations twice: the first sampling took place one month after cutting (in May) and the other after five months (in October). In total, 921 adults and larvae representing 49 species of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) were collected. The higher number of individuals was harvested in control stands (fig. 1a, tab. 1). The collected individuals were significantly more abundant during the second sampling in all studied stands (fig. 1b, tab. 1). In the same way the higher number of species was detected in control stands, but significant differences were observed only during the first sampling. Amount of forest species differed insignificantly between control stands and clear−cuts, while the rate of zoophagous species was significantly higher in control stands (fig. 2a, tab. 1). The number of mixophagous species was significantly higher in clear−cuts during the second sampling (fig. 2b−c, tab. 1). Both the felling and the tilling had a distinct impact on transformation of rove beetles assemblages in clear−cuts comparing to the mature stands (fig. 3). Ischnosoma splendidum, Othius subuliformis, Stenichnus scutellaris, Trimium brevicorne, Xantholinus tricolor, Philonthus cignatus and Sepedophilus sp. were revealed as associated with mature pine stands sites, while only Acrotona parens and Amischa analis were connected with clear−cuts (tab. 2). We propose to use these two species as indicators of strong transformation of rove beetles assemblages due to clearcutting and management. The results of the study proved that negative impact of clearcutting on number of individuals and number of forest species in rove beetles assemblages is distinct even in short period after cutting as well as that transformation of rove beetles assemblages increase after cutting of stand, especially after tilling.

The main purpose of the study was to compare carabid beetles assemblages from recultivated and spontaneously regenerated forest of post−industrial areas. The survey was conducted in southern part of Poland in three environmental types: recultivated (afforested) dumping grounds, spontaneously re−vegetated dumping grounds and reference forests. In total, 2036 specimen belonging to 36 Carabidae species were collected. GLM analysis indicated that carabids assemblages structures (abundance, species richness, Fisher alpha index, general biomass and mean individual biomass) decreased on recultivated dumping grounds in comparison to areas with spontaneous succession and reference forest. Analysis of redundancy showed a wide variety of species composition and life traits parameters in respect to environmental types. SIMPER analysis showed that species characteristic for recultivated dumping grounds included e.g. Harpalus rufipes and Calathus erratus (small body size and herbivore strategy of feeding). C. erratus was the most dominant on spontaneously regenerated dumping grounds, while species typical for forest ecosystems included representatives of Carabus and Pterostichus sp. (brachypterous large or medium size predators).

Opis:
The study objective was to verify the hypothesis on ecotypic variation in beech and ineffectiveness of transferring its reproductive material over larger distances. Beech nuts were collected in the autumn of 1990. Experimental sites were established in the Baligród and Oleszyce forest districts (SE Poland). On single plots of 18.00×13.75 m (247.5 m2), a total of 110 three−years−old seedlings were planted in a 1.50×1.25 m spacing in autumn 1993. Single row of mountain ash was left between the plots. In the period of 1994−2016 a series of analyses was conducted concerning adaptation, growth, phenological and qualitative traits. Height was measured on all trees using a measuring stick, except for the year 2016, when hypsometer was used to measure approximately 20 heights and remaining ones were determined based on the height curve. Results were analysed using univariate analysis of variance based on the random model, followed by Duncan’s multiple range test for each experimental site and year of the study. For 2016 ordering of populations in each of the experimental sites was compared using Spearman’s rank correlation test. In terms of survival rates in Oleszyce site the local provenance from Oleszyce proved to be superior. In all the years of the measurements it was characterised by the highest survival rate. In this respect the Komańcza and Lutowiska provenances from the Bieszczady Mountains turned out to be the worst ones. In the experimental site in Baligród, the Barlinek and Połczyn provenances outranked the others in terms of their survival rates, while in 2016 it was the population from Komańcza. Tree height effects in Oleszyce site showed that the local population from Oleszyce grows best, while the Pomeranian population from Jamy was also exceptional. The Bieszczady populations (Komańcza and Lutowiska) are characterised by the worst growth traits. In the experimental site in Baligród, the local Baligród population is characterised by poorest growth, similarly to the other ones from the Bieszczady. In terms of growth, the Western Pomeranian population from Gryfino is exceptional. As far as all the evaluated traits are concerned the investigated populations exhibit considerable variability, as no geographic ordination could be found. It was confirmed that imported populations, even from long distances, may exceed local populations in terms of their adaptation traits and growth rates.

Opis:
Paper presents an analysis of phenotypical variation and an evaluation of silvicultural quality of progeny from 27 beech stands around Poland that grow on the provenance plot in the Brzeziny Forest District (51.791997°N, 19.813841°E). The trial commenced in spring 1996, on the basis of 2−year−old saplings with covered root systems. A randomised block method with 3 replications was applied, with subsequent measurements and analyses carried out in 2015, following 20 years of growth. The considered features included height, breast−height diameter, crown habit, trunk curvature and height of branching. Single−factor analysis of variance and Tukey’s HSD test were applied to determine the significance of differences among provenances. The largest mean height was attained by beeches originating from Gdańsk, Szczecinek and Bierzwnik. The least−tall beeches were in turn those whose origins were in Tomaszów, Łagów and Grodzisk. The greatest intra−population variation in height characterised the beeches from Gryfino and Krucz, while the most limited variation was noted for Gdańsk population. The beeches of greatest girth were again those deriving from Gdańsk, Bierzwnik and Szczecinek populations, as well as the one from Kwidzyn 15. The lowest values for diameter at breast height were again noted for the Grodzisk, Tomaszów and Łagów provenances. Marked intra−population variation in this feature characterised trees from the Gryfino, Bieszczady National Park (42), Zdrojów and Krucz provenances. The populations also differered in relation to analysed more−qualitative features. The group of populations prized most in terms of their overall silvicultural quality included Gryfino, Grodzisk, Zdrojów, Bieszczady National Park, Bierzwnik and Szczecinek provenances. In contrast, only low quality was manifested by beeches from Tomaszów, Rymanów, Wejherowo, Młynary, Golub− −Dobrzyń and Kwidzyn provenances. In general, populations originating from the north (especially Pomerania) achieved better growth and a more favourable quality evaluation than those from the south, and sites located near the range limits of the species (fig. 7). The obtained results show that northern Poland boasts the most plastic populations of beech. Equally, it was not possible to establish that populations of local origin were superior in terms of growth to those originating in more far−flung parts of Poland. Furthermore, assessments of different populations in terms of their growth and quality features often proved highly disparate.

The paper presents the assessment of the adaptive traits (survival rate and height growth) of 5−year−old silver fir one year after planting on conservation plots of the Carpathian Gene Bank (KGB) located in the territory of Wisła, Andrychów, Sucha, Nowy Targ, Krościenko, Nawojowa, Rymanów oraz Bircza forest districts. The conducted studies showed a high (over 90%) survival rate of the tested fir provenances. The growth of the West Carpathian (Beskid Śląski, Beskid Żywiecki, and Beskid Mały) fir provenances was high on the majority of the KGB conservation plots, while the height growth of fir stands from the central part of the Carpathian Mountains (Beskid Wyspowy, Beskid Sądecki, and Beskid Niski) was on an average level. The East Carpathian (Pogórze, Słonne and Bieszczady Mountains) provenances were significantly diversified in terms of the height and did not form a homogenous group.

Opis:
European beech is one of the most important broadleaved tree species in Poland and will play probably even more significant role in the future due to the predicted climate change. The main objectives of this study was to analyse and compare the growth parameters and morphological traits between 23 European beech provenances from south−eastern Poland (fig. 1). The research was conducted on the experimental plot established in Łosie Forest District in 2006. The experiment employed a randomized complete block design consisting of 92 plots (23 provenances×4 blocks). On each plot 100 trees representing given provenance were planted in 1.5×1.5 m spacing. In the spring and autumn 2015 we measured and determined the following parameters for the subsample of 36 trees on each plot: survival rate, tree height, diameter at breast height, diameter of the branch at the middle height of the crown length, stem straightness, crown shape, tendency to create forks, mean angle between stem and branches and spring phenology. We also included different eco−physiographical characteristics for each provenances (tab. 1). We performed basic statistics to describe mean values and standard errors (fig. 2, tab. 2) and finally we quantified the interaction between traits and eco−physiographical characteristics by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) (fig 3, tab. 3). The obtained results indicates that under growth conditions on experimental trial in Łosie Forest District, the provenances from lower elevated regions with lower precipitation and higher mean temperature (i.e. more arid conditions; Kielce and Narol provenances) were characterized by thicker dbh and branch dimeters in contrast to regions from southern Poland (Łosie, Bricza 1, Stary Sącz and Nawojowa). European beech provenances from regions with more humid conditions and lower mean annual temperature, as well as shorter vegetation season are characterized by higher survival rate. They are also higher than other provenances, but reveal the lower ratio dbh to branch diameter.
