Opis:
The aim of this work was to analyze the tree−ring width, the share of the latewood as well as the density of wood of trees growing in commercial and degraded stands. The research was carried out in the Brynek Forest District (southern Poland) in 3 commercial stands and in 4 degraded stands. For every study plot fifteen spruces were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. Next, the surface of the cores was smoothed and the width of the annual rings was measured. Latewood zones were determined and the share of latewood was calculated. It was found that the average and minimum tree−ring width was the same in both commercial and degraded stands, while the maximum values were slightly and insignificantly different. In turn, the average share of latewood was higher in trees from commercial stands, but higher minimum and maximum values were recorded in stands on degraded sites. In this case, the differences turned to be statistically significant. The average density of wood was slightly lower in trees from degraded stands compared to wood from commercial stands (413 vs 418 kg/m3). Theminimum and maximum values were also higher in trees from commercial stands. However, this feature did not show a significant difference between analysed groups of stands. We found that despite such significant differences in the terrain formed during the production of zinc and lead ores, the wood of trees growing in these areas hardly shows any differences (except for the share of latewood) in comparison to wood from commercial stands.

Opis:
In April 2005, 2 sets by 3 stacks containing Norway spruce logs were exposed in sunny and shaded place within the forest. In each set logs in 2 stacks were sprayed with Ca(OH)2 aquatic dilution with the addition of milk and vegetable oil (1 stack as a whole, and 1 individually – log by log), and 1 left for control. At the end of June 9 insect species infesting the logs were found, among which the most frequent were Hylurgops palliatus (Gyll.) – 41,1% and Pityogenes chalcographus (L.) – 35,6%. The treated logs were less (sometimes – significantly) infested by the most frequently occurring species, but the difference between two variants of treatment was not very high. The logs exposed in sunny place were less infested than those stocked under stand canopy. As this environmentally friendly treatment reduced the infestation of logs by bark beetles (including I. typographus), it can be recommended especially for mountain areas under protection regime.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to perform a comparative analysis of the quality and the value of beech, oak, fir and spruce wood classified according to the Polish and the EU standards. The research was carried out in Lesko and Baligród forest districts (south−eastern Poland). The measurements of the investigated raw wood were taken at the upper landings. With regard to fir, spruce and beech 50 specimens per species were measured, while in the case of oak only 25 pieces were examined. Each specimen was classified in respect of its quality and size according to the Polish standards (PN) and the European Union (PN−EN) standards. Then, the results of both classifications were compared in terms of the share of volumes of particular wood quality classes, the impact of wood defects on the raw wood classification results, and the value of wood determined by the means of both standards. With regard to the beech wood, the share of the poorest class D upon applying PN−EN was smaller than that for PN norms. This decrease was in favour of other classes, due to which the value of the entire beech wood increased by ca. 16%, when classified with the use of the EU standards. The oak wood revealed a slight increase in the share of wood volume in the class C and a decrease in the class D of PN−EN when compared with the Polish norms. The value of the oak wood classified with the use of the EU standards was merely by 2.3% higher than that of the Polish norms. With regard to the softwood (fir and spruce), a decrease in the share of wood of the class C in PN−EN was recorded, which was in favour of the classes B and D. The value of raw wood classified by means of the EU standards was lower for both of the coniferous species. The decrease for fir accounted for 13.3%, while for spruce it was only 1.5%. For the evaluation of the softwood, Polish classification was more profitable, whereas for hardwood the EU standards were more favourable.

The article presents results of the research on microarthropods (Acari and Collembola) inhabiting fallen spruce trees. The research was conducted in the spruce forest Plagiothecio−Piceetum tatricum typicum in the Babia Góra National Park, Carpathian Mountains. Five downed spruce logs in different stage of decay and neighbouring soil were sampled seasonally. Over 91 thousands specimens of mites and springtails were collected in 140 samples. Changes in population densities of different groups of microarthropod with the age of the dead wood was analysed and compared with densities in forest litter and soil. The total number of microarthopods inhabiting downed spruce logs on the area of hectare in the studied forest was estimated.

As there are different views concerning the relationship between branching type and timber quality, the present paper attempts to evaluate this relationship. The studies were carried out on 32 sample plots located within the boundaries of two natural ranges of Norway spruce in Poland: north−eastern and south−western. The selected trees were examined for the type of branching, height and diameter at breast height, timber quality, size classes or groups in a butt−end section, and kinds or varieties of wood defects having an effect on timber grade classification. The analyses did not show any clear relationship between branching type and timber quality of Norway spruce.

The objective of the research was to analyse the level of fungal infection of spruce wood in the mature and overmature stands and determine the age of their technical maturity. Trees from seven stands aged 49−137 were examined. Age was found to have a statistically significant effect on the level of infection of trees caused by wood−rotting fungi. A high infection level was also detected in the bark−stripped spruces of the lower storeys of multi−storeyed stands. The obtained results enabled determination of the age at which spruces are considered mature (technical maturity) for felling at 80−90 years.

Opis:
Mountain regions are the main natural ranges of spruce forests in Poland. Their occurrence and growth in these areas is associated with the height above sea level and exposure. The attempt of the study was to determine the impact of these two characteristics on the quality of spruce timber. The research was carried out on 20 sample plots located in the Sudety (8 plots) and the Carpathians (12 plots). The trees growing on the selected plots were examined for their diameter at breast height and height, the quality of standing timber and the kinds and varieties of wood defects on tree stems. As a result of the conducted analyses it could generally be stated that forest stands from the lower montane zone produced higher quality timber in terms of both volume and quality and that the best quality stands were on the western and the poorest ones – on the southern slopes.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to investigate and compare structural, mechanical and physical properties of wood of Norway spruce growing on experimental plot in Rogów (central Poland). The planting material consisted of seeds sourced from six selected provenances. Three of them originated from lowlands, while the others have mountain origins (tab. 1). The plot was established in 1975 and the wood was harvested in 2010. Wood samples were prepared and measured according to the Polish Standards describing those procedures. The following properties were subjected to the research and statistical analyses: average tree−ring width, share of latewood, wood density, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, modulus of elasticity in static bending and the coeffi− cients of compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, and modulus of elasticity in static bending. Results of the investigation were correlated in the frame of each provenance. Wood density determines values of compression strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending. The higher wood density, the higher values of the mechanical properties. Ordering provenances by the wood density demonstrates the same results as ordering by values of compression strength parallel to grain. The high values of density and mechanical properties prove good technical quality of the analysed wood. The structural properties (the average tree−ring width and the share of latewood) are correlated to the wood density as well. They are additional features to describe wood quality, but are not as accurate as the mechanical properties. The quality of wood from all investigated provenances is high, what makes impossible to distinguish wood from selected provenances using applied features. Wood from Nowe Ramuki and Kartuzy (i.e. lowland) provenances has the best quality parameters, while one from Istebna Bukowiec and Stronie Śląskie (mountain) provenances demonstrated the worst properties (tab. 2). The results do not prove the opinion about the best quality of Norway spruce wood originating from the mountains.

Opis:
This paper presents the genetic variability in the growth parameters and morphological traits, as well as the silvicultural quality of progeny of 23 European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) provenances from south−eastern Poland. The research was conducted on the experimental plot established in the Łosie Forest District in spring 2006. After 10 years, during the spring and autumn, we determined and measured the spring phenology and survival rate, the diameter at breast height (dbh), the tree height, and the straightness of trunk. The results obtained point out the considerable variability of analysed features, both within and between different beech populations (tab.). Highest and lowest survival rates are noted for the beeches from Lutowiska and Leżajsk (populations 451 and 461), respectively (fig. 2). Lowest mean height and dbh were achieved by beeches from Bircza (453), while the tallest and broadest trees were from the Kielce population (390) (fig. 3−4). The overall silvicultural assessment based on survival, height, dbh, spring phenological phases and straightness of the trunk revealed that the most valuable populations of beech are those originating from Kielce (390), Bircza (454), Strzyżów (459), Lesko (452), Rymanów (457) and Lutowiska (451). In turn, the analysis resulted in least favourable assessments for beeches from Bircza (453) and Gromnik (362). Thus, we confirmed also that trees of local origin are not always best−adapted to (and do not always grow best in) the place they originate from. The obtained results are highly relevant from the principles of creating the seed source regions for beech in Poland, as the proper selection of a population for the given place of growth may yield benefits for forest ecology and management.

The aim of this preliminary study was to assess the activity of laccase, diverse peroxidases as well as the level of micromolecular compounds in Heterobasidion parviporum isolates grown on pieces of Norway spruce wood (sapwood and heartwood) during 50 days of incubation under the laboratory conditions. H. parviporum isolates secreted extracellular enzymes: laccase, manganese peroxidase (MnP), lignin peroxidase (LiP) and versatile peroxidase (VP). Hydroxy− and methoxyphenols were also released during this process. The above−mentioned enzymes showed low activity in mycelium grown on both sapwood and heartwood. The activity of laccase ranged from 0 to 0.513 mU/mg protein on sapwood, and from 0 to 0.106 mU/mg protein – on heartwood. MnP activity of H. parviporum isolates ranged from 0.024 to 0.667 mU/mg protein on sapwood, and from 0.038 to 1.585 mU/mg protein – on heartwood. LiP activity was small and ranged from 0 to 1.281 mU/mg protein on sapwood, and from 0.013 to 0.166 mU/mg protein – on heartwood. Activity of VP oxidizing manganese ions was low. It ranged from 0 to 3.063 mU/mg protein on sapwood, and from 0.059 to 3.054 mU/mg protein – on heartwood. The activity of VP oxidizing guaiacol ranged from 0.006 to 1.490 mU/mg protein on sapwood and from 0.038 to 1.147 mU/mg protein – on heartwood. The hydroxyphenols produced by H. parviporum isolates ranged from 15.037 to 110.149 mg of protocatechuic acid/ml on sapwood, and from 11.236 to 27.220 mg of protocatechuic acid/ml – on heartwood. Methoxyphenols produced by H. parviporum isolates ranged from 3.393 to 24.253 mg of vanillic acid/ml on sapwood, and from 4.955 to 12.005 mg of vanillic acid/ml – on heartwood.
